Since we celebrate our Independence this week, it seems to me that it is a good time to enjoy the great marches of John Phillip Sousa. Today’s is “Semper Fidelis”, always faithful, the official march of the United States Marine Corps, played by the United States Marine Band.

    Good morning! Today, I have spent time on a .gov learning about becoming a citizen. Finally, my DH has decided to become a citizen. It is definitely complicated business! However, I’m going to help him best I can.
    The website gives instructions and all, but I noticed some strange things. It says that the applicant must pass a civics test. It consists of a combination of American history, and government. They call it a civics test. There is a site to take practice tests to pass. Just out of curiosity, I took the test. I made 100% on the test, but I noticed a couple of strange questions. “Name one of the two longest rivers in the USA”, and “Name a bordering state with Canada”. What has this to do with History or government? I’m really smart when it comes to geography, but it seems out of place.
    I’m going to help him all that I can, but do any of you have any suggestions?
    He also has to pass an English exam. No worries, He’s from England, lol!

      “Name one of the two longest rivers in the USA”, and “Name a bordering state with Canada”. What has this to do with History or government?

      It seems to me that they are after general knowledge which would indicate the applicant is serious about applying for citizenship and is interested enough in the U. S. to know things about the nation besides history and government. Make sure your husband also knows about our economic system. You never know whether or not they will have “surprise” questions.

      I wonder if anyone has ever been rejected for citizenship if he received a failing grade on the test.

      Geography has a lot to do with history and our country’s history. Many a war has been fought over a “patch of dirt”. For example, did you know there was a Revolutionary War naval battle fought on Lake Champlain in Vermont? British, Americans, and French had goods and men going in and out through Canada. Rivers were the super-highways of olden days, and a great amount of the wealth of a country moved on not only the seas, but the rivers.

      I’m sure your DH will do great on his test, and we welcome him to citizenry! 🙂

    My youngest sonm’s birthday is on the 4th – he was born on 4 July 1976. For all babies born on the 4th that year the hospital gave out o ne-time-only bicentennial birth certificates – you apply for a replacement now and all you get’s a plain old regular one – think I’m going to send it to him.

    Middle son’s b’day is in August – he’ll be 50. His wife wants me tosend her some pix of him so she can do a collage. She’s gonna be surprised, when his mom and I were divorced I kept all of the albums and most of the loose pictures. I’m sending him all of the pix of him saved from his birth on – neither of them suspect I have that many.
    Worst thing about going thru boxes of old pix is the memories they bring back. I have pix of my grandfather in his militia uniform, pix of my dad in England during WWII and thru his career until Vietnam, his return to England with the AF and hisr etirement. Have pix of him with my 52 year old son, 50 year old son and my 42 year old son.
    Pix of Zauber as a pup, pix of all of our cats through our almost 40 years together, our wedding pix (Kodak – told ya we was tight wads) we didn’t know we had and our marriage licence that has our wedding date we never remember.
    Found the pic of me prostrate (yeah, that’s the right word…) in the same place in Marcey Park
    where they found Vince Foster. Found pix of Czarina and I when we were much MUCH younger, before the dust started to settle. Found pix of me in grade school in the mid 50s. Woof! Sooooo many pix, sooooooo many memories.

    Looks like El Jefe Obrador has won the Mexican election, now the fun begins. El Jefe wants to work with the US but hates Trump…looks like the Rats have a new Communist-lite to cozy up to. This is going to be interesting to as El Jefe’s talking about nationalizing a lot of private business and deep frying the rich.
    Waiting to see how his election’s going to plasy with China, that’s going to be a whole nuther story.

    This is a very interesting read. I’m about 90 pages into this autobiographical piece.

    He says he’s an economist who has been colluding with big business with the aid of the government to provide glowing reports of how GDP of a target country would explode at 16% if they would get a loan and build up the infrastructure. Others would add requirement that the building all be done by American companies. If the country’s leaders went for it, the American companies would make lots of money, and the bankers, too. The forecasted growth would not materialize, though, and the country would be unable to repay the loan, putting them on the hook forever. The countries resources would be used as partial payment, thus plundering the country and making a select few incredibly rich.
    If the leader refused, the CIA would depose him.

        Yes and the people on the ground said that the caves would provide fresh water, The 25 year old coach kept his wits about him, the boys kept their wits about them and they stuck together.

        I’m sure it was overwhelming and scary, imagine the darkness, you can see the beam of light hurts the boys eyes, What a joyful sight it must have been for the searcher who found them!

            I think they are likely in a dull stupor, I don’t know if they had any food with them and 10 days without food for boys age 11 – 16 would be pretty devastating. If that is truly a video of the initial discovery and from the verbal exchange it seems to be exactly that my guess is the boys aren’t even sure if they are dreaming or if they really are being rescued.

            Imagine 10 days of darkness, no food, worrying about never being found or escaping the caves, worrying about the possibility of more flooding, not even knowing the passage of time because there isn’t even a sunrise or sunset. It could break a grown man.

                The Brits found them, americans (cave diving experts) are already there but I don’t know what capacity they are working in.

                A report has some of the boys with muscles beginning to atrophy. And they did not have food for ten days.

                The boys are too week for them to swim out but are being given nutrient rich meals. The boys will need to learn to scuba dive to get out or the will need to remain in the cave for 3 – 4 months until the water recedes. It sounds like their scuba diving out is a remote possibility. Doctors have volunteered to stay with the boys for 3-4 months if that is the decision that is made.

                they apparently went in the caves as some type of rite of passage initiation which many Thai boys do in the region. Apparently writing their names on one of the furthest in caves was the goal.

                  I just thought of something. I wonder how many of these young men have died in the past. Now there is a possibility of them being brought out alive one way or another. But, how many groups in the past have gone in there only to lose their lives because there was no way to get to them?

                    No idea.

                    If it is a well known local tradition perhaps if the rescuers were informed of this tradition they could have started searching nearer to where the “signature cave” is located and the the boys could have been found sooner.

                    Pure speculation on my part.

            I have noticed that Indians are like that. I know Indians that came here with absolutely nothing but the clothes on their backs and are now very wealthy hotel owners and real estate magnates. I know Indians who also came here with nothing and now work, very calmly, in convenience stores and gas stations that they own, 14 hours a day.

            I love and respect both castes. And I mean that, without snark. They do have a sense of calm, no matter what happens, along with a great dose of wisdom. Singhs and Patels, they do what they do, without complaint: don’t cross them, and they’ll be the kindest people you ever meet. I’ve heard both cuss people out, though. Deservedly. 🙂

    Vox Day had a great post yesterday about how conservatives should NEVER, EVER talk to the MSM when they want to interview you. They say that “so-and-so said such-and-such about you, and we want to get your side of the story”. Which only implies what you already know about the MSM, that they have THEIR side of the story, the narrative. They’ve already written the article about you, and they’re just looking for your participation so they can get some kill quotes in the article.
