      My father was raised in a barn. His father bought the land with the barn on it and was going to build a house. Then the Depression happened. He borrowed some money I think it was about $600 or so, from someone who was rich and fixed up the barn to live in.

        Make sure you get varieties that’ll be happy with your zone, they gets all fussy with them chill hours. A bit warm this winter and only my La Feliciana and Sam Houston varieties fruited, gets any more warmer in the winters and I’ll have to add Florida varieties.

          May I suggest buying your fruit trees from a reputable seller…reputable DOES NOT include big box ‘we sell it all’ stores or those big ‘home construction supply’ stores. They sell whatever their suppliers send them and you can’t be sure the trees have been grafted onto appropriate rootstock, treated correctly while awaiting sales or are even the variety depicted on the tag attached to the plant.
          I know a few people (OK, me too) who’ve bought trees at the big box stores and have been surprised and disappointed. They give you a guarantee but usually ny the time you need it you’ve already invested a year or more and there’s no guarantee they’ll have the variety you want when you go back. There are more than a few really good and reputable dealers online and you’ll pay a bit more but then they’re professionals, want your business and you’re making a long term investment.

            I have a local nursery that guarantees their trees and bushes. I have returned a dead bush, gotten a refund and replaced it. You are correct about big box stores, though.

              Always good to have a local nursery you can trust. I have a few online ones I’ve used over the years that have been great, even replaced trees. Locally we have nada in the ‘what I need/want’ category.

            I’ve had a few disapointments, but I bought a pot-bound white crepe myrtle from Walmart 5 years ago. The bloody thing is 50 feet tall, full of huge blooms, and everyone that sees it says “WOW”.

            Park seed is a good company for veg and herb seeds. The best bet is to find a local nursery that starts good plants and trees.

              I was at Home Depot and saw a rack with a 50% off sign on it. There was a small pot with a stick about 6″ tall that had a teeny tiny purple flower with a little white ring on it. I felt sorry for it and paid the 50 cents and took it home. It grows to about 10 feet, is all over my small patio, and has to be trimmed back two or three times a year, but it sure has pretty flowers on it.

            Theres a small nursery and very large nurseries around. A lot of them. We still have large farming in socal: avocados, grapefruit, hay, alfalfa and more I dont know about. Ill start asking around. Maybe ill find someone who starts them for fun and get something special. 😁

              There are sites where you can plug your zip code into (http://planthardiness.ars.usda.gov/PHZMWeb/) and find your zone. Look at online sources like Willis Nursery, Stark Brothers Nursery for zone-specific types. If you’re in CA there may be problems shipping in but at least you’ll have an idea of what you would like.
              Nothing quite as good as fresh fruit ripened on your own tree.

      Went to our favorite local farm stand (little old man who is a Trump supporter and is no fan of liberal morons) anyhow I was gonna make roasted red peppers with garlic and lemon. He had no red peppers! he said a gentleman was by in the morning and bought every single one 😦 !!!

        I can see that. His are most definitely vine-ripened while the ones in the store are usually ripened off the vine. Quite a different taste.
        Heat nailed me this year, really hit the peppers hard, sun scalded or stunted them.

          This is the first year in my memory, and I can remember when I was young enough to be in the seated part of a shopping cart, that my mom has no tomatoes from her garden.

          The chipmunks, groundhogs, whatever wild life got what the heat didn’t get, it is really weird.

          There is no comparison between the old man’s peppers and store bought peppers.

          Even our farmers’s market is a bit slim this year, if you want red peppers you better get there early. Tomatoes, potatoes, cucumbers, radishes, green peppers bean of all sorts (which I don’t eat) are abundant, flowers, ground tomatoes and other things I’m too tired to think of right now.

            Yeah, heat was wicked here. When it hits 90 the tomato family doesn’t like it much and those tomatoes that are made for the hot weather are not that good.
            I’m already looking at next spring, too late to be complaining about this year.

              Our farmers market runs until October or the last week in September, there are quite a few folks who have greenhouse and so we are generally good until then. Prices on tomatoes finally are coming down as enough farmers have them now. Red Peppers? Glorious ones for anywhere between 75 cents and a dollar 🙂 .

                We have one in the ‘big’ city – never fails to surprise me that folks inthe ‘big city’ go gaga over fresh veggies grown jes outside the city limits. It runs pretty solidly year-round, lotta arts/crafts stuff but someone’s always got something they’re growing/selling.

                  Our farmer’s market is legit local grown, we have a Farmer’s market Czar who actually goes to farms if there is any question that the food is locally grown.

                  He made a bog scene last year or the year before inciting a Hmong family didn’t grow tomatoes as it was too early in the season for them to be bringing so many ripe ones, as it turned out they actually had a greenhouse.

                  We have some crafters, a woman who brings her spinning wheel and makes yarn from different materials and then sells different items that she knits, I bought a scarf and love it. We have maybe 2 oriental Trading type toy crap (I wish they were not allowed to be there) we also have a metal worker, knife sharpener, cheese makers, fresh meat (don’t get me going on this subjects and the small town moms who think that they know more about farming than 3rd generation farmers 🙄), we have a basket weaver and a group of special needs adults who sell little things they make.

                  Oh and we have the crystal, patchouli, the dye peace nick that would probably feel justified in killing me as I am a President Trump supporter.

                    You gotta winnow thru – we had ‘farm produce’ trucks in NOLA that would park in hi traffic or hi income areas advertising ‘farm fresh produce’. I had one I had to roust by a place I was doing a derail and as he closed up to move I saw case after case of produce from a known wholesaler.

                    Yeah, there are markets here like that in Milwaukee. Waukesha is sort of a Harley town, we aren’t all that interested in a conversation if you’re an assh*le, plus out little farmer’s market dictator is pretty ruthless. Last year there was a fellow selling corn on the cob he clean the corn right off of two cobs put it into a bowl and there was fresh real butter and salt that you could put on yourself. He is not there this year. My body probably thanks him but my tastebuds think it is a bunch of baloney.

                    I’ll betcha that a lot of suburbanites go home with naked goat-chicken hybrids smiling all the way about staring their farmettes.

                    I’ve never been to a livestock auction, I’ve been a farmers market where they sell some live stock goats being the largest animals that they had.

                    When my cousin and I were young (10ish ?) we were at a farmers market and realized that people weren’t buying the cute chicks and ducklings for pets but for snacks. We pooled our money and bought 20 -25 duckings, boy was my mom happy to see us 😏.

                    Anyhow some went to a sanctuary (Little Red School House in the Chicagoland area), one went to a friend who kept it as a pet. the last few disappeared while I was at school, my mom insists they went to good homes 🙃.

                    Livestock auctions are the hard ones as the frequently have alotta calves. The dairy farms breed the cows to get them into milk then sell the calves young. If you have broody cows in milk or have the wherewithal to coddle and hand-feed the calves for a few weeks most will survive but if you don’t…

    Stella and Stellars…for the next few days and maybe longer I’m having to take a break from posting here and elsewhere. Eye strain is the culprit. I’m on the Internet usually 14 hours a day and that just isn’t acceptable to my doc. I’ll be bored out of my skull, but such is life.

    The convictions of Paul Manafort and Michael Cohen are it. Trump’s gonna go.

    Not so fast.

    The Manafort conviction doesn’t even tangentially involve Trump or the Trump campaign in any wrongdoing. Manafort was prosecuted because he made the wrong life decision to affiliate with the Trump campaign to help manage the anticipated convention floor flight. But for that decision, Manafort never would have been targeted by prosecutors on charges previously ignored by federal investigators. That Manafort was prosecuted because he knew Trump does not implicate Trump in the wrongdoing.

    The Michael Cohen plea deal is potentially more problematic. Cohen said he made the payments to buy the silence of two women with the knowledge and at the direction of a federal candidate (Trump). That contradicts Cohen prior versions. But assuming it’s provable, it’s not clear that the payments were illegal. The issue is whether they constituted unreported campaign contributions, which is not a slam dunk for prosecutors. In the plea deal the issue was not litigated – Cohen agreed to it because the prosecution had him on more serious tax and fraud charges, so adding in the campaign finance issues was at no cost to Cohen…

    The reason none of this will hurt Trump is that it’s all baked into the cake.

    There isn’t much about Trump’s personality or conduct that wasn’t exposed prior to the 2016 election, including alleged Russian collusion.

    People who hated Trump before still hate him. People who loved Trump before, still love him. People who care most about the economy still care most about the economy.

    People who viewed the 2016 election as the Flight 93 Election also view the 2018 and 2020 elections as Flight 93 elections (and they are).

    It’s August 21. This will not be a big election issue.

    Good morning, Stellar friends. I’ve been MIA around here the past few days and just starting to catch up. DH has been running for a seat in the Alaska House of Representatives, and campaigning has been a 24/7 occupation, especially this past week. Primary election day was yesterday, and we went into it feeling quite confident that we had it in the bag. Expected a 70% victory. His opponent mounted no visible campaign, other than a spiffy-looking website and Facebook page. No signs, no showing up at events, no active efforts that anyone could see.

    We spent most of yesterday standing on the major street corner in Kenai holding signs and waving to people. Exhausting after a couple of hours. Lots of honks and waves and thumbs-up from folks driving by. About 8:30 last night we went to the Republican Election Watch party at a local car dealership to await returns coming in. Excruciatingly slow. Right from the start, his opponent was ahead. What?? How could that be? Every update kept him about 100 votes ahead. Unbelievable. Finally, at 11 pm, there was 1 precinct left to report (out of 11 precincts) and we were down by 96 votes. Doom and gloom over the crowd, as our candidate for State Senate, Peter Micciche, was also down to his opponent.

    The last update came through, and a miracle occurred! With 100% of precincts reporting, we were ahead by 3 VOTES. Yes, 3. The whole room whooped, and gloom lifted. Peter was still down by 13 votes, but much better than the previous difference of about 100.

    It isn’t over, as absentee votes have to be counted. That will likely take another week. My hope is that absentee voters are more informed and motivated, and will only increase our lead. But holy cow, three votes. It might be the slimmest margin in history.

    This morning the updated website shows us still ahead by 3 votes with some absentees and early votes counted, and shows Peter ahead by 5 votes. Both campaigns are stunned by this outcome. We truly thought both men would win much more easily than this. Praying the miracle holds…

    NINETY SECOND WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY–On Tuesday, August 22, 1995, exactly 23 years ago, when I was 44, eleven months after I had filed a Petition to dissolve my prior marriage, Matt’s mom called me and told me that I needed to pick up Matt, our then twelve year old son, at her apartment building at 555 S. Barrington in Brentwood.

    I drove immediately from my office in Bel Air to the apartment building in Brentwood, entered the lobby, and waited for Matt to arrive. In the large and elegant lobby I noticed a beautiful young woman speaking with the concierge. Matt and I left the lobby together, but before we climbed into my SUV, Matt told me he had left a book in his mom’s apartment so we returned to the lobby. I realized that I had missed an opportunity to meet the young woman in the lobby, and while Matt returned his mom’s apartment, I went searching for her in the apartment building gym. When I could not find her, I kicked myself (figuratively) for missing this opportunity and returned to the lobby where I met Matt. Just as Matt and I were leaving, I noticed that the young woman had also returned to the lobby, but did not speak with her.

    I drove Matt home (rapidly) and I called the concierge, Ms. Rita Gross, and breathlessly said “Rita, tell me that drop dead gorgeous woman in the lobby was not 25 years old.” Rita replied “Tom actually, she’s 32.” I responded “Rita, I’ve got to meet her” and Rita answered “I did notice that there was a certain tension between the two of you.” Rita also told me that “as beautiful as she is on the outside, she is even more beautiful on the inside” which was Rita’s way of telling me to be nice to this young woman. Rita told me her name, Dr. Sandy Milo (a veterinarian, small animals, cats and dogs) and Sandy authorized Rita to give me her telephone number. This moment was what Sandy and I call “the Glance”, but it could just as easily have been the South Pacific standard “Some Enchanted Evening” sung by Rossano Brazzi.

    Sandy and I had our first date on Friday, August 25, 1995, were engaged thirteen days later on Thursday, September 7, 1995, were married six months later on March 16, 1996, are celebrating today the twenty third anniversary of the Glance in August, have two beautiful children, Jackson, a Stanford junior and Taylor, a Stanford freshman and member of the 2018 Stanford Women’s NCAA National Championship Tennis Team. Since the day of the Glance, we have lived a beautiful and happy life together, a perpetual honeymoon.

    I tell friends and family members that this experience was my Ninety Second Window of Opportunity in life. I explain that there will be random events and circumstances on life’s journey, when a person discovers an opportunity that he or she desperately wants: a job, investment, home, education program, career change, business partner, marriage partner, or the like. My approach to these opportunities is that I throw myself into them with a passion, and even though perhaps eight or nine times out of ten, nothing may materialize, the other one or two times out of ten, they are life changing and transformative.

      My answer was yes, just as I am going to go on not living in fear that a mutant moth is going to eat me.

    Our Heavenly Father, Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.

    Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.

    Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump and Mike Pence and their families as they seek to lead America back to You.

    Grant us patience, Lord, as the evil ones try to anger us and cause us to fall.
    Spread blessings over Israel and Netanyahu.

    We humbly ask that You please comfort those who are grieving and in pain.
    Thank you Father, for Your Love and the gift of Life.
