Dear Stella,
I absolutely Love lilacs & the smell takes me back. We transplanted some bushes from my grandparents’ & great-grandparents’ places in Northern Michigan some years back here to Metro Detroit & that older hearty stock is thriving here now. Usually we get blooms down here in April/early May. Then for Memorial Day (in Gaylord) I cut bountiful bouquets for our time there & to take home with me at weekend’s end. Occasionally we venture up to the Tip of the Mit (& extremely rarely to Mackinac Island) & can encounter their later blooms in the 4th of July time frame. Mackinac Island even has a lilac festival & you can find lilac themed merchandise there & at tourist trap Mackinaw City (a couple of such cute items were transplanted downstate with us too.)
Last Summer we transplanted a couple white lilac starts that were from my great-grandparents retirement property in the resort community of Arbutus Beach along Otsego Lake in Gaylord, MI. We really wanted to get some dark lilacs from their historical garden but didn’t find any candidates last year. We found a prolific extremely dark purple bush that extends into an alleyway between a home & a business in town & may see about digging up a couple of the newer shoots from that beauty this upcoming holiday weekend.
I wrote a bit about our transplanting “adventures” & connectivity to family & lilacs here, fyi
Is your little cutie in the picture about to nibble the flowers or just addicted to that heavenly smell? They are great pics–thanks for sharing! 🙂 I’ve heard that this is the coldest spring on record for some 120+ years…& you’ve got the photographic proof of Spring’s unseasonable shyness!

He was eating the lilacs, Valerie! This particular lilac was given to me by my daughter, who lives in the Chicago area. She got it from her neighbor, who has a home in Wisconsin. So my bush (which started out as a tiny shoot in 2002) is from Door County, Wisconsin. She has one as well in her front garden.

I had never actually seen real, live lilacs. So I was very excited when we moved into a house in Upstate NY and it was surrounded by huge lilac bushes. When they bloomed, they were so beautiful and I was so allergic. 😦 I was so glad when they quit.

I had to look up “Steampunk.” LOL! Never heard the word before and no wonder…I’m not much into science fiction reading.

I stumbled on the genre a few years back in the young adult fiction section of the library (pre-screening some material for my then teen daughter) & discovered that I enjoyed the blending of Victoriana & futuristic sci-fi w/ a bit of butt-kicking irreverence thrown in for good measure. On my Pinterest page I have a Steampunk collection of imagery, for fun, fyi…

Agreed. I’ve checked some books out on the genre (it’s hard to nail down & exists in multiple domains like art, literature, music, & fashion) & apparently some people actually consider Steampunk to be part of their persona & dress, decorate, & live accordingly…

Personally, I’m cutting down on reading much of anything political except the simplest scenarios with only a couple of links to follow. I already need a scene breakdown and a cast list of characters to keep anything and everyone straight as it is. Life is too short and by the time past government/politicians/lackeys sins are unraveled I’ll likely be non compos mentis.
This is the plan. Being the information junkie that I am, however, it’ll be a tad difficult to quit cold turkey. LOL! So I’m grateful for blogs like yours, Stella, and the CTH daily thread which balances the serious and less so and often provide havens of peacefulness. And a more peaceful life with less stressful emphasis is what I’m aiming for.

Well, nyet. What say you?
After 14 Years, I’ve had it. I’m leaving Seattle
https://www.seattletimes.com/opinion/after-14-years-ive-had-it-im-leaving-seattle/
I KNEW Seattle was no longer a place for me when I met with Debora Juarez — the District 5 City Council member I had voted for.
Last September, at what I thought was going to be a friendly one-on-one meeting between an elected official and her constituent, I expressed some concerns that were on my mind. I fretted over the deterioration of a city with which I had fallen in love — a city that, despite my 21 trips to Europe, I still believe to be the most beautiful in the world.
I told my council member that Northgate, my home, had seen a noticeable increase in litter and graffiti. To my dismay, she seemed to suggest these issues were someone else’s job, not hers. So, I moved on to a bigger issue: homelessness.
When I first moved to Seattle 14 years ago, to attend the University of Washington, homelessness essentially didn’t exist at Northgate. Though I have never been a victim of or witness to a crime, some of my neighbors have been, and they believe homeless camps are the reason. Additionally, the conditions in such camps are often atrocious — not only are the homeless more likely to be victims of violent crime, they are susceptible to infectious disease, such as the hepatitis A outbreak in San Diego that sickened nearly 500 people and has killed 20.
I believe strongly that it is not compassionate to leave people who are unable or unwilling to care for themselves to suffer and die on the street. Because many (but certainly not all) homeless people struggle with mental illness or drug addiction, I suggested that Seattle find a way to make it easier to provide treatment to these troubled souls — involuntarily, if need be. It could literally save their lives.
Juarez exclaimed, “What is this? Nazi Germany?”
Appalled — in part because my grandparents survived Nazi Germany — I got up and walked out.
As a professional science writer, I’ve certainly grown accustomed to the crass insults that have become routine in our toxic political environment. I just didn’t expect it from a person for whom I voted. But perhaps I shouldn’t have been surprised.
Slowly but surely, Seattle has become an angry place. Councilmember Kshama Sawant called a police shooting a “brutal murder.” She also tweeted that it was “terrible” for a feminist organization to wish that Barbara Bush, on her death, rest in peace. As a congressional candidate, Pramila Jayapal supporters implied that her respectable opponent, Brady Walkinshaw, was a misogynist and racist. And former Mayor Ed Murray, whose pattern of alleged sexual behavior finally caught up with him, remained defiant until the bitter end.
For a city that prides itself on being “anti-Trump,” it is difficult to see how exactly we’re supposed to possess the moral high ground over “The Other Washington.”
…
But stubborn facts and a hurting middle class don’t seem to faze the City Council, which seems far more concerned about issues over which it has zero control — such as climate change and foreign policy — than it does about issues over which it has at least a modicum of control, such as the cost of living, homelessness, crime, traffic and potholes. For our City Council, virtue signaling is more important than governing.
So, my wife and I are heading to the Eastside. We really would prefer to stay in Seattle. But if safe streets, clean sidewalks, an affordable place to live and polite discourse is asking too much, we’ll gladly seek refuge in a city where quality of life and civility still matter.

April 27, is the National Day of Silence for students and teachers alike across the United States. The day has been held every April since 1996 and is an effort to spread awareness about the harassment and bullying of LGBTQ students and symbolically represent how they are silenced. Students and teachers who choose to participate take a day-long vow of silence in solidarity with the Lake Forest High School’s LGBTQ community.
Most teachers wished that ALL students would just take over their mouths, and shut down their cell phones if they were serious, and then the quiet would allow some folks to actually learn something while in school.
MAGA….get rid of liberal attackers of the publicly funded school systems and get a real education system in place where everyone PAYS for the right to learn

OK, just as a time-waster this afternoon, I’ve been looking at fashion. I wanted to find a relatively inexpensive champagne-color silk organza calf-length suit for a bride’s mother to wear to the wedding. I’m finding nothing, of course.
But I did run across many hilarious outfits that somehow got wedged into the category (is the website trying to confuse or cajole me into a purchase?). Now, of course, everyone has different taste when it comes to clothing, but…
