On April 25, 1961, a patent was issued to Robert Noyce for the first microchip.

Wikipedia:

Robert Norton Noyce (December 12, 1927 – June 3, 1990), nicknamed “the Mayor of Silicon Valley,” was an American physicist who co-founded Fairchild Semiconductor in 1957 and Intel Corporation in 1968. He is also credited (along with Jack Kilby) with the realization of the first integrated circuit or microchip that fueled the personal computer revolution and gave Silicon Valley its name.

In July 1959, he filed for U.S. Patent 2,981,877 “Semiconductor Device and Lead Structure”, a type of integrated circuit. This independent effort was recorded only a few months after the key findings of inventor Jack Kilby. For his co-invention of the integrated circuit and its world-transforming impact, three presidents of the United States honored him.

    I used to enjoy electronics so much, I’d have the two-inch thick old Radio Shack, and other, parts catalogs in my nightstand. You’d be able to make circuit boards using perf boards and connecting pins, you’d be able to wind your own coils and chokes, build your own equipment.

    ICs didn’t change it much, it became more knowing which circuits to string together and how, but it was still fun and doable. Ahhh, the old days, I can still put a desktop computer together but the question is: “why?”. Now it’s easier and cheaper now to just buy one assembled and you don’t run the risk of it being obsolete by the time you pop the parts together.

      Too funny. And with those fun-to-look through Radio Shack catalogs, there was the Heathkit catalog.

      I remember in our 8th grade science class, we got to help our instructor build his Heathkit color tv. Well, one might question our instructor’s thinking about allowing 2 13 year olds to even look at his kit much less work on it. But it was an advanced class, so who knows. It was fun. The tv worked.

      And none of us actually believed his “claim” that he was from the Constellation Orion! LOL

      My husband could spend an hour or more in Radio Shack back in the day, looking at all those doohickeys. After I checked out their telephones and cassette players, it was all boredom for me.

      That being said, I can hang in there with him in plumbing and electrical supply aisles at the Depot, even in the hardware department, and I know what most of it is. But I never got into Radio Shack.

      Love the lamp! It’s a work of art. Another win for us… President Trump is going to get rid of the a department that handles business administration. Yesterday he signed an EO transferring the handling of background checks to the DOD at the Pentagon, which takes the politics out of it. We’ve never had a president that got rid of departments… they’ve only ever added them. Love it!

        Lovely, note that the book on the table is entitled “Dana’s Manual of Mineralogy” which was written by William E. Ford. Published by John Wiley & Son in 1915, the original is for sale on the Internet (see https://www.amazon.com/Danas-Manual-Mineralogy-William-Ford/dp/B000PVDKNS). There doesn’t seem to be a synopsis except to say that it is an elementary introduction to the subject.

        A completely new version is available online for about $25. Obviously the science has advanced immensely since 1915. I think it would be fun to have the original, though.

              Mother’s side of the family was French Cajun.

                Yeah, he was one of our favorites, we’d do lunch at his place. We were friends with his old prep chef who basically started the Culinary Arts (first one) program at Delgado and we got connected to a lot of the chefs in the late 80s and 90s thru Czarina’s and my work. In loved Austin Leslie’s fried chicken, when he moved to Jacques-Imos I clogged more than one artery eating there.
                New post-K chefs are changing eating here a lot but we still have some of our old haunts that survived K and the post-K carpetbagger millennials.

                  Had to down to NOLA for a procedure my dad had done in 10.2017. While there, we went to Crabby Jack’s on Jefferson Hwy in Harahan. Shrimp po-boy heaven. So many shrimp they were falling out of the sandwich. There ain’t nothing like a NO po-boy sandwich! Now, NO style red beans, rice and sausage with real French garlic butter…comes close.

                  Are ‘ya hungry yet? 😉

                    My fav was Deanie’s on Haynes and the shrimp loaf. For those who haven’t eaten there they’d take a standard loaf of white bread (unsliced), cut a hole in the top, scoop out the bread leaving a huge cavity and then fill it with fried shrimp (swimpses in the Haynes vernacular) or fried oysters…or both. That and an ice cold beer.

                    Yes. Lived in Gentilly after we moved from the Garden District. Dad had a snowball stand at the intersection of Elysian Fields and Gentilly Blvd one summer. I used to go out to the strip mall on Gentilly Blvd near the Baptist Seminary.

                    Things began to change even before I left for good. When I was a kid, you could trick or treat at 10-12 years old at night without parents…at least in the Garden District.

                    Do you remember Isadore Newman school on Jefferson Avenue? Jewish school. Very expensive. Still one of the top schools in the nation. Tuition is almost like an Ivy League U. My grandma taught there a long time, even past retirement age. I loved going to their science project fairs. Most of the kids were in wealthy families so they had plenty of funds for projects.

                    The one time I saw JFK up close, just a few feet away, was in 1961-2, coming out of the new Jewish Community Center on St. Charles where I spent summer afternoons mostly in the pool. He was sitting up in the back part of the POTUS open limo. Wow, that red hair! 1963 changed all that.

                    Btw, somebody else very significant died the day JFK was assassinated. C.S.Lewis.

    Don’t worry folks, President Trump has been a leap and a bound ahead of this pack of jackals since before he took office. Remember that President Trump is a builder. He is going to build the biggest, most beautiful, public, case against the enemies of America that we have every seen.

    As to the legalities, how much more confident can we be after the Mueller witch hunt filled with the Clinton Cabal attorneys turned uo zero evidence, President Trump was innocent, not only was he innocent he was savvy and crushed the team of demons from framing him. <<That is the legal Art of War.

    If President Trump’s public offense is going to be brutal the AG’s legal assault is going to be undefinably devastating.

      You know how they are trying to get mileage out of saying he might not have been indicted but he wasn’t exonerated? That is unbelievably stupid even for them. He doesn’t need to be exonerated, they would never accept any evidence that contradicts their delusions, and finally, there are millions of people who aren’t indicted for various crimes large and small who aren’t “exonerated ” either.

      When did that become a point? Will we be seeing Exoneration Committees set up to determine who can proceed past Go in life and move on? Will it be limited exoneration, will we have to be re-exonerated periodically? Will we be issued Exonerated Person Licenses? At what age must we go in for exoneratation? IF we lose our license how long before we can be rehabilitated and go in for re-exoneration? How can we know if we are inadvertently associating with the unexonerated? Can we make them wear a blue and white UE armband?

      The House is doing, as so many predicted, an extension of the coup by investigating anything and everything. They’re going thru the Report, they calling in WH aides to rehash previous testimony, they’re going after his tax records and they’ll sift thru every left wing conspiracy theory they can to create reason to go on. 2020’s right around the corner and they hope to taint race.

      To me the problem is they’re using resources they need to deal with that Rat’s nest of candidates they have and the turmoil they’re having trying to keep the Party from having a schism.

    NWS is reporting a strong storm with hail and a real potential to form a strong tornado. Local news is sending a van with one of those microwave towers on it that has to be raised about 20 feet into the air. That’s one way to create potential job openings.

    Lady weatherguesser has warned people in the area of the storm to get into their ‘safe places’ about 200 times now. Waiting for pix from the van showing older residents heading for shelter while millennials curl up into fetal position and suck their thumbs. How word meanings change.

    Rain’s starting, a more soaking rain than the Biblical plague kinda rain the weatherpanicers were selling last night. Mostly green with some yellow on the Crayola radar presentation, not the reds, purples and death-shroud-whites their predictions showed last night,

    BUT WAIT!!!! There’s another line due this afternoon! Yet another chance for death, destruction and news at 5!

      Around here we are almost always told that the worst weather will be “west of Chattanooga ” which is exactly where we are looking for a house. Spectacular. I don’t know what those west of Chattanooga people have done to anger Mother Nature, but apparently it is a serious and lasting offense.

        I have friends in Dekalb County Alabama, just southish of Chattanooge – we used to buy the booze we’d bootleg in the NE Alabama/NW Georgia area back in the day. Whatever’s PO’d Mother Nature she surely makes up for it there the rest of the time. At one point we were looking at retiring in the area.

      Ruston, LA got tore up last night with not a whole lot of warning (which proves what idiots weatherguessers are.) We are fortunate to live in the “Barksdale Bubble” so if something spelling doom is on the way, I try to be at home.

        Down here news is saying that Ruston tornado was an EF-3 when it hit and had, at various strengths, a 130-mile path.

        We’re in a tornado zone, the one that hit the property after we bought but before we built came across east to west and downed over 11,000 trees on it but since then the only two in the area since were a mile or better away we feel we’re safe for a while.

        In any event we have a solid, not concrete block but solid, house with 155-mph minimum impact windows. We figured out here in the hinterlands it would be days before anyone got to us after a hurricane or tornado so we needed something that could not only withstand the storm but support us until things returned to ‘normal’. Surprisingly it cost less than had we built the same house with wood framing.

      Here in OK tornado ally, not that far from where 3 EF5s hit 3 days in a row in the OKC metro area about 4 years ago. That’s 250mph+ winds. They considered upgrading to EF6 for the tornado that hit Moore City in 1999. 300-318mph. That beat the previous wind speed record up on Mt. Washington in NH. Yup. Anything over 300 needs a 6.

      The weather forecastors around here seem to prophesy weather Armageddon for every little system that comes through, especially for April and May.

      We’re all gonna die every spring.

        I lived in Midwest City many years ago, we’d go outside to look at the storm clouds when we got a tornado warning, they were neat. Then again there were few safe places, the houses were all stick, so what the hell.

        Big talk then was the 1948 tornadoes that pounded Hill.

      I know, we have Daisy who’s at least 14 and starting to show her age. We lost Zauber at 10, The Aroooooo at somewhere over 18, we manage to keep them so long we never think they’ll leave. As I said in another post I have my dog-companions’ ashes and one day we will be together again.

          We have all of our cats’ ashes in urns except for two who were buried under two of the oaks we planted – thought they’d see the squirrels from a whole different angle.

          Old dogs and old people, an edgy combination. I’m spending time looking at the two older dogs aging and wondering what and when but enjoying them in the meantime.

          As the youngest dog is a mix and should last a while I keep on doing the math. We worry about how old they are while they don’t care how old we re, “COME OUT AND PLAY, come on get a ball and COME OUT AND PLAY!”. Even the ancient dog gets all waggy and jumpy, though she can’t wag and jump as she did, but even five minutes outside with her people makes her happy.

          We enjoy them while we have them, just differently at different stages.

            The one thing I worried about when I got Tucker is what would happen to him if I die or am unable to care for him. My daughter has reassured me on that score, for both the dog and the cat. As she pointed out to me, there is no dog that my SIL would not invite into his home. I think he is part dog.

              Yeah, an ongoing issue with us. We’re not planning on getting any more after the ones we have. Daisy’s about 14, BD’s about 12ish but Chez is only about 4.

              Cats are sort of indeterminate ages but they have a lot left. Our best bet is my GDIL and leaving her with the resources to care for them but we try not to think about that.

                  Out of three sons only one has the ability to take on the pets but he’s only interested in one purebreed strain and is not a cat liker. None of them is interested leaving the big city for a (UGH!) farm in the sticks and the GDIL doesn’t have a job that would allow her to maintain this place.

                  We’ll see how things shake out but what were our dreams don’t necessarily translate into others’ dreams.

            My other dog is 14. She is white in the face.

            My dog who passed away went from an average old dog in need of some accommodations to her body shutting down in a 72 hour period. Now that I typed it I realize that is the same patter my dad’s end days took.

            My dog din’t look old other than losing weight because she was mostly white and she was active until the last days.

            I wouldn’t give the memories up for the world, I’m happy that I loved them so fully and was so fully loved by them.

              Your dog’s passing was a normal shutting down from old age. So much better than a disease process, although it doesn’t make you miss her any less!

                I know, and I am forever grateful that I got to hold her as she passed over. She didn’t have a long illness and I didn’t have total her to the vet to have her put down, she was always terrified of the vet, and she was afraid of the car.

                All in all she had a beautiful life but my heart is still 💔with impossibilities.

              We thought Daisy was about 12 but the vet said she was more like 14. That means whoever threw herb out tossed her as an adult.

              She’s been out faithful dog since Day One and a faithful companion to our GGS, guarding and staying with him the entire time he’s been with us and, except for a desire to get out and explore for an hour or two, our friend too.

              Her henna face has turned white back to her ears, she’s gotten a bit cratchity, she’s gained weight and has a touch of arthritis but she’s still Daisy. She still tries to fool us and sneak out with BD for a romp so the little devil is still there.

              I don’t know what we do to deserve them, their trust and their love but whatever it is were blessed to have it.

                My little Grinner was a pistol, always by my side, always protective, she was a rascal in every good sense of the word.

                Watching them decline is hard but knowing she had a beautiful life is comforting. Spoiled to a T.

                It is still so very strange that she isn’t here. I saw that little head in the window just so happy that I was home for 16 years. But she is in a better place with all her youthful exuberance ❤️ running with my childhood dogs 🙂 .

      Pets are one of God’s great gifts of life and joy.

      One of my great friends in the Leesville, LA area once told me that pets were absolutely made to spoil. He was right. I never, ever met a bigger pet family than his. He was a 30yr Army retiree, Chief Master Drill Sgt, tough ole guy, but what a big heart he had for their pets.

      I lived 8 years in that area and went through several pet (funerals) and family grieving with them. My 2 favorites were 2 puppy cut toy poodles that pretty much adopted me. I would help take care of and feed them when they were vacationg. They both passed after I moved, but to hear Bill tell me about that over the phone was very moving.

    The Stoooooooorm of Deeeeeeeeath us over…no wind and a total of .75″ of rain. Not all bad though, the rain was spread out, gentle and all 110 feet of our tomatoes, peppers and egg plants are ever so grateful. We have a week of dry and very warm weather with nitetime temps around 60 so I expect some good growth from the plants.

    Got one more 55-foot row of mixed maters, peppers, egg plants and cabbage to go in, odds and ends, then on to squash and cucumbers. Not a big planting this year but it will be enough to feed us, provide canned stuff and there should be plenty to give away. I’m not getting too old to do it, just too old to do too much of it.
