People have started Independence Day celebrations early in the Conservative state of Idaho. I can hear the fireworks boom and firecrackers crackling off in the distance (and a few which sound like they are next door!). 2018 brings us an even better year than the last thanks to President Trump and his vision for America…

Fireworks are mostly illegal here. Some counties do allow but only certain cities in those counties sell them. Theres a few big shows but bc there are so many people, no parking, no where to si t and watch unless you stay all day. So, going to walmart in am to buy the party poppers and snappers for kiddo. Geez a kid cant even get some snakes, sparklers, and flowers. Maybe next year ill make a drive for contraband. 😎

Fireworks are legal here. People use them for 4th July, New years day, weddings, parties. I had larger fountains and smaller aerials for a family get-together last year. Think I’ll drive the neighbors nuts and do it again this year – because I have them left over from the 2 for 1 sale – don’t ya know can’t let them go to waste! 😉 There are 4 big fireworks stores in a nearby town so they all donate to the town for a big fireworks display on the 4th!

Sister Mary goes to the Mother Superior, and confesses that she blasphemed the name of Our Lord, while golfing.
Mother says “What happened?”
Mary says, “I was playing on the fourth hole, and it was a doozy, 473 yards, with a left dogleg and a hidden green… and I swung and hit the best shot of my life, and then the ball hit a bird.”
Mother says, “Is that when you blasphemed?”
Mary says, “No, because a squirrel came out of the woods next to the fairway, and grabbed the ball in his paws and started running toward the green. Then a hawk swooped down and grabbed the squirrel and flew off into the distance!”
Mother says, knowingly, “Ah. That’s when you blasphemed.”
Mary says. “No, Mother. The squirrel was struggling, and fell. Right onto the green. The ball fell out of his paws, and rolled to just eighteen inches from the green!”
Mother crosses her arms and says, “You missed the freakin’ putt, didn’t you.”

If you haven’t seen “Hacksaw Ridge” directed by Mel Gibson, that’s a must. Ordinarily I’m not much into “war” films. However, Desmond T. Doss’s wonderful story needed to be told; and Gibson brings the best out in his actors. Doss was a moral conscientious objector during WWII, but he still wanted to serve his country; so he became a medic.

Looking thru those pictures I talked about a fewdays back I found some pics taken in DC during a Desert Storm deployment. The pics were of a guy I spent a lot of time with in the Army, he was a Vietnam medic with the 25th Infantry Division and a local PD detective. He died a few years back – how to know you’re really getting old – and I do believe his son’s now on the PD. I’m going to see if I can locate him and send him the pix. Interesting thing is that going through some papers a few days before I went thru the pix I found his business card.

When the 56 Signers of The Declaration of Independence attached their signatures to that document, each knew they were committing treason against the British Crowne. If caught and captured, they risked death. But death would not be swift. It would be by hanging to the point of unconsciousness, then being revived, disemboweled, their body parts boiled in oil and their ashes scattered into the wind. Our Founding Fathers valued freedom, for themselves and their posterity, to the extent that they found this fate worth the risk. The story below tells what happened to the men who signed the Declaration of Independence. ~ from:
http://nhccs.org/Destiny.html
Five signers were captured by the British and brutally tortured as traitors. Nine fought in the War for Independence and died from wounds or from hardships they suffered. Two lost their sons in the Continental Army. Another two had sons captured. At least a dozen of the fifty-six had their homes pillaged and burned.
What kind of men were they? Twenty-five were lawyers or jurists. Eleven were merchants. Nine were farmers or large plantation owners. One was a teacher, one a musician, and one a printer. These were men of means and education, yet they signed the Declaration of Independence, knowing full well that the penalty could be death if they were captured.
In the face of the advancing British Army, the Continental Congress fled from Philadelphia to Baltimore on December 12, 1776. It was an especially anxious time for John Hancock, the President, as his wife had just given birth to a baby girl. Due to the complications stemming from the trip to Baltimore, the child lived only a few months.
At the Battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson, Jr. noted that the British General Cornwallis had taken over the family home for his headquarters. Nelson urged General George Washington to open fire on his own home. This was done, and the home was destroyed. Nelson later died bankrupt.
“Honest John” Hart, a New Jersey farmer, was driven from his wife’s bedside when she was near death. Their thirteen children fled for their lives. Hart’s fields and his grist mill were laid waste. For over a year he eluded capture by hiding in nearby forests. He never knew where his bed would be the next night and often slept in caves. When he finally returned home, he found that his wife had died, his children disappeared, and his farm and stock were completely destroyed. Hart himself died in 1779 without ever seeing any of his family again.
and and on….
Such were the stories and sacrifices typical of those who risked everything to sign the Declaration of Independence. These men were NOT wild-eyed, rabble-rousing ruffians. They were soft-spoken men of means and education. They had security, but they valued liberty more. Standing tall, straight, and unwavering, they pledged:
“For the support of this declaration, with a firm reliance on the
protection of the Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each
other, our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor.”
——————————
How many politicians today would give what they gave for our country? The vast, vast majority are politicians, not Patriots, and have no Sacred Honor.

Today’s painting is of the Battle of Flamborough Head in Sept. 1779. As commanding officer of the 42-gun former merchant ship Bonhomme Richard, Jones uttered his famous cry — “I have not yet begun to fight” — as his crippled ship fought the larger 50-gun HMS Serapis in the waters off Flamborough Head. (One report has the two ships locked together firing at each other causing them to “spin” in a pinwheel movement). Despite his sinking and burning ship, Jones refused to strike his colors. A well-timed grenade landed near ammunition on Serapis, and its ensuing explosion allowed Jones to get the upper hand and board the British ship upon their surrender. The captain who struck his colors that day was British. The Bonhomme Richard, however, sank the following day.
The below painting depicts Bonhomme Richard (center), commanded by Continental Navy Capt. John Paul Jones, closely engaged with HMS Serapis, commanded by Royal Navy Capt. Richard Pearson. Firing at right is the Continental frigate Alliance, while at left the British sloop-or-war Countess of Scarborough is engaging the French frigate Pallas. The original painting is in the U.S. Naval Academy Museum, Annapolis, Md. It was donated by the U.S. Naval Institute in 1949. ~ from CHIPS the Navy’s information technology magazine.
The serene night painting below is “Night Sky” by Robert Ayton:
And to finish we have a contrasting sunny, bright group of tall ships sailing in a regatta 🙂
Much more fun than a battle!
Have a great day everyone 🙂

Yes – I like how the light comes through the sails!
It’s very difficult getting nice paintings of the Continental Navy ships because so many were lost, and the ones that were left were either given back to their owners, or sold to pay off the debt of the war. The country had NO ships in it’s Navy for a few years.

Haiti saved the United States.
While we were in that weakened state after the Revolutionary War, Napoleon sent a vast armada to attack us from their Mississippi river holdings.
However, they stopped in Haiti to put down a slave rebellion led by Toussaint L’Ouverture, but he bogged them down with raids from the mountains until the French forces became decimated with tropical diseases, and the entire fleet was destroyed.
Napoleon decided the New World wasn’t all it was cracked up to be, and divested, selling the U.S. what came to be known as the Louisiana Purchase.
Toussaint was captured by subterfuge and imprisoned in a drafty, cold mountain fortress in France until his death.

When they sailed in sunny, tropical places, they would use brown or darker colored sails to cut down on the solar glare off of the white sails. Even today some of the tall ships have 2 different sets of sails – 1 white and 1 a darker color. From what I readin pirate days the sails were not really black, but brown. (I’m guessing even if they started out black, they faded to brown quickly).
This is the Amerigo Vespucci sailing with her darker sails:
Hope the little guy likes them. I’ll be posting more sailing ships 😉

What almost made me laugh:
” The bottom line: Judge Barrett has given every indication that she will be an activist judge on the Court. If chosen as the nominee, she will be the deciding vote to overturn Roe v. Wade and to strike down pre-existing conditions protections in the ACA. #WhatsAtStake — Chuck Schumer (@SenSchumer) July 2, 2018″
Judge Barrett was interviewed when she was a law school professor I think it was, and what she said when asked about Roe v.Wade (NOT an exact quote here) was she does NOT see it being overturned, but limitations being put on LATE-term abortions.
1. Most people even if they aren’t into politics or constitutional rights have an inner sense that telling someone ‘you can’t have that job because of your religion’, is wrong.
2. The majority of people agree partial-birth and late term abortions are wrong, so when the dems ask that same question of her during confirmation, and then criticise her answer, it will show the people how far off the cliff and out of touch with the people the dems are.
