    Crown shyness is a naturally occurring phenomenon in some tree species where the uppermost branches in a forest canopy avoid touching one another. The visual effect is striking as it creates clearly defined borders akin to cracks or rivers in the sky when viewed from below.
    Although the phenomenon was first observed in the 1920s, scientists have yet to reach a consensus on what causes it.

    An interesting thing happened to me this morning. I received an email from Quora, inviting me to become a member of the Quora Partner Program. So I joined. I was already a Quora member, but being a Partner means that you ask questions and GET PAID for doing so, based on the number of views and replies. My goal is to ask ten questions a day. I have no idea how much money can be earned, but it’s an intriguing prospect for somebody who loves to talk and interact, and the questions can be about anything.

    Monday Movie Time…well acted, good script, and Taylor was at her most beautiful. When you look at her face you realize she doesn’t have a “bad side”…the symmetry is incredible. BTW, did you know that she had double row eyelashes? I can’t remember what the condition is, but unfortunately it (and I think the lavender color eyes, though I may be remembering the years-old article incorrectly) is connected to the health problems she had in her life.

        Comes from appreciating the movies from the 30s, 40s, 50s when they were not only entertaining, but the major studios like MGM hired the best…from writers to directors to cameramen to actors to producers to the craft people (such as costumes, lighting and makeup). They were excellent and took great pride in their work.

        Many creative folk, of course, in the 60s to present also fell/fall into this category. But when the major studios basically petered out, a lot of the great craftsmanship did also. Also, television created new opportunities but various programs and series had to be done quickly and corners were cut. People got rather used to mediocrity.

        Most people look at the costumes, especially us females. However, if you don’t already do so, sometime when you’re watching a film, check out the sets and furniture, what the camera angles are, how the extras (non-speaking roles) interact with each other or react to the dialogue by the actors. Extras have to be subtle so as to not steal scenes or draw undue attention to themselves. Most know their place in the scheme of things, though.

        I worked with so many good people, some of whom remained lifelong friends. All in all, it was a great time working on the studio lots and later in the various corporate offices. Wouldn’t have missed it for the world.

    Howdy race fans! The early part of Iditarod is shaping up nicely. The current leader, Nic Petit, is resting at mile 163, with the second team–Pete Kaiser!–about 7 miles behind him and also resting. Aliy Zirkle is in the pack that is chasing them, one of 8 teams currently resting at Rainy Pass (mile 153, only 845 miles to go!).

    The trail has been a steady uphill climb to get over the Alaska Range; Anchorage is at sea level and Rainy Pass is at 1900 ft. of elevation, the highest point on Iditarod. From there, it is 35 miles of terror-inducing downhills through the Happy River Steps and the Dalzell Gorge to Rohn. There are many hairpin switchbacks and some mushers have compared this section of the trail to falling from a plane without a chute. Broken bones and busted sleds are not uncommon.

    My young friend Jessica Klejka is currently resting at Finger Lakes before beginning the steep uphill to Rainy Pass. She is fairly far back in the pack, but she is the lead rookie so far! It is a big deal to get Rookie of the Year and I really hope she takes it.

      I wonder if any of the mushers wear GoPros and if they’ll share the downhill from a mushers perspective. That would be awesome.

        Yes lovely, some mushers do put GoPro cameras on their sleds and records parts of the trip; Aliy has done it in the past, don’t know if she is doing it this year.             Yes, great photo of Aliy. She’s quite photogenic, I’ve never seen a bad picture of her. I’d never heard of Blair Braverman (which is apparently pronounced “Bleer”) before this race. She has a fairly large Twitter presence and has been blogging for several months about her Iditarod training. This is her rookie year–always a large learning curve. And she’s from your neck of the woods. Well, she’s from Wisconsin anyway; a town called Mountain, WI. Know where that is?

            I also learned today that there is a new series on Netflix called Losers which has a nice segment on Aliy. It premiered Saturday.

            If you want to read one of the greatest and funniest books ever written on dog mushing, get a copy of “Winterdance: The Fine Madness of Running the Iditarod” by Gary Paulsen. Thigh-slapping, hold-your-sides and laugh-till-you-cry funny. Has a little bit of bad language (mushers are a salty bunch) but not much. Of course you can get it from Amazon, but your local library might have it too.

              Just looked on the Map. Mountain, WI. is 3 hours direct north of me. Definitely a lot of snow for a musher who is learning the ropes.

              I’ll get a copy of Winterdance. I love getting on the ground perspective of things , it is the most honest, people who study things to write about it are sharing their knowledge, people who write about their world are sharing their passion and their knowledge seeps through in everything they write.

              Stan Wawrinka always played tennis well but he could never break the big 4 tennis greats.

              Until at age 28 he beat Rafa Nadal who was favored to win by maybe 100 to 1.

      Starting around 2:15 PM PST today, my TV, Internet service and land line phone service went down, though WIFI didn’t. It stayed that way until around 7:00 PM. I’m wondering if it wasn’t an attack of some sort on Spectrum (Time-Warner Cable).

      The above notice is no longer seen when I click on various Conservative sites, but something definitely bizarre happened during that time period. I saw the Spectrum maintenance guys on our property and they said the outage was neighborhood-wide.

      I’m coming to the conclusion that it’s not a good idea to have a bundled service for TV, phone and Internet but it really is cheaper than having separate services for each. One of my neighbors has “rabbit ears” antenna hooked up and it works fine. I may do that and then cancel that portion of my bundle.

        I no longer have cable television, but I do have cable telephone and internet. Adding an antenna (which I have) is a good idea. If you don’t have a digital television (though I assume that you do), you will also have to add a digital converter, but they are cheap. I have one on my old tv that I keep in the bedroom – a Sony that weighs so much I will have to have assistance to get it out of the house.
