Kirkpatrick MacMillan (1812-1878), a blacksmith from Dumfriesshire, Scotland, invented the first bicycle with foot pedals in the 1830 to 1840’s, but he never patented it and his idea did not catch on locally.
A French father-and-son team of carriage-makers, Pierre and Ernest Michaux, invented an improved bicycle in the 1860’s. Many early bicycles (called velocipedes, meaning “fast foot,” or, more descriptively, “bone shakers”) had huge front wheels – it was thought that the bigger the wheel, the faster you could go. Early tires were wooden – metal tires were an improvement, and solid rubber tires were added later. A chain with sprockets was added to the bicycle in the 1880’s; this was called the “safety bicycle.” Air-filled tires were also added in the 1880’s.

I watched a public forum tonight of our Republican Governor candidates. Abortion was one of the topics, one of the candidates said he was pro-life but we had to follow the law. He used Romans 13:1 as to why Christians were to obey the law of the land or face damnation.
I’ve never quite understood why Christians use that as an excuse we should sanction murder of babies.
My personal opinion is that it’s a cop out.

One of the other candidates pointed out the apostles in the Bible and pointed out the Dred Scott case as an example of SCOTUS being just as wrong as they are about unborn babies.
How they’re 1/3 of our government and are supposed to interpret law not make law.

After what I’ve witnessed from teachers around here nothing surprises me.
We’ve had numerous teachers molesting kids in this state, there’s no telling how many who have done stuff that has been covered up.

I agree with my daughter, even if you only based your decision on the number of teachers who have been charged with molesting children it would be enough to not send your child to public school.

I’m praying my DD wakes up about that. I have begged her to homeschool, but her husband doesn’t agree. 😦 Fortunately, our little guy is only two, so I’m hopeful she’ll change her mind.

My daughter started talking about it when she was pregnant with the little man. She kept going back and forth, she looked into private schools and then she started talking to those who homeschool.

It’s a political decision to try not to offend either side which ends up offending both. Pro-life politicians need to be in touch with pro-life groups which work compassionately with mothers, both those who have chosen life for their babies and those who don’t. And if the politician is a Christian, he needs to support groups such as 40 Days For Life unashamedly. If he loses office because of his stand, then so be it.
Yes, we should obey the laws of our nation. But the “right” to abortion also needs to be understood and outed as a leftist action to destroy the family AND that there is nothing in the Constitution which gives people the right to take human life, born and unborn. The Roe v. Wade decision was phony, based on a phony case.
Wishy-washy doesn’t cut it.

“making children walk through the fire” is how the Bible describes the Israelites burning their children alive to sacrifice them to idols. And Israel was punished for it severely. Does this dumbkopf think God is going to be more forgiving because here in America we merely dismember children on the altar of “choice ” and “convenience ” rather than burn them alive in bronze statues?

IMHO, he has not studied the Bible nor has he studied the history of our country.

Petula Dvorak is a left wing columnist for the WaPo. Today she charged, “sleepy eyes” is a known Nazi anti-semitic slur and Trump’s calling F. Chuck that was of a piece with his anti-Semitism.
I’ve written this to the editors: My father was an immigrant from a Polish village . All of his family who remained there were wiped out in the Holocaust. I was an attorney for the Department of Justice’s OSI which investigated those who cooperated with the Nazis and litigated to get them denaturalized and deported. I have read lots of reports of the events, worked with translators and historians, interviewed many witnesses to the events.. Not once have I come across “sleepy eyes” as a an anti-Semitic slur. while your readers may like to have confirmation of their bias against the president–that he is, among other things, anti-Semitic–the facts do not sustain this. Indeed, a much better case can be made against his predecessor who did so much to aid the Iranian mullahs who call every day for the destruction of Israel and whose inner circle and many of whose long time associates made no real effort to hide this.
Petula is regularly over the line, but this time, I feel compelled to respond to her. It’s columns like these that explain why you have lost any credibility.

Trump was a good friend of my old employer, Harry and Leona Helmsley. Harry and Leona were not only Jewish NYC real estate developers but earned the emnity of numerous Palm Beach WASPS when the bought the Towers and broke a cardinal Palm Beach rule: no Jews live on the island, a rule Trump again busted when he bought Mar a Lago and (gasp!) allowed Jews to join, play golf and stay in the condos.
I’m wondering if this isn’t more Bozos bull in his battle against Trump? As amateurish, poorly thought out and unprofessional (and that’s saying a lot for the WaPo) as the article is it just fans the fire for those who don’t like Trump and are willing to chew on any sprig of fake news Bozos will toss out there.

Never gave me any problems but then I did what I was paid to do. I can tell you this, her staff at the Towrers was robbing her blind from the kitchen to the bar to the furniture and from what I’m told that ain’t unusual in the hotel biznezz.
I’ve told this one before but nextdoor: About ten years cafter I left her employment I attended a conference in Orlando that was held in the Helmsley Hotel there. Czarina accompanied me as she went to college there and wanted to see some of her old haunts.
As I hecked in I told the desk clerk that I’d worked for the Helmsleys in Palm Beach some years back and here I was now stasying in one of their hotels. I just mentioned it in passing but the clerk told the manager and for whatever reason he called New York. We were at dinner when the manager found us and said Ms Helmsley had placed a hotel limo at Czarinas disposal and each day we were there she had free passes to Disney – the limo would pick her up and drop her off.
Not exactly who the press portrayed her tp be. She just demanded that if you take the Queen’s shilling you do the Queen’s work.

Gawd…don’t wanna sound like a prog here but it was the early 70s and she was a powerrful, driven and focused businesswoman who rankled the press and the NYC OldBoy’s club. Harry had real estate but she built her real estate/hotel empire on her own and ran it on her own.
Her being in the position she was she made some enemies – she didn’t shy from doing that. She and Trump even went sideways for a while – there was a story about him filling the hood on her coat with red wine at a dinner so that when sge put her hood up…
I was told they reconciled – when you have that much power you tend to forgive and forget if you want to limit problems. There was even an attempt to murder her and Harry in the Towers, they survived but it was a close call for her. Yup, enemies.

Yesterday my son and a friend were fishing in the Willamette River in Portland, near/under the Sellwood Bridge. Looking “the other way”, they suddenly jerked around when they heard a huge impact/splash about 25 feet from their boat, just off the opposite side of the bridge.
A man had jumped.Another boat was in a similar position, very near, I’m grateful that they didn’t actually see the whole event. Obviously, if they had seen him prior to the jump, they would have attempted intervention, but apparently no one saw it because he was off the bridge and in the water before anyone was aware at all.
He said that the emergency response/water rescue units were quick on the scene, fire department, etc. up to and including Coast Guard. The body immediately went deep and never came back up, which he said is not unusual. He also told me that in the last decade or so, the Portland news media has stopped reporting the bridge suicides. There are many of them every year, and the number goes up when the media coverage is heavy.
Sad business.

Hi all! Busy busy. Home and school. I got the results on kiddo. New allergy to grasses and the culprit is in the backyard. Have to hire someone to dig out the big non natives since I am allergic too. The flonase may be affecting his growth rate too so I have to follow up on that.
Kiddo’s actual problem apparently is very swollen adenoids. So have to see ENT. I have no idea if he has to be scoped and have surgery or what they do. Its always scary with kids surgery. Cross that bridge when its time.

had my tonsils and adenoids removed when 6 years old, as did my older brother at 8 yo.
allergies are tough on kids…we had food allergies, dust and dander allergies, the whole deal. outgrew some…others came in later….spring is terrible

I just scheduled appt. We either had to wait until the end of August or drive 65 miles to main clinic on Saturday morning. Ugh. I have a long early day Saturday….. but at least he will be evaluated by pediatric specialist.
I had my tonsils out at 4. I was always sick, even after. You are right its no fun. I just hope if they say surgery its a good dr and he handles it well.

Sometimes I post good musics from the YouTube, just so I can watch it in full-screen, since my browser (Brave), or YouTube itself, won’t let me at the actual YouTube site. I’m guessing it’s because YouTube is full of SJWs and they hate the guy who made Brave, because they’re supposed to, (because the inventor of Javascript and Mozilla got hounded out of his job at Mozilla for donating $200 to Prop 8 in CA, and that’s thoughtcrime) and so you can’t go full-screen at their site while using this browser.
I done found a work-around, though. If I post it here, I can go full-screen!
Just not at YouTube itself. I’m sure it’s just a coincidence.
Basically, using Brave, you cannot make the “full-screen” button do anything at all.
Posting a video here? The “full-screen” button does what it says it does.
