I brought in a vaseful of daffodils a couple of days ago, tucked with a couple of camillias. So bright and beautiful. I knew there was more chill, wet, windy weather (today’s serving) coming and wanted to enjoy them at a little closer range.

One of Allen Moore’s dogs sleeping in the sun. Aliy’s husband Allen is running their “B Team”, the young dogs, usually 2 year olds. For most, this is their first Iditarod. His goal is only to teach them the trail and its routines, and to see that they have a good time. He is not trying to win, or make the top 10. Aliy is doing that with the A Team. Allen ran the A Team on the Yukon Quest, the other 1,000 mile sled dog race, and he won last month. Good dogs!

Thanks so much for posting this clip, lovely! ADN is such a liberal rag (they hate President Trump and Sarah Palin) that I forget to look at their Iditarod coverage, which is decent. And their vids are public access, which the Iditarod Insider’s are not. I tried to post one of Aliy here, just to see, but didn’t work. I wish the clip identified which team it is.
Interesting that the musher is ony running 1 dog in swing position, right behind the leaders. The leaders and the swing dogs are the “front end” of the team; essentially the steering wheel. Usually there are 4 dogs in the front end, with all 4 being capable of leading and all 4 well trained to “Gee” and “Haw” (right and left). Some people are amazed to learn that there is no reins to control the team, only voice commands yelled from the back. If the musher yells GEE and the dogs don’t go to the right, the only control the musher has is to stand on the brake to stop them, then give the command again. If the leaders don’t like the looks of where you are asking them to go (like into open water, or to leave an established trail to go cross country with no trail), it can take some doing to make them do it. Dogs who are running the Iditarod or the Quest are the Olympians of sled dogs. Very highly trained to command, and very well conditioned, with many, many, many trail miles under their paws.
Aliy is currently in 10th position. But 4 of the 9 teams in front of her have not done their 24, and she has. So positions will change in the next 12 hours once all teams are back on the same timeframe. The Norweigen guy, Joar Ulsom, still holds the lead after his daunting move to go all the way to the midpoint before taking his 24. The clips of him coming in to the Iditarod checkpoint showed his team pretty lively still, and he looked tired but not wasted. He can leave about 9 pm tonight, so we will see then what position he is actually in. There are a lot of miles of bad trail ahead.
There was a short clip of Aliy and the team leaving Takotna after the 24, and all looked very rested and ready to move. She passed Ophir before 6 am and is now on the long haul to Iditarod, about a 10 hour run through deep snow. Three other teams are running right with her, including one of my two young friends from Bethel, Pete Kaiser. Pete is an accomplished young musher who won this year’s and last year’s Kuskokwim 300. He has a fire in the belly to make his mark in Iditarod, and the skill to do it. This is his 9th Iditarod, and in 4 of the previous 8 he had a top 10 finish, and 3 of those were top 5. He is definitely a contender.
Go Aliy! Go Aliy! GO ALIY!!

Count me among those amazed to learn that, wow! That is remarkable, the Olympians of dogs indeed!
how exciting that you know so many of the races and have an emotional investment in them, so much fun.
Thanks for sharing all your knowledge, I’ve been chatting about the Iditarod with a friend and I’ll bet he does’t know there are no reigns and will be really surprised to find out also. I have him rooting for Aliy!

my older son went to a military prep school in Indiana. at that time, smoking among adults was common, but the school was against it….so they established a “smoking room” which was the only place on campus where smoking was allowed….it was a windowless, dark dingy room with an automatic closing door, where if you really needed to smoke, you were not going to enjoy it.

Years ago, I was put in a small room with a lot of people who smoked constantly. The desks were butted up against each other and it was even hard to get out when you needed to leave. Anyway, they started shutting the door and locking it at night. One morning when we came in, the heaviest smoker complained that the room stunk. It was good I had pretty good control, because I wanted to throttle her.

Remember the prog’s ‘needle parks’, especially Zurich’s? We have tried methadone here with some success but I remember addicts who’d go out and get their methadone in the morning to make their heroin use less expensive. Switzerland had some success in diverting junkies on to methadone and state-prescribed treatment but they were about it in the ‘success’ column.
I can see buying maybe allowing serial murderers to just seriously maim while they are working up the internal fortitude to seek treatment. Buying hookers for rapists…there’s no end to the possibilities for redemption thru enablement. Should make the Kennedy family jumpn with joy.

Once upon a time society, formed and held together by decent and moral people for the most part, forced people to choose between their vices and a welcome place in that society. Now we are forcing society down to the lowest common denominator.
What’s next? Should I not be allowed to have a house that looks like a home because someone else lives in a carbboard box? Perhaps we should just build a hive next to dumpsters and all live there.

Good Morning most Eggsellent Purveyor of Lively Breakfasts – Thank you Nyet! Good Morning everyone!
“It’s different and bold. It stands out amongst a blank world of black, white, and gray. Orange is the early morning sun stretching across the sky and the color of a burning ember standing tall in the middle of a beach bonfire. It’s leaves in the fall, carrots in Nana’s vegetable soup on a cold winter day, tulips in the spring, and the ladybugs in the middle of the grassy park on a hot summer afternoon. Orange is life. It’s unexpected but beautiful.”~ Aly Martinez, Stolen Course

Okay, you made me stop for a moment and think about my very least favorite color (edging out pink only by a hair) in a different light for a moment. Without orange, fall would be much less spectacular, and even orange looks good on tulips. And I have some great pictures of sunsets featuring oranges, yellows, pink, and purples.
I do, however, retain my right to loathe orange in any setting other than one directly provided by nature. 😀

My mother, in her middle to late 40’s almost always chose navy or black because she was slightly overweight and thought that was slimming. She had beautiful white hair. I was in my late teens and shopping with her card when I came across this bright orange A-line dress with a skirt that was slightly full at the bottom. The only reason she kept it was because I had picked it out for her. But, she wore it to work finally one day, and the Pres. of the college she worked for passed her office and said “hi”, then turned around to come back and tell her how nice she looked. She got so many compliments that day that she started wearing brighter colored clothes.

Yes, we had two girls have babies today, one had twin girls and the other had a boy. He was no fun and wasn’t for sure we were going to get him out. We all had a hand trying to get him pulled.
It was pretty traumatic and painful for mom and at one point we thought we were going to lose them both.
She’ll have to be watched pretty close over the next few days because she tore pretty good, but so far they both seem to be doing good. I was afraid she would be another one to reject it because of what she went through, but she’s being an excellent mama.

Good morning folks, have a beautiful day, I know it isn’t Christmas but I’ve been listening to this one any how. Phenomenal.

The Royal Mile of Edinburgh! The castle is at the top and Holyrood Palace is at the lower end. There is a plaque in the cobblestones that mark where the public gallows once stood. Lots of little alley and pathways leading off to interesting places. There is also the Underground where the poorest lived. They even found walled up rooms full of Black Death victims. Very spooky places at night!
TY, Stella for the memories this week.

How to Hogg the spotlight. Right there, folks, CNN’s journalistic honesty plainly shows where they pulled that response out of.

G’Day, WeeWeed! Exploitation is an ugly thing.
He’s working toward a career in the public eye…a talking head for CNN, an actor, maybe politician. Pretty difficult under most circumstances. It will be a rude awakening when they’re through with him.

It’s the same thing, as I understand it. Fresh water rather than sea water, but with all of the air squeezed out of it.

Hi – Thanks for asking! Just got internet back! Many – at one point 300,000 – are without power. We only lost power for 3 hours. We sacrificed and put in a whole house generator and large propane tank. We lose internet, phone, TV, but not power. Have not checked out weather forecast yet. It will change by tonight anyway. Hope things are well with you 🙂

An excellent Mississippi winter day. Sun with a few mares’ tail clouds, 60’s. Got good things done outside. More of the same tomorrow, then rain again all weekend. Good thing about retirement is that you get weekends on weekdays.

BTW – DH informed me upom coming inside after snowiblowing & shoveling for hours, it was 16″, not 12″ inches of heavy, wet snow.Gotta get it right when you’re the one doing the work! 😉

I think I walked about 100 miles today walking from one end of the pasture to the other because two different goats were having babies on opposite ends, does that mean I’m going to turn green? 🙂

Friend of mine weighed about 270 and his cholesterol levels were about the same. He joined a walking club and melted off the pounds by eliminating fried foods and walking 6 miles a day.
He’s about 170 now, less than when he got out of the Marine Corp in his 20s about 40 years ago, and his cholesterol levels are way down, too.

Years ago, I read a story about a woman who weighed over 300 lbs. She started walking, which she could barely do, and passed by a school yard on the way. The kids harassed her something awful, calling her names and making fun of her. But, she kept it up. Eventually as it was obvious she was losing a lot of weight they started to cheer her on. She just kept walking and lost all she wanted to. Neat story.

Hi all 🙂 Just got internet back! About a foot of wet, heavy snow wiped out many people.
Today’s painting by Joseph Farquharson is “On the Dee”. I think it may be from his property. I do not know. He loved it there. It seems it must have been a large painting, because the horse and rider is so small. I really like how the sky is done, and the solitude of horse & rider shown.
Have great day everyone! 🙂

One of the lead stories on tonite’s local news – two black teenager, aged 14 an 15, were spotted in a stolen car were spotted at about 0-dark-30 by sheriff’s deputies. They refused to stop and deputies entered into pursuit. Teens entered the access road to the ferry terminal I took daily for some twenty years, lost control of their vehicle and crashed into the landing’s barriers. 14 year old driver jumped out, ran down the ferry dock and jumped into the Mississippi.
The river’s now at just about flood height, Corps is opening some of the bays of the Bonnie Carrie Spillway, diverting some of the flood water from the river to Lake Pontchartrain and taking the strain off of the city’s levees. The amount of water flowing thru the city is still immense, huge ocean going ships have to caaaaaarefully tack thru the city transiting up and down stream,. Earlier this week huge barge got caught in the current, got swept away and took out 20 feet of dock at Governor Nicholls street. Anyway, they’re looking for the 14 year old’s body – Corps keeps maps of where floaters might be found (a Corps corpse chart) so they’ll be looking a goodly way downstream. Waiting for city asctivists to complain that the officer didn’t jump in and try to save the kid. Corps would have been looking for two corpses, we’ve seen folks drown due to currents in the river in far cal;mer water runs.

OMG I just took my little doggie for a walk and I had put on a warm vest since it is cooler today. I came back pretty quickly because I got cold. It turns out it was 57*, freezing as my Floridian friends would say, or warm as you people who live in snow country would say.

lilbirdee12’s prayer:
Our Heavenly Father, Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.
Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.
Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump and Mike Pence and their families as they seek to lead America back to You.
Grant us patience, Lord, as the evil ones try to anger us and cause us to fall.
Spread blessings over Israel and Netanyahu.
We humbly ask that You please comfort those who are grieving and in pain.
Thank you Father, for Your Love and the gift of Life.
In Jesus name, we pray. Amen.

Goodness, who broke into my apartment and took a pic of my speaker?
Never mind. Mine’s bigger. And waterproof up to 1m.
And yes, it has microphones. And yes, it listens constantly, if you have it connected to The Goolag, and if it’s on. So does your phone. And your laptop. And whatever other strange devices you let into your home. At this point I’m like “What, me worry?”
Never heard a better speaker for its size.
