Until I saw that poster today, I never knew there were two types of bison in North America…even after grammar school studies on the various Plains Indian tribes which hunted them.

I didnt either. We went to l.a. natural history museum and saw the stuffed buffalo vs bison and discussed the difference.
I always liked bison. I gave kiddo my own stuffy bison that I got when I was little. He loves it.

Stella’s grandson’s bread made me think it’s time to make Chicken Noodle soup. I may make some hawaiian bread and soup in the morning.
Prep: 15 min. Cook: 45 min. + standing
Makes
10 servings (3-1/2 quarts)
Ingredients2-1/2 pounds bone-in chicken thighs1-1/4 teaspoons pepper, divided1/2 teaspoon salt1 tablespoon canola oil1 large onion, chopped1 garlic clove, minced10 cups chicken broth4 celery ribs, chopped4 medium carrots, chopped2 bay leaves1 teaspoon minced fresh thyme or 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme3 cups uncooked kluski or other egg noodles (about 8 ounces)1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley1 tablespoon lemon juice
DirectionsPat chicken dry with paper towels; sprinkle with 1/2 teaspoon pepper and salt. In a 6-qt. stockpot, heat oil over medium-high heat. Add chicken in batches, skin side down; cook until dark golden brown, 3-4 minutes. Remove chicken from pan; remove and discard skin. Discard drippings, reserving 2 tablespoons.Add onion to drippings; cook and stir over medium-high heat until tender, 4-5 minutes. Add garlic; cook 1 minute longer. Add broth, stirring to loosen browned bits from pan. Bring to a boil. Return chicken to pan. Add celery, carrots, bay leaves and thyme. Reduce heat; simmer, covered, until chicken is tender, 25-30 minutes.Transfer chicken to a plate. Remove soup from heat. Add noodles; let stand, covered, until noodles are tender, 20-22 minutes.Meanwhile, when chicken is cool enough to handle, remove meat from bones; discard bones. Shred meat into bite-size pieces. Return meat to stockpot. Stir in parsley and lemon juice. Adjust seasoning with salt and remaining 3/4 teaspoon pepper. Remove bay leaves.

I like chicken thighs much better than chicken breast. Sounds good!
LikeLiked by 3 people
Breast is good if not over-cooked. Internal temp of 150 is good.
We like to slather chicken breasts with mayonaisse, sprinkle on herbs & spices (Trader Joes 21 Seasoning Salute), then bake at 400 for 20 minutes, or until the internal temp hits at least 145.
LikeLike
The thighs have a better texture and flavor. Personal preference. Don’t have to slather them with anything. Never dry, always delicious.
I generally shake in flour/salt/pepper/tarragon or marjoram, then saute in oil/butter. Flour and herbs are not necessary, but good. Eat with or without a sauce. Also personal preference is to make my own herb mix. That way I know exactly what is in it.
If you don’t like to saute, poaching is good, then season.
LikeLike
I totally agree with all you just said.
I would never buy an herb/spice mix, but my wife had a sample at Trader Joe’s and was sold. She makes that dish, not me.
I’ve recently taken to peeling all the skin and fat off a whole chicken, rendering it in a dry pan, then setting aside the cracklins and frying the chicken in the chicken fat. Crunch up the cracklins and put them in the gravy. Or on a salad. or . . . 🙂

I’m going to try this. My chicken soup never compared to my mother’s. It just never had the flavor hers did. I don’t eat chicken thighs, I don’t like the meat, but that is where a lot of the flavor in the soup comes from. So, I am going to give it a try.

Gil uses chicken broth in her soup too, and the quality of that is important. I have used Chicken Cooking Stock (Swanson makes it, but I’m sure others do too), which I think is better than regular chicken broth.

This is what I use, for everything. Even when I make a pot of beans. I get a big one from smart n final. And its roasted with chicken fat in it.
You can get regular, organic, organic redumed sodium in chicken, beef, or vegetarian.

I use that and the vegetarian stock. Sometimes on meatless Fridays I make a potato or tomato soup, so I usually try to keep both so that I can have a choice. I love the flavors.

I keep the chicken and beef in the pantry as an adjunct but now that I have the time I make/freeze my own stocks. It’s sorta labor intensive…a bit…but it works out better in the long run.

I still have some turkey stock in my freezer. Don’t know if it’s still good, though. Usually I don’t have spare poultry parts, since I live alone.

Plan a plan B’ dinner, pull the broth out and melt it down. If it smells bad while being cooked down – toss it and go to Plan B.
It may have lost some taste but that’s not hard to deal with – some bouillon ( lighten up on salt elsewhere), some boxed broth cooked down, good spices, lotsa fresh veggies sauteed in butter, that jarred garlic (has more presence than fresh garlic) and you can finish with a drop of sour cream in the serving bowl if you’d like.
If you’ve wet-cooked down some cheap turkey parts ahead you get a nice ‘gravy’ in the pan- don’t forget to add some boxed chicken or turkey broth to the covered pan to keep the exudate from burning and give you extra broth. If you’re fat-aversive let the broth cool to room temp in a bowl and when it’s at room temp cover and put in the fridge. Next day the fat’s risen to the surface and hardened and you can just pick it right off, leaving you a nice rich and flavorful goo to add to the broth – viola, taste’s back.

I do still have a couple of turkey necks in the freezer …
I make turkey broth a couple of times every winter. My butcher always has extra turkey necks before the holidays, so I buy some and freeze them. Turkey broth can’t be beat for turkey gravy on Thanksgiving! And in the turkey pot pie a couple of days after.

I do turkey and andouille gumbo, like clockwork.
One of the best NOLA snax is boiled turkey necks. Turkey necks are a social thing, you berls ’em (****adjust the hot to your liking****) and sits around gnawin’ on them while youse chit chats. You makes up a bunch and haz ’em wid beer or strongish drinx like a goos and spicy bloddy mary.
This is Kermit’s recipe – for most y’all I’d severely adjust the crab boil and probably forget that cayenne for the most part – but you can make it up with hot sauce when you serve.
I’d probably cut back by at least half on the turkey necks and sub small red potatoes and ears of corn cut in half – that makes the boil – just like you would for crawfish.
It’s a trail-and-error thang, but even the failures work as you’re more likely to over than under cook and you can always cook the necks and corn more while the potatoes make great roasted taters- cooked or undercooked.

Your mother may have made her stock from a stewing chicken, which you used to be able to buy at a butcher. I haven’t seen one in quite a while.
ADD: Another thing I use, sometimes just to boost the flavor of a dish, is this product:
https://ship.kroger.com/p/098308002024/better-than-bouillon-premium-roasted-chicken?cid=shp_yb_0000.ship.Michigan+Ship+-+Loss+Leaders&msclkid=98eabcb13e0619b31451e7759ae7cf73&gclid=CNHiiOfUiN4CFZHWDQodteQO6Q&gclsrc=ds
It only takes a little; it’s very concentrated.

Sometimes I’ll filet most of the meat off a whole chicken, then pressure cook for an hour the bones, neck, gizzard, heart, and wing tips covered with water and a little vinegar (1 tspn per gallon) to correct the water’s pH, since it’s 8.0 (alkaline) out of the faucet. After it cools enough to open the cooker, I use a potato masher to mash up the now soft bones to free the marrowy goodness, then strain it.
Same with pork and beef bones.

I actually love mornings. And people. And morning people.
I ride around town at 6 AM, sometimes. Everyone I meet at that hour is also happy to be alive, waiting for the sun to come up. It’s very seldom I meet someone at that hour who isn’t happy to be alive and awake. And I don’t even drink coffee any more. Lots of tea, no coffee. Give me some English Breakfast, or some Chai, with honey, on ice.

Chinese spy lured to Belgium by FBI, extradited to US to face trial
https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/chinese-spy-lured-to-belgium-by-fbi-extradited-to-us-to-face-trial
In a clandestine operation that marks a ramping up of American actions against economic espionage ordered by Beijing, FBI agents lured a Chinese spy to Belgium before spiriting him to the U.S.
Yanjun Xu, a senior officer with the Ministry of State Security, or MSS, now faces up to 25 years in jail. He was arrested in Belgium six months ago and charged with conspiring and attempting to commit economic espionage by stealing trade secrets from multiple U.S. aviation and aerospace companies, including GE Aviation.
Bill Priestap, head of the FBI’s counterintelligence division, described the extradition of a Chinese intelligence officer as “unprecedented.” It is unclear whether other U.S. intelligence agencies, like the CIA, were involved.
Xu’s speciality area of espionage may be narrow but you can bet he has a nice quiver full of information about things that are not his area of expertise.

Its a brave man who actually has his priorities very straight to do this. I may just buy an album.
“Michael Bublé has announced that he is quitting music for good following his young son’s battle with cancer, citing an unwillingness to “stomach” what the veteran singer described as a culture of “celebrity narcissism.”
In an emotional interview with the Daily Mail, the 43-year-old Canadian singer said he planned to retire after the release of his upcoming album Love.
“I don’t have the stomach for it any more,” he said. “The celebrity narcissism. This is my last interview. I’m retiring. I’ve made the perfect record and now I can leave at the very top.”
Bublé, who has sold over 75 million records and won four Grammys, also opened up about his son Noah’s diagnosis with hepatoblastoma, an extremely rare form of cancer, which he says pushed him to question all aspects of life and at what mind made him to”want to die.”
“You just want to die,” he said of medical dealing with his son’s ordeal. “I don’t even know how I was breathing. My wife was the same and even though I was the stronger of the two of us, I wasn’t strong. My wife was… I’m sorry, I can’t make it to the end of the sentence… let’s just say we find out who we are with these things.”
“Going through this with Noah, I didn’t question who I was, I just questioned everything else,” he continued. “Why are we here? Is this all there is? Because if this is all there is, there has to be something bigger.”
Noah, who is one of Bublé’s three children with his wife Luisana Lopilato, an Argentinian model and actress, is said to be recovering well with his cancer in remission.
“I’ve been to hell,” he said in an interview with the Australian Herald Sun in July. “I don’t talk about the whole story, not even to my friends because it hurts too much. It’s my boy. He’s a superhero, he doesn’t need to relive it over and again. But I’ve been to hell. And you know what, hell seems like a really nice place to vacation compared to where we’ve been.” ”

That is so sad. I hope Micheal has something to fall back on, for a career.
He’s one of the best, of all time.

Bublé was a complete self absorbed ass who thought the sun rose and set on him because of his voice, he even admits as much in the interview but anyone who saw the interview that I saw of the Bublé before he was married with children could have told you what an awful person Bublé was. I stopped listening to him after I saw the interview, he was totally self absorbed or as he put it a lofty member of the “celebrity narcissism” club.
His self absorption still comes through, even as he is changing his life, My wife was the same and even though I was the stronger of the two of us, I wasn’t strong. Why say that? No one needs to know he considers that he himself was the strong one. We are all works in progress and I wasn’t going to say anything other than my positive comment but to hear that you find him leaving the world of the self absorbed music industry behind because of love of family and wanting to find out what is important in life, what is bigger than all of this, in other words seeking God really surprises me.
I see this as entirely good thing. So Bublé doesn’t sing commercially, so what? His children aren’t exposed to the perverts that dominate the industry, Bublé is a vain man trying to become a humble dad who puts his children, wife, family first, what can possibly be sad about that?
I am not judging Bublé. God alone knows how much work I need but sheesh! The guy is doing a good and holy thing. How can that be a sad thing?

Ten generations back would make it what year? According to one Internet site: “The average age of mothers at birth of their first child was 20 and at the last birth 31, giving a mean of 25.5 years per female generation — considerably above the 20 years often attributed to primitive cultures. Husbands were six to 13 years older, giving a male generational interval of 31 to 38 years.”
It’s pretty unlikely (like NIL) an Indian MALE had a relationship which produced an offspring with a European FEMALE those many years ago. So we have to assume that a woman is the founding Indian ancestor of Senator Warren. That means the relationship THAT GAVE WARREN HER HIGH CHEEKBONES happened approximately 255 years ago, thus 1763 being the banner year which heralded Warren’s claim to being an American Indian of unknown origin according to the DNA expert (although she says she’s Cherokee, I think).
Questions: What political party does the DNA guy belong to? Did he know it was Senator Warren’s DNA he was testing?
The likelihood that Warren’s supposed Indian ancestor’s offspring and descendants all married only Europeans is also NIL! Indians generally married Indians. Now if the original Indian ancestor went with her mate to live in a whites only village, it’s a possibility, of course, that they all married Europeans. But I ain’t buying it.

Wow, Lucille, you sound like a cynic. LOL Just like me. My first question, too, was, which party is he affiliated with? We know the Dems lie……….about everything. I do disagree with whatever Internet site said that women had their first child at 20. That may be true now, but why would it be true that far in the past? There was a time when women of 21 or so were considered old maids if they weren’t married. Both of my grandmothers were married at about 15 around the turn of the century. But, having said that, I am not sure the rest of the logic is far off.

On the paternal side of the family: great-great-grandfather married in 1829 (b.1803) to a woman b.1813 (they had 12 children!)…great-grandfather married in 1875 to my great-grandmother b.1854…grandfather married in 1898 at 21 and grandmother was also 21.
I have no info on the maternal side except both grandparents were married at 30 in 1912, she being a “spinster” who was a professional milliner; he being a mailman who had been divorced (quite a scandal for the time and not until my mother was a teenager did she know she had a half-sister).

Well that didn’t work out so well for Elizabeth.
Cherokee Nation issues statement on Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s DNA test results
https://www.kjrh.com/news/local-news/cherokee-nation-issues-statement-on-sen-elizabeth-warren-s-dna-test-results
“A DNA test is useless to determine tribal citizenship. Current DNA tests do not even distinguish whether a person’s ancestors were indigenous to North or South America. Sovereign tribal nations set their own legal requirements for citizenship, and while DNA tests can be used to determine lineage, such as paternity to an individual, it is not evidence for tribal affiliation. Using a DNA test to lay claim to any connection to the Cherokee Nation or any tribal nation, even vaguely, is inappropriate and wrong. It makes a mockery out of DNA tests and its legitimate uses while also dishonoring legitimate tribal governments and their citizens, who ancestors are well documented and whose heritage is prove. Senator Warren is undermining tribal interests with her continued claims of tribal heritage.”

i found this persuasive. Your thoughts?

Not persuasive to me. Old territory (and this is an old article). Everyone, including Judge Kavanaugh, is considered innocent until proven guilty. There is no proof that he lied. There are a lot of holes in Ms Ford’s testimony (which changed as time went on, btw).
Unless there is proof, or more convincing evidence, it’s time to put this one to bed.

From the article;
Kavanaugh says that he never attended any event like this. Like what, though?
The author concluded that this is demonstrably a lie.
Wrong.
Kavanaugh was objectively referring to an event where two young men sexually assaulted a young woman.
That is why Kavanaugh refers to it as an “event” and not a party or social gathering.
The article concludes about this statement of Kavanaugh Okay, so this was a weird lie to tell, because everyone goes to these sorts of events and he had them on his own calendar.
Deliberate obtuseness on the authors part.
Speaking of lying.
Everyone in America knew that Grassley extended Ford the opportunity of Ford remains in her home and investigators going to her home where she might feel more comfortable telling her story.
Everyone except Ford as she claimed under oath that she didn’t watch the news. Yet according to this article she says;
”It was not really a party like the news has made it sound.”
So Ford lied.
Either she watched news about her allegations or she didn’t. She made mutually exclusive statements. Otherwise know as an evidentiary lie.
The author’s next big gun is that Kavanaugh’s calendar directly contradicts Kavanaugh’s statement;
I [was] in D.C. on Saturday night, August 7th. But I was at a small gathering at Becky’s house in Rockville with Matt, Denise, Laurie and Jenny. Their names are all listed on my calendar. I won’t use their last names here. And then on the weekend of August 20 to 22nd, I was staying at the Garrets’ (ph) with Pat (ph) and Chris (ph) as we did final preparations for football training camp.
The author of the article chimes in None of these names are the names Ford cites. Clearly she knows nothing about his summer. But wait: Let’s look at the entry for July 1st, one Kavanaugh did not cite in his list of “parties with people who are not the people Ford cited.”
In fact, she cited a small gathering with P.J. and Judge before he released his calendar confirming it.
“to Timmy’s for skis w/Judge, Tom, PJ, Bernie, Squi.”
Except the number of people at the gathering that Kavanugh had written in his calendar mentions 5 other boys, not 3 or 4 and he does not mention any females. Also Ford testified that the gathering where she was attacked was not a planned event so reasonably the gathering would not be on Kavanaugh’s calendar as it was not planned but a spontaneous get together.
So the author shoots himself in the foot with that smoking gun.
I’ve stopped reading it.
The Leland “bald faced-lie” has me out. The author himself is making a bald-faced lie when he says this.
It’s nonsense.
Sorry John this is an attempt to besmirch a good man who has zero history of any kind of sexual assault or misconduct. I will never ever for the look of pain on the faces of his wife and daughters during his confirmation. Diane Feinstein, Christine Ford and all of the other people who knew this was a farce, a political charade, are the attackers and Brett Kavanaugh and his family are the victims.
Few things in our political climate have made me as angry as I was when I saw his wife and girls and the toll that these lies have taken on them.

Now that you point out those things, I can see them, but I didn’t see them on my own, which bothers me. I don’t like being deceived.

If I bother to read anything written by anyone who is defending any Leftist movement or cause I read it knowing that there is a 99% chance that the author is lying. I have a very fined tuned BS detector.

Now that I’m spending less time on the Big I, there are more hours to spend cleaning out files. It’s fun discovering articles, newsletters and story ideas, plus a whole bunch of scripts I wrote nearly 40 years ago…some I don’t remember at all…but it’s my handwriting on the corrections. Absolutely reams of paper.
Another fun item was the final bill (9/9/78) for my second trip to Hawaii. I stayed seven days at a hotel-room-cost of $146.40. Telegram or long distance telephone services, or the cafe were not utilized. LOL! Seems to me the hotel (long since torn down) was a block from the beach.
I’d gone to the islands for both a vacation and to do some research into a 1932 murder case where a U. S. Navy officer (Thomas Massie) stationed at Pearl and several of his subordinates plus his mother-in-law kidnapped an ethnic-Hawaiian man (Joseph Kahahawai), killed him, and the men were caught with the body in their vehicle as they drove up a mountain to dispose of him. The murder was in retaliation for Kahahawai alleged “assault” of the officer’s wife–on her say-so only, of course, there being no evidence–and the officer was avenging her alleged honor. Convoluted story but the men and Mom were convicted but served one hour in the governor’s office. Several books were published in the 60s, I believe, and numerous articles at the time.
Amazingly enough when I went to the state archives, the clerks actually brought me their files full of ORIGINAL investigation and testimony transcripts and the subsequent Pinkerton Report done at the behest of the governor apparently because he felt somewhat guilty about commuting the conviction to the one-hour served. My writing partner and I worked up a story idea to present to a studio based on my research, but, alas, a fictionalized TV movie was already in the works with a plot nearly the same as the actual incident but with names changed. So our project didn’t get off the ground. The Pinkerton Report, BTW, proved Kahahawai was innocent of any crime.

OMG We went to see Gosnell today. What a fantastic movie. It was so well done. They didn’t Hollywood it up……you know, bedroom scenes, cleavage, car chases, etc. My mind is kinda in a jumble because there are so many things I want to say. All of the actors were great. I have so much respect for Earl Billings who played Gosnell. I think it took courage to take the part and he did it so well………….very creepy. And, there was one guy, who played the partner of Woody, the detective. I kept looking at him and know I have had a strong attachment to him for some reason. But, I couldn’t figure out what I had seen him in before. He is Alfonso Rachel……..Zo, from Zonation. No wonder I recognized him.
Nick Searcy was the director, and he played Gosnell’s attorney. He did a really good job of both……….I couldn’t stand him. LOL
One thing I think Dean Kane said in an interview was that when they went on the set the first time and saw all the bags and filth that were strewn around, that they said it had been overdone. So the set people showed the actors actual pictures that they had used to construct the sets and they actually did not put out as much as was in the pictures. If you go, stay through all the credits. They show the actual pictures of scenes in the movie.
I couldn’t believe how many people were in the theater. Probably about 25. This is at noon, so usually there are only a few. When the show was over and the lights came on, nobody spoke. They just filed out of the theater silently.
Very, very well done movie. Too bad it won’t have a chance for an award. 😦
