      Speaking of bosses, this has always been my favorite Dilbert comic.

      About a week ago my boss said that he was wise. My co-worker said I snapped my head around so fast to see if he was joking she thought I’d give myself whiplash.

      He wasn’t joking 😏.

        Shall I regale you with tales of Federal civil service supervisors? Ones picked for every reason other than their knowledge of the job or the ability to chew gum without drooling? How about one of my bosses who had a BS (in every sense of the abbreviation) in a soft science telling me that “my MBA didn’t make me more smarter than him (sic)”.

        Then there was the batch of PC leaders whom, during the Clinton regime, lost a multi-billion dollar program the agency had built due to their inability to manage the program at a functional level. They lost it to a civilian contractor who managed, in a few months starting from ‘zero’ to a level my agency had unsuccessfully tried to reach for years.

        There was more but let’s just say that Federal civil service is where supervisors/bosses/other faux leadership too corrosive for productive business go to keep America functional.

        Rant out.

            Back in the 80s I was the office manager for a well-known televangelist. Highly respected, moral and admired by the public though he was, behind the scenes he turned out to be a small-minded man…but that knowledge came after the following incident.

            I was looking for a new secretary and he had final approval of office staff. After narrowing the process down to one woman, I set an appointment for her to see him. When she left the interview, she was quite happy and I walked with her to the lobby saying I’d be giving her a call (sure that she got the job since she had excellent qualifications and, to me, was likable as a person).

            Returning to my office elated that finally there would be a permanent secretary and not temps to assist me, I was confronted by the Reverend who asked why I thought she’d make a good addition to staff. After my going over all her fine points…experience, pleasant personality, well-honed skills…he said to me, “But she’s overweight. We’d have to hide her when the Board comes for meetings.” Shocked and likely with such a look on my face, I reiterated her qualifications. He then came out with, “I hope you’re not thinking you’re more magnanimous than I am.”

            At the time–still being under the sway of his fame and “Christian” reputation–I was really floored. Disillusionment, you bet! Perhaps needless to say, I shortly left that job and never saw him again in person and most assuredly NOT on TV!

                How fitting!

                A couple of weeks after I left his employ, he sent me a letter on his small personal stationery. I let it sit unopened for several years, then one day I opened it out of curiosity. Yes, it was a hand-written, very self-serving 5-6 page “thank you for your good work; I wish you well; call me if I can do anything for you” kind of thing which I believed about as much as I believed he wasn’t Mr. Phoney-Baloney.

      Didn’t get back in time for breakfast. Look forward to it in the morning. We had a really good time in a timeshare in Weston, FL just west of Ft. Lauderdale. But, it is good to be home.

      I don’t think we should allow this. Everyone should have to comply with the regs. As soon as special accommodations are granted, there are no longer set standards.
