I was reading a Pastor this morning and it made me wonder if our society is getting to the point of no return? Are our Churches becoming what we were warned they would become? This was a Baptist Pastor, but it isn’t limited to just the Baptist, it seems to have spread to all denominations.
He wrote that Christians have to accept that although abortion is murder it is legal murder and there is nothing we can do about it but pray because God commands us to follow man’s law. We can only pray for our children, because we cannot change what they learn in school and learn through their peers, television, music and social media. We must welcome illegal immigrants because they are also God’s children. We must accept that Islam is a religion, love and welcome our Muslim brothers and sisters and embrace them and try to understand their faith. It is just as important to them as our faith is to us.
There was a lot more this Pastor wrote that had me torn between fury and tears, but these bothered me the most.
Does he read a different Bible than I do?
I’m sorry I do not believe God expects us to hide in a closet and say there is nothing we can do God. Yes, we should always pray, but we’re not vegetables.

There are really good ministers that preach the truth, but many want sermons that tickle their ears, instead of the truth. This preacher will have to answer for leading people astray. I think the prayers need to be that his flock asks him to leave and get a sound preacher.

If it was just one Pastor or one Church it wouldn’t bother me so bad, but I keep seeing more and more of it.
I’m starting to think there is something in the water in my state as everyone is going insane. Christians sounding like non-believers, conservatives sounding like liberals and even some liberals who are sounding more sane than the conservatives.
It started with abortion, it’s like that did something to their minds. A friend said they think it’s cognitive disodence brought on by the abolition movement that was challenging to pro-life and Christians.
Not sure how that is spreading to illegals, immoral teenagers, Muslims, etc.

Itās a legitimate cause for concern for sure. Iāve seen plenty of congregations move from being solidly conservative to more liberal views in Texas, too. I havenāt seen it on abortion issues, but other things. For one thing, people seem to view church as entertainment and that was never what it was intended for. I think it starts there and then as āfunā is added and younger people move into roles that older people had held, then the liberal ideas start coming in. Itās a slippery slope.

That it is and the parents are not teaching their children to respect God’s House. I’m not saying girls must wear dresses and boys wear nice clothes, although that was how I was raised. However, teen girls coming to Church in shorts and skirts up to their rear ends and boys wearing t-shirts with bordering on vulgar words and pictures is very disrespectful. Not to mention all the kids on their phones throughout service.
Then you compound that with preachers who want to avoid subjects that make people uncomfortable and maybe even themselves. Churches are failing.

I do not understand parents who let kids do that. My kids got sent back upstairs to change clothes or tuck and neaten and comb hair on a very regular basis.
However, I also agree with sand. I don’t know about other parts of the country, but around here younger pastors and I assume congregations have torn out beautiful old church altars and furnishings and put in stages and sound systems and big screen tvs. One young man who lamented the destruction of his childhood church posted side by side pictures on Facebook. It was a travesty.
I won’t say it is the Catholic in me that detests such changes, I will say it is the thinking Christian in me, in light of the Bible and all we know about God. A building lacking an altar, a pulpit, a choir loft or area, something, is not a church. Worship, fine and holy worship might go on, I don’t know, but a church has a focus other thanthe congregation and their entertainment.
I did not grow up Catholic and in my childhood I was sent to many, many churches, all protestant of course, many Baptist, some Methodist, one Cumberland Presbyterian. Every single one of them had the front of the sanctuary clearly designed and set aside to worship and honor God.
Not all had altars but everyone had a pulpit, a very large Bible, often candlesticks and linens lovingly maintained. Lots had very beautiful stained glass windows.
I want to be taken outside myself, lifted up, joining with the Church, the Body of Christ, his believers across the world, in worship and sacrifice to the Father. Churches are very specifically designed to begin that process before the service ever starts.
I guess this matters to me because I see it as part of the movement to change God and the Bible into something more in line with what society wants them to be, what modern people can “live with” if you will. God is to conform to me, certainly not me to him, their movement seems to be.

Unfortunately, I think the attitude many have is, what can the church do for me, instead of what can I do for the church? However…. if all of us here are seeing the problems, then I bet many others are, too. Thatās a good thing. Maybe the pendulum will begin to swing back to more conservative churches.

Nothing I hate more than walking into a Church and seeing a huge stage with a full band.
It seems as if way fewer worship God and it’s more about having a good time.

Itās very sad to see those things. Iāve been doing church at home for some time. We stream the service and take communion just like if we were there. I know itās important to fellowship with the church, but this is working for us right now.

I get more out of the worship by watching it from home, since there are no distractions. I do need to make a better effort to attend, though. The church I really like is about a 45 minute drive, so itās been easier to just pull the sermon up and watch it.

The way things are going the churches are happy to have bodies in pews period. No sense in antagonizing young attendees while they’re developing habits/behaviors, few enough as is are going.

In any cases it’s become a business…a BIG business. I see the pastors and their pastoresses, dressed to the nineses, divin’ them big fanzy carses and alivin’ in dem bigggggg houses while they flock be jes scaprein’ by. Gotta be a SPECIAL places in hell for them.

michelle, there is a remedy that might work. It did for me.
We had an off-week in Bible study, so one “progressive” older lady asked could we study the koran that day. Me being me, I said if we do that, then we are also going to study the other three books that go with it.
Mind you, you must be familiar with the koran and specific passages to pull this off successfully, or whatever other subject you wish to challenge.
This church, being the church in which i was reared, knew me. Knew Dad and me well.
Dad and I had more than our share of arguments in our church, and rarely, if ever, lost.
Pastor cancelled the next class, and we had a week off.
We never did study the koran. Not while i was there, anyway.
You and that Baptist pastor and his church will be in our prayers.

I don’t see a real problem in studying the koran in Bible class, issue I have is HOW it’s studied. You can study a cobra in biology class, you just don’t hug it and put it in your pocket to take home to the kids.

Agree with you, Michell, Menagerie and Sand, re the difference between worship and entertainment. What’s happening today in so many churches is disheartening.
I’ve only been to Catholic funeral Masses but used to watch Mass most days when EWTN was in my cable package. it’s obvious that an attitude of reverence prevails. Parishioners don’t sit discussing where they’re going for lunch or what’s on the news BEFORE the service starts like they do in Protestant or, especially, Evangelical services. This pre-service time should be a moment when people are preparing themselves to worship the God they believe in with their fellow Christians or also perhaps with those who are searching for truth.
God absolutely does not expect us to sit idly by and let the world go to hell. We are to be His standardbearers. We are to speak the truth in love, but not in a manner as to distort His Word. Once the Word, both written and in Christ Jesus, is not central, you get wishy-washy teachings and PC rhetoric. Then the people start to make up their own gospels and their own imperatives. The result is a “tolerance” for false doctrine about life and its value. Not being firm in dogma also encourages a “broad-mindedness” (actually a wish to not rock the boat) about Koranic/Sunna teachings and a discounting of how those teachings affect adherents who choose active terrorism. This sweetness and light about a very dangerous political religion is ignorance-on-display to the max.
What God does not do is encourage people to break the law. If the law is certifiably unjust, then that’s another matter and there are ways to remain a moral God follower when dealing with this. But being morally right is not what motivates the illegal alien. He comes to our nation willing to break our laws by not following the rules on how to immigrate. That’s strike #1. Next, he wants benefits or jobs which he does not deserve over those who have followed the laws/rules/regs or are citizens already. That’s strike #2. Finally, he comes to our shores to participate in felony criminal activity. Strike #3.
The United States has helped people-in-place in their own nations for a very long time. Anyone who says we are not willing to give a hand to those in foreign lands, chooses to lie and not state the facts. There is essentially no good reason to be an illegal immigrant.
Yesterday I spent about six hours listening to cds of the Old Testament being read (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus and Numbers–I’m starting at the beginning and plan to go through it all in sequence), and was struck once again at how elaborate every aspect of Israelite worship and life was. It’s been many years since I read those portions of the Bible, as I usually concentrate on the New Testament and the Psalms or Proverbs. I had to laugh in a few places at what mess-ups the people were…until God reminded me that times may change, but people really do not. The Israelites–the people God chose to deliver His message to their eras–drifted away from God numerous times because of apostate actions or teachings, and unholy desires which came to the fore in the peoples minds…and THAT should be a lesson to today’s pastors and preachers. Nothing good comes from NOT being firm in following Our Lord.

Aside from the familiar stories we glean from the writings of Moses–Adam and Eve, Abraham and Sarah, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, etc.–the dietary, interpersonal relations, religious and governing laws are intricate and, frankly, rather difficult to follow when someone is just reading it out loud. Those portions really need study. I have, however, committed myself to going straight through the entire Old Testament first and then do a detailed study afterwards.
Prior to my dear mother being afflicted with macular degeneration in one eye (she was already blind in the other eye due to a severe astigmatism) read the entire Bible through yearly for 20 years. A lovely Christian woman.

I don’t know if I could do it yearly. I have though read through about a half dozen times. I’m not one that does good listening and processing what I’m hearing. I’ve always been that way and have always processed better by reading. The older I get though and needing reading glasses, I wish I was able to listen.

I’m going to be watching for something from Mr. Browne, too. I think the post is a bit confusing: it was the emergency spillway that was repaired last year, and I get the impression the the post is discussing the main dam??
Also, the author made a math error in the post which drew a lot of distracting comments, and he plainly acknowledged his mistake. Perhaps some clarity will come later in the day –

Just started some Jalapeno and California Wonder pepper seeds (germinated already in wet coffee filters). I just got some seeds for really cute dwarf peppers called Tangerine Dream. They are orange, but not hot.
I repotted 21 tomato plants on Saturday (I know, I’m nuts), but I plan to give away most of the 12 Tiny Tim cherry tomato plants. Five varieties of tomatoes – Tiny Tim, Cuban Yellow grape tomatoes, Orange 1 Belarus, Amish Paste, and Kibits Ukranian (I think these are actually originally from Poland, but who knows for sure.)
I’ve started several herbs, and have another group to plant. I also have lettuce which I have to start this week, gherkins and radishes. Most of these can be planted in containers, but I have some bed space too, in among the flowers!

This all sounds like fun work, and good things to look forward to. Tomatoes were the one thing I could have all I wanted for free and I never liked them until I was grown.

This is the first time I’ve started plants from seed in a very long time. It’s more work but a lot cheaper. I’m learning a lot on YouTube. I have avoided seedling death by sterilizing my potting soil in the microwave! That kills bacteria, insects and fungus which may be present – even in bagged potting medium. Also not over-watering or overfeeding, and providing enough heat and light. I’ve also been using distilled water on the seedlings, since I have chlorinated tap water.
Just think – you may have a garden some time in the near future!

A sunny location is your best friend. Start with containers, and plant things that are difficult to kill. Herbs are great. Learn about composting and soil amendment. Begin with plant starts instead of seeds, because it’s easier. Watch lots of YouTube!

If you move this summer, you can plant a Fall and Winter garden – great for cold weather crops like kale, lettuce, peas and spinach.

Will you start marigolds for your veg garden? I found both giant and regular marigolds alternated work best, but our growing season is diff than yours. How about mustard? Never grew it, but used it and tobacco for veg pests, but again, our pests are diff than yours.
Btw Stella, you really should find a hobby. This plant business must be wearing you out. lolol

I probably won’t plant marigolds, but my mother always did – those and zinnias. I imagine our growing seasons are pretty similar. I’m in southeast Michigan, which has a slightly warmer climate than just north or west of us because of the protection from the lakes. My planting zone is 6a/6b.

Intersperse basil with tomatoes, as they support each other. Marigolds go with green beans.

I’ve always liked SPAM, my husband and kids have always thought I was nuts eating something posing as meat. I can remember once my mom calling me and asking what I was doing and I told her frying some spam for lunch and she asked me how I could eat something I had no idea what was in it.
I don’t care if people think I’m nuts, every now and then I want a fried SPAM sandwich. lol

My daughter and her husband recently went to a party where all of the dishes contained Spam. She didn’t like it much, and said the best dish was Spam sushi.

My SIL likes SPAM, so now I finally have someone who doesn’t think I’m crazy. lol

My mother cut it up into pinto beans instead of ham; I still think it tastes best. And Spam sandwiches with lettuce, tomato, mayo & pickles are great!

I have actually started buying Clover Valley (Dollar General Brand) of SPAM. It’s almost half the price of SPAM and tastes just as good, my SIL thinks it tastes better than SPAM.

I’m watching the Utrecht tram shooting as it spills out. Utrecht mayor’s office is grudgingly mumbling about it ‘possibly’ being terrorism, spokespersons finally giving the shooter’s name (sounds very Turkish) and admitting it occurred in an area heavily populated by Turk and Moroccan immigrants.
I’m particularly interested in reports out of Utrecht where someone’s trying to make this look more like ‘domestic violence…seems they say he has had problems with his wife. Sorta like that Ft Hood ‘workplace violence’ thing.

Is it just me or are they trying to legislate away our religious freedom? For example, Catholic bishops who legitimately enforce Catholic teaching, an increasingly rare occurrence, are bitterly criticized for enforcing the policy of not employing a person who participates in a gay marriage ceremony, or there are the Catholic adoption agencies closed down in certain states, hospitals that will not perform sterilizations and abortions, or even abortion referrals.
This isn’t just a slippery slope, it is a clear negating of religious freedom.
