Today’s Sousa march is the one that so aptly fits Independence Day, The Stars & Stripes Forever. It was written on Christmas Day, 1896, first performed near Philadelphia on May 14, 1897, and following an Act of Congress in 1987, it was officially adopted as the national march of the United States of America. Whenever I hear it, it almost makes my heart burst with pride!
The most touching tribute to our flag and our country that I think I ever saw was at Buckingham Palace in London on 9/11/01, when they played our National Anthem. Just think of that – British military playing a song that commemorates a battle that they lost as a tribute to a sister country.
I just read that this is the only time that another country’s national anthem has been played outside Buckingham Palace, apart from during state visits. Her Majesty the Queen personally authorized the Guards to break protocol and play this, to give some comfort to Americans stranded in London due to airport closures.
Somewhere along the line when I was a teenager the Eagle became a real love of mine. I had dozens of magazine photos which were kept in a scrapbook along with pictures of other sailing craft.
I think it had to do with having read a romantic novel when I was around 14 whose central character was a handsome sailing captain. LOL! The title was PRAISE AT MORNING which was taken from an Alexander Pope quote: “Some praise at morning what they blame at night, but always think the last opinion right.” Surprising the things you can remember from 62 years ago. I wonder if that book is still in my library…I’ll have to check. Just for old times sake, I hope so.

Ok Stella, we must have a Vulcan mind-meld going on with sailing pictures because today I was showing the Eagle too!
Our 1st image was originally entitled Yankee Doodle but it came to be known as The Spirit of ’76 by A.M.Willard:
Then we have this colorful Ladies Home Journal cover showing how to respect our flag by never having it touch the ground (sorry I did not have time to clean up the label):
And ending with a couple of photos of the USCGC Eagle:
…and The Constitution, followed by The Eagle, leading a flotilla in Boston in 2012 to celebrate The Constitution’s role in the War of 1812.
Thank You God for our great country, and for allowing me to live here.
Have a great day everyone!

I never knew that replicas of sailing ships like this were being built ($$$$$$). I have pics of 3 or 4 different vessels. They are not exact replicas as they must meet safety regulations and have newer technology, but that can be hidden, and we can enjoy!
This is The Gotheborg:
…and her new 6 pound cannon. What is interesting in viewing photos of the ship’s interior is that sometimes it’s hard to figure out which way is up because the walls are curved, and it’s mostly all unfinished wood.
Have to run now, see you all later today! Have a great day! 😉

One of the Great 4th of July Speeches
https://www.weeklystandard.com/geoffrey-norman/one-of-the-great-4th-of-july-speeches
One of the great July 4th speeches was delivered by a shy man who played baseball for a living. Lou Gehrig played every day, never took a game off, until he was told, at age 35, that he was dying. More than 60,000 fans and former teammates came out to Yankee Stadium to honor him. Between the two games of the doubleheader, he came out of the Yankee’s dugout and stood, listening as former teammates spoke into the microphones that had been set up behind home plate. He was embarrassed enough by their words that he teared up. Among those paying tribute was Babe Ruth, his old teammate. The two had been estranged over some thoughtless remark of Ruth’s but they patched it up on this day.
When it was Gehrig’s turn, he couldn’t manage the words and and asked announcer and baseball writer Sid Mercer to speak for him.
“Lou has asked me,” Mercer said, “to thank all of you. He is too moved to speak.”
Gehrig began walking back to the dugout but the fans weren’t having it and shouted “We want Gehrig.”
Gehrig turned around and headed back toward the plate.
“Fans, for the past two weeks you have been reading about a bad break I got. Yet today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth.” …

I cry through that. Would be nice if every high school, college, and professional athlete had to listen to it at the beginning of each season. Gratefulness is a virtue that gives peace.

Rare copy of the US Declaration of Independence is found in a British archive among papers of an aristocrat who supported the rebels
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5917327/Rare-US-independence-declaration-UK-archive.html
A rare parchment copy of the American Declaration of Independence has been found at a British archive among the papers of an aristocrat who supported the rebels, officials have said.
The manuscript was discovered at the West Sussex Record Office in the southern English city of Chichester by a team of researchers led by two Harvard University academics.
Tests supported the hypothesis that it was produced in the 1780s, West Sussex County Council said earlier this week – just a few years after the declaration itself was issued in 1776.
The document ‘is the only other contemporary manuscript copy of the Declaration of Independence on parchment apart from the signed copy at the National Archives in Washington DC,’ known as the Matlack Declaration, a council statement said earlier this week.
The parchment is believed to originally have belonged to Charles Lennox, the Third Duke of Richmond.

It isn’t that hard to learn as much as they need to know. I learned in a swimming pool in Acapulco, and went down 30 feet in Acapulco Bay the next day (with an experienced diver holding my hand).

Problem is that they are 3 miles from the opening of the cave, not sure what is in-between but it doesn’t sound good. Points of passage will only allow for one person to fit through at a time, there are strong currents, visibility is zero at points, the water situation will only get worse for the next 2 1/2 months.
LikeLiked by 1 person
Oh and I forgot there are certain spots in the narrow passages that the divers actually had to remove their scuba gear.
SMH.
Again I understand adventurous boys, the youngest are only 11 but the coach? How he heck do you put your boys in this kind of danger?

I didn’t follow the story in great detail. Did they go in further in to get away from rising water? Were they in the cave when the flooding began and had to go further in to get away from it?
Though even I have to admit that the idea sounds, well, foolish. If you go further in to escape the flood, it seems like you would end up trapped.
LikeLiked by 1 person
Yes. The way I heard it, they were in the first mile (really stupid IMO) and when it started flooding kept going to escape the rising waters.
LikeLiked by 1 person
We don’t know exactly yet. We do know that the boys told some of their rescuers that they were participating in an initiation to show that they were becoming men. They were to travel to the farthest cave within the labyrinth of cave and tunnels and sign a wall.
Apparently it is a local rite of passage.
It is just the start of the monsoon season and they didn’t expect a storm. Storm came and their passage out was gone. There are warning signs around the cave mouth.
It sounds like it was a spontaneous decision to go into the cave. The brought no food and they only had one flashlight.

Just reading more about it. It seems most of the boys don’t even know how to swim. SMH.

Yes, they have repeatedly said that. I can’t imagine with living where they do.

Our Heavenly Father, Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.
Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.
Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump and Mike Pence and their families as they seek to lead America back to You.
Grant us patience, Lord, as the evil ones try to anger us and cause us to fall.
Spread blessings over Israel and Netanyahu.
We humbly ask that You please comfort those who are grieving and in pain.

I’ll have to suggest this to my friend. She has a puggle, who is a little hyper. She goes nuts during a T-storm. She came home the other day and the dog had trashed the whole house, even the bathrooms. So, now she has to put her in her crate whenever she leaves because we have all these pop up storms at this time of year. (Of course, I had suggested this before and she was worried that the doggie would bang around in the box)

Difficult Decision Looms on Rescuing Thai Boys From Cave
Should rescuers try to scuba dive with victims through flooded caves or wait months until waters recede?
https://www.wsj.com/articles/difficult-decision-looms-on-rescuing-thai-boys-from-cave-1530635607?mod=hp_listc_pos1
It seems to me unless a particular boy(s) panic that they are going to dive out.
They can’t drill another opening to the cavern that the boys are in without compromising the structure of the cave further endangering the boys and 4 months in a cave that still may flood would be far more interesting in a movie than in real life for teens, pre-teens and their 25 year old coach.
