So my art post for Father’s day is a little different, but it’s art! 😉
A 1959 Cadillac. It’s taking off with those space age fins! hahaha!
If that’s a bit too much, you can sit around on your custom made couch….
….and listen to a classic song 😉

Love the post, G & C! I enjoy going to classic car shows and seeing all the different models. They had so much character and artistry. Wish that would come back into vogue. It would be incredibly fun to ride around in a pink Cadillac!

What a wonderful time of excess and flair, the post-war joy of life after years of cars up on blocks in garages & barns! Also, plenty of room in the trunk for luggage to take on a cross country car trip with the family…. Pink was my mother’s favorite, so she had my father paint the refrigerator pink in 1958. In our new suburban tract house the toilets, bathtubs & sinks were also pink.

LOL We moved to FL in 1956 and bought a house. My mother told me one reason she wanted it was the pink and grey bathroom off her bedroom. It had pink fixtures and grey tile and was a very pretty bathroom with a pink and grey tile shower stall.

Was that in Carol City? That is where ours was. The house in NO which we bought in 1983 was also built in 1958 and had a pink & grey bathroom!

No, it was in Lakeland. One funny thing is, it had the same sq.ft. as my apartment has now. That is, until Daddy added on a Florida Room which was huge. Then we spread out a little.

We had 5. Unfortunately, my sister (5 years younger) and I didn’t get along at all and were crammed into a small bedroom. I was happy to leave home.

The last house I lived in (built in the 1940’s) had pink/peach and black tile in the bathroom, and it was in absolutely pristine condition! The floor was tiny peach/pink and white.
ADD: the tile in my bathroom now is black and white in a herringbone pattern. It was installed in the 1930’s.

I love houses built in the 30’s. I am always very comfortable in them for some reason.

Wet plaster walls, coved ceilings with picture rails, arched doorways, hardwood floors …
And my little house is modest compared to some in my neighborhood.

In the 70’s I lived in a wonderful train-car (one room after another in a straight line) apartment in a two story 4 plex in Coral Gables, built in 1927 (according to the toilet top) with small hexagonal black & white tile in the kitchen & bath, a huge deep bathtub, 12 foot ceilings, wood floors, and that very stucco with arched doorways! Also had French doors to the patio. Loved that apartment!

It sounds wonderful! Isn’t that something like the shotgun houses in NO?
My house is typical for the period – living room, dining room, kitchen all in a row on the west side of the house, and bedroom, bath, bedroom on the east side, with a small hallway connecting it all together. My daughter’s house in Illinois – built in the 1920’s – is similar, but larger, and her living room takes up the full width of the house at the front. Her dining room is huge, and is the true center of that house. She has a really nice finished basement too. I have one, but not a really nice finished one!

At 2, my son decided he wanted to be a garbage man. He was so excited about the big truck that came by and picked up the garbage. I took him out to see it each week and told the guys on it that he was so impressed with their job. I think they got a kick out of seeing him be excited about them each week and seemed to look forward to seeing him. They always had big smiles when they stopped. LOL

I never realized this band was so old. Real good blues. When I first heard it I thought it came out yesterday. Kind of like watching The Godfather. The production is that good.
We listen to a lot of blues on the Pandora at work, and this came up on the Joe Bonamassa channel. Or the Carlos Santana channel. Or the Bill Withers channel. Or the Buddy Guy channel. I can’t remember which. May have been the John Mayer channel, for that matter.

So let me tell you about Kafta, salad, a dishwasher and a waiter.
Friday I had plans to meet my mom and daughter at a midway point between our homes. My youngest had been down in Chicago visiting her sister, then she went to my mom’s house for a short visit thus the meeting for lunch at the halfway mark.
We were supposed to meet at 1pm, I arrived at 1pm and a young man welcomed me and told me to sit wherever I wanted to sit. I told him that I would be joined by two others. He said fine and I sat down in a booth facing a field. He brought me water and a tea.
Now, I have been to this particular eatery at least two dozen times and the food is always delicious, it is almost exclusively a local only joint because it is in the middle of nowhere. But they welcome the odd stranger and the owner/chef recognizes me and always says hello and asks how I’m doing.
Chef will make you anything even if it is not on the menu.
Anyhow the young man I have seen grow up he was a busboy and is now a waiter he lives “just down the road a bit” from the eatery.
Friday for the first time ever chef was not there.
1:26 arrives and in walks my mom, my dad, my sister and my daughter so I say to the young man, looks like we’ll need to move to a bigger table. No problem he says. Gracious sweet kid as always.
Did I mention that we were the only customers in the restaurant?
Ok so most things are a bit of an ordeal when we get this group together. My sister talks loudly because my parents are hard of hearing. My pops is old and suspicious of people as a general rule. My mom and sister both are penny pinchers and ask lots of questions of waiters/waitresses. The silverware doesn’t match and my sister notices and wrinkles her nose. I hadn’t noticed 🙄.
My dad asks me if I’m working. No dad I’m sitting at a restraint with you 🙂 .
So after much agonizing over a very simple menu we are ready to order. My mom orders a Mediterranean salad, romaine, spinach, feta cheese, kalamata olives, cucumbers, tomatoes and house made Greek dressing. Dad orders a cheese burger. Daughter an omelet with hash browns. Sister orders an onion. Yes she asked for an onion then she realizes that isn’t what she meant and asks for an omelet with hash browns and asks that the hash browns be extra crispy.
I’ve been ready to order since 2 minutes after I sat down and order the Kafta.
Another customer comes in and sits down.
Tick tock tick Tock.
About 35 minutes later most of our food arrives. My dads burger is unceremoniously plopped on a plate, no pickle, no garnish at all, just a cheeseburger on a plate. The Omelets look fine but the onions in my sisters omelet are caramelized. The waiter says that the salad is coming right up.
My Kafta should look like this.
Instead it is 8 miniature kafta burgers, about 8 slices of raw onion, one cube of feta cheese and a few slices of tomato.
Hmmm…
I taste the little flat kafta (and this style is the more traditional way of making kafta) it is very yummy with good Lebanese seasoning, I know chef made the pita and it is delicious, I get some cucumber sauce that was also made by chef and it is very tasty.
About ten minutes later my mom goes to the bathroom and on her way back she asks about her salad (the kitchen is almost part of the dining room) the waiter and chef say it is almost done.
We can hear the waiter and chef arguing 🤔.They go outside 😏.
Hmmm…..
So another 10 minutes passes by and I get up and go ask about the salad, I say “Come on guys, it’s been at least 50 minutes it’s just a salad.” Everything is still very friendly.
So in another 5 minutes the waiter brings out the Mediterranean Salad.
It is about 10 romaine leaves, a few slices of tomato, 3 slices of green pepper and a steaming warm soft boiled egg with a runny yolk plopped down on it. It is smothered in dressing.
I could not stop laughing, we were all laughing so hard we were crying.
This is the salad that my poor momma waited almost an hour for.
After I can compose myself I ask the waiter what the real story is about what’s happening. He looks a bit embarrassed and he says “Well chef went to his daughters graduation and I’m only a waiter, I was a busboy up until a few moths ago and the chef is in training, sort of, he’s the dishwasher” (Wooly if you’re reading this the chef/dishwasher could not have been more than 18 and had not a lick of the culinary skills that you have learned over the years), I’ve never cooked anything in my life but at least he has learned some things from watching chef.
So we are all laughing again at the absurdity of the whole situation. I asked why it took so long to make a salad and he said because the chef/dishwasher had ever made a salad before in his entire life 😂.
I asked him how they decided to make it, he said from reading the menu and googling 😀!
I said, I’ll give ya’ a hint you generally put cold eggs on a salad not hot eggs. He said “Oh that makes sense.” 😎
I asked him what they were going to do if other people came in and he said We stop serving at 1:30 I was just being nice to you! 😎.
The sign on the door said that they were open until 8pm for a fish fry, I said I thought you were open until 8 pm he said Well we are open until 1:30 for breakfast and lunch, then we close and reopen for dinner from 4 until 8 but Chef will be here for the Fish Fry if you want to come back! “
More laughs.
😜
Gotta run kiddos! Have a beautiful day 🙂 .

That is funny! I’m so glad you can see the humour in such a fiasco. I’ve worked in such places, and I’ve seen customers go ballistic at less. It seems “chef” (dishwasher) did the best he knew how, bless him! I’m glad you got to spend time with your lovely family, and that was priceless!

I was in Culvers once when an irate customer came in screaming about getting the wrong size fry or something in the drive-thru, the poor kid working gave him more fries and a gift card and the guy was still screaming about how a $10 gift card doesn’t make up for the terrible night that getting the wrong size fry was going to cause.
I had to bite my lip or you would have read about me on the news.

Sorta in the same vein, we gotta restaurant staff shortage in NOLA. A good part of it is we have about 1400 restaurants in NOLA, a lot more than we had pre-Katrina but, with an official unemployment rate hovering around 4.3% and the real rate higher than that, you’d think there wouldn’t be as much of a shortage of staff as there is.
The city has a wave of tourist activities, hardly a month goes by when something isn’t drawing them in, so most of these are quite active. The major restaurants in town are having the same problems though, they have a year round clientele and while their waitstaff wages are not super they draw a basde that tips very well. One of the major restauranteurs was on complaing he couldn’t find waitstaff even though the ones in his places could easily hit $50K a year. In a city where the median family income is ~$37K (and that includes the more prosperous suburbs) $50K ain’t bad.
As an aside, the NYT did an article on NOLA restaurants about 3 years ago where they said the cuisine was much better post-Katrina as the influx of out-of-area chefs has broadened the food selections, made it more international and pulled it out of the Cajun-Creole rut it was in. Yeah, who wouldn’t want to travel to NOLA to sample our fine baked beans and scrapple?
LikeLiked by 4 people
That’s about the dumbest comment ever. Maybe you locals benefit from broadened selections, but I imagine tourists want the cooking that made New Orleans famous for its food. The only reason I would ever be tempted to go there is for some of the world famous Cajun and Creole cooking.
When I go to Savannah, I eat nothing but Low Country food. It’s part of the fun of traveling, which I don’t get to do a lot of.

You are very understanding!
One time I was pressed into waitressing at a bar/restaurant that I used to frequent. The only person there was the owner’s son, and he was cooking and bartending, as nobody else had shown up. They had just recently started serving dinners, and the waitress didn’t show up, so I (a customer) was pressed into service. Fortunately, there was only one table!
Another time, my best friend and I were pressed into bartending duties at a wake! It was at a real Polish restaurant in Hamtramck MI, the funeral was the mother of a friend of ours, and my GF was a real bartender. I tend to over serve. Isn’t life fun?

It is! When I was 18 my friend called me and asked if I would take her shift. She was a cocktail waitress in her boyfriend’s nightclub. Her boyfriend happened to be in the mafia. I said I can’t I’m only 18 her response was, so what? So I went in and was a cocktail waitress at the ripe old age of 18.
Live music every Friday and Saturday. If I recall correctly on Friday we had a 3 AM license and Saturday a 4 AM license after workI would go out for breakfast with the bartender.
I have loads of stories.
It was fantastic money especially at that age.

Slower than last year, but we’re all getting our butts kicked, and happy for it. Gorgeous weather, too.
I think when I walk into work this afternoon, I’ll still be laughing about Lovely’s salad. I want to find who made that, and rub their nose in it. “Look what you did. Bad dog!”
Number 1 rule, violated, severely. Make a salad look pretty.
I’ve Googled recipes at work. Our bleu cheese dressing recipe that we still use I got from Food Network’s site, because we needed to make a batch on the fly one night, and for some reason it’s not in our Binder-O-Recipes. Now it is. Hand-written.
We have an encyclopedic book of culinary terms that chef has owned for years, on the line, that anyone can grab. Last night our special was an arctic char made “a la Provencal”. Our servers were, one and all, like “wut?” I say, “Lets go to the book, and learn.”
Even if we didn’t have that book in the kitchen — what everyone still doesn’t understand — we all have ALL the world’s knowledge in our pocket, on our phones. A gigantic, instantaneous library. “Okay Google! What is arctic char?” 2 seconds later the server knows it’s a cross between a salmon and a lake trout, and is quite good to eat.

I suspect they will not tell chef about their day 🙃. I paid cash and they gave us much of it “on the house” they were really apologetic. I just thought it was so absurd. I’m not really convinced the cat is really a chef in training it was really just so odd for chef not to be there , and chef makes it look easy so they probably thought, “Meh let’s try it, while Chef’s away!”

Italians sometimes (and I think French too) put poached eggs on top of their salads – but they look much better than this one! I watched Lidia B. make a similar salad on PBS yesterday. First she cooked mushroom and onions with scallion tops, cooled them, then tossed with frisee lettuce, oil and vinegar, and topped it all with a poached egg. Great brunch dish.
Oop! I forgot – there was bacon (well, really it was pancetta) diced and crisped up and added to the salad.

I’ll just have the toast today. Mornin’ Nyet, everyone. 🙂

To be expected. She opts for the carbs, not the bacon. SMH.

Good morning, Nyet! I’ll take a blueberry muffin, some scrambled eggs and that good-looking cantaloupe, though as with many things, looks can be deceiving. Recently I purchased some cantaloupes already halved, put them in the fridge for dinner. If they’d been shaped like a shoe that would have been more accurate…whatever taste there was at all was leathery. I think even lovely’s restaurant would have rejected them. LOL!

And the poop pile deepens: https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/trump-associate-roger-stone-reveals-new-contact-with-russian-national-during-2016-campaign/2018/06/17/4a8123c8-6fd0-11e8-bd50-b80389a4e569_story.html?utm_term=.158fa8e1219d
So if the ‘contact’ does turn out to be an active plant designed to do damage to the Trump campaign will Congress be looking at the Bureau for illegal, if not bordering on treasonous, acts?

The article refers to 11 instances of “Russians” making contact with people in the Trump org. in the months before the election. Sounds like “someone” repeatedly trying to get a Trump associate to “take the bait” by sending different actors to a variety of people.

Didn’t say if any of these ‘Russians’ were business people, whether they were Russians working for concerns in other countries or just delivering pizza.

Interviews and additional documents show that Greenberg has at times used the name Henry Oknyansky. Under that name, he claimed in a 2015 court filing related to his immigration status that he had provided information to the FBI for 17 years. He attached records showing that the government had granted him special permission to enter the United States because his presence represented a “significant public benefit.”
There is no evidence that Greenberg was working with the FBI in his interactions with Stone, and in his court filing, Greenberg said he had stopped his FBI cooperation sometime after 2013.
🙄Sure the Russian told the Feebies “no”. Sure.
Such funny people.
Proof is in the pudding Stone said Trump never pays for anything 😎. Gotta love the mess the cabal has weaved itself into.
Imagine if the shoe was on the other foot, the only thing the MSM would be asking is “What dirt does Russia have on Trump?”
These people all need to be locked up.

“If you believe that [Greenberg] took time off from his long career as an FBI informant to reach out to us in his spare time, I have a bridge in Brooklyn that I want to sell you,” Caputo said in an interview.
In a separate interview, Stone said, “I didn’t realize it was an FBI sting operation at the time, but it sure looks like one now.”

If the Bureau were investigating a private entity and had the poop they do on themselves there’d be people in jail left and right.

Same thing I was thinking President Trump must be awfully clean. They have been fishing for a crime, a false witness, a mattress with its tag torn off for almost 3 years and come up with nada.

They vwere trying to get him on some of that manufactured evidence they’ve been caught using before. Guess the new breed of perjurors just ain’t up to speed yet.

As Dershowitz said, Mueller is not looking for one of President Trump’s confidants to sing, he is looking for them to compose.

Thanks for sharing that, Menagerie. I do like it very much. I used to read the COTR columns regularly, but this is the first time in a long time (goes back to the Trump bias before the election). I have just started paying attention to Jordan Peterson, so this is a good reminder to go back and watch more of his videos.

Rode up to the po-po yesterday with this on my Bluetooth speaker. I keep it on a bookmark.
Cop was laughing. We had a good conversation, after I turned it down a bit.
I used to live in an apartment on a fairly busy street. Whenever the cops pulled someone over outside my apartment window, I put my speakers in the window and played it loud. I never got anything but big smiles from both them and the perps. They look up at my window like “Really?”

We used to have a dog who howled along to this music every time “Cops” came on the TV. I laugh when I think about it. His, coloring was Doberman but he had Irish setter hair, tail & ears. He followed us home from a walk we took to the river one afternoon, ate some cat food, & never left.

He was a gentle fellow, let the cat sleep on him, but didn’t like Mr. Bird, the starling, to land on his head! Besides “Cops” he knew the music for the 10 o’clock news meant I was going to bed soon, so he always got up and went to lie down on his mat on my side of the bed. Czar always said he was a lady’s dog.

My old dog, Sassy, would stare at me, start to grumble loudly (part Beagle), then go sit at the foot of the stairs. If none of those worked, she went to bed alone.

She was a mongrel from the shelter, but probably the smartest dog I ever owned. My friend said to me once, “You talk to that dog as if she understands what you are saying. You know what? I think she does.” And she did indeed.
My DD picked her out at the Humane Society. She was kind of funny looking, but a great dog.

My cousin’s husband used to talk to his dog like she was a person. She always listened to him. One day she rang the bell at the door to go out. She had just come back in, so my cousin told her if she wanted to go out again she needed to go tell her daddy. Off she went down the hall to find him in the bedroom and aggravated him until he came to let her out. There were so many instances where I know she knew what people were saying.

These Harvard kids got the lesson of their life in the Heartland
https://nypost.com/2018/06/16/these-harvard-kids-got-the-lesson-of-their-life-in-the-heartland/
We were only a few days into a new course I had developed with Harvard’s Institute of Politics, called the Main Street Project, where students are immersed in small-town America. Even though these kids had almost all been raised in the United States, our journey sometimes felt like an anthropology course, as though they were seeing the rest of the country for the first time. And this was their opening lesson.
I have been a national political journalist for nearly 15 years. Whenever and wherever I travel in this country, I abide by a few simple rules: No planes, no interstates and no hotels.
And definitely no chain restaurants. …

lilbirdee12’s prayer:
Our Heavenly Father, Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.
Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.
Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump and Mike Pence and their families as they seek to lead America back to You.
Grant us patience, Lord, as the evil ones try to anger us and cause us to fall.
Spread blessings over Israel and Netanyahu.
We humbly ask that You please comfort those who are grieving and in pain.
Thank you Father, for Your Love and the gift of Life.
In Jesus name, we pray. Amen.

My friend and I went back to the local theater today to see The Tingler. I remember seeing this over and over back when we had a small TV and most of the stations had snow on them. So, it was pretty fun to go see this on the big screen in the theater. There were more people in the theater than there were yesterday, and everyone seemed to really enjoy the movie, although there were a lot of laughs and nobody actually screamed. I think we have all seen too many cop and coroner shows and know a little too much about the law to take the movie seriously nowadays.
