Aw. Our neighbor counted we had 120 🙂 . Lots of cuties and almost all little kids with maybe ten very young teens. A very fun evening plus I met our new neighbors who just bought the house down the block 🙂 .

Moved here in December 2001. We’ve never had a single trick or treater. Unless you count the grandkids. Until a couple of years ago my husband bought candy every single year.

Just to be prepared. And imagine this, it was, you guessed it, his favorite candy. 🙄

Same for us. Been here since 2010 and I’ve bought candy every year (his favorite, might as well not waste it) but not a single trick-or-treater. And we live in a neighborhood with houses around and kids that ride bikes on the street. The sense of neighborhood safety that I grew up with doesn’t exist any more. As kids we roamed a dozen blocks in every direction on Halloween night with nary a parent in attendance. Came home with pillowcases full of candy, homemade cookies and caramel apples and a belly full of hot dogs that neighbors were grilling and giving away. Different times. Glad I experienced them.

While I really enjoyed the evening I would love to live out in the woods or on a lake and have norther humans in my immediate viewing field.

I bought a load of candy, I almost didn’t buy Milkyways because I was afraid I’d eat them all after halloween but there are none left so 🙂 . Next year I’ll buy more candy, it was nice to grab a handful and give it to the kids but it was not long before we figured out the candy wouldn’t last for two hours if we kept giving it out by the handful.

Wouldn’t you just know it? The first year I don’t go out and buy candy just in case, we had a single group of 3 kids knock on the door! In all fairness, the front porch light was on, as we had a friend stop by earlier to leave something with us and forgot to turn it off. But the light didn’t matter in previous years. Fortunately there was some left-over campaign candy I could grab quickly for them.

How to tell history has passed you by…
I was watching a program where two under-30 hosts were discussing an ‘ancient’ Civil Defense shelter that was ‘lost’ in one of the legs of the Brooklyn Bridge. They went on about using a plastic bag-lined paper drum as a toilet, the canned water – on and on about things they found strange, exotic and silly about a time well before they were born.
Nerd One tells Nerd Two about the survival crackers shelter residents were supposed to eat and after some blather about how silly they were, who’d expect you to eat these and – well – more blather. Nerd One tells Nerd Two they’re going to open a can of these ancient crackers and taste one so One reaches into a case and pulls out a tin of the crackers and one of the supplied bayonet-type can openers. Both One and Two take turns trying to open the tin with the bottle
opener end of the bayonet opener as if the tins had pry off lids. They’d never seen a bayonet opener, didn’t know you stabbed the blade into the lid, put the notch in the opener’s bow onto the edge and rocked it around the top.
There was a very short bit about them actually opening the can – looks as if someone went across the street and bought a more modern roller-blade type. I just shake my head…

    • Not a comparison to your story, just adding this, because it has to do with young people, not all, but many. This morning I was watching Fox & Friends for just a few minutes and they were discussing an upcoming segment asking young voters (ages approximately 18 to 22) what they thought about the people (invaders) coming across our borders. 🙄
I had to turn it off, because on the highlights, as I’m sure you can guess, they we’re all saying it was fine and no big deal. We need to change the legal voting age to 40… at least. In biblical times, you weren’t even considered a man until you were 40.

That was a great one, but this is the one I meant in context:

Winston S. Churchill supposedly once observed that anyone who was not a liberal at 20 years of age had no heart, while anyone who was still a liberal at 40 had no head.

Apparently it is not proven that Churchill actually said this, although plenty of other people have through history.

My favorite (from his speech after Dunkirk):

The British Empire and the French Republic, linked together in their cause and in their need, will defend to the death their native soil, aiding each other like good comrades to the utmost of their strength. Even though large tracts of Europe and many old and famous States have fallen or may fall into the grip of the Gestapo and all the odious apparatus of Nazi rule, we shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be.

We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God’s good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old.

These kids have been taught that being judgmental of any minority regardless of their behavior’s baaaaaad. Most have been, in the short term, brainwashed.
They believe that we can all have a ‘Friends’or ‘Seinfeld’ kind of existence, that resources are infinite and strangers are all just friends we haven’t met yet.
Those violent and poverty-ridden shithole countries these people are leaving are that way because they’ve been oppressed and don’t have chances, once they get here they’ll all just meld in, learn English, get jobs and party with the crowed.
Those who’ve come here and populate barrios, speak only Spanish, live on welfare and refuse – even generations after arriving – are just…oppressed. They need our love, understanding and more of the resources ripped from the hands of those who earned them.
It’s been a long time in planning and implementation, I have to give the engineers who did it credit for their dedication and perseverance, but they’ve managed to make goodly segments of four generation think that up is down and good is bad.

They believe the media can’t all be lying. Ummm, yes, they can!

Even before the lying became a 24/7 thing, the media used to get their talking points from SOMEWHERE because they’d all end up broadcasting almost exactly the same thing. Rush has played various alphabet networks and big names doing that for a long time.

It’s funny, but when I try searching for a video or audio of left-wing hosts saying the same thing station to station, all I find from the lefties at Google is stuff about Sinclair having their talking heads say the same thing about fake news. LOL! I know there are lots of compilations of lefties doing the same but how to locate those vids is the challenge.

  9. Morning Everyone!
Here is a 1934 Sat Eve Post cover. The top & bottom required quite a bit of clean-up, and I could never get the signature clear, but it is nice artwork and the subject is nice.

Here is another Halloween image, but with no information at all. Because the clothes & cocker spaniel were both popuar in the 40’s or 50’s, that’s what my guess is for the date. It’s interesting how the boy and girl, and even her hair style, are similar 10 – 20 years later from the 1934 cover. The artwork is not as sophisticated, but it is a nice image because of the subject.

Have a great day everyone 🙂
Have to get that outside work done today before it rains again!

Frank, Julie, and I were doing our usual Tuesday night karaoke thing last night when shortly after 10, in walked . . . Frank, Julie, and I!
They bellied up to the bar and got the same drinks, we usually get.
A while later, the music for Madonna’s, “La Isla Bonita” starts, and I look around (there’s no stage) to see who’s doing “my” song. It was me! I mean, my other me, who then handed me an extra mike so I could sing along with me!

It was the funniest thing! Three of our friends conspired to dress up like us, drink like us, and sing like us! Except the genders were reversed; two women became Frank and I, and a guy became Julie.

Frank: Asian guy with long straight black hair in a pony tail, baseball cap with “YES” band logo, horizontal striped golf polo shirt, black fanny pack worn in front, blue jeans, Amstel Lite.

Julie: Long dark hair, heavy lipstick, black nail polish, t-shirt with no sleeves, tattoos, jeans, sandals, black leather jacket, and a Mimosa.

Me: Black “Billy Jack” style hat with silver chain hat band, big eyeglasses, black “Every Little Thing Gonna Be All Right” Bob Marley t-shirt, dark slacks, cell phone in belt holster, high school class ring on right hand, gold bracelet on left wrist, and a glass of red wine.

The crowd loved it; much hilarity ensued. I’m still grinning. 🙂

    Jewish Pittsburgh Welcomes Trump

    Dear Mr. President:

This past Shabbat, Jews were murdered as they prayed in synagogue, in our neighborhood. The evil that prompted this senseless act has existed from time immemorial. It is our response to that evil that defines us. This is not a time for divisiveness, but for unity. We stand with Rabbi Myers of the Tree of Life Synagogue in welcoming you, President Trump, to our community.

In addition, we want to express our gratitude to you and your administration for your unwavering support of Israel, both in moving the American Embassy to Jerusalem and in courageously standing with Israel at the United Nations.

Your support of Israel and American Jewry is appreciated, especially in the face of the virulent anti-Semitism our community suffered just days ago. Our hearts are breaking as we think of the grieving families and those fighting for life, our neighbors. We are reminded of the fragility of life and the importance of loving one another.

The Torah, in Genesis 12:3, says those who bless Israel will be blessed. May G-d continue to bless you, your family, and the United States of America.

But to be on that ice would be surreal. Especially on my bike, with a giant JBL bluetooth speaker. I would do that, too.

I love quadrotor drone + GoPro videos. This is my backyard:

    • I ride to the end of this pier at least once a week. I stand there and wonder. I look back east, up the river, and at 6:30 AM I take pictures of sunrises. Because everyone takes sunset pics. If you took one, 300 other people just took that same picture. Nobody is taking pictures of sunrises over South Haven. I’ve never been to the end of the North Pier, or even on it. This is my pier. I can ride my bike to where I was born in 10 minutes, starting at the end of the pier. It’s my back yard.

And I’ve met the guy that did this incredible video. Owns a real estate company in town. I’ve seen three of his drones in the air at once, most perilously close to the Independence Day fireworks.

Also, I walk a lot, and I am always getting lots of steps and a lot of exercise. But every time I walk or exercise even mildly I get a very red face, even if I am not hot or working hard. It’s very embarrassing. People think I might be having a stroke and I’m not even short of breath.
