Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge RR

(All information from the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge RR)

This historic train has been in continuous operation between Durango and Silverton since 1882, carrying passengers behind vintage steam locomotives and rolling stock indigenous to the line. The D&SNGRR travels 45.4 miles each way along the Animas River from Durango to Silverton during the summer season, May through October.

The line was constructed to haul silver & gold ore from Southwest Colorado’s San Juan Mountains, but passengers soon realized it was the view that was truly precious.

The D&SNGRR sustained severe track damage between Hermosa and Rockwood as a result of a severe thunderstorm which swept through the Four Corners area on Tuesday, July 24.

The railroad’s maintenance of way (MOW) team, in collaboration with several engineering consulting firms and specialized contractors retained by the company, is currently assessing the extent of the extensive damage, and the time, materials, and resources required to repair it. Because the aforementioned section of track cannot be used at this time, the D&SNGRR will resume passenger service with slightly modified daily excursions to the mining town of Silverton.

There will be two daily train excursions to Silverton beginning Sat. July 28.  Guests will be transported from the Durango depot via Highway 550 past the damaged section of track to the railroad’s Rockwood station just north of Durango where they will board the train.  The train will depart from Rockwood to Silverton and then return to Rockwood and Durango in the same manner.  This modified trip includes the iconic Horseshoe Curve, High Bridge and all of the Animas River gorge including the spectacular views from the High Line.  These amended trips will remain in place through at least Wednesday, August 15, while the track repairs are ongoing and other erosion prevention structures are installed.

        Yes, indeedy! I would love one of these examples shown…or I’d even take Amtrack as long as it was to the Pacific along one of those pretty Washington or Oregon beaches. LOL!

      I’ve taken the trip from NO to Chicago & back on the City of New Orleans, and across from NO to Atlanta then up to Philadelphia & back in a roomette. Perfectly good way to train travel, altho you have to share a bathroom with the rest of your car. The two beds pull out & the porter makes them up for you. Meals are included. I would like to take the trip across Canada one day.

        I had a roomette to myself on the way back from Portland OR (via Seattle) to Chicago. The shower is a real treat! Amtrak bathrooms are nothing to write home about either. Anyway, you have some privacy in the roomette, and your meals are included.

        The only thing was that we hit some really rough track at night (I think it was in North Dakota), and I was thrown around so much in my bunk that I dreamed that I was being beaten. It woke me up!

    Morning all 🙂

    So I have picked probably the hottest days of the year to do some painting in the house it’s 95 degrees+, and in this heat you just can’t stop painting easily because it dries too fast.

    Draft horses were the “iron horses” that pulled huge wagons of goods before trains. Here is a painting of the well-known Clydesdale pulling a wagon “Bringing home the tree” – John Sloane

    Clydesdales come in different colors, not just the color of the Budweiser horses. Even though these animals may weigh up to 2,000 lbs and be 6 feet at the shoulder, even a child can ride one:

    Yeah – I’m sick of the heat, so I’m dreaming of snow!

    Here is a clydesdale colt with his person to get an idea of the colts size and cuteness factor!

      On the road from Brigham City to Logan, Utah you pass horse farms which raise clydesdales, percherons, Belgians & bays… all the large work horses from Europe. You can take a hayride or sleigh ride.

        I was watching a program about Victorian and Edwardian-era farming in England, and they have what they call “Shire” horses that are used for heavy farm work. Big, beautiful beasts.

      I drool over draft horses but if I got one it would well outlive me and none of the juniors have any interest in country stuff. Like that kid found out – draft horses make good riders but don’t break any speed records. Even a few stores that specialize in saddles and tack for them.

        My husband and I are in a little contentious debate about horses. One granddaughter takes riding lessons. My husband wants to buy her a horse, pay for boarding and feed.

        This will be over my stringent objections. I want to spend what resourced we have on us, not a horse.

          In researching paintings and breeds for this series, many of the “funny” cartoons about horses were about how $$$ EXPENSIVE $$$ they are, even without any injuries or illnesses.
          There are many great rescue horses out there to adopt, and even if I had millions of dollars, I would still adopt horses to save them.
          Some of the draft breeds are no longer needed for pulling wagons, so they are raised for meat :-{ and I have read some of our wild mustangs have also been sold to other countries, that – oh by the way – sell them for meat :-{

            When it comes to the granddaughter the man has no sense at all. Yes on renting the horse, what’s wrong with that? The kid might be off to some other pursuit in a few months. And he builds tug boats and says he has enough of the water, so no boats, which is fine with me.

              I was (apparently not clearly) hinting that an old boat would cost less to maintain than a new horse. Then there’s the issue of how many hours will the GD be riding the horse versus the full time costs associated with maintaining it. There are always horses for sale in the local papers around here – folks discover how expensive they are to maintain and how, if they aren’t ridden regularly, you’re gonna have to rebreak them again.

    The separation of 1700 votes, or less than one percent, highlights the recent attempt by Democratic activists to fight efforts to prevent voter fraud from occurring.

    For the past four years, George Soros has spent millions of dollars trying to weaken Ohio’s election security by funding efforts to both block its implementation of Voter ID and prevent the state from removing inaccurate registrations.

    Soros pledged $5 million to fund Clinton campaign attorney Marc Elias’s efforts to fight voter ID laws in Ohio and two other states ahead of the 2016 election. Elias would file that suit in Ohio on behalf of several groups, including the Ohio Organizing Collaborative, that would have an employee sentenced to prison for voter fraud.

    In 2016, liberal activist groups Demos and the ACLU filed suit against the state of Ohio in an attempt to stop its efforts to remove inaccurate voter registrations from its rolls. Soros gave 1.25 million to Demos in 2016, on top of the more than $3 million he had given in previous years. And Soros has been even more generous with the ACLU, giving over $35 million for Trump related lawsuits.

    Ultimately, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Ohio’s efforts in a 5-4 decision earlier this year.

    But even with voter ID and cleansed voter rolls, there are still problems with Ohio elections.

    Consider that 170 registered voters listed as being over 116 years old still existed on the rolls of Ohio’s 12th Congressional when GAI accessed the data last August. That’s 10 percent of Balderson’s current margin of victory, pending provisional ballots. And 72 voters over the age of 116 who “live” in Balderson’s district cast ballots in the 2016 election.

    But the Left hasn’t given up trying to create conditions favorable for voter fraud in Ohio. As former Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell has pointed out, “hyper-partisan liberals…have their eyes on Ohio.” Electing a Democrat as the state’s top elections official would undoubtedly roll back the hard-won safeguards Ohio has implemented. And as Blackwell points out, as goes Ohio, so goes the Presidency.

    All that think smoke wasnt for nothing. The Holy fire is creating a weather system like the other ones seem to. The monsoonal weather we have been getting the past 2 or 3 years is contributing. Its 9600+ acres now. Schools shut down until further notice for 2 districts and mandatory evacuations. Still over 100 degrees during the day. Im glad I dont have to drive near the area.

        That’s not true! For a couple years afte Katrina a local man (who used to work as a roadie for a rock star) got the contract to pick up the trash & clean the Quarter’s streets. The work was amazing, and they sprayed a lemon scent after, which, while unexpected in the Quarter, was nice. Unfortunately, he lost interest & the contract went back to one of the companies which leave it smelly. Czar says any city the French have occupied is like this.

          Ya know, I knew the Director wouyld probably take my postb too literally – just commenting on the ongoing problems inherent to an open-air sewer with seafood/shellfish remains fermenting in dumpsters in humidy August weather. I’d mentioned before that Sid Torres had done a hero’s job in cleaning the Quarter but didn’t think his work (spurned by the previous administration-they were too busy removing statues) needed mentioning again, it’s history.

            My only memory of NOLA was following a dump truck full of rotting chicken through there on a 100* day. Not good. We couldn’t see the truck most of the way, but we got routed off the freeway down to a stoplight. The truck was in front of us, and the driver was standing at the back of it pulling the rotting chicken that was oozing out and throwing it back up into the truck. 😯

      Differences from today: newer cars, no one wearing dresses, fancy hats or suits. More t-shirt shops, & tourist junk stores. Probably smelled like old beer, urine and good food cooking; no difference. Likely the same number of churches, strip clubs and bars.

    I’m going into a detox on Monday at 10:00 AM.

    On Tuesday, I loaned my best raincoat (okay, my only raincoat, but I love it), to a 16 year old girl who had to ride two miles home in the rain. Her mom, coming to pick her up the next day, thanked me, and I said, “Ma’am that is what I do. I didn’t need my raincoat that night. She did. I knew she’d bring it back the next day.” She did.

    On Wednesday, this teenager came and knocked on my window, just to give me consolation and advice, and we spent 45 minutes talking on my fire escape. The girl is wise beyond her years, but not beyond her upbringing.

    Later that day, my friend from south Texas came up and knocked on my window, and we spent a few hours together, walking and talking. He’s a tall, handsome black dude, and the kindest person you’ll meet.

    Later that night, I was buying shots at the local liquor store/deli, and met a woman who was visiting from Cincinnati with her hubby and family, and she was talking with my friend (with whom I have worked) behind the counter about how she didn’t know this town, and wanted to know where all the National Blueberry Festival spots were. We’re both on bikes, so I said, lets go for a ride. My lady friend said, “Trust him. He’s good.” So, off we go, and while talking, my alcoholism comes up in conversation, because I’m honest like that. I give the lady a small tour of town, and she stops me and asks if she can pray for me, and does, right in front of my former restaurant, and invites me to the local diocese the next morning for a daily mass. She prayed courage for me. I didn’t attend.

    But I met three angels in one day. I cannot ignore that. So I’m going into a detox on Monday.

    I should be out by Friday, and free of alcohol.

    I met another three angels today, but that’s another story.

      I’ll be praying for you Woolly. Now use the blessings God gives you for discernment. For years I have seen you reply to every suggestion about help with reasons why it’s not for you.

      You are probably going to need some support afterwards. I don’t know what manner that might come in, but I do know with absolute certainty that it won’t be perfect. The people who offer that help might read a different Bible than the one you like. The might sell books.

      In other words, they won’t be perfect, and you won’t ever find anyone who is.

      You are excellent at reaching out and helping those who are not perfect and loving them despite, perhaps because, of their imperfections.

      You suck at TAKING help from them if you need it. I referenced discernment because I believe with all my heart, which loves you, my friend, that you need to exercise it.

      If God waited for perfect men to launch his church it would never have gotten off the ground. Wherever you go in your life after Friday, do not make it passing the good road looking for the perfect road.

      You have my love and prayers. And perhaps your situation has just jolted me out of a bad one, so you also have my timely gratitude.

        Thank you, Menagerie. Everything you said here is true. For years, you have been guiding me, and I’ve been ignoring it. *(mostly) I go in to detox at 10 on Monday. I need the courage and humility to walk into St. Basil’s on Sunday morning. Because I think that’s where I need to be.

          Wooly, my beloved, fault filled Church is in crisis. I agree, you need to be there. But something just as important. We need you there. Each soul has a perfect slot to fill, and when they don’t fill it up, no one else can take up that slack.

          So many prayers of hope and thanksgiving are being said for you, because we your friends know you can do this. God has, from the very beginning moments of time, had just the help and strength you need waiting for you to accept it.

      Speaking from way too much familial experience you won’t be ‘free’ of alcohol you’ll be in a better position to resist it. You’ve made a concerted decision to stop and it will take all of the strength you have and support from friends to continue.
      We’re here for support and I hope you have friends there -old drinking companions are not friends. I have one son who had support from his church and he quit but if you go AA they can be a lifesaver.
      Wishing you well, as I’m sure everyone here is. Keep us informed.

        White people invented quinoa. Then gave it to Africa, because it’s a high-protein plant that grows in adverse conditions.

        Now it’s too expensive for Africans to afford, because it’s haute cuisine to rich white liberals, and they’re buying it all up.

        They can’t even make a tractor, or smelt metal.

        They can be forced to mine cobalt for Prius batteries, though, starting at a very young age, in the DRC. Or play football for the NFL to entertain us. It’s sad, but true.

        I’m still working on my common decency.

    The Prineville Oregon Railroad basically saved the Central Oregon economy when the main routes of commerce pulled out and stranded trade. Moons ago, I was putting together a travel/jobs portfolio about the adventures of our family mascot “Ken” and I travelled to the Prineville rail yard. I was lucky enough to catch a photo of an awesome Prineville Railcar and an excited Ken as he embarked on his quest of perhaps being a hobo.

    I love the iron work on this car.

    While the media, local and national, are all agog over Trump’s star Hamas overnight launched over 150 projectiles (rockets, artillery) into Israeli serttlements along its border. After this Israel’s about ready to march in and kick the Shiite outta Hamas and on a major scale.
    I’m betting Iran’s got a hand in this trying to draw heat away from their problems in Syria with Israel and see if they can goad Israel into going into Palestine and provoking a wider Moslem/Israeli war.
    On the other hand, we have a Non-Moslem-butt-kissing-president in the WH for the first time in nearly a decade and he just might assist Israel in Moslem-butt-kicking ways that would help settle the Mideast for a while.

    Our Heavenly Father, Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.

    Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.

    Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump and Mike Pence and their families as they seek to lead America back to You.

    Grant us patience, Lord, as the evil ones try to anger us and cause us to fall.
