On 21 February 1804, the first recorded steam-hauled railway journey took place as one of Trevithick’s locomotives hauled a train along the 4 ft 4 in (1,321 mm) tramway from the Pen-y-darren ironworks, near Merthyr Tydfil, to Abercynon in South Wales.

    Seen at AoSHQ tonight. So true. When I was in the hospital for flu and pneumonia, the nurses said, just pee in the bottle! I said NO! If I do that I’ll fudge my undies.

    I would amend that to include back and chest pain. Please don’t make me laugh if I have pleurisy or back pain. I got out of the hospital and was at work, just after Chef got out of the hospital. Chef was mad at me because I made him laugh. I told a server lady about the midget girlfriend I had in my 20s. “I was just nuts over her.” Then I added, “We got real creative in bed. One night we built a birdhouse. It was tough getting all the sawdust out of the blankets.”

      If people won’t rise up and act when they are faced with the fact that the state claims the right to murder their children, they never will.

      Worse, the mass indifference to this case, and little Charlie Gard (hoping I remembered his name correctly) shows, strictly my opinion here, that society, most people, are indifferent to the plight of people with a flaw. Babies who cannot live a “normal” life are not worth saving. It says everything about the values of many people in today’s society.

      I do not think poor little Alfie will live but I don’t think it is just and right for the courts to prevent the parents from either taking him home, or to Rome to another hospital.

      The UK has become a police state. How else to describe it? Those poor parents and child. There is no excuse for starving a child to death when reputable assistance has been offered.

        Given what is happening in the U?S. with judges, and what I have seen from the U.K., I am of the opinion it is the judges and legal system we have to fear more than anything.

        Apparently sitting a bench as a judge gives them authority over parents, and too few in this country even consider the limits they are constitutionally bound by. They have a God complex.

        My thoughts aren’t clearly expressed here. I guess I’m combining too much in musing about two countries, babies, and immigration, among other things.

            Yep, I saw that earlier today. Further musing on my part. How many more generations will have any chance to stop this loss of liberty across the world?

            It seems to me when we look at history, both events great and small, wars, depressions, recessions, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, car wrecks, alcoholism, drug abuse, you get the picture, that each American generation is weaker than previous ones. That is taken as a whole, and not reflective of individual people and their rise to the moment.

            Many people suffered and yes, died, during our Great Depression, but by golly, I’d bet here almost everyone of us on this blog had at least one grandparent who told us tales of how they lived, the gardens, the canning, the patches on patches, the clothes made of whatever they could lay hands on. I had four grandparents and a father who made it and went on with life. My mother was born during those years.

            I would not survive such a thing. I don’t have those skills. I don’t even have a small plot where I could grow the tiniest of gardens. I have 14 acres of trees. That’s it. We’d eat what my husband could hunt and I could gather, from the books I have collected about wild foods. The food supplies I have put back would not be sufficient for such a long haul.

            My kids didn’t run wild, but they sure expanded their limits. It was a chore to round them up for supper and bed on summer evenings. I found out when they were grown that there was a quarry miles away they rode bikes to and swam in. We had a pool, but why swim there when you and your pals find a quarry to dive into?

            By the time they were 12 or so, we left them alone for short periods, increasing in duration. They had really hard chores. My husband had them pushing a mower when they were barely taller than the handle. By age 14, as my husband had before them, they worked full time in the summers at the shipyard where he worked. If we raised them that way in today’s world we would be jailed for neglect and abuse. Not to mention that they got their butts tanned for disobedience.

            Yet, as much as I love them, I know that in some ways, because we did struggle to give them a good life and an excellent education, because they never really faced terrible tough times, they are not quite as tough as their dad. And my husband, as much as I love and admire him, has not faced what his grandparents faced in the Depression. He could. He was raised by the very grandmother who kept them in food from a gigantic garden, who took him wandering mountainsides for whole days picking berries, and finding other wild foods. I have no doubt that my husband and at least two of my sons would learn anything they needed to to protect their families and live.

            But I look at America today, and I think of the people and their lives, in comparison to the way it was when we declared Independence, to the generations since then. I look at the liberties we have already lost and how those far back generations would have tarred and feathered public officials.

            In the United Kingdom judges are now legally murdering little children, denying the parents any say in what happens. I have seen cases that disturb me about hospitals going to court over children’s care in this country.

            I believe that we are getting past the point for stopping this. Too many generations have taken the deal you quoted Franklin on in your post. Once people have accustomed themselves to being cattle in a food lot, I don’t see a break out.

            Nothing has really been stolen from us, it has been surrendered by a sleeping and weaker people.

            However, I also believe that God sends great leaders in times of great need. I have said this over and over. I think I have seen it come to pass. But will our President find enough people wanting liberty rather than a burger and a beer?

            Moses had a hell of a time with the Israelites, but he got them out and they became a nation in spite of themselves, because he stayed faithful to God, and never gave up. We’ll see.

              Well, I’ve read that only about 1/3 of the colonists wanted independence from Britain, yet here we are. Who knows what we are capable of until we have to be?

              This country wasn’t built by people swimming in pools (no offense!! nothing against pools!!), it was built by people who took risks and swam in rivers and quarries instead.

        The U.K. and Europe fought WW2 and the Crusades for nothing.

        They abandoned their faith in God, and invited in the Barbarians and Statists and actual Fascists, and gave them all power over them.

        I weep for this kid, but not for Europe and the U.K. They made their bed. They sowed the wind. Now they have to lay in that bed, and reap the whirlwind.

        But for Trump, and a very slim hope, we’re not far behind them. Not far at all.

        England has always been England. Perhaps our bneed for denial coupled with our fascination with English accents has some folks’ eyes dazzled but if you look back at how what passes for a Brit government has abused its own people and those its enslaved for centuries. The mask is just slipping a bit.

          If I was in England I would pay someone to paint a sign on a very hard to get to wall or hang a sign, I’d have it done early in morning of Prince Harry’s wedding, the sign would be as big as possible and along the route where the common plebs line the street cheering the monarchs.

          The sign would be simple

          When will Charlotte marry Mohammad?”

          I honestly despise the royals, because I despise hypocrites. They all brag about their humanitarian efforts and always go for the photo opportunity of them and the po’ folk but they never lifted a finger to save England from the savages of Islam? They never lifted a finger to save Charlie Gard, they are content to talk dessert options as Alfie is murdered by their state?

          I know theoretically the Queen has power but for all intensive purposes the Queen really has no power because she can be overruled by parliament.

          But they have a huge amount of sway over public opinion. The Queen she write a law that send practicers of Sharia out of the country, let parliament veto it and take the blame for the savagery that has come from the poor migrants.

          They can all go to hell.

            The queen doesn’t make law. I do agree that the royal family should speak out against sharia and the treatment of those dear babies. It seems that the royal family is all about preserving the royal family these days.

            The Royals are the last dregs of that European dross that infected the world for centuries. Inbred, diseased, morally separated from the massses of the people they fed off of and as corrupt as anyone’sd ever been.
            They killied millions during centuries of internecine warfare ending in WW I with the monarchs of the three major powers being related. Some 18 million dead in the last Royal war.
            Most of Europe’s done away with their royalty in authoratative roles but they just can’t make that final break, they goota go over to the ex’s house once a week for dinner. In the early 60s in Europe we’d joke about how titles were still passed down and more or less recognized – standing joke would be something to the effect of the bathroom attendant who handed you the little soap and towel probably got the job because he was a duke or baron. Modern, democratic and no longer serfs (OK, that’s debatable) but the Europeans just can’t relegate their royalty to the trash bin of history.

                Yup, one huge interrelated, incestuous killing machine. George V, Tsar Nicholas and Wilhelm were all related and all killing off their subjects in a huge family squabble.
                It’s not hard to see why after WW II the progs decided to end nationalism in Europe, which they saw as an extension of ‘royalism’ but they didn’t ‘off’ them all effectively (except for Russia) and tried to jump directly into democracy with no experience in it. Like a kid learning to swim they had to stay in touch with the shallow end of the pool, playing at democracy while being unable to dump the royalty. Now they have a new kind of benign dictatorship soon to be a caliphate-lite.

                    Yes, but still related. The intermarriages between European families created convoluted relationships and lines of inheritance while family grudges fueled wars where untold millions were killed. Throughout European history monarchs relastyed only by marriage frequently ruled coultries whose language they had to learn.

              I would argue that the British royal family still has an important role in their country. They are a consistent presence, representing their country in an apolitical way, and not changing with the political winds. The royalty is something that many – perhaps most – Brits are proud of. It is part of their history. I personally find British history fascinating, as England and its legal system is the genesis for the United States. I would argue that we took the best and threw away the rest, but English history is still fascinating.

                Agreed, fascinating, especially in how they thought the world was their oyster and sovereign countries’ inhabitants were their personal property.
                They still serve a use – it’s estimated that generate well over a half-billion dollars in tourist revenue a year. The state pays them about $40-million a year and they have about $500-million in personal wealth so I guess serving as a living Disney World diorama of Empire Lost and generating tourist income is a purpose.
                The Brit and German sides of my family came here just after WWII, they’d had it with being ‘subjects’ and wanted to give being ‘persons’ a shot so I was raised with a slightly different twist on European history.

    has anyone NOTICED that there is never any reported RUFUGEES or INVADING ILLEGALS who come here with small babies and children that are in dire need of life help…are they abandoned and left behind, or killed as infants? Only those that come here are to help themselves, and kids are merely incidental…or become pawns for sympathy as refugees.

    I had read a couple of weeks ago that George Soros’ organization was targeting District Attorneys’ races around the country to increase the left’s foothold. I’m pleased to see that even Oregon’s liberal-leaning media outlets (e.g., Local Portland/TV news) are willing to be speaking about it. The language of the piece was very plainly expressed, very similar to what it is in this article.

    Shedding light on a subject has limited value if the audience is unwilling or unable to THINK – but at least they’re naming it.

      I can imagine the radio chatter as they put their trucks in place – seeing how close together they put them makes me choke up – these are fine, fine people, doing what they can with the tools at hand – in this case, their great big trucks. Generally speaking, truckers are such a good lot. ((Hugs to truckers – generally speaking!))

        I think I heard on tv that the truckers stayed in place for four hours. Having a son who is an owner operator, I can tell you that they might have surrendered a huge portion of their week’s earnings. Each delivery is scheduled, and throwing something off means many customers will refuse to unload a trucker who is late for his appointment. He might not get unloaded until the next day. This means all his future loads for the week may have to be cancelled or rescheduled.

        It cost them some money to make that choice. It’s a tough and lonely life. I pray for them often.

          Yes – all of that, Menagerie. Thank you for describing the details.

          One of the things I thought of is the process/conversation of each of them contacting their dispatchers to explain what was going on, and either “getting permission” to help or, perhaps, risk losing their job. Perhaps each of them WAS an owner/operator, in which case all of the loss was borne personally, as you describe.

          It COST them.

    I just heard that Bill Cosby has been found guilty. It brought tears to my eyes. I am not sorry he was found guilty………..I am sorry he did it, and I believe he did.

      His sociopathic conduct will go into history as a supreme example of what rape is. It’s never about sexual pleasure. It’s about controlling other people, humiliating them, keeping them captive and confused and ashamed.

      His fame alone guaranteed there would be countless women more than willing to have relations with him. But this fact wasn’t enough for him. His sick rapist’s mind demanded more.

      Who would have thought! He had it all…a fine education, a successful career and incredible fame because of his immense talent, respect of the public, money, a beautiful wife. None of that was enough, and, indeed, isn’t enough for anyone…he’s not alone in that.

      I never once heard him speak of God. Therein lies his problem…a turning away from God and what He intends for each individual…Galatians 5:22-25 (J.B. Phillips New Testament):

      “The Spirit, however, produces in human life fruits such as these: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, fidelity, tolerance and self-control—and no law exists against any of them. Those who belong to Christ have crucified their old nature with all that it loved and lusted for. If our lives are centered in the Spirit, let us be guided by the Spirit.”

    I just heard a noise at my sliding glass door. It sounded like the squirrel who likes to jump onto the screen and hang on. I guess he is checking out what is inside. Anyway, I got up to check, and he was gone, but there was a hawk sitting just a couple of feet out from the door on my swing. They are so used to being around people here.

      Along with Peggy Lee, Ella Fitzgerald was my Dad’s favorite singer. Mine, too.

      A story about Ella…in Depression era mid-30s Ella was orphaned and became a ward of New York state. She had no decent clothing or hairstyle for such a venture, but she and a couple of girlfriends decided to attend an Amateur Night at the Apollo…a major venue in Harlem.

      Amateurs were invited to put their names in for a drawing to be onstage. Amazingly, her name was selected. Once up on the stage she was frightened and sang a few bars terribly. The audience was expected to be tough, and they started to jeer. The host/announcer quieted the room, allowed Ella to compose herself, then she proceeded to win everyone over and won the contest.

      In a couple of years she was touring with the Chick Webb Band and the rest is history.

    Our Heavenly Father, Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.

    Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.

    Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump and Mike Pence and their families as they seek to lead America back to You.

    Grant us patience, Lord, as the evil ones try to anger us and cause us to fall.
    Spread blessings over Israel and Netanyahu.

    We humbly ask that You please comfort those who are grieving and in pain.
    Thank you Father, for Your Love and the gift of Life.

    My paternal great grandmother, and my paternal grandmother – a little girl at the time, were in their ancient village east of Lake Van (in what is now Turkey) going about their daily chores when they heard blood curdling screams, horses, and gunfire.

    My great grandmother quickly realized the rumors were true, and that the cowardly savages called Turkish ‘soldiers’ had now come to kill them. She hid my grandmother and herself.

    They saw their entire family sadistically slaughtered, along with their entire village. During the slaughter, women and little girls were raped by maniacally laughing Turks.

    No-one could fight back: the old single-shot firearms they had used to hunt for game they traded for goods and to supplement what they grew in the rocky soil had been confiscated weeks ago by Turkish police.

    Their men of military age had been conscripted into the Turkish army or arrested, and unbeknownst to them at the time, they had then been killed.

    Their ‘crime:’ Being Christians.

    My great grandmother and grandmother hid for hours after the Turks left, terrified of leaving their hiding place.

    Finally, after nightfall, my great grandmother led my little grandmother away, heading east, toward the border of Armenia, with 90 miles and Mount Ararat between them and safety.

    With no food and only what little water they found that melted from Ararat’s snow caps into the arid volcanic alluvial plain, they set off the only way my great grandmother knew to escape the certain, horrific torture and death behind them.

    They stayed off main roads and under cover of brush when they could find it. If they found anything edible, my great grandmother gave it to my grandmother. My great grandmother ate something only if she thought my grandmother had enough. That meant my great grandmother didn’t eat a bite, even of grass, for days at a time.

    They finally found and arrived at Etchmiadzin, the ancient seat of the Armenian Church since 301 AD, about 5 miles west of the capitol city of Yerevan.

    My great grandmother used the last spark of strength she had left to hand my grandmother to the deaconesses of the Church.

    Having accomplished her life’s last, most important undertaking, she collapsed, and never woke up again in this world.

    She rests at God’s side.
