Gov. Doug Ducey will appoint former Sen. Jon Kyl to the Senate following GOP Sen. John McCain’s death late last month, according to a spokesman for the governor’s office.
Ducey, a Republican, was required by law to appoint a member of McCain’s party to fill his seat. Because of the timing of McCain’s death, the governor’s appointment would serve through most of 2020. A special election is expected to be held in 2020 to serve out the remainder of McCain’s term, which ends in 2022.
The Arizona Republic reported that Kyl agreed to serve in the Senate at least through the end of 2018.
“There is no one in Arizona more prepared to represent our state in the U.S. Senate than Jon Kyl,” Ducey said in a statement to the Arizona Republic. “He understands how the Senate functions and will make an immediate and positive impact benefiting all Arizonans. I am deeply grateful to Senator Kyl for agreeing to succeed his friend and college of so many years.”
Thats an agreeable appointment better than a dynasty. Then an election.

I think with an election of his own coming up it would have been political suicide to have appointed either Cindy or Meg.

Thank you Good God that McCain took his last breath near a midterm election!

Would it be unseemly McCain’s a much better Senator now?

Of course not but the pun I thought of defiantly would have been unseemly so I ain’t saying it.

I am confused. Is he staying thru 2020, or leaving at the end of this year? Please explain, thank you.

It’s not clear. The governor would like Jon Kyl to stay through 2020, but has only gotten a promise, so far, that he will stay through 2018.

Let’s see if this is false modesty or he’s not sure if the state’s movers and shakers will back him. Never seen a wolf refuse a big chunk of raw meat unless the feeder’s gonna hit him with a bat if he reaches for it.

SD seems sure he will only stay through 2018, and that it’s a political move. That isn’t what I heard the governor say. Who knows?

I have problems when I hear persons looking at being plopped into one of the 100 most powerful seats in the US, and on the world scene, saying s/he’ll do it but only for (xxxxx) reason and the s/he’ll go. Reminds me of James Brown singing ‘Please, Please’.

Well, at least he will be voting for Kavanaugh.

I just vote for the one who puts on the best conservative song and dance, pray hard and hang on for the ride.

I don’t even do that anymore at least not in the general. I do in the primary, then in the general depending on how bad the guy is or if he’s done been there and proven he’s a liar I vote for the third party unless it’s a total progressive idiot.

Like I said, we’re all just along for the ride.

Most of the time I’m glad that I’m old and my ride won’t last as long. Other times I cry for my grandbabies.

Yeah, you prepare them as best you can but in the end it’s their own ride and they get to steer the bike.

Best you can do is the same families have done since Day One – try and give them the tools to deal with what may come.
