A SHOCKING LIKENESS: PHOTOGRAPHY AND DEATH IN THE CIVIL WAR
Photography was invented in 1839, and became popular rather quickly. The first type of photograph that was widely available was the daguerreotype: the photosensitive chemicals were thinly spread over a small copper plate, coated in silver.

Sad thing was that the majority of ‘plates’ taken during the Civil War were lost or destroyed. One source moaned that so little was thought of the plates that many were cleaned and used for glazing in hothouses.

      • Lucille says:

How awful! Matthew Brady’s works are the ones I’m most familiar with. He likely did a better job of protecting his plates…or had a good PR agent to make him popular enough that destroying them would be like throwing money away. LOL!

When my parents were newlyweds they had to live with my father’s parents until they could afford a place of their own. One day my mother came into the living room to discover my grandfather throwing Civil War family photos into the fire place. Surprised she asked him why he was doing that and he said no one would want those old things! None of them could be salvaged but she did manage to retrieve a photo of my grandfather with his Arkansas militia group probably from around 1900.

It’s odd that my grandfather did that because he wasn’t unsentimental about family. Every year he would go to visit those who lived in Arizona or Texas or Arkansas and via letters always kept up on family goings-on.

Well, you know I have been remarking how great it is to order online at Walmart and then just go and they put the order in the car. I placed my order on Sat. and was supposed to pick it up Sun. They called and said there was a computer glitch and the order was lost, so I had to re-place the order and wait until Mon. Not a big problem, but, the good news is they took $15 off my next order. Not bad. I am so grateful to have this service since I have had a problem walking with my left knee swelling.

Walmart has terrific customer relations, service and 2-day delivery on orders of $35 or more. If the wrong item is sent I simply call them and they will re-issue the correct item, asking me to take the incorrect one to the local Walmart. When I inform them I have no private way to do that and must take a taxi to the tune of $30 RT (our city having virtually no public transportation), they just tell me to keep the item without charge.

Recently I ordered something to use as a hostess gift. When I received it, another pair of the same item was included in the box. After explaining the transpo problem to customer service, once again they said just to keep the extras since they were sale items and less than $10. If it had been a more expensive item, they probably would have sent me a UPS return sticker, though I don’t know that.

Now, they had no way of knowing if I was lying and just trying to get extra product without paying for it. They trusted me. I find that rather amazing.

I remember seeing bits of his trial covered on the local news, but never really paid a lot of attention. A friend asked me to sign a petition for him and sent me links to trial documents and a report by forensic experts detailing how flawed the DNA was. Then I watched the report by Michelle Malkin. This is kind of scary how easily touch DNA is spread. I can also easily see how OKC would throw the BLM a sacrificial lamb to prevent race riots. OKC is a cesspool of progressives and thugs.

Usually, I’m on the other side and say that a lot of people are sitting in prison who say they didn’t do it, but I have serious doubts this young man did do it.

I can’t imagine losing your life partner after 73 years, no matter how rocky life was or wasn’t along the way. I think he may have been the weaker one in this partnership, anyway. From what I’ve read, he was a bit of a mama’s boy, and his wife continued that role in his life.

My father in law was one of the strongest, toughest men I’ve ever known, physically and mentally. If you went to visit his mother she always had at least a dozen home made treats to offer. Cakes, pies, cookies, candies, even doughnuts.

There was always one thing off limits, you could never even wheedle a bite. Every day she made one special treat for my father in law, and no one ever got his dessert first.

So, maybe he was a bit of a mama’s boy too. But man was he ever one of the strongest men I’ve known. When his wife, my mother in law, died, his will to live was instantly gone. He lived on Jack Daniels and chain smoked cigarettes until he didn’t live. Such a bitter loss to our family. My boys were in their early teens, and they loved and admired him, and were at an age where they wanted to spend time with him. They were particularly hurt by his withdrawal from life.

Not the same thing at all as what the Bush family is going through, but it reminded me of my father in law for some reason.

    Who saved the whales?
At Ace of Spades, Oregon Muse asks,
Who is really responsible for saving the whales?

    a) GreenPeace
    b) a random assortment of smelly hippie protestors.
    c) international “law”
    d) John D. Rockefeller

The answer is, of course, (d) John D. Rockefeller:

Whale oil provided the lighting to read the breakthrough novel of 1870, the story of Captain Nemo in 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea. That was also the year of the foundation of Standard Oil. The result of that foundation is that we didn’t hunt the whales to extinction, but instead turned to kerosene to light the latter part of the 19th century, moving to electricity only in the 20th.

It really isn’t hyperbole to insist that John D. Rockefeller saved the whales by his making mineral oil products so much cheaper than the cetacean-derived equivalent.
    The lesson is obvious:

We need to be as viciously capitalist and free market as we can to save the planet.

They need to go back. Our values and mores are incompatible, and always will be.

Think about how much the Left and the Progressives and the Cucks love the fact that all the African NATIONS kicked out the French, the English, and the Dutch. Same with India. Same with Hong Kong.

Why did they hold this position? Are they saying that they understand that a Nation is allowed to decide who gets to live there? (Hi, Japan! Good for you!)

And yet they want all Western Nations to be colonized by people we’re not allowed to criticize, and who openly declare their intent to colonize and terrorize.

When’s the last time there was war within Poland, or within Japan?

Long time ago. Because they’re intelligent and care about their culture.

Most of the time I like my state, these past few years not so much. I have been so disgusted with Republicans in OKC between them voting like a pack of progressives to all of their affairs and dirty deeds. Dirty deeds that they use taxpayers’ money to settle out of court.
Then there’s been one teacher after the other who has been arrested for raping students. One after the other suspended for showing porn to kids.
Then the schools who have been having outside groups come in and teach kids how to masturbate and have anal sex safely. After it was found out about one school then it came out that at least 5 other districts were using the same outside group. Who knows what’s being taught in the rest of them?
Then all the people who suddenly started paying attention the past year to see that Mary Fallin isn’t who and what they thought she was. Heck, I tried to tell anyone who would listen who and what she was before she was elected the first time. I’m so glad President Trump was able to see what she is and didn’t give her a job in his administration.
Then all the people who have suddenly realized our U.S. Representative uses his business to campaign and uses his position to grow his business. I was complaining about all of that before his first term was over.
Then we had the illegal teacher strike that they called a walkout because the districts colluded with the teachers. Then I witnessed our local media covering for them and coverage being all one sided. Then after their strike cost taxpayers $115,000 a day and weakened our Highway Patrol forcing them to also dip into their emergency budget they thanked the teachers for what they did.

Then all the parents who moaned and complained until they opened the school doors and right back they sent their children and were so happy to be rid of them.

I’m not too happy with my state right now or the people in it. Frankly, I’m pretty disgusted and sick of the ignorance.
