Babbage Difference Engine

This photograph of an early analog computing machine was taken in 1949 at the Lewis Flight Propulsion Laboratory, which is today the John Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio.

When Charles Babbage created the first type of computer, no-one could have realized how later computers would influence the world. Even when the first microcomputers were sold in the 1970s, few saw how powerful and wide-ranging they would become. The pace of computer development took most people by surprise It enabled more efficient communication and databases. Through the internet, computers have been used to reduce the distance of communication.

    Today’s illustration is by Stockton Mulford of a father, son, & happy dog preparing to hunt. Perhaps they’re huntng that lovely elk on the last magazine cover posted. I thought the dog reminded me of Tucker. (Sorry I have not had the time to fix the edges. ;-} )

    Personal rant. Don’t buy a cheap sofa.

    Several years ago I bought a beautiful dark brown leather sofa. Really nice LOOKING. After a while, the thin ‘leather’ began to develop small holes, then larger holes … THEN the straps holding up the cushions began to sag badly. The sofa seating surface is now held together with dark brown duct tape, and covered with a dark brown (good quality) sofa cover that has pretty good gripping capability, and doesn’t slip TOO much! Also have added foam where the sagging is worst, and added a full length foam pad that is ‘upholstered’ with another of the sofa covers.

    I recently ordered a new dark brown sofa – this time covered in a good quality cloth – from La-Z-Boy. It cost quite a bit more than the cheapo couch, but I got it on sale, so it isn’t as expensive as it might have been. Good warranty. Also got 5-yr pet warranty (stains, rips – got a 1/2 off discount on that).

    Don’t be like me!

    I could get my new sofa before Thanksgiving, or shortly after.

      Good afternoon Stella,

      I had to stop at the Walmart on the way home this afternoon. A Black family with a lot of children in the SUV crossed in front of me as I was walking toward the store door.

      There was a light bar on the hood with the lights on which first attracted my attention because it was the middle of the afternoon on a bright clear day. Next I heard the children yelling hi, hello, good afternoon and they were all waving. I thought they were just having a fun family afternoon after church. I smiled and waved back.

      Had I known what their placards were saying I would have been smiling, waving and jumping up and down.

      Plastered all over the back of the SUV were Trump/Pence/MAGA yard signs. They probably had to put them back there to keep them from blowing off.

      After seeing your post I wondered if they were part of the #WalkAway movement.

      To fully appreciate the courage of this family you need to know our county is majority black. It has a higher drug, prostitution, and murder rate than the combined 3 neighboring counties. This week a brother of one of the members of the church was beaten senseless and robbed in his home – – so a home invasion. (The brothers are white and very old. I don’t know anything about the thugs.) Please keep this brave MAGA family and the beaten and robbed brother in your prayers.

      Anyway, Hallelujah for the #WalkAway movement. What courage some of these people have. For others the new party affiliation may just be reflection of how they have been voting anyway.

    Darn. It is the first cool night and I have had the windows open for the first time since summer hit, about March, because the humidity is down. But, now that the sun has gone down, I guess somebody figures it is time to light up the fireplace and the smoke is billowing through my apt. I am going to have to close up and turn on the air conditioner fan to filter the smoke out. 😦 {sigh}

    As of Sunday, the odds of the GOP keeping the House are at -140. That means you would need to bet $140 on the Republicans to win $100 if they stay in the majority. The Democrats are at +110, meaning a $100 bet would win you $110 if the Democrats manage to wrest control of the House.

    The site also has the Republicans favored to hold the White House in the 2020 presidential election. The GOP is at -170 in that race, compared to +130 for the Democrats.
