Aww, beautiful! I have fresh cut sunflowers on my bar. The Flower Chicks, four young sisters ranging in age from teens to six or so raise flowers on their family farm, and on Fridays they sell them in their roadside stand. They are about a mile down the road, and I like to get flowers weekly if I remember it. They sure work hard, out in the fields every day. I see their grandmother with them a lot.

Our final state flower is the New Hampshire Purple Lilac
(Yeah, it’s a long one. I love Lilacs, & I’m waay too tired to figure what else to delete.)
Lilacs have been cultivated since 1563. Purple Lilacs (Syringa vulgaris,) were brought to New England from Europe perhaps as early as 1620 & planted at the Portsmouth home of Gov. Wentworth in 1750. (George Washington & Thomas Jefferson grew lilacs in their gardens as well.) The Purple Lilac was chosen as New Hampshire’s state flower from a group of 9 different flowers because it “is symbolic of that hardy character of the men & women of the Granite State”, becoming the state flower in 1919. A lilac bush can live for HUNDREDS of years providing fragrant lilac blooms each spring. Lilacs planted centuries ago are still thriving today.
Today’s lilacs are larger & more diverse in color & form from the ones early settlers had. The reliable, hardy old fashioned lilac bushes that produced thousands of extremely fragrant purple blooms in everyone’s yard for Memorial Day is the basis of the modern French Hybrids. The Common Purple Lilac (Syringa Vulgaris) is the most popular lilac variety. Syringa (lilac) is a genus of 12 species of flowering woody plants in the olive family (Oleaceae), native to woodlands. They are cherished all over the world for their splendor & charming fragrance with a range from southeastern Europe to eastern Asia, & North America, being widely & commonly cultivated in temperate areas elsewhere. The fragrant lilac can be expected to grow in Hardiness Zones 3–7.
Purple lilacs make a beautiful, fragrant hedge growing to a height of 8–15′ & a spread of 6–12′ at maturity. This shrub grows at a medium rate, with height increases of 13–24″ per year. This NH hedge photo is like the one in the yard where I grew up. I really miss those lilacs.
They are small trees, ranging in size from 7 ft to 33 ft. tall. Lilacs grow in a rounded shape, but can be pruned into a single-stemmed or multi-stemmed tree. The Purple Lilac is an amazing, robust & sturdy flowering tree able to withstand temperatures down to minus 40°F, but they need protection from cold winds that can kill flower buds. Importantly, lilacs will not tolerate poorly drained sites where the roots freeze in blocks of ice during the winter. In fact, the species does not grow well at all in areas without significant frost in the wintertime. They will not tolerate hot & humid, or hot desert conditions.
It is Important to know when buying lilacs HOW THE SHRUB WAS PROPAGATED. Lilacs grown on their own roots are superior to grafted lilacs. Grafted lilacs grow quickly at first, but sometimes the rootstock (which is commonly privet, but can sometimes be S. vulgaris ) produces suckers that overtake the Lilacs, RESULTING IN AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT SHRUB (Privet!). Purple Lilacs produce new shoots that grow from the base or roots of the shrub, so if there is a non-grafted mature lilac you admire, ask permission to remove several rooted suckers from the shrub & plant them. Lilacs are easy to transplant (I have done so myself, although they did not bloom the 1st year, they bloomed well in the 2nd year & filled out in the next few years.) Plant these sturdy shrubs at least five feet from buildings, since their root systems can damage foundations over time. Do not plant them in “frost pockets” or against warm, light-colored buildings that force the buds prematurely. They need full sun & neutral to slightly alkaline rich organic soil. Lilacs need well-drained soil & will not tolerate standing water. Lilacs hate wet feet, but can get powdery mildew from low soil moisture combined with high humidity levels at the plant surface.
Modern lilac colors include white, violet, blue, lavender, pink, magenta & purple. Flowering varies between mid spring to early summer, depending on the species. Purple Lilacs produce very fragrant, light purple, 0.2 to 0.4 inch diameter florets with four petals forming from a narrow tube borne in 4–8″ panicles, usually in pairs, on the previous year’s growth. The blossoms sit against dark green to bluish green, heart shaped leaves 2–5″ long. Immature lilacs produce flowers with lighter coloration, & it may take 4–6 years for their true color to show. Lilacs can bloom when they are only a few inches tall, & the blooms are often bigger than the actual plant! 🙂 Colors are most intense during cool, damp springs, & soil type can alter flower color. Often the buds & open flowers are of different colors. This “unfolding of the colors” is part of the charm of lilacs. From the beginning of bud color to the fading of the flowers, purple lilacs typically bloom for 16 to 20 days, the longest bloom period of all lilacs. If several species are planted, the lilacs can be in full bloom for at least six weeks. Shade greatly reduces flowering, causes plants to become leggy & increases powdery mildew problems. However, do not plant dark-flowered lilacs on sites that receive hot afternoon sun, which fades the flowers quickly. The lovely Lilac fragrance is one of the most powerful & commonly used fragrances emitted by a plant. Fragrance varies considerably with species & cultivar. Even on the same shrub, fragrance depends upon stage of bloom, time of day & temperature, being most fragrant when warm & sunny when the florets are fully open.
Make sure your lilacs get water during the months of June & July when buds for the next year are being formed. Fertilizing lilacs within two years of transplanting can harm the roots. Lilacs rarely need fertilizer. High nitrogen fertilizers favor leaves over flowers & may increase winter injury & bacterial blight. Prune if needed IMMEDIATELY AFTER BLOOM in spring because you will cut off next years buds if pruned later. If pruned, the plant responds by producing fast-growing young vegetative growth with no flowers in an attempt to restore the removed branches. Most lilacs have little fall color, & the fruit is a brown capsule, splitting in two to release two winged seeds.
The below painting is Lilacs of Love by Carol Cavalaris
Purple Lilacs (Syringa vulgaris,) have been an important part of landscaping due to their hardy nature, ease of care, extended flowering, bright color, & intoxicating fragrance. They give generations of reliable bloom, sweet fragrance. are deer resistant, & are good for cutting. Lilacs attract & offer cover for pollinators, butterflies, & hummingbirds. They are often considered to symbolize love. In Walt Whitman’s poem “When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom’d” lilacs are a reference to Abraham Lincoln. The ‘President Lincoln’ variety of lilac has been popular since its introduction in 1916. Annual Lilac Festivals are held in various locations across the country. Every year The NH Governor’s Lilac & Wildflower Commission has a Lilac Photo Contest with hundreds of photos submitted from all over the state.

I love lilacs. I love the way they grow, they way they hang on the ends of the stemps, their color, their fragrance. And, when I lived in Upstate NY, I discovered that I am very allergic to them. 😦 That is really the only place I have ever lived, I think, where they actually grow, thank goodness.

Keeping this color or staining it?

You have hit on the question that has/is causing me a great deal of consternation.
My original thought was that I would paint the bedroom white, stain the bathroom a darker color, paint the laundry/entry white and clear-coat the original bank space so it resembled what the bank would have looked like when it first opened, but
I’m lovin’ the natural wood….so czarina, my short answer is, I’m not sure. :0)

“GREEN GROW THE LILACS ”
Music historians worldwide disagree about the origins of this song. Many think that it is Irish in origin while many think it was composed during the American-Mexican War in the 1840’s
LikeLiked by 4 people
And some theeenk the origin of the word ‘Gringo’ is the mispronunciation of the words ‘green grow’ in the song. Mexican natives heard the soldiers singing the song and – poof – misunderstanding/mispronunciation took it from there.

And as more Moslems are dumped into the US by the corrosive cultural engineering crew we’re going to see more of this. The Communists under the USSR pushed their cultural antisemitism as doctrine. The Nazis we allowed to ‘escape’ to the Mideast and join with jew-hating Moslem elements there, the German midwives to the current Moslem holocaust-in-creation, are also nose deep in feeding the US holocaust-lite plans.
You’d think that with all of the Jewish members in the Rat ranks you’d see US racist remediation and resettlement programs for Jews from around the world but no, they help import the snakes that would and will slit their throats. Hey Schumer, Feinstein – when thery come for you forget my phone number.

I am disgusted about this. It is purely politically. If not why no complaint when Obama was president. I think it has more to do with their overall concern of Trump is not letting in the whole world so their payments are reduced for the immigrants they bring in and then dump off on the taxpayer to support. They have made Billions off of them. I don’t remember them freaking about abortion lately either. When is the last time, if ever, have you heard a priest say anything about abortion at Mass (other than on EWTN)?
And as far as the Holy Family being immigrants, It is my understanding when they fled into Egypt, that Egypt was also part of the Roman Empire. So they were just basically moving from state to state, not to another country, and certainly not across an ocean, or through multiple safe countries to get to the one with the best hand -outs. They also were not trying to destroy or take over where they went, and they were certainly not violent. It is so wrong to compare the Holy Family to millions of immigrants, some good, some bad, and some with evil intent and actions.

Bishop Edward Weisenburger of Tucson, a canon lawyer, suggested “canonical penalties” for Catholics “who are involved” in the separation of families.
What about Catholics who voted for politicians who demand that a mother can separate her baby’s head from his or her body while that baby is in her womb?
What about Catholics that voted for a man who doesn’t want his daughters punished with a baby, a man who voted to allow infants to die without any medical intervention if escape the womb reaper?
Where were the canonical penalties for supporting true monsters?
Bishop John Stowe of Lexington, Kentucky, suggested pastoral outreach for border agents struggling with their consciences.
Perhaps Bishop John Stowe should pray that his conscience be informed and enlightened and stop his attempt to lay guilt upon innocent men and women. Perhaps Bishop Stowe should talk to the parents, thousands of them who have been separated from their children by the very people Stowe desires to bring into our country. Separated through no choice their own but separated by the murder of their children by illegal aliens.
“If you want to save the unborn, you have to walk through the doors of the undocumented’.”
Wow. I choose to not accept this nonsensical guilt trip. Keeping innocent people safe from the likes of the savages of M-13 and other garden variety criminals has nothing to do with protecting the unborn, one’s not intractable from the other.
If you want to save the horses, you have to walk through the doors of Ikea. Makes just as much sense as the other “IF”.
Would these Catholic men condemn Christ because Jesus turned to the repentant thief on the cross and told him that he would be with Christ in paradise, yet Christ did not turn to the other criminal and say the same thing? It seems to me by their logic Christ would be condemned for not giving pardon, giving amnesty regardless of the man’s intent.
What about those ten pesky commandments?
Let’s just apply two to the current tomfoolery that these men are pushing on President Trump’s supporters.
1 I am the Lord thy God, thou shall have no other Gods before me.
No other Gods includes ego, virtue signaling and money. Ego is put above God when one decides that they can read the heart of another and this is exactly what these men are doing. They are attributing evil motive to an action, an action that has been twisted and perverted to serve their egos and their misguided understanding or their malicious intent. I’d hope it is the former.
Ilegal immigration is a million dollar industry for the Catholic Church. Can you sirs serve two Gods?
9 Thou shall not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
But here we are – bishops, cardinals, the Pope bearing false witness against us. They claim we should be disciplined for having un-human hearts, we are un-American, un-biblical, for wanting to keep people safe. We are separating no one! it is the mothers and fathers who choose to risk their children’s trust by breaking our laws. They do so with the full knowledge that they might be separated from their children, the loving parents are the ones putting their children at risk.
The parents choose to steal another family’s place in line, they choose to break the law, they choose to risk their children.
***
If these men are so passionate about immigration and not self interested, ego money driven virtue signalers then perhaps they should all go down south and protest Mexico’s draconian heavy handed immigration policy. Or pray with the drug cartels or go to war with the cartels, why are they inert?
Ps Cardinal Dolan a Trump hater is also condemning us.
Un-American and unbiblical’: New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan blasts Trump for separating children and their parents as the administration holds firm on ‘zero tolerance’ illegal immigration policy
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5850851/Dolan-calls-Trump-administration-zero-tolerance-policy-American.html
The Trump administration’s policy of removing children from their parents at the US border is ‘un-American and unbiblical,’ New York’s Archbishop Cardinal Timothy Dolan said on Friday.
‘I don’t know if you want the Jewish scripture or Christian scriptures, the Koran, no. We’re talking about the human heart, the American people and the noble American tradition,’ said Dolan.
Cardinal Dolan perhaps you should look into the traditions promoted by that Koran and the people of the Koran that you are piously waving in the face of people who actually do hold children, childhood, women, humanity itself as sacred.
Dolan, who was appointed in 2009 by Pope Benedict XVI, said that Jews, Muslims and Christians all agree that the policy is wrong and should be rescinded.
Wait, what Dolan? The Muslims who mutilate the genitals of young girls, the Muslims who rape both young boys and young girls, the Muslims whose Alah allows for intercourse with goats and camels if a woman or child is unavailable, are lecturing me on morality? The Muslims whose great prophet took one of his wives when she was 6 years old?
Gentlemen, your cocky audacity, your judgement of me and my motives, your virtue signaling while spitting on the memory of those slaughtered by the hands of illegal immigrants, the washing of your hands and blaming the flock has been done before.
We are not begging you for a crucifixion we are begging for you to be the body of Christ on earth.
You may say anything you want about me, you may excommunicate me out of your love for me (or is it for profit, things get so fuzzy when there is so much money at stake.) What you cannot do is define me nor corrupt me nor speak for me nor damn me nor hoodwink me nor guilt me into accepting evil as virtue no matter how many bows you out upon it.
Without law there is no love.
‘Orderly and lawful processes are good in themselves,’ Sessions said. ‘Consistent, fair application of law is in itself a good and moral thing, and it protects the weak.’
PS How many of you voted for Hillary Clinton and feel that you have the moral fortitude to judge others?
Do you know the reason why the Clintons claim that they left their church? Because the church preached that slaughtering babies in the womb was immoral. Bang up job of mocking God fellows, bang up job.
Go to hell.

It was quite the Facebook dustup. Our priest, also a canon lawyer, posted it. As you might expect, most of the people commenting supported it. Most of the Catholics I know buy the Church’s teaching on this absolutely.
This article made me madder than I have been in many, many years. Then I went to mass and danged if the sermon didn’t touch on immigration too,

I remember you talking about him. I’m sorry lovely. What to think about these people?
I don’t know much about the Byzantine Church and Easter Rite churches, so my comments may not apply to them.
I believe in the celibate priesthood, and yes I know some are not celibate since the Anglicans came into the Church. However, I have to wonder if some of the priests, bishops, and cardinals aren’t sheltered from reality too much.
OTOH, so much truth, beauty, goodness, and holiness comes from our priests, nuns, and brothers. As in all things, there is good and bad in both.

I agree Menagerie. The Mass is beautiful. The lifting up of the human spirit to be kissed by the divine, what could be better?
the Byzantine church allows for married priests, in Europe it has always been allowed, in America about 12 years ago(?) The Byzantine rite allowed for married men to become priests but not for men who were already Byzantine priests to marry.
My Godfather, a priest was chaste, celibacy implies total abstinence as in being a virgin. He was a fallen away Catholic who came back to the Church. Beautiful man. Very devout. I don’t know why I just remembered that about him being chaste rather than celibate.
Anyhow one of the most empathetic and wise priests that I have ever known was an older priest he had been married for decades, he was a deacon, they had no children so when his wife passed away he became a priest. He said it would have been impossible to be married ti the Church and to his wife because both deserve to be “first.”
It is a complicated time. I don’t pretend to have the answers, I just hope and try to be faithful and loving.

We had Catholic churches in NOLA proudly holding themselves up as ‘sanctuary’ churches for immigrants in the early 90s. They hid illegal Latino immigrants and the city and Feds basically did nothing.
I have no problems with the Feds seperating the kids, they’re getting far better treatment in those camps than they were at ‘home’ – the free medical care and all the food they can eat? As was also mentioned, their parents have been caught in an illegal act and have been ‘jailed’ and even the oppressive and evil gringos don’t get to take their kids with them to jail.

Absolutely the best commentary on the Bourdain suicide…
Thread by @ThomasWictor: “(1) One more thread about Anthony Bourdain, who took his own life at the age of 61. (2) My advice to everyone is to figure out what you REALLY want to do.

Bourdan reminds me of George Sanders:
“George Sanders’ suicide by Rebecca Ascher-Walsh May 08, 1992 at 04:00 AM EDT
George Sanders was a man who had everything: four wives (including Zsa Zsa Gabor and her sister Magda), seven psychiatrists, more than 90 film appearances, and an Oscar. But all that wasn’t enough to keep him interested. On April 25, 1972, at age 65, Sanders swallowed five bottles of Nembutal in a hotel room in Castelldefels, Spain, and took his final curtain. He left a legacy in the form of his suicide note: By early May, when the message had made headlines all over, the world knew it had a classic farewell on its hands. ”Dear World,” Sanders wrote in part, ”I am leaving because I am bored.”
Boring he was not. Frequently cast as the witty heavy, Sanders was a dedicated crank. In fact, he called his 1960 autobiography Memoirs of a Professional Cad. ”I am always rude to people,” he once said. ”I am not a sweet person. I am a disagreeable person. I am a hateful person.” A man of many trysts, he was especially hateful when it came to women. ”A woman, a dog, and a walnut tree — the more you beat them the better they be,” he once said…….” http://ew.com/article/1992/05/08/george-sanders-suicide/
I will waste no more of my time & thoughts on such a narcissist.

I feel bad I often can no longer debate details of law. I used to have a great mind for law, and regularly regret my decision not to go to law school for a Phd in Constitutional law when I had the chance, but I am exhausted from overwork, and need “fluff/art painting posts” to relax at night.
When I do have time I try to do something more local where I can perhaps have an actual impact. Currently I am gathering info on requesting a pardon for Jerry Delemus, who is still in prison, even though the law says he really should be set free.

I discovered many years ago that law is not absolute, it’s a guidepost and lawyers are the dogs that pee on it.
My favorite example is the DUI law: ovder .08 and you are legally too drunk to drive a car. II sat in court for a lawyer who’d been busted for DUI…see where I’m going here?
Arguement is that the Constitution grants the presidenr unlimited pardon powers, even the power to pardon someone before that person’s tried, pardons granted while the pardonee is still innocent. My arguement is that it is not worded to limit or grant the president unlimited powers. In the Civil War case one of the judges’ opinions was that the President had unlimited pardon power (sort of a get out of jail free card) and in the case of Ford’s pardon of Nixon it was a wise Ford telling the US and Democrats that the Nixon wound was over, time to move on and if they tried to go back and go after Nixon he’d pardon him – they shouldn’t waste their time and should let wounds heal.
Arguements raged that the case law from the Civil War ended the cebate – I retorted that it was case law, not a Constitutional guarantee, and that case vlaw trequently gets reversed. I quoted the Dred Scott decision where just before the Civil Warbthe SCOTUS said slaves were property and not citizens only to have thec 14th Amendment change the case law. I ain’t going back for a while, rocks are still coming over the fence.

Bottom line? Obama single-handedly ruined the FBI and the DOJ
By Patricia McCarthy – June 16, 2018
Naturally, the political-media Left that crowds out saner voices on television was quick as jackrabbits to announce that the FBI was vindicated by the I.G. report that was released on Thursday. “Nothing to see here, move along” was their mantra.

I went to our local movie theater. The one that was built in the 20’s or 30’s that has been restored and updated. The movie playing was “Beast” and the ad said it was a sort of fairy tail. It was not at all, in any way, what I expected. It was made in 2017 and was British. I read the reviews on it when I got home and the critics thought it was very good along with most of the regular people who saw it. Personally, I thought the camera work looked amateurish. I am sure it was done on purpose, but half the time I couldn’t figure out what was going on. I wonder if the writer needs therapy. Another problem was I couldn’t understand what they said a lot of the time. But, the worst was that after sitting all the way through the movie, I am not really certain what happened at the end.

lilbirdee12’s prayer:
Our Heavenly Father, Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.
Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.
Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump and Mike Pence and their families as they seek to lead America back to You.
Grant us patience, Lord, as the evil ones try to anger us and cause us to fall.
Spread blessings over Israel and Netanyahu.
We humbly ask that You please comfort those who are grieving and in pain.
Thank you Father, for Your Love and the gift of Life.
In Jesus name, we pray. Amen.

Geez, facing the irritating prospect of having to fly in August. nI have avoided doing so post-911 due to the ridiculousTSA procedures, you practically have to arrive the day before due to the lines. I have PreCheck but they usually put some schlub on the line who’s so incompetent his line’s as slow as the ‘up against the line’ one.
As they’re sloooowly processing us I remember their early history, especially how they were formed, the TSA’s not publishing the numbers of clerks fired for theft from passengers, the TSA basicall classifying the numbers of ‘weapons’ they accidentally discover on secondary searches…all of that good stuff. If it weren’t for my taking my GGS I’d just take the train, even if it does take about 15 hours to get there. Pick your inconvenience.

Opps, for reference, New Orleans to Dallas. I can fly there in 1 hour and 30 minutes plus the one hour drivetime from my house to the airport. It’s a 15 minute drive from my house to the Amtrack station and 15 hours to Dallas from there. Now there’s government 21st century convenience.
