The Songkran Festival, which is tied to the Thai New Year, occurs each year in mid-April for three days. It’s a time to clean, reflect, and pay respect to your neighbors, family, and the elderly.
During the festival, people bring food to local monks and bathe Buddha statues in water, while younger Thais pour scented water over the hands of their elders for luck and prosperity. Over the years, this tradition has evolved to include a massive water fight with water balloons and super soakers.

    Today’s old movie…”Successful Failure” (1934) … these type of films were low budget and usually shown on a double bill (remember those?)…along with a major studio big budget movie. I enjoyed it.

      Just planted what may be the last of the bulb flowers for this year. We’re planting patches of various daffodils, iris and lilies in the in the wooded area to our west, hoping that over time they’ll spread out. We’re putting Louisiana Irises in the drainage slough as they grow tall, have an interesting variety of colors, slow down the water flow and love soggy ground. Now let’s see if the beavers and nutria leave them alone.

        Daffodils are poison, so the animals will probably leave them alone. The squirrels here chomp on tulip bulbs as if they were salads. I think iris will be safe, but who knows?

          When my older sister was in junior high (7-8th grades) she made fountain pen ink out of purple irises. She was so creative.

          One year for my birthday (probably my 10th) she made a Kachina doll lapel pin carved out of wood and painted.

          For a school project when her class was studying ancient Egypt, she made a 5-6 inch pottery mummy and a sarcophagus with Egyptian design. With only the library in which to do research, she learned how to glaze and fire them without using a kiln.

          At Christmastime two years ago as gifts to each of her four children I purchased frames for drawings and paintings she’d made from grammar school through college which I found in my mother’s possessions.

          Some time back one of my nieces was reminiscing and said when they were children, their mother would tell them bedtime stories. It wasn’t until years later did they come to know the stories were all originals which she’d written but never published. Only as adults after she died did they come to appreciate how unusual their mother had been.

          To all the Stellars…I pray that your children and grandchildren know how unusual you are in time for them to tell you in person.

      Thanks Lucille. My dad lives in Skagit Valley, it is beautiful there. Especially when the daffs and tulips are in bloom. There is a lovely 50-mile bike ride there every spring called the Tulip Pedal which passes all the major tulip fields. Lots of fun, I’ve done it several times.
