Heber Valley Railroad

I have not visited this railroad, located in Utah, but here is their website, if you are interested:

https://hebervalleyrr.org/

It seems that their steam trains are currently out of service, so their trains are pulled by diesel. Here’s a video:

Oh wait a minute – all that that means is the weekend of working with hubby rather than by myself – which is a good thing – and safer!

Today’s drafthorse is the Percheron 🙂
Here is a lithograph of a beautiful dappled gray percheron horse – 1898 by Otto Eerelman (1839 – 1926), a Dutch painter; best known for his depictions of dogs and horses.

It’s nice to see most horses have retained healthy proportions, and not been bred into unhealthy shapes as some dogs have been.

Here is Three Dappled Percherons Abreast by Rick Clubb

and here is our cutie! – a “little” gray percheron foal 🙂

Doesn’t he look like the representations of the Trojan horse!

Hey y’all. I finally made it off the Thursday thread, now that it’s halfway through the day.

Cleaning out the closet. I should take my husband’s advice and throw everything away without looking in the various boxes and bags that have been there for years. But I can’t. So, it’s slow going, but I am still getting rid of 98% of the crap. A few years ago I could never have thrown and given so much away.

I like this new me. It’s pretty cool. Now if I could just throw the mental baggage and worries out too!

About 8 years after my father died my mother decided to move out of the 4 bedroom house. She said she would start every morning and sort out some things, put some back, then take the ones she could part with to the Goodwill store. Next morning she would start again. Sometimes she could let go of something she previously thought she should keep. Eventually emptied out and moved into a large studio apartment.

My extra room got all cluttered up in the last 3 years. I injured my knee getting things down out of the closet back then and haven’t been able to work in there for years. Well, my knee finally healed and it was my get-up-and-go that wouldn’t work. Finally my dear friend “nagged” me into doing it. She came over and supervised. I can’t believe the difference it made having her help. Not finished, but well on my way. At least I won’t qualify for being on Hoarders. 🙄

You worry for a while but when its done its done. Ive been organzing photos and what negatives ive got. Only the step 1 of getting everything into grouped archival boxes.
And think of all the closet space youll have! You could put a metal shelf unit in there to get stuff out of the way in other spots too.

Holy fire grew as expected with the monsoonal weather. Storm off baja playing with winds and heat. Plus fire creating tornadoes. Right up to houses within the city of lake elsinore in riverside county but not burning in orange county anymore. Firefighters cannot get a handle on it bc its very steep cliff/mountain side area.

#HolyFire morning update: 18,137 acres and 5% contained. For those wondering about containment, the hand/containment line grows as the fire grows. We continue to actively engage, but cannot get ahead of the fire.

Holy Fire expands to more than 18,000 acres

    • Where we lived when I was young there was a huge, beautiful Elm tree – must have been 100 feet tall and very old that was lost to dutch elm disease. I cried watching it being taken down. Elms have such a lovely, graceful shape. I think the Univ of NH has developed a ded resistant elm that they now sell, & may actually warranty against ded. Nearby to the elm was a huge old maple that died. When cut my brother counted about 350 rings! There are some old growth trees “hidden” all over, and some towns designate them so they can not be cut down unless diseased.

Understandable that diseased trees needed to be cut down. What I hate is perfectly healthy trees being cut down because they “spoil the view” or simply because the leaves or needles make a mess.

When I lived in Los Angeles, our landlady (a very odd woman) decided she didn’t like the trees in our backyard because she had to pay her gardener too much to maintain them and keep the yard clean. So she had them cut down and then decided to take everything out of the backyard, promising to put in new grass and plants…which she never did.

The result was that the backyard was unbearably hot and nothing shaded the house, thus making it the same inside. Before that we didn’t need air conditioning, but just kept the windows open and a floor fan on during the summer.

I am passing this on to you because it is definitely working for me. I think I have found inner peace. I read an article that said the way to achieve inner peace is to finish things I had started. Today I finished a bag of potato chips, a cherry pie, a fifth of Jack Daniels, a small box of chocolate candy and slapped the hell out of two people I don’t like.

I feel better already. Pass this along to others who need inner peace.

Sorry folks, that’s what happens when you prowl around your closet, you find goofy papers tucked in books. 😀

OMG LOL That is my problem. I never finish anything. I cleaned out my closet…………the clothes are stacked on my cedar chest to be folded to take to a thrift store (has been for weeks). I bought a shelf and drawer unit to use in my bathroom cabinet under the sink………….the junk is all out on the floor now (it has only been 2 days…….I am proud of that…only two days). I have papers to sort in my LR………..(okay, I don’t know how many months it has been). I have actually done a lot, but never seem to get it all finished.Oh, the one thing I did finish was getting rid of all the unnecessary paperwork from my divorce. It has been 8 years. I don’t think I need it any more.

Amazing when you have everything…a terrific job, the ear of the President of the United States, are good looking, possess fine speaking abilities, have the respect of many in your community, can organize well, found a new husband, maintain a great lifestyle…and you throw it all away by being overbearing to the point you lose your job and are rejected by a man who gave you every chance to make good. Then your next step is to take revenge. Oy, what a mess-up.

State Historic Landmark, the Moreton Bay Fig Tree (ficus macrophylla) in Santa Barbara, CA is the largest of its kind in the nation…170 foot span, providing 21,000 square feet of shade. It was planted on July 4, 1876 and then relocated to it’s current location in 1877.

      P. S. I’ve walked by there many times. Santa Barbara was my favorite vacation destination in the 70s and 80s when the motels were cheap and the crowds were thin. It’s a very pretty city and very walkable. A couple of my friends retired there and love it.

‘Secret’ DMV office serves California lawmakers, Capitol staffers

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/secret-dmv-office-serves-california-lawmakers-capitol-staffers/ar-BBLLanM

In California, long lines are a fact of life at Department of Motor Vehicles offices across the state, but for California lawmakers and their legislative staffers, there’s an alternative.
Hearst’s Sacramento television station, KCRA, has learned of a DMV office that is not open to the public.

It’s located inside the Legislative Office Building on N Street, adjacent to the state Capitol.

The office, inside Room 121, has no markings on the door and was locked when KCRA visited it on Thursday, but after knocking, a worker confirmed it was a DMV office and said it’s set up to handle customer complaints that escalate to the legislative branch.

However, having a private office for legislators and their Capitol staff is a source of frustration for Assemblyman Jim Patterson, R-Fresno. His request for an official DMV audit was denied when three Democrats — Senators Ricardo Lara, of Los Angeles; Ben Allen, of Santa Monica; and Jim Beall, of San Jose — abstained from voting.

“I’ve been here six years and I’m not surprised that legislators have given themselves special privileges and perks that typical Californians just don’t get,” Patterson said.

It certainly seems like the people were being treated unfairly. It’s hard to know the truth of what was happening, though. I didn’t look for any follow-up vids or stories. Did you notice any? I do find it strange that a group of lawyers did not take on this case pro bono. It would have been a huge story.

One word of caution…Mike Antonovich was one of the few elected Republicans in Los Angeles County. He retired in 2016 and was replaced by one of his staff members. Outside of the CA Assembly, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors is likely the most powerful governmental entity in the entire state.

LA WEEKLY is a far leftist newspaper and is pretty much a muckraking rag. Not saying this story didn’t deserve to be told. But their telling it sets off alarm bells.

As you can see, that area is desert. Although it looked like one of the homes was next to a water supply and another did have a well, I can’t see how water would be anywhere near sufficient enough to do much developing out there. And a potential airport would need a LOT of water.

Los Angeles uses up a humongous amount of water from the Colorado River and from northern California aqueducts flowing down to the south. That is all contracted for already and Arizona is clamoring for more water from the river, too. How developers in the desert could get away with taking water from the city of L.A. is beyond me.

As a general rule, if any CA county is planning to heavily redevelop anywhere within their boundaries, they have to create and distribute an environmental impact report so the public can comment on it. Unless the L.A. County Board of Supervisors lie about it, the impact would be severe on the desert area.

I can’t emphasize enough how much the leftists in CA despise Mike Antonovich. He’s been enemy #1 since forever. Any charge against him needs to be thoroughly investigated by an unbiased observer, which LA WEEKLY is not.

The only other thing would be the environmentalists not wanting humans to live out there. Think of the ridiculous things they have caused to happen in the last 30 years.

The county kept saying they weren’t in compliance. They live out in the middle of nowhere. They own their land. So, my question is, in compliance to whom? Or to what? It’s not like they live in a highly populated neighborhood with code enforcement rules known to all. They keep changing the rules.

I do think this is a land grab effort. I realize the water problems they would have if they developed it, but that has never stopped them before. They want the land.
