That’s my old bootlegging town, used to stay with friends in Mentone. We’d ‘leg up on Sand Mou tain and over into Lafayette. Used to be a lot of Friday/Sarurday nite barn and National Guard Armory dances in the area and the area was D-R-Y.

Hey, they entered the modern era on April 22, 2005! Now they even allow liquor sales on Sunday. Nearby Dade County GA residents were happy at that.

Only kind of booze we could sell was ‘Ten High’, it was the only one most recognized and it was inexpensive. We’d buy cases of pints in Chatanooga and truck ’em on down. We’d sell by the bottle or by the shot.
Didn’t happen to stop by the Alabama Fan Club did you? Some years back I’d given them one of my SO badges and I don’t know if it’s still there – I’d heard one of the members had moved it to his private badge collection. June Jam these used to best one of THE best C&W music fests around, to bad the city ‘fathers’ killed it.

We moved into a county in TN. I went to the nearby gas station to get a bottle of wine and a 6 pack of beer. I found the beer in the cooler, but no wine. I went up to the counter and asked where the wine was and was told they don’t sell it because it is a “dry” county. So I held up the beer and asked what it was. He said it is a malt beverage. Obviously the council was a bunch of beer drinkers. 🙄

Yeah, our county was dry but it’s about 14 miles west to a Louisiana store that’s full-service (my Maison d’ Chevron) and about 40 south on 59 to another one. As both stores have a goodly win/beer/booze supply/selection and many folks round here think nothing of a good drive both stores rake in the cash hand over fist. Folks that go into Slidell for stuff they just can’t get here will stop at the ‘Last Chance’, as we call it, and load up. Oh yeah, lottery/Mega Millions/Powerball tickets too. All the sin you need in one stop.

Nope, I’ve never been to the fan club. We took a drive out some back roads from Trenton, GA to Ft. Payne and them drove back to Chattanooga for evening mass. A nice day in the country.
Back when I sold Marvin Windows I used to handle some service work for Jeff Cook’s house, but I never dealt with him, of course.

…to Rome. Used to be a great truck stop on the way, 18-wheelers liked to use it to…avoid…and it served the best greasy truck stop food. Burned down some time back – always wondered if the grease reached critical mess and spontaneously exploded.
We live just off of 11 too, it’s our way into town – more than a few miles south of you though.

I was raised with Johnny Cash and June Carter and the Carter family. My mama loved their music and their tv show so much it was like they lived in the house with us. That old stereo, probably her most prized possesion, played him more than any of the other wonderful albums. Although she did heavily favor his secular music.

Kiddo still loves Thomas. There is a Thomas train and a Percy train that travel around to train museums for Thomas rides and an entire festival surrounding the characters. We went 2 times. It was fun.

My son loved the miniature trains and Thomas. When he was around 2 we took him to a full sized train museum. A big black engine came along a track and my son took off in the opposite direction screaming at the top of his lungs, “It’s gonna get me.” He was completely hysterical. It took me a long time to convince him that the train couldn’t leave the track. He finally let us take a ride on the train.

Had a similar experience with dinosaurs, which my younger grandson loved. We went apple picking, and they had a mechanical dino at the apple farm. When it started moving and making noise, he was terrified!

My oldest son never watched television as a little child. He was incredibly hyperactive and just would not sit still to watch it. Consequently, he knew nothing about the favorite childhood characters from cartoons and kid shows.
When he was about 3 we took him and his cousin to six flags. She loved all the people walking around the place in the big character costumes and would run to them for hugs. He screamed every time he saw one because he had no idea what they were.

It took a lot of courage, but I just attended my first Catholic Mass, ever. The most beautiful thing I’ve ever experienced. Thank you, Menagerie.

I just came here to tell you I’m praying all day for you Wooly. I love you. And your words about the mass are truth. Inexplicable beauty, offered continually, day and night across the whole world, one uninterrupted worship, sacrifice and celebration for two thousand years.
I will be praying every day for you, remembering to offer up for you my works an drew joys.
You can do this. We will all be joyfully waiting to hear from you again.

I was pretty scared when I got on my bike. I prayed for courage and rode over there, locked my bike to the fence, and greeted the first guy I saw coming out of St. Basil’s with good mornings, and told him I was pretty scared to even walk in the building. I’ve not been to church in two decades. He patted me on the back and said, “Let’s go in.”, then introduced me to the deacon and the priest.
During the service, I heard only about half, probably the half I needed to hear, of the sermon and readings, because I sat at the very back. Next to the nursery, with yelling babies behind me. 🙂 I didn’t understand any of the ritual, hardly, a couple of people looked at me funny when I refused the Eucharist — I said quietly to one woman in my row, “I’m not Catholic, so I’m not allowed. But I will be.” She nodded and I let her by.
Again, Menagerie. It’s your doing that I went, and it’s all of your doing that I’m going to be gone for a week at detox.
I figured, if I’m going to give myself to the State for six days, I had better muster the courage to go to Church.
Next week I’ll be clean, and sitting closer to the altar. So I can hear. 🙂

Wooly, this is important. If you choose to become Catholic It’s because of God, and the prompting of the Holy Spirit. And honestly, likely mostly in spite of me, because I am not really good at saying the best things.
I would be really uncomfortable, after all my years in the Catholic Church, going somewhere else, and I wouldn’t know what to do either. That being said, it sounds like you know the really only rule there is. If you are not Catholic you don’t take communion.
We do a lot of standing and kneeling, and the why’s are lovely reasons but not something to get into now. Do either as you are comfortable, it’s not required of anyone, especially visitors, but of course, for Catholics, is a sign of reverence.
Each parish is different, and some adopt customs that vary a little from each other. In most Catholic churches people are very silent in the sanctuary, much more so than Protestant churches. This is beacause Jesus is present in the Eucharist. Look to the front of the church, find the red lamp with burning candle. That is where the Tabernacle is located and that is what we genuflect to, not the crucifix. Anyhow, most parishes try to have a very solemn and respectful presence before our Lord.
There is a nearby church I love, geographically the parish I should go to. Very smal, almost no vestibule, and they talk continuously before mass. I don’t like that, but I love the parish and people.
What’s important is that 99 percent of the people you encounter will be so glad to see you, will answer any questions, or help you in any way.
Most parishes start their RCIA programs for those interested in learning about Catholicism in September, a good time to come. If their class meets at a time you can’t make, ask how you can learn more. Someone will try to meet with you one on one if at all possible, but it’s much better to be in that group. It’s an awesome experience every year.

One of the many wonderful things about God the Father…we can be frank with Him since He already knows all about us and what’s happening in our lives anyway.
We can ask Him to guide us away from our fear into a place where we have confidence He’s going to stay with us no matter what is bothering us…even when that bothersome thing doesn’t get solved according to the time table we think is right. It’s sort of like…OK, God, I can’t see either the point of this trial or why it’s taking so long to resolve…help me to trust You no matter what and give me peace.

Wooly you might enjoy Scott Hahn’s Rome Sweet Home, it is the story of a Presbyterian minister who discovered the beauty of the Catholic Mass. His telling of the first Mass he attended is beautiful, he was gobsmacked how the liturgy was based in the bible.

Bless you, Wooly! And bless Menagerie for helping and encouraging you. As she says, the mass is the most beautiful ritual in the world. And the more you know about the liturgy and the meaning behind it, the more beautiful it becomes. I was 64 years old when I joined the Catholic Church, and I only regret that I waited so long. And Menagerie had a lot to do with getting me there. Stay strong. Work hard on your sobriety. Offer yourself and your pain to God. Only He can fill that hole in your heart.

I weighed the flour, but about 3 cups. The yeast should be 1-1/2 tsp and the salt 1 tsp. Water is a bit over
31 cup.Oven temps in Fahrenheit are 450 for the first 10 minutes, then reduce to 400.
You may know this, but I looked it up.

Once it cools down i start makes variations of banana bread and cookies. Going to try making my grandmothers pound cake. She was always very strict about never doubling a batch too. Maybe make a trifle.

I love lemon curd. I have made my own, but I have a jar (don’t know the brand) in the pantry. It’s great as a filling for a lemon, yellow, or white cake.

Nothing compares to riding the el or a Chicago bus after a Cub’s victory 🙂 ! Sheer madness. I used to go downtown (bus and el) all the time when I was young, my one friend and I would skip school and spend the day at the Water Tower Place,the beach and various eateries. We’d also always make a point to visit the Picasso and would chat about the world in its shadow.

Kiddo is very excited. We just finished the full Brainquest kindergarten book. This book was great as a daily supplement and getting ahead.
Theres a little certificate at the end and lots of stickers as rewards. We will start on the full 1st grade book in a couple days. I think they go through 8th grade.
