Pascal’s Calculator

Pascal’s calculator is a mechanical calculator invented by Blaise Pascal in the early 17th century. It was called the arithmetic machine and later became known as the Pascaline. Pascal was led to develop a calculator by the laborious arithmetical calculations required by his father’s work as supervisor of taxes in Rouen.

The first solid state calculator was invented in the 1960s, with digital calculators using microprocessors being invented in the 1970s.

Oh lordie, I can remember the huge steampunk desktop calculators with the nixie tubes we had in the statistics lab in the early 70s. Whew, large, reeking of ozone and scary. Then came the Texas Instrument TI-125 and we blew $125 for it at the BX – it had FOUR(!!!!) computational functions!

As I said before, I can date myself military-wise by learning how to do artillery computations on the old slide rule and then on the hand-held calculator that replaced it. Come to think of it I can date myself by having used a slide rule to do statistics before that chugging nixie tube bearing calculator showed up.

Don’t know the year this interesting episode of CBS Sunday Morning was televised….”Marni Nixon: Singing voice of the stars”

Nixon passed away from breast cancer in 2016. Charles Osgood is still around, though.

A number of times Nixon’s voice was too “perky” for me. However, after listening to some short clips of the stars singing their own songs, it’s obvious why their singing performances needed to be dubbed. I just watched Patty Duke singing in VALLEY OF THE DOLLS and she was hilariously bad from every standpoint. LOL!

      Good morning Lucille,

Fun entertainment history on a very talented lady. The little scenes from the old movies was fun too. I saw every one of the movies shown in this story.

It was also fun hearing Ms. Nixon say that her family discovered early that she had perfect pitch. My grandson has perfect pitch too. His teacher had him sing the notes as he learned the piano. She wanted him to join a boy’s choir but he was completely uninterested. That has held true to today.

I on the other hand, can’t carry a tune in a bucket. Having said that my grandchildren and I have always sung together in the car. We have great fun as we travel the beautiful NC highways.

      Have a great day.

      • You reminded me that my mom also has/had perfect pitch & she played the piano starting at age 4 & music (choir style) has been a big part of her life. Ironically she & my dad grew up in the heart of the Motor City in the midst of the Mo-Town era but they completely ignored that cultural phenomenon, Mom being into choir-style stuff & dad not able to carry a tune in a bucket.

Years later, in 1975, my dad worked very hard to sing passably so he could join my mom on their church choir’s Bicentennial Tour of England for three weeks. For years after that adventure my dad would often call my mom “her ladyship”. He didn’t stick with choir after that (he was always into sports & not music) so the bucket started to leak again!

After I found my mom’s birth family she exchanged cassette tapes with her cousin (or possibly half-sister–long story) & her cousin was moved to tears hearing Mom’s voice for she sounded so much like my mom’s birth mother’s sister. It was a surreal time-warp that served to solidify the reality of that blood relationship revealing that even though my mom had never known these people for more than 60 years & had grown up in completely different circumstances (in the heart of Detroit vs rural Michigan) they had more in common, including interests & talents, than any of us ever imagined!

Well, there never was an Adolph Hitler, anyway…unless he’s speaking of Adolf. Imbecile! I really hate it when people are so ignorant they can’t even spell the name of one of the most significant and evil men to have ever been born.

Of course, there’s those little bumps in Bartlett’s recitation of Adolf’s virtues, which we all can spell out for him. And, seeing as Hitler only had a “wife” for a few minutes before they offed themselves, being “faithful” to her was a piece of cake.

Someone needs to kick the living daylights out of Brucie…whoever the heck he is.

    Good morning all,

Yesterday we picked up our grandbabies from band practice and took them to dinner then to a Krispy Kreme Doughnuts for dessert. No prob on the carbs because their next events were football for him and swimming for her. When they finally got home last night it would be showers, a little visiting with Mom and Dad then bed. Our part of their evening was just old fashioned fun in spending time with them and catching up on their lives and seeing what is happening.

Time is compacted on Tuesdays because the babies activities are just one right after the other. Very often they work on homework in the car. Sometimes they have reading or they quiz each on subjects that will be tested the next day. Yesterday they worked on memorizing the Preamble to the Constitution.

Many of you mentioned grand babies yesterday. Because some of the study techniques and tools are so different today, I wanted to share with you how our babies studied for a quiz scheduled for today on the Preamble.

They sang the Preamble. Yep, they sang it. What a fun and memorable way to memorize it. The tune they sang it to is in this video.

    Preamble to the Constitution

We the people of the United States,
in order to form a more perfect union,
    establish justice,
    insure domestic tranquility,
    provide for the common defense,
    promote the general welfare,
and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity,
do ordain and establish this Constitution
for the United States of America.

    Note: Posterity means future generations.

Kids today have many more activities these days. I’m sure it helps them be more well-rounded, but it’s tough on parents and grand-parents getting them from point A to Point B. My GS is only 2, but I was carting him around last week from preschool to play dates, etc… wore me out, but it was fun.

        SandandSea,

You have years and years of joy ahead of you. You never know where those joys will come from. There are surprises around every corner.

When my grand children were a little younger than your grandson I picked personal songs for them. It was 25 miles between our house and theirs so when we were traveling we would sing songs together. (Still do and they still want me to sing their personal songs occasionally.) Their favorites were always their personal songs.

My grandson’s song was sung to the tune of Mary Had a Little Lamb.

        His lyrics:

        Verse 1
____ _____ had a little dog, little dog, little dog,

____ _____ had a little dog, his tail was white as snow*.

        Verse 2

Everywhere that ____ _____ went, ____ _____ went, ____ _____ went, his dog was sure to go.

It followed him to school one day, school one day, school one day

It followed him to school one day, which was against the rule.

        Verse 3

It made the children laugh and play, laugh and play, laugh and play

It made the children laugh and play, to see a dog at school.

Of course when we got to the point of laugh and play, the laughter would just bubble out of him.

*They had a beagle then and of course his tail was white as snow.

Enjoy every minute you can with you grandson. It is unbelievable how fast time flies.

She learned it at a classmate’s house (a very liberal Christian family) & said it was probably the best thing she ever learned from them. They wouldn’t even let their son play with squirt guns because of how evil guns are! My daughter is a bow & gun hunter–& a strong Conservative Christian!

Lou Dobbs said in the video above the invasion was orchestrated.

Watch this video with Griff Jenkins. Starting at 1:10 the “immigrant” says

      “Situation of Honduras”

      then she says:

      “Criminals”

I guarantee you illegals do not talk that way and do not use words like situation and criminals.

We lived in Southern CA during the slow takeover of that part of the state by illegal immigrants. We were constantly around illegals in one capacity or another. They did not have a vocabulary or pronunciation of words that anywhere approached this “illegals” pronunciation and use of “situation” or “criminals”.

I have no idea who that woman was but the reason she had her face covered with a hoodie was because she is not an uneducated illegal. She is part of the orchestration.

        Talking about orchestration:

Matt Gaetz talks about criminal thugs and national security in the Lou Dobbs video above. In the video yesterday by Bill Whittle talked about Honduras having one of the highest murder rates in the world.

MS-13 and the 18th Street gang come from Honduras. They are likely in this invasion group.

This is a little snippet from Wikipedia on Honduras crime:

“ … Homicide violence reached a peak in 2012 with an average of 20 homicides a day.[2] Cities such as San Pedro Sula and the Tegucigalpa have registered homicide rates among the highest in the world. The violence is associated with drug trafficking as Honduras is often a transit point, and with a number of urban gangs, mainly the MS-13 and the 18th Street gang. …”

Generally if you don’t learn a language by a certain age you have an accent and if you do learn it young enough you can still pick up the accent of your teacher. I go for the ‘immigrant’ being a plant.

Today after reading the disgusting tweet from the Hitler advocate shown unthread, I went looking for the name of a Jewish female Allied spy sent to France during WWII. Having seen her photo in a 1970s non-fiction book about the OSS, I believe, I was particularly struck by her condition in the photo. She’d been captured, stripped, tortured and was sitting on the floor trying to protect her body from the photographer, a despairing look on her face. She didn’t come home and so it’s assumed she was murdered. That photo has popped up in my consciousness from time-to-time…totally haunting.

Found this article about Allied spies, instead, but none of the descriptions seem right for her…”6 Incredible Female Spies of World War II.” https://explorethearchive.com/6-incredible-female-spies-of-world-war-ii

I wonder if collaborator Soros ever saw her photo and dismissed it as unimportant, having nothing to do with him.
