Library of Congress Reading Room

President John Adams approves legislation to appropriate $5,000 to purchase “such books as may be necessary for the use of Congress,” thus establishing the Library of Congress. The first books, ordered from London, arrived in 1801 and were stored in the U.S. Capitol, the library’s first home. The first library catalog, dated April 1802, listed 964 volumes and nine maps. Twelve years later, the British army invaded the city of Washington and burned the Capitol, including the then 3,000-volume Library of Congress.

Former president Thomas Jefferson, who advocated the expansion of the library during his two terms in office, responded to the loss by selling his personal library, the largest and finest in the country, to Congress to “recommence” the library. The purchase of Jefferson’s 6,487 volumes was approved in the next year, and a professional librarian, George Watterston, was hired to replace the House clerks in the administration of the library. In 1851, a second major fire at the library destroyed about two-thirds of its 55,000 volumes, including two-thirds of the Thomas Jefferson library. Congress responded quickly and generously to the disaster, and within a few years a majority of the lost books were replaced.

According to Wikipedia, the Library of Congress (LOC) is the research library that officially serves the United States Congress and is the de facto national library of the United States. It is the oldest federal cultural institution in the United States. The Library is housed in three buildings on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.; it also maintains the National Audio-Visual Conservation Center in Culpeper, Virginia. The Library’s functions are overseen by the Librarian of Congress, and its buildings are maintained by the Architect of the Capitol. The Library of Congress has claimed to be the largest library in the world. Its “collections are universal, not limited by subject, format, or national boundary, and include research materials from all parts of the world and in more than 450 languages.”

    The Sri Lankan authorities had detailed information on the bombers right down to names, addresses and the time one of the bad guys visited family. Once the event occurred they went right out and arrested surviving agents but by then…

    Now they say they know there are more bad guys and explosives out there and there may well be more incidents. Who trained these guys, t\he FBI?

      It’s no wonder they won opinion blog of the year in 2016. I have had personal communications with Thomas Lifson. Love that man! He’s got some great authors over there. He once told me that Clarice Feldman was a national treasure. I know Treepers think the same way about SD. It was through AT that I began corresponding back and forth with Selwyn Duke, another one of my fav bloggers. I stay in touch regularly with Lloyd Marcus, whose voice is sorely needed.

      CTH should certainly win research blog of the year again. No doubt. It should probably win best comment section for a blog award too, don’t ‘ya think? 🙂

          She is one of the most all-around awesome writers I read. And for a man of Thomas Lifson’s caliber and credentials (many), that was a huge compliment.

          Monica Showalter is writing some fine stuff too. Another lady author who writes for Thomas from time to time that I have appeciated is Fay Voysell. She writes some excellent pieces wherein the spiritual and religious matters are involved.

          In one of my first emails to SD, I told him that Thomas said something to me complimenting SD. That’s a big lift. Thomas is a prolific researcher, so he would recognize another like SD.

      The amazing things are that the reporters don’t seem to see anything wrong with being ignorant of the basics of the primary religion in the USA, and that their editors are just as ignorant. Mistakes like these shouldn’t slip through the cracks. I love the one about the “water from Iraq”, by the way!

        The Declaration of Independence explains why the United States exists and explains our rights come from God. The Left has managed to separate the Declaration of Independence from the US Constitution. The Constitution is a plan of government, a plan limiting government, so there is no mention of God.

          Let’s play word games like the Left does. “All men are created equal and endued with certain inalienable rights'” OK, if we go back and look at the Founders’ writings we see their use of the word ‘Creator’ as another term for God. The Constitution prevented the government from establishing a religion or preventing the free practice of religion so I am not seeing how they could use God in the Constitution without raising some eyebrows so the use of ‘created’ refers to God/Creator indirectly while leaving little doubt as to whom they were referring.

              You one-upped me there and good for you. The after 30 required re-read is excellent. Lots of things can happen between 18 and 30. Those of us who were 18 once and are past 30 know it.

              I’ll throw in Frederic Bastiat’s The Law too.

              You know, with so much great literature, there is no excuse for most people not to know better than they do. But far fewer people read today than when I was a kid.

              When I was a young kid, 9-10 yrs old, I used to go to the Milton Latter Library on St. Charles Street in New Orleans. We lived in the Garden District a few blocks away. Beautiful old antebellum home donated to the city for that purpose many years ago.

              I would get 8-9 books every week. I even got into reading Homer that young. Loved Jane’s Book of aircraft and checked it out so much, hardly anybody else got to check it out for some time. Grandma would say, “Are you really going to read all those books?” I did.

              My grandmother was a teacher at Isadore Newman School (was and to this day is one of the top schools in the US) and brought us up to read, know and learn good music, even scheduled me for water painting lessons at the Delgado Museum on Bayou St. John. So we were raised with good roots of varying interests.

              I have told kids over the years…learn to read and then you can teach yourself anything else.

              I lament peoples’ lack of reading today. They are married to their gadgets.

                Yeah, and the liberries on da Wes’bank where the thugs and homeless used to come to avail theyselves of da A-See. I loved having one of our deputies to work the security detail at the main library by city hall to keep the druggies sleeping it off in hand and making sure that none of the books were being stolen to sell to the 2nd hand shops.

                  If you’re talking about the West bank of NOLA, your assessment is dead on.

                  When I was in my youth, I had a friend who would take the ferry from the East Bank to Algiers on the West Bank. Got off one night and got stabbed. Fortunately, not to death. I had a girlfriend who lived in Algiers and I had to drive through the Fischer projects to take her home. West Bank, yeah, not good.

                  Grandma would also take us down to the library by City Hall for Saturday morning readings. It was pretty cool.

                    I took the old GNO two-lane before the CCC or the Chalmette Ferry almost everyday for over 20 years to get to work. Took the old Paris Road to Little Woods, before the 510, when I worked at the Lakefront and the later when I worked my day job at Michoud.

                    Czarina worked a few clients in the old Fischer. I loved the inside joke when Patricia Clarkson received her Emmy, I believe it was, and in her speech said her mother wanted to be there but she had to blow up the Fischer.

                  I had forgotten, but am now remembering you for having lived there.

                  All those places you mention…brings back a lot of memories. Paris Rd, Michoud…many friends who worked there. Do you remember the name Don Fitzwater? Best family friend. Worked black box projects. They moved him to Seattle where he is now, in his early 90s and won some senior Olympic stuff.

                  I remember having to so some runs across the GNO bridge. Wished there would have been a second bridge way back when. Huey P. Long too. Narrow, trains….did 120mph one night on that bridge trying to get away from a truck load of guys who wanted to rumble. Well, a gun on top of my car roof at the next red light ended their want to rumble so they went on down the road.

                  Talking about the Lakefront. Had some good times there. Used to love to go to the Lakefront Airport just to watch stuff fly in and out. That was father and son time for me. My day wanted to be a pilot in the Navy, but contracted TB, so that ended that. Loved eating at Fitzgerald’s on the lake. But H. Katrina wiped all that out.

                  Lot of water under the bridge. Been away from NOLA a long time. Many other journeys were to be embarked on.

                  I thinking I may have connected two dots: Correct me if I’m wrong.

                    Not hard dots to connect, yeah, =1. I loved the old pre-K city but it’s now largely unrecognizable in places. It’s now a Disneyland for adults, its primary function is to entertain tourists.

                    We climbed tho old Huey P. Narrow and walked it for a project, the railroad bridge belongs to the city of New Orleans while the roadway (they hung a new, mo betterer and wider one) belongs to the state. Took a 5 ton military truck and trailer over the old bridge once, brought it back over the old GNO – easiest passage I ever had.

                    Post-K the city’s politics changed, outsiders now are wielding a good bit of control and; same rotten politics, just new rotters.

                  After you mentioned czarina, I took a closer look at both names and thought, yeah, this has to be. Warms my heart!

                  I have parents and family still there. Out in the Metairie/Kenner area.

                  I was long gone by the time they enlarged the HPL bridge. And what rascal HPL was. Then there was EE elected twice, out, then re-elected…oh the minds of the politically numbed. Dave Treen pretty much dropped out of politics after than. I couldn’t believe the results of that election, yet, I could. Carlos Marcello himself told his people that they were never going to be able to corrupt Dave Treen. But Marcello’s steak house, Nancy’s, was really good. Then you had Sheriff Alwynn Cronvich…….it’s a long list. They don’t call Louisiana a banana republic for nothing.

      The Muslims are out from Ishmael and Esau. (The sons God rejected.) Jacob I have loved. Esau I have hated ROMANS 9:13

      And if one wants any proof as to how accurate the Old Testament prophecies are, just take a second look at the Lord’s words to Hagar about Ishmael and tell me if the history of the Muslims, ISIS and the Caliphate…up to our present day…is fulfillment of that one verse in:

      GENESIS 16:12

    Here’s a clip for you, armed escorts helping an illegal group move into the US. It’s a thermal imaging camera so the details aren’t quite as sharp but you can see the helpers are armed and masked. The different weapons they’re carrying lead me to believe they’re cartel vice LEA or military but you can see they’re better armed than our BP personnel or the much of the military we’ve put out on the border.

        I will enjoy it here. Some days are so pressed I struggle to squeeze extra things in. I got a break the last few days so was able to spend considerable more time in the Treehouse.

        I knew about Stella and this site, so with a little extra time tonight, thought to check in. Glad I did. Good warm camaraderie here like in the Treehouse.
