I remember seeing some houses painted like that when were in Poland, helps tone down the depressing drabness of the People’s Republics.

Just in passing, Zalipie is about 20 miles from the village my grandfather’s from (Slupiec).

BTW, that happy little village is about 110 miles east of the Auschwith-Birkenau complex. I can’t help but wonder how many of the local Polish Jews that lived in that village ended up there.

Wow Lucille, they were so beautiful. Did you see all the religious artwork in the homes? Clearly many of the buildings were very old, but all tended so lovingly. Thanks!

You can find houses painted like this through the area including Austria, the old Czech republic, Romania. It’s a cultural thing that transcends borders.

Though the communists gave it all they had, they could never defeat the Polish majority’s desire to maintain their Christian faith.
I ran across this wonderful story today…

There will never be another like him. Truly a great pope, a great world leader, and wasn’t it magnificent when the world had Reagan, Thatcher, and Pope John Paul II?

We’re all over my family home today. BTW, John Paul was born in Wadowice, about 20 miles from what would become the Auschwitz-Birkenau complex. Out of the 6 million Jews murdered during the Holocaust 3 million were Poles, they comprised 90% of Polish Jewry and half of all Poles killed during the war.
I’ve said it before but as I really like it I’ll post it again. In 1987 I was on active duty with a unit on the New Orleans Lakefront. There was a huge vacant area behind the Center and we were notified that the city had chosen that field to house the crowd that would be at the mass John-Paul would hold during his visit. They were building a huge 2-story steel building for the alter and putting up large swaths of fencing…some of that fencing would be at the far rear of the field and abut the large double gate at the rear of the Center. The city needed the gate to be watched, even though it was to be locked, and the Center needed to provide two people to guard the gate…I was one of the volunteers.
We didn’t think much about it, the gate was to be used as an alternate access for emergency units, the Pope was to come through the main gate a half mile away. We just needed to watch the gate in case it was needed and to make sure no one used it to sneak in.
Come the morning of the mass and there were an estimated 130,000 people in that field. We were way back in the deserted northeast corner, we could barely see the alter. It was a bright, beautiful cloudless day and everyone was enjoying the weather and light breeze when, out of nowhere, a huge black thunderstorm rolled in from the northwest. That sky was BLACK, and we watched the wall of rain slide in, threatening to ruin the mass. 130,000 people and very little chatter, all eyes were fixed on the rain and lightening.
We were listening on our radios as NOPD was talking about the crowd being too thick, people blocking the roads coming to and trying to leave and how they couldn’t get their cars through… then we got a call to open our gate so a couple of NOPD and the rain hit. It wasn’t a cold rain but it poured, we couldn’t see our Center which was just about 200 feet away. As rain hadn’t been predicted we didn’t bring rain gear so we just sat there and got drenched to the skin, water poured off of the bills’ of out caps like small waterfalls.
It was about 5 minutes before we saw the flashing red and blue lights of the NOPD cars coming up the drive towards the gate, they drove slowly thru the rain and two passed thru, the second slowing and a dry officer yelling to us not close the gate as more cars were coming. So we stood there, rain still pouring though a bit slower now, and the next vehicle started to appear. It wasn’t a police car, no lights, and it was strangely shaped. It was almost to the gate before we recognized it, it was the Popemobile. The Popemobile pulled up to the gate and stopped, the previous cars,m it turned out, were trying to clear an alternate route thru the crowd and had the Popemobile stop. There he was, John-Paul himself, standing in the plexiglass bubble, about a foot away. We were right up against the vehicle, on the right side of the Pope who was looking down on us as the rain sheeted off of us, we were a mess. He just stared at us for a minute, we must have looked like hell, and smiled. I just looked at him, shrugged and yelled: “Jestem Polakiem” (I’m Polish). He pointed at us, gave us a big smile and blessed us. We just looked at each other for a minute or two more until his driver got the go-ahead to move. The Pope waved goodbye and drove through the crowd followed by two more NOPD cars. We closed and locked the gate and watched the Pope’s vehicle as it approached headed towards the alter.
The freaky part was that as his vehicle got closer to the alter the rain slowed until, as he mounted the covered alter, the rain stopped, the skies cleared disappeared and 130,000
people were amazed. The news still mentions the visit and alludes to the mass but there’s little mention of the rain now though everyone there and watching it on the TV remembers.
Just another of those little coincidences that pepper my life.

Just lucky. We both have the curiosity to jump at things most people would just pass by and frequently we’re rewarded.
I still have the hat, shirt and ID tag we had to wear to work the Pope’s visit. I expect it, along with a lot of other souvenirs, will be on eBay after I’m at room temperature.

Interesting. Instead of typing in passwords and stuff, I went through my E-Mail for the link to my unused WP site and I was logged in still. I come back here, and I’m not.
The I tried the button “Login via WP” at the comment box and “poof” here I am.

Same. Very peculiar. BUT – I had to try to post a comment before the option showed up. Hadn’t had to do that in years.

Yep, we have a day or two of that, temps in the seventies this week, but according to the weather hag on my phone (boy is she surly) we get five straight days of rain next week. Death Valley is looking good as a place to retire.

Here we’ve had 3 days in the hi 70s with nights at 37 to 40. We’re expecting about 5 to six back-to-back rainy days but accumulation is only supposed to be about 3″ max. Liars.

My grandchildren somewhat grudgingly had to accept that they get plain pancakes at my house rather than Mickey Mouse waffles. Much as I love waffles, I refuse to buy a MM waffle iron. Or even a plain one. Not worth having to store it, when I can cop a breakfast out at IHOP or Waffle House if I’m craving a waffle.

I split the difference and bought a plain waffle iron as the GGS likes
waffles, I spoil him and it’s the easiest way to get protein (eggs) and calcium (whole milk) into him. I also make corn bread waffles that we put various things on like chili. eggs, chicken…

Are you the one who has an egg cooker for the microwave? The kind you crack the egg into? Does it work well?
LikeLiked by 1 person
Czarina found this, for some reason it didn’t show up in my ‘replies’.
Yes, I have the microwave cooker but I don’t use it much. The eggs come out like poached eggs, it works but they remind me more of the poached eggs cooked by breaking an egg directly into boiling water.

Glad Czarina saw this. I was looking for an easier way to make deviled eggs, so guess it wouldn’t work.

Not unless you’re looking for gelatinous deviled eggs. Only part about hard boiled eggs I hate is peeling them.

Bingo. That’s what I was trying to get away from. I figured it was too good to be true. Glad I asked before I ordered.

Supposedly the best way to avoid the peeling problem is to start them in boiling water, rather than in cold.

I’ve tried a dozen ways and some work sometimes. I used to get best results with eggs fresh from the chicken’s derriere but since the coons raided he coop and killed her chickens it’s back to icky store eggs that can be weeks old.

No big deal, especially if you raise your own chickens. We used to candle all of our eggs, so that we didn’t get an even bigger surprise than this.

STELLA BY STARLIGHT
by Victor Young
Frank Sinatra (remastered 1947 original version)
The song a robin sings,
Through years of endless springs,
The murmur of a brook at eventide.
That ripples by a nook where two lovers hide.
A great symphonic theme,
That’s Stella by starlight,
And not a dream.
My heart and I agree,
She’s everything on earth to me.

lilbirdee12’s prayer:
Our Heavenly Father, Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.
Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.
Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump and Mike Pence and their families as they seek to lead America back to You.
Grant us patience, Lord, as the evil ones try to anger us and cause us to fall.
Spread blessings over Israel and Netanyahu.
We humbly ask that You please comfort those who are grieving and in pain.
Thank you Father, for Your Love and the gift of Life.
In Jesus name, we pray. Amen.
