That’s the best beach. No people. You and a friend, that’s it, as far as the eye can see.
Ever seen Revere Beach in MA in the summer? Long Beach in Gloucester? Long Beach is beautiful, and very long, but you have to step over and navigate all the bodies and chaos.
I live two blocks from the lake. The only time I visit our beaches is early morning and late night, in the summer. When you’re the only one there, it’s a sacred place.
Why would anyone want to lay on Revere Beach and get a tan with 20,000 people? I don’t get it. Other than it’s city people, who only know city, gettin’ at one wit’ nature, because they’re close to water and sunshine.
About fifteen years ago, I watched a meteor shower on an empty beach. Just me and a sweet gal. My best memories are on Lake Michigan beaches. All of them.

You’ve posted that one before, and I still wonder where it was taken. It has to be way further north than me, because I’ve never seen any natural rock around a beach on Lake Michigan.

Wohoohooie! Beach. I need a solitary, by myself trip to the beach. Might take one soon! I have always wanted to live by the beach, but I think if I did, even going asleep and waking to the sounds of the surf, I would miss my deep green woods sooner or later.
I need to be wealthy enough to have both places, and go back and forth.
Aah, morning fantasies. Good morning everyone.

The Outer Banks are fantastic. I went to grad school at UNC-Chapel Hill in the mid-80s and spent many short vacays at the beach. Bear Island is gorgeous; go the first few days after the full moon in July to see loggerhead turtles (huge!) come ashore to lay their eggs in the sand.

M old partner in Florida was shot (not badlty, as shootings go) when he went down onto the beach late at night to investigate some suspicious activity, Seems it was a group of newly-arrived immigrants stealing turtle eggs for the market who objected to his interfering with their enterpreneurial activities.

Today’s states and flower is for both Louisiana & Mississippi – the Magnolia!
Louisiana:The flower of the magnolia tree was approved by the Louisiana General Assembly as the state flower in 1900. In 1941, the Louisiana Native Iris Society was formed, & in 1950 the group proposed legislation to replace the magnolia blossom with the Louisiana iris. In an effort to appease the magnolia supporters, legislation was also proposed to make the magnolia the official state tree. The debate between the iris lovers & the magnolia supporters sometimes grew heated. The iris was referred to as a plant that grows in swamps & one magnolia supporter offered, “Lots of people already think that everyone in Louisiana lives in houses on stilts in swamplands & keeps an alligator as a watchdog.” The iris lovers were not to prevail & the magnolia remains Louisiana’s state flower. However the Louisiana iris was adopted as the state’s wildflower in 1990. 🙂
Mississippi: An election was held in Mississippi in November 1900 to select a State Flower. The Votes were submitted by 23,278 school children. The magnolia won by a landslide, receiving 12,745 votes; the cotton blossom 4,171; & the cape jasmine 2,484. There were also a few votes for other native flowers. However the state’s legislature was slow to act, & didn’t name the Magnolia the state flower until 1952. An interesting note is that Magnolias are both the state flower & the state tree of Mississippi. For generations, Mississippians have sought shade beneath Magnolia trees on antebellum plantations, enjoying the unmistakable, sweet scent of Magnolia flowers wafting through the air. Even today, the trees can be found on preserved & restored plantations, such as Biloxi where magnolias dot the grounds of Beauvoir, the plantation home of confederate president Jefferson Davis.
Below is a pink magnolia bud, white flower, & red seed pod.
The Magnolia evergreen tree is a perennial that can tower between 60-80 feet high & span 30-50 feet across. The hardwoods grow abundantly across the southeastern United States. Magnolia buds appear in late March/early April, & by mid-spring their flowers are in full bloom. The flower is at once showy & elegant. Its cup-like blooms range in color from cream to pink & reach impressive sizes – up to 15 inches across. Each flower is made of numerous waxy petals that provide contrast to the tree’s shiny green foliage. Magnolia flowers produce a strong sweet perfume that many commercial businesses attempt to replicate in their products. Though beautiful & impressive, the life of the flower is a short one with magnolia blooms being pristine for only several days. By autumn the Magnolia flowers have dried up & its petals have fallen. In its place an attractive red seed pod forms that is enjoyed by wildlife.
Magnolias trees have a history that far precedes their selection as the Mississippi & Louisiana state flower. Fossilized specimens of flowers from the Magnolia family date back 95 million years. The bark from one species of Magnolia has been used in traditional Chinese medicine since 1083 to fight dementia, heart disease & cancer.

We have swamp magnolias wild on our Mississippi property, & a huge lemon scented magnolia in the back yard of the New Orleans house, which makes plate sized white flowers. In the front yard there we have the lavender flowered Japanese magnolia, often called the tulip tree by locals. The top picture you posted looks more like the Japanese magnolia, as it blooms before the new leaves come out (it drops all leaves in the fall). Most magnolias are evergreen, so the flowers present on bunches of green, shiny leaves.

When I was homeschooling my son, we were in GA in the winter. He took a science test and got one wrong about the magnolia. He said it was not deciduous. I looked up from my desk and in front of the window was a fully leaved magnolia tree. I had never seen one lose its leaves. So, I had to study up on it and found out that the ones up North are deciduous.

We also have swamp iris to the west of the MS house, planted in an area which stays wet for their growing pleasure. They have purple flowers. We also have some yellow iris in pots; like all iris, they don’t grow well together & the dominant color takes over, which in this case is yellow. In Utah, the blue flag iris eliminated alll the other colors if they were planted together.

“We’ll never know why she did this.”
She did it because she was mentally ill.
Except she left a note, probably explaining why, and what they mean is, “We’ll never let you people know why she did this.”
Most people who die by suicide do not leave a note.
So it really doesn’t matter what her note says.
She told her daughter that she loved her very much and that it wasn’t her fault to “Ask daddy”.
Good grief a burden to lay on her daughter and her husband.
I have compassion for the mentally ill and have been personally touched by suicide.
What is a note written in the throes of madness? A period? An exclamation mark? No really just another question.
I have always loved you and I am now going to turn your home, your sanctuary, your very life into a horrific mad spiral of “What ifs” and “if onlys” it is sheer madness. I love you, but not enough to stay for your 8th grade graduation, your 14th birthday, your first broken heart (matter of fact I’m going t break your heart).
There is no rationalizing suicide. No letter that heals or makes a lightbulb go on in the dark madness that is passed on to survivors left behind.
Madness is madness.

If y’all are planning on coming to NOLA and getting a short term rental ya might wanna rethink it. Seems some British tourists rented a home thru AB&B as their party base. When they came home yesterday they found a group of armed thugs waiting for them – they were roughed up a bit, had jewelry, a Rolex and money stolen but that was it. They left early and returned to England.
Seems that enterprising thugs are targeting known short term rental units knowing the residents have vacay money and generally won’t stick around or come back for trials if the perps are caught.
News also didn’t mention the NOPD’s description of the thugs – an iincreasingly more common happening which raises other questions.

Our Heavenly Father, Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.
Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.
Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump and Mike Pence and their families as they seek to lead America back to You.
Grant us patience, Lord, as the evil ones try to anger us and cause us to fall.
Spread blessings over Israel and Netanyahu.
We humbly ask that You please comfort those who are grieving and in pain.

Our bleeding heart Rat Louisiana governor’s got a slough of problems.
The state has a 6 member board that sets ‘salary’ limits for river pilots. 3 members are appointed by pilots but the other 3 are appointed thru the governor and supposed to be totally unboased and neutral. Seems that the 3 appointed by the gov were recommended to him by…pilots (SURPRISE!!!).
That wasn’t an illegal thing to do, there’s even a process to cover that – the 3 appointees are suppposed to each sign a letter attesting to their neutrality and how they remain detached and unbiased in matters related to their decisions. That would be OK except everyone’s saying they signed the letters but no one can produce a copy (SURPRISE!!!).
Wellllll…someone went back thru the donations to the governor’s campaign war chest and 343 donations totaling over $112,000 were made by the pilots, family members, lawyers or lobbyists (SURPRISE!!!).

Those on Medicare and Medicaid have been low-hanging fruit for Louisiana pols for decades. I remember one pol who owned a medical office – he had vans driving around the low income areas trooling for kids. He’d ID the ones on Medicaid and, if they hadn’t had shots or tests done he’d get them drug in and Medicaid billed. Then we have the entire state system where the ‘retarded’ are farmed out to political pals. The state’s been farming the poor for decades.

100% truth. The democrats bring the mentally incompetent to “vote” in IL . Of course their care giver can go in the booth with them.

Same in Louisiana, even the ones who are so far down they have no idea of who they are or what the world is, their most basic needs have to be attended to by someone paid to give them 24/7 care – but they can magically vote.

Yep. Amazing isn’t it. They live in a sheltered home, they’re cared for by the State, they have a payee yet they are competent enough to help pick the leader of the leader of the free world.

If it were a Democrat ‘leader’ this would go a long way toward explaining it.

We are on a call list for when prisoners escape from MS & LA jails & prisons. The county jail is about 10 miles away, but the call we got was for someone from a LA jail. Trouble is, there is no call when the escapee is captured.

Seems he is still on the run, Eagle where the incident occurred is about 25 miles from here. Lots of woods around. Apparently his brother in law fired a shotgun at him while he was violently attacking his wife the perpetrator then took off running with his gun in his hand.
Sheriff called off the search last night because of darkness. So he basically can be anywhere.
