  2. Hello Everyone 🙂

Here is an interesting, and very pretty Saturday Blessing from Lucille:

This is a book cover! There is some great art that used to be on book covers. Hmmm… Think any children are given books of this quality to read in school these days?

In looking for “fadeaway” cats I found this, and for some reason it just makes me laugh. This is “Sunflower” by Tiina 🙂

Have a great day everyone! 😉

Have a friend on FB whose 3rd grade daughter came home with math homework. This is one of the problems:
Greg bought 2 boxes of balloons. He used half to decorate his yard. He used 40 to decorate his porch. He used the rest to decorate the inside of his house. How many balloons did he use inside?
    A.6
    B. 6,000
    C. 60
    D. 600

    • czarina33 says:

My take on it is 600. If he used 1/2 (300) in the yard, 40 on the porch (total is 340 now), that leaves 260 for inside the house. Can’t be 6 or 60. If the answer is 6,000 I hope he had lots of help blowing up the baloons & putting them up! Of course, I failed algebra, so I could be wrong.

    • lovely says:

Am I just missing something? How can you get a number to put into an equation if you don’t know how many balloons Greg put in a) the yard or b) came in a box c) if the boxes contained an equal amount of balloons?

If he used half to decorate the yard are the 40 balloon he used to decorate his porch part of the total number he used for the yard or are the 40 balloons independent of the garden balloons? I am going to ignore the yard/porch dilemma for my own sanity.

      So….

If Greg received 12,080 balloons and he put half in the yard that would mean he put 6,040 balloons in the yard, 40 on the porch leaving 6000 balloons to put in his house.

If Greg received 1,280 balloons and he put half of those balloons in his yard that would mean he put 640 balloons in the yard 40 on the porch leaving 600 in the house.

If Greg received 200 balloons and he put half of those in the yard, that would mean 100 in the yard with the 40 on his porch leaving 60 for the inside of his house.

If Greg received 92 balloons and he put half of those in the yard, that would mean 46 balloons in the yard with the 40 on his porch leaving 6 for the inside of his house.

It seems to me that given there are nothing but variables floating around like a pinball on crack that all the answers can be correct.

Tell the teacher to go jump in a lake.

Thanks Michelle my mind is numb 😜🤔.

I’m waiting for tomorrow for her to tell us what the teacher says is the correct answer. I’m with you, with what little info given, any of the answers could be correct. Way to make 3rd graders hate math though. It’s probably some version of common core.

She’s enrolling her kid in EPIC until she feels more comfortable homeschooling. She didn’t go into details on FB, but it sounds like it didn’t go well. lol

There is one lady on FB who pulled her three children out of public school during the teacher strike.
Her and her husband decided their kids were more important than two incomes. They sold both of their new cars to get out of a payment and bought two older vehicles with cash and no payments. They no longer eat out and have changed other lifestyles to be able to survive on one income.
She says it’s the best thing she’s ever done. They turned half of their utility room into a small classroom to keep school and house separate.
She says that her oldest son, a 6th grader was the most resistant to leaving school. That now though he’s the one enjoying it the most and it has made him more well behaved and he’s now not struggling with math because she came up with a way to make him understand better.
He now tells her how much he loves it and never wants to go back to school because it was like a prison compared to school at home.

My daughter and I made some enemies during the teacher strike. They still come out of the woodwork now and then.

My daughter posted a video one night of my grandson reading one of his favorite books. Someone asked her if he was really reading it or just had it memorized. She told them that some of the words he could read, but mainly he just had the book memorized.

One of these oh so smart teachers and one of these oh so smart teachers’ daughters came out of the woodwork and criticized her for not knowing how to teach her son to read but she thought she could homeschool him, trying to do the job of a teacher and failing.

She told them that is why they would never get their hands on her children.

I laughed at them because kids who are read to usually start with memorizing words before they learn to sound out those words.

My son started learning to read at a few months. No, he could not talk and he did not learn words right then, but he learned that books were good things. He also knew when to say certain words as he got older and followed along. We read a book about kittens, and at one point I would turn the page and he would yell “Uh,oh,” which were the words on the page. He didn’t recognize the words on the page, but he knew that they said “Uh, oh” at that spot. He is a voracious reader who has married a voracious reader. I have a feeling one or both of his daughters will be voracious readers.

Then after a while the kids go up to their room and then a pile of books they choose, is read to them. Lots of reading at night. 🙂 I really love it.

I will say there are a few good ones, I had some privately tell me how they didn’t agree with them. They’re like some parents though and feel trapped in the world they’re in.
Then there were those who publicly came out against them. The sad thing is most of them either retired early from teaching or left teaching all together.
Like all leftists, it was a mob mentality with those who didn’t agree with them, especially fellow teachers who didn’t agree.
They sounded much like these protesters in the hearing the past two days, except there were way more of them disrespecting our State Capitol.

So, that “teacher” doesn’t realize the positive aspects of a child memorizing a story. She doesn’t realize that they sometimes learn to recognize the words. Now, I am not a proponent of teaching reading by sight words. But, sometimes you can’t help when a child learns things on his own. That is actually a good thing. Sometimes I have trouble making my point, but I hope this does.
