  6. Mornin all!
Today’s state flower is the bright & sunny California Poppy!

The California Poppy’s botanical name, Eschsholtzia californica, was given by Adelbert Von Chamisso, a naturalist and member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences, who dropped anchor in San Francisco in 1816 in a bay surrounded by hills of the golden flowers. It became the state flower in 1903. Every year April 6 is California Poppy Day, and Governor Wilson proclaimed May 13-18, 1996, Poppy Week. It is also called golden poppy, California sunlight, or cup of gold.

The California Poppy is an ornamental plant flowering in summer, with showy cup-shaped flowers in brilliant shades of red, orange, yellow & occasionally pink with one silky-textured, four petal flower per slender stem. The leaves are used as food or garnish, while the seeds are used in cooking. The flower’s tendency is to open its petals later in the morning than most other wildflowers. The petals close at night (or in cold, windy weather) and open again the following morning, although they may remain closed in cloudy weather. The fruit is a slender, capsule 1 to 3.5 inches long, which splits in two to release numerous small black or dark brown seeds. Flowering occurs from February to September in the northern hemisphere. A mature plant may be as short as just two inches. Horticulturalists have produced numerous cultivars with a range of colors and blossom and stem forms. These typically do not breed true on reseeding.

The hardy seeds for which poppies are known can spread far and wide and take root in sandy, difficult soil where other plants’ seeds may fail. The California Poppy can be either a perennial or annual plant. In mild-winter climates in its native range, these poppies will survive several years, resprouting each fall & reseeding themselves if they are happy. Where winters are cold, the poppy behaves as an annual. It grows wild throughout the state, is drought-resistant, self-seeding, and easy to cultivate. Its native habitat includes California and extends to Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Sonora and northwest Baja California. The California state flower has also spread to South America and Australia. Enjoy them where they grow. If you pick California poppies for a wildflower bouquet, you will be disappointed when the petals almost immediately fall off.

The California Poppy was an important resource for the indigenous people of California, who used it for both food and oil. They also used the pollen as a colorful cosmetic. An interesting article is ‘Seed farm is helping Irvine Ranch Conservancy restore Orange County’s Wildlands’ ~ www dot ocregister dot com/2018/04/06/seed-farm-is-helping-irvine-ranch-conservancy-restore-orange-countys-wildlands/
There is also The Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve located in northern Los Angeles County. At the peak of the blooming season, orange flowers seem to cover all 1,745 acres.

  7. Indiana’s native flower, that did not get approved in the 1990’s over the non-native peony, is the ‘Fire Pink’ which grows in almost the entire eastern half of the country. It does not grow in New England, so I had never seen this very colorful, pretty, small flower.

I can certainly see where it got it’s name with that intense color!

She was our housewarming dog. First year we were here someone dumped her and she found a food bowl at a neighbors who also took care of strays. She didn’t want to stay though, she went back up the road about a quarter mile, to where I presume she was dumped, and waited by the driveway of an abandoned farm and made a nest. One day I just drove up and opened the truck door, she jumped in and has been with us since.

From Johnny Booysen in South Africa—

Dear President Trump and US Citizens,

You, more than anyone else, know what a terrible state the world is in. We know you have your hands full with Iran, N Korea, Syria, Afghanistan, the Middle East, and then still trying to keep an eye on Israel, whilst attempting to heal relations between the USA and Russia among others as well.

We know this is not easy and your European allies are not helping much, Theresa May is a gossiping shit stirrer, Macron is nothing more than a French poodle and Merkel is destroying Europe with her stupid migrant policies. Quite honestly, I think their reactions to recent world events have been a matter of diplomacy rather than an ally to you and the USA. However your resilience, tenacity and ability to deal with multiple problems is just way beyond and far greater than their capabilities.

We also know that despite all the domestic and political squabbles, you are trying to build a better America for all. We salute you and support your sincere efforts. We know that there are many members of congress purposefully acting out of political spitefulness and pettiness to hinder your efforts and derail the process. We as South Africans envy the American citizens for having a leader that is prepared to bend over backwards to make America great again.

We stand together in dismay and awe at the response of the people, they should be celebrating and welcoming the efforts made by your administration, yet, they oppose every effort and endeavour, they should be ashamed of themselves, honestly! Americans wake up!! You have a leader with an aptitude and ability to distinguish right from wrong and he wants to uplift your lifestyle and wellness, not his, YOURS! It’s time to join hands and support him! Put your differences aside and make your country great again!

I think there are more people supporting President Trump than the world can see. I mean, there are more now than when we voted him in. And, there were enough of us then to overcome all the voter fraud that the Obama/Clinton cabal had set up for her win.

Oh, darn. The mama duck was gone with all the babies this morning. I wasn’t surprised because this is what they do. But………..I heard something in the nest just a little while ago and it is another egg hatching. Poor thing, he hasn’t got a chance. Even if he makes it out there is no mama. 😦 She came back last year and was standing outside my door. I had given her bird feed in the last few days while the eggs were hatching because she won’t leave when that starts. So, she came back for more bird fee. But, I doubt she will do that this year. I don’t know what to do except leave it to nature. 😦

Somebody here raised a duck. He sat and watched TV with them and wore a diaper. Unfortunately, the family had to leave and they tried to put him out with the other ducks who just tried to peck him to death. It was sad. I don’t know what happened to him.

Well, he is finally out of the shell. I went out back and could hear the babies by the lake. Maybe mama duck is coming back. I don’t think he can go with them because he won’t have time to get stronger like the others did. I would be more proactive, but we live with these ducks all the time. A mama duck starts with 20 eggs. Anywhere from 3 to 15 hatch. Then one at a time they are grabbed by predators. I was a couple of feet from a mama duck who had 5 babies pulled up tight to her and a hawk swooped down, grabbed one and took off, just like that. It’s a difficult life for ducks.

News is out, Jeff Bezos almost broke his neck getting it out, that ABC cancelled Roseanne.
Seems Roseanne sent out a Tweet that targeted Valerie Jarrett in a way ABC and it’s liberal barnacles thought grossly offensive – so it cancelled the shopw immediately even though Roseanne apologized.
So here we go, ABC kisses the arse of the Left and Obamanauts, cancells Roseanne and dumps a show that draws 25-million viewers. Can’t wait to see Sara Gilber crawl out on stage tomorrow on The Talk and serve penance for breathing the same air as a Hollyork celeb who doesn’t toe the Left line.
Let’s see if Fox grabs the show – though question is if they do will all of the cast members risk the opprobrium of the Hollyork glitterati. Fox could snap up Roseanne, a few million more viewers and continue to pee in the pool of the Big Three networks.

{sigh} I have good and bad news and they are all mixed up together. The last baby finally got out of his shell. But, he looks pretty feeble. The mama duck came back and left all the babies here, probably to go out to eat or something. However, she had 13 babies when she left, she came back with 6. Life is really tough for a duck. It poured for about 20 or 30 min. We got an inch before she came back. My repair wasn’t perfect, but it certainly did the job. It stopped the water from spraying out on the ducks and directed the only leak to the bottom and away from them.

While I was walking my dog, I saw another nest, that is really well built and has 20 or 25 eggs in it. However, when I looked, the eggs were pushed out of the nest. She was sitting on the nest. Maybe she had some that she knew were good. Poor ducks.

There was one mama duck who must have been very strict. She raised 6 or more and they always stayed tight together. I was sure it was her because she used to hang out in the front of the buildings and begged for food. The babies were all grown and still huddled together and followed her around. It was really funny.

I think about the 20th of May is the latest they have every brought their brood to show them off to the world, I’m wondering if the Spring weather knocked them out.

Oh, dear. It is 11:00 PM and the mama duck has never come back. She left the babies about 7:00 PM. They shouldn’t be cold because it is so warm out and they should be pretty safe. This is on the other side of the building from the lake and there are 4 oak trees which are protecting the front yard. So, they are probably safe from the hawk. If she hasn’t come back by morning, I may take them to the mama duck who pushed all the eggs out of her nest. This is so distressing. It doesn’t pay to become attached to these ducks. 😯
