If you are living in England, you might be celebrating Guy Fawkes Night/Bonfire Night later today.

Since I don’t live where this event is celebrated, I’ll share my limited knowledge about it. According to Wikipedia:

Guy Fawkes Night, also known as Guy Fawkes Day, Bonfire Night and Firework Night, is an annual commemoration observed on 5 November, primarily in the United Kingdom. Its history begins with the events of 5 November 1605, when Guy Fawkes, a member of the Gunpowder Plot, was arrested while guarding explosives the plotters had placed beneath the House of Lords. Celebrating the fact that King James I had survived the attempt on his life, people lit bonfires around London; and months later, the introduction of the Observance of 5th November Act enforced an annual public day of thanksgiving for the plot’s failure.

Festivities in Windsor Castle by Paul Sandby, c. 1776

Generally, modern 5 November celebrations are run by local charities and other organisations, with paid admission and controlled access. In 1998 an editorial in the Catholic Herald called for the end of “Bonfire Night”, labelling it “an offensive act”. Author Martin Kettle, writing in The Guardian in 2003, bemoaned an “occasionally nannyish” attitude to fireworks that discourages people from holding firework displays in their back gardens, and an “unduly sensitive attitude” toward the anti-Catholic sentiment once so prominent on Guy Fawkes Night. David Cressy summarised the modern celebration with these words: “The rockets go higher and burn with more colour, but they have less and less to do with memories of the Fifth of November … it might be observed that Guy Fawkes’ Day is finally declining, having lost its connection with politics and religion. But we have heard that many times before.”

Made me smile. Looks alot like that here, and will for days: mostly off and on rain. Last Friday I took a train trip with 4 friends to Meridian, MS for a steam engine fair. It was a beautiful day, and many trees had changed to colors.

Smiles…yes, indeedy! The train trip sounds really fun.

First time I rode a train was in 5th grade and our school outing was to Knott’s Berry Farm in So. Cali. LOL! Great fun for all the kids.

What a delightful memento! I adore family photos and love to see what people looked like when young. Ancestral photos are a particular item of enjoyment, too. Sit me down with a box of slides and a slide projector and I’m a most happy viewer.

            • My Aunt Pat (my dad’s sister) used to bring her fascinating slide shows Up North to The Cottage on holidays & regale us with tales of her many trips to foreign lands. She was/is a perpetually “impoverished” person who dedicates all her “expendable” income to travels. She’s a botanist by education & a mountaineer by passion. She’s climbed mountains on nearly every continent & also was the only woman (at the time) at an Antarctic science station (where she chose to actually swim in the Antarctic Ocean).

This very unusual & active lady is now widowed & has gone through a hip replacement. She looks better at 80 than her kids & grand-kids & can still fit in (& occasionally wears) items she had in High School. She lives on the outskirts of Chicago & though has bought into a lot of leftist garbage she is also a strong believer in Jesus, thankfully.

She hasn’t shared a slide show for years & I (for one) miss them. They did feature plants prominently & her photographic skills are very good. She has had many of her images published in textbooks & has written several books herself.

She & her husband (a self-taught “genius” carpenter who could build an entire house & have all the scrap from that job fit into one small dumpster) built their unique passive solar home “Prairie Sun” in an exclusive neighborhood no one would ever have expected them to be able to afford to live in. She grows prairie grasses in the yard & installed a natural roof with plantings. She gets a yearly permit from the local fire department to burn off the grasses to mimic their natural cycle of regeneration…

I once spent a week with her on a break from grad school & observed her netting birds in her yard & tagging &/or recording them for some federal study. She also took her “hybrid” car (way less common in the ’80s) along various highways to harvest the marsh grasses growing in roadside ditches to sell at various naturalist venues. She still is a strong advocate of natural landscaping & occasionally takes on a client where she assists them in getting their yard/business space more in line with Northern Illinois natural plantings.

I found this pic of her searching her name in bing.com

Here’s the bio from the site where her picture is posted:

              “Pat Armstrong
              Founder, Prairie Sun Consultants

Patricia Armstrong has a Master of Science degree from the University of Chicago in Ecology (Biology-Botany). She previously taught multitudes of nature classes at the Morton Arboretum for 16 years, plus Botany, Ecology, and Geology at the University of Wisconsin Extension, and Michigan State University’s Juneau Icefield Research Program in Alaska.

Pat’s knowledge and understanding of all things wild and free comes from a life-long personal and intimate relationship with Nature that is passionate as well as scientific. She lives in a home she and her husband designed and built to fit into the natural ecosystems of northern Illinois. It is active and passive solar, energy-efficient, and landscaped with over 300 species of native trees, shrubs, prairie grasses and wildflowers approximately 40% of which are edible. Pat is actively involved in living joyfully with Nature. She runs a consulting firm, PRAIRIE SUN CONSULTANTS, to educate and assist others in appreciating and using native plants and wild edible plants in home landscaping.”

My first Fawkes celebration in Scotland was so much fun! We lived next to Rosyth Naval Base and for weeks they started piling up brush, old wood, doors, furniture, just anything you needed burning in the sheep field behind our house. They perched a wooden chair on top! It was a HUGE pile of stuff.
On the week before, the kids made a scarecrow-looking dummy and dragged it around the neighborhood knocking on doors to ask “Penny for the Guy?”. You give them some change, they politely thank you, and away they go. I don’t have a clue what they did with the money, lol.
On Bonfire Night, there was “The Guy”, perched on top of the wooden chair.
The Naval Fire Crew, used military equipment to start and contain the fire, but what a sight to see! The Navy also did a huge fireworks show, and they provided a brass military band to play patriotic songs, and of course ending with “God Save The Queen”!
Afterward, all of our neighbors had parties where we drank into the night and ate a lot of sausages, beans, baked potatoes and I brought a huge pot of chili that disappeared!
    Sweet memories!

  8. Morning All! Had to pop in today with this:

I’m greedy in asking for prayers this week – Before my little eye injury I said I’d help in the polls Tues. This is DH & my 1st time working tomorrow as Registrar of Voters. Went to training session & it was very good. It will be raining and I’m guessing very humid in the gym where voting takes place which may be a problem for my breathing. On the good side I am now taking ventolin occasionally which helps. I also have to use a magnifying glass to see the fine print on the forms sometimes, & I will not be able to use the steroid ointment that day as it clouds my eyes for hours. I would really appreciate your prayers for me, my husband, and all the registrars tomorrow. We are blessed to have a great little group of honest, hardworking people in my town. THANK YOU SO MUCH. Be back probably next week if Doc says OK next Monday. I’ll have to go back & skim read this past week, but I can see the lovely pictures with no strain 🙂 Time to get off the computer, and rest my eyes now, Doc said is actually very stressful on eyes. 😉

Have a great day Everyone! 😉

I’m so glad this election cycle is almost over. We didn’t have many conservatives at the state level who survived the primaries/runoff but many of us have did everything we could to help see them keep their seats, tomorrow we’ll find out if it paid off.

I will be doing something tomorrow I said I would never do again and that is vote for democrats for some statewide offices because thanks to teachers this year we have far too many lifelong democrats running as Republicans. Some disagree with me, but I’d rather the democrats win these offices as to have the worst kind of RINOS ever get elected. In my opinion if we’re going to fix our State Republican party we can’t reward fake Republicans. Just as long as the sorry Democrat Edmondson doesn’t win the governorship, he’s a far leftist idiot. I’m also hoping for a change State Supreme Court justices are sent packing, I’m sick of their liberal bs.

I voted straight republican. And that includes Anti-Trumper Scott Walker. Not that Walker has a vote in seating Justices but Walker has a certain line he has to hold or he will be run out of the state. Tony Evers, Walkers opponent is a compete piece of garbage and would work actively against humanity and freedom. Walker is better than Evers.

I did get to vote for my buddy Jim Sensenbrenner.

I’m with you on some Justices turning in their robes. If we can get a couple of more Justices on the SCOTUS the second the democrats have the power to do it they will turn SCOTUS into an 11 member bench.

I am with prayer hoping to see the electoral extermination of the democratic party and the liberal republicans in my lifetime.

I’m voting almost all Republican, but there are few state offices that I refuse to reward Democrats posing as Republicans. It’s saying something when teachers and union folks are supporting the Republican over the democrat for their State Superintendent.
Then my state Rep, his first term he had a lower conservative rating than many democrats.
The lady running as a Republican for Labor Commissioner was one of the group of Republicans who worked against conservative Republicans in the primaries. They all got together to see that they were defeated, not to mention the slime ball campaign she ran in the primaries.

Almost all of our state Justices voted against our petition to stop the illegal taxes voted in by turncoat Republicans for teacher raises. It would have been one thing if they had just did what they did, but they waited to give their ruling until it was too late to redo the petition to satisfy them. It was a deliberate act, I just hope enough who don’t bother to vote in primaries were paying attention.

I said and I believe that I would have carried out on my stance that if Kavanaugh was not confirmed I would simply never vote again. The Kavanaugh vote gave me reason to believe republicans will be dragged over the finish line by President Trump or they’ll be sent packing.
