We have opossums in the wooded area behind our house, along with bobcats, and coyotes. Recently, a neighbor posted on a local app that she had one up in her tree and it was making the birds shriek. She wanted to know what to do about it and should she call pest control? Thank goodness people responded to just ignore it and eventually it would just take off. 🙄 Oh… another opossum story… my aunt lives in an old historical home and woke to her dogs barking in her room, like crazy. Somehow a baby opossum had gotten in her room and had wrapped itself around the top of one of the four posters on her bed, while she was asleep!

My friend had a cat door and late at night went into her bedroom in the dark and thought the figure she saw was her cat. Luckily, it turned and ran back out. This ad always made me think of her.
😯 DO NOT TRY TO PET raccoons. While I was looking for this video, I saw many of people who had been bitten by a raccoon.

Yeah…. that would be very alarming and they can be aggressive, even though they are kind of cute. On our ring camera, we pick up raccoons walking around our yard at night. For a while there was a momma and three babies that would go through regularly, until the babies got big enough to go on their own.

We had prisoners working at our Pound in Florida that we had to watch. They’d unload the animals from the trucks as they came in and, as Florida was building up back then, the Pound got a lot of raccoon calls.
We had a Jamaican prisoner who thought he was an animal expert and one day when they had a huge boar coon brought in in a box trap he was all hot about showing the workers how a ‘pro’, a true animal whisperer, was going to get this coon out of a trap.
When that trap came outta the truck it looked like it was just stuffed with this coon, it was a large trap and this coon must have weighed over 30 pounds, he ate very well. The Jamaican was talking cool and low to the coon and the coon was just hunched down with eyes coolly locked on the Jamaican. The Jamaican slooowly opened the trap door as he sloooowly moved to loop end of the catch stick towards the coon…who had eyes still locked onto the Jamaican.
It was an instantaneous change, those who blinked missed it, but one second that coon was in the trap and the next it was on the Jamaican biting and scratching him from head to toe, not missing a beat. It launched outta that trap like a tomahawk missile outta a Trident sub and did about as much damage. It spent about 30 seconds taking its pique out on that guy, wasn’t anything we could do as it would have gotten us. Couldn’t shoot as we weren’t allowed to be armed on the grounds so best we could do it yell and try to discourage it.
When it was finally done it stood its ground, looking at us with that coon ‘You wanna piecea me?’ look, them just sauntered over to the fence, climbed over and disappeared into the scrub. We got the Jamaican some towels to sop up the blood, took him to the ER where they tended the wounds (didn’t need any stitches) and the County started him on rabies shots. He never came back to the Pound, he went some other place to work off his time, but I’m betting he never messed with another Florida coon.

I imagine they do. I think I’m just more aware of them, because I live by a creek with lots of trees. We also have armadillos come through. Both are good for eating unwanted bugs and grubs. I’ve opened my front door and had an armadillo on my porch before.
I need to ask my aunt how she got that little opossum out of her room. 😉

Our dogs get one every now and then, we’re alive with them. The one they almost got a few weeks back still comes by looking for food (except frozen key lime pie) and is patiently awaiting my persimmon trees to fruit again and our yard is rather free of snakes. Good trade-off.

How did she get the baby out of there?
A number of years ago I read an article which claimed that opossums have a low body temperature and thus don’t carry diseases. Then a few days ago I read that they do carry diseases and named a bunch of things I’d never heard of. So much info out there who knows what to believe!
Guess next will be a check at the Center For Disease Control site to see how many people and pets got sick recently from opossum bites or picking up feces. Or maybe I’ll just forget about it…LOL!

I’m loving that President Trump came right out, yesterday, and said that Ilhan Omar should resign from Congress for her anti Semitic statements. She shouldn’t even be allowed to be in Congress. The hummers used to arrive in West Texas Mar. 15 (+,- a day or two) and stay until Oct. 15. The males usually arrive first, about 2 weeks ahead of the females. One year a hum built her nest at the top of our porch swing – really!!! It was pure magic to watch her and her navy bean-size eggs hatch, and to watch the babies and their first flight. From hatching to first flight is about 3 weeks…..and then, they’re gone!

For about 2 – 3 years one little bird would come and hover in front of the big window in the den looking for me to let me know that the 2 porch feeders were empty…. I like to think that it was the mama, as I was really careful to keep her feeders fresh while she was nesting/feeding the babies. 😉

LOL My father started it. He put out one feeder and had about 6 birds that quickly turned into 10 and were fighting over it. So, he put up another one on the back side of the house and got even more birds. So we put up two on our side and one day counted them. There were at least 40. My father finally got tired of making more for them and quit, so I did it. We loved watching them.

We had four feeders and at least 40 hummingbirds. The most fierce of them all was a mother with her small baby. She even chased off the one we called “Knothead” because of his lump on the top of his head, and he was absolutely vicious. Nobody came around the feeder, not even him, when she was letting the baby eat.

They’re tough, alright! I gave up feeding/watching them when we got Punkin’…. she proved that she could leap up about 10′ and catch them in midair. A baited field, so to speak.
There’s a restaurant at mile marker 367 in TX where they’ve got feeders all the way around the front and sides of the building. No matter which window you sit by you can watch hummers in the spring and summer. Very neat.

Ours are picky little creatures, they will not eat their simple syrup if it’s made with any brand of sugar other than C&H and they’ll dive bomb you every time you walk onto the porch. Sometimes I purposely make a small amount to fill only one feeder with an off brand of sugar just because I find them humorous.
They also tap on the windows when they’re out of food.
We have 4 feeders on the porch and 4 in the trees in the yard and still have to fill them up at least twice a week.
It’s funny though they let us know every year they’re back by one tapping on the window and each day more and more show up.

LOL One day, we noticed one flying around the porch post where one of the feeders usually hung. I had brought it in to fill it. The little bird flew around the post, then flew up and down the post, and back around. He just knew that was where the food was. LOL Then, when I took the feeder out, he was really impatient for me to get it back up and flew to my face chattering. It was so funny. They would also come to the window to see where it was if the feeder wasn’t out.

The ones who intrigued us the most were the mother and baby. It took us a little while to figure out why the one was so little and none, NONE of the other hummingbirds would come around while he was eating. The mother just hovered around him, and didn’t eat, just guarded.

It’s that time of year again, folks, time for another kind of strange, awkward Matthew McConaughey Lincoln commercial. And, yes, checking back when each ad comes out, it’s usually in Decemeber or near the end of the year that these ads are released. This latest ad has the actor hanging out with a group of friends having a generic conversation about something over dinner. They all then head inside, and McConaughey breaks away from the group to walk to a pool table, and he promptly makes a trick shot on the pool table while a woman says “I’ve never seen that before.”
This leads to clips of McConaughey getting into a 2019 Lincoln Nautilus and driving it on beautiful backroads. And before he starts driving, there’s a shot of the instrument cluster with a bunch of driver aid options displayed. The woman’s words come in again, and he follows it up with his own words, “I have.”
Basically, the idea is that the trick shot of the cue ball threading between other billiard balls is like how the Lincoln driver aids help keep the Nautilus under control. Except it’s a vague, awkward way of doing it, which is also par (above par?) for the course of McConaughey Lincoln ads. A much better ad accompanies the actor’s version. This one features a real trick pool player making some clever shots to illustrate the individual features available on the luxury crossover. They’re legitimately nifty shots, and the features are clearly explained. Maybe all of Lincoln’s ads should have this pool player.

It’s nonsense. Its market audience is people who consider themselves superior to other people. It wants people to “get it” when there is nothing to get in other words if you buy the car you must be brilliant because you understood the commercial.
