I shuddered, and drank my coffee, leaning back in my chair to gaze out across pine tops furry with gold towards the sparkling sea, and surrendering myself to the dreamlike feeling that marks the start of a holiday in a place like this when one is tired, and has been transported overnight from the April chill of England to the sunlight of a magic island in the Ionian Sea.

Good morning, lovely! Here in the Panhandle it’s 42 degrees and slightly raining…so it’s doable insofar as having to go out in inclement weather.
On the other hand, it’s still summer in the southern hemisphere and 76 degrees in Sydney, Australia today.

The kiddo gets a packet of homework each month, roughly 30 pages of writing, math, connect the dots type of things. Now adding in the common core packet of critical thinking(cough) which requires him to choose from a list of 30 tasks and fill in half a page of corresponding work. At 4 years old. For instance, the easiest one is go to the library, get a book, and draw the story.
I sat him down this afternoon and did 14 pages of his regular work but I feel resistant to the common core for good reason. Im going to get that stuff done asap but I hope we can do better by the kids quickly. I might just homeschool yet but will try kindergarten at least.
BTW, when I asked him what he wanted to read at bedtime (we normally read 2-3 books), he happily handed me his pocket Constitution and said, “Only the first chapter!” I read a couple quotes and explained them and then read a regular story. He told me to mark the book and read the Declaration of Independence the next time. 😄😁😁😁🙂👼👼👼

I recommend this web site for an intro for yourself.
I substitute at High School for freshmen and ESL learners in remedial math getting ready for alg, geometry, and then calculus…..and everyone hates math because they have been told it sucks and is hard….but they have to have real world examples of stuff explained by someone that can be enthusiastic about learning, not about math in particular.

I get really aggravated at people who say they can’t learn math. Does anyone ever say they can’t learn English or History?
That is complete bull crap. Either you don’t want to learn math, or you’ve had some crappy teachers (still an excuse IMO) or both. What we want to learn we can, even if we have to pursue additional learning on our own.
What percentage of people do you think say they don’t need to know geometry or algebra, and yet go to buy paint or wallpaper and cannot figure out how much they need? How about even contractors who used to tell me how many square feet was in a house they wanted to buy shingles or siding for. And could not understand why that number was totally irrelevant to me in figuring out how much product they needed.
Or people, sorry, women especially, who got really mad at me when they asked me to calculate how many bags of concrete they needed for a 10 x 10 patio and I asked them how thick the concrete would be. “Why would you need to know that?” they would scornfully ask.
Or my all time favorite when ordering window screens and the customer would need a screen just a little larger than say 20 3/8, so I would suggest 20 3/4. They would inform me that 3/8 is larger than 3/4, and many would refuse to believe me when I showed them on a tape measure. These were not uneducated people. Frequently it would be business people dressed very well, who used very proper language and were obviously very well educated other than mathematics.
Further, only a couple more employees could calculate board feet, lengths for step stringers or down rods for ceiling fans, all very simple formulas. Though I do comsider myself pretty good at math, and I took lots of it in college, what I had to deal with when I worked at Home Depot, aside from the management end of it, where I got into profit and loss, accounting, etc., should have been something virtually everyone knew, not just a few.

LOL I can’t learn history. Seriously, you have to remember things, names of people, names of places, dates, etc. and I have a bad memory. I have always had a bad memory. I made good grades, but it was because I took notes in notehand, then transcribed them on the typewriter, used a yellow marker to highlight, then used a pink marker to highlight again. Then I went back over in pencil. Memorized. Took the test. Made a good grade. And, then my head was pretty much empty again. 😦 Most of the history I know I learned when I homeschooled my son. Thank goodness for Abeka. And, my son has a voracious appetite for history and reads historical books all the time.
Algebra, meh. Made straight A’s. No problem.

I was always the same way in school. I studied for a test then within 2 days of taking the test I’d forget all of it.
Algebra was easy. I hated science.
I get mad about algebra now and how it is taught in school, too many teachers just want the answer and the biggest part of algebra is the steps to get to your answer. We were graded on each step. It was starting when my kids were in school and you wouldn’t believe the algebra books who showed the steps incorrectly and then they always gave the odd answers in the back and several of them would be wrong.
Then there were a few times I helped my kids and their teacher marked the correct answer wrong. Of course that would tick me off so I’d make my kids show them how they were correct and the teacher’s answer book was wrong.

That is so strange that you mention that. I used to find incorrect answers, too.

my youngest son ran the millwork dept at a Home Depot store in Dallas first job out of college when there were no jobs for English majors…., then supervisor of Building Materials…..his stories about window and door measurements and fitting stuff to the
customer “information” and explaining about opening size vs product dimensions finally made him go take over the Bldg material and give up millwork as a lost cause….without math, it is impossible.

I rolled out the millwork program in our store, and was the initial trainer when Home Depot went into it seriously. They tried to make me becme the district trainer but I refused, wanting to stay in management.
I used to sell Marvin Windows, before my HD days. It f you ever win the lottery and are building a house that is the finest millwork product made. Anyhow, that’s where I learned, and they were fine teachers. Unfortunately, I had to go to Minnesota to learn.

I love Mary Stewart, and have always wanted to visit Greece. The book, This Rough Magic, is set on the island of Corfu, and weaves a story that references The Tempest. Well worth the read. Stewart was the originator of the modern romantic mystery, and her descriptions of people and places put you there. Well worth the read! I know that this one, and others, are now available on Kindle.

Yesterday younger son and his lady came by for such a good visit. Brought TWO dogs: the big/older one I was well-acquainted with and had house-sat for four months a couple of years back.. The two month old was a surprise. What a cutie. A black lab mix little girl, with a bit of American Pit Bull which gives her a wonderfully shaped head and ears – the older one certainly has needed a companion. Now he has someone to look after and play when the humans are at work.

Now I could go look and yes – – the links included in the piece illustrate the left’s intention to pull our nation down around their own ears. Those who think the thing is won because the memo got released are mistaken. It is tiresome being at high alert, in fight or flight mode, year after year.. The memo release was essential and Nunes accomplished a mighty thing (another AT piece this morning discusses the significance of what he got done…). It’s the launch of the beginning.

Apparently I’m in a math mood today. Here’s what this makes me think of.
Years ago I tutored a wonderful young neighbor girl in math. She really had a tough time with it. After a break of a few weeks, probably Christmas break, we resumed with a new chapter in her book. She struggled through the steps, utterly lost as to how to work through the problem.
I reminded her that the first step to take was what we had just learned in the last chapter. “But we finished with that!” she indignantly told me. I had to break the bad news to her that everything she was learning was a step for the next level to rest on, and that she couldn’t just forget about yesterday’s lesson. Ever.
She took that really hard. I think most Americans are the same way. They look for one big event to “fix” the country, never realizing that each step must build toward the next one, and that a lot of work is required.
They just want to be safe in their world again, complacent and content. Kudos to those who have roused from their dozing, but I think a lot of them thought this was just going to require a little time and effort, not a lifetime. And I think they may resent that, if they have to become aware of it.

Stefan Molyneux has a very interesting perspective regarding the difficulty of beating back what was started by lefties many years ago under the guise (everything is “under the guise” with the Left) of assisting the poor. The destruction of the family was the left’s actual goal. In large segments of our society that has been accomplished without those affected even realizing they were being manipulated. We are seeing the results this very day in Philadelphia.

Jerry Nadler’s Leaked Rebuttal of the Nunes Memo Is Very Weak
To justify a finding of probable cause, the government must satisfy the court as to the credibility of the informant who, it is claimed, witnessed the factual transactions described in the warrant. There is no vicarious credibility: The informant’s reliability cannot be shored up by the impeccable credentials of the investigative agent. The agent is not the witness; the informant is. The agent’s job is to satisfy the court that the informant was in a position to provide a reliable (generally, firsthand) account of what happened, and that the informant should be believed. Typically, the prosecutor and agent will give the court an assurance along the lines of “Confidential Informant No. 1 (CI-1) works at the bank, is intimately familiar with activity in the suspect’s account, and has described the following transactions . . . ”; and/or “CI-1 has provided similar information to the FBI on three other occasions and has been corroborated each time.”
There is nothing close to that in Steele’s dossier. His informants are anonymous. Some of them do not claim to have seen or heard the things they report — they’ve purportedly gotten the information from others. Meanwhile, Steele himself does not deal directly with the sources; he has a network of connections developed in his years as a British intelligence officer. In effect, A tells B something that is reported to C, who tells it to D, Steele’s guy in Russia, who passes it along to Steele. We have no idea whether A was in a position to observe what he told B, much less what credibility problems beset A, B, C, and the rest on down the chain. This is no doubt why Steele himself, in the libel cases against him, has taken the position that he cannot vouch for the truthfulness of the allegations in the dossier. Rather, he admits they were hearsay claims that he passed along because they seemed alarming, but that needed vigorous investigation by the FBI to determine their provenance and accuracy.

An Absence of Mind in the Hindu Kush
Monday Notebook – February 5, 2018
“It was reported the other day, seventeen years on, that the Taliban are now “openly active” in 70 per cent of Afghanistan. Thirteen thousand US troops remain in the country, which is an extraordinary commitment to a war with no war aims. You’ll recall J R Seeley’s famous line of 1883 that the British Empire had been acquired “in a fit of absence of mind”. Americans are resolute non-imperialists and seem to have acquired almost as vast a non-empire in similar absent-mindedness. For example, when four US soldiers were killed in an ambush in Africa at the end of last year, Lindsey Graham, who’s in favor of “boots on the ground” everywhere, professed to be entirely unaware that we had boots in Niger:…”

That’s good to know. We all have a horrible cough from this bug and it lingers long after the fever goes away. Actually I don’t know how long it will linger because Gracie caught it first and she’s still coughing.
Nanny made up all the adults some good old fashioned cough syrup that works better than the stuff you can buy. Bourbon, honey and lemon juice.

I had my grandson to lick salt out of his hand. My daughter told me she forgot how I used to do that with them in the middle of the night. I told her I didn’t know why it worked, but it does for a little while.
Thankfully, they’re not coughing as bad as they were. Their coughing fits are mainly in the morning and when they get to running and playing a lot now. The runny noses are still bad.

How did I not know this, George Conway AKA the husband of KellyAnne Conway was one of the attorneys who put together the Paula Jones brief that was presented before SCOTUS and SCOTUS voted unanimously that Bill Clinton or any sitting president could be sued for matters unrelated to their presidency.
These attorneys, including George Conway worked for years digging up dirt on President Bill Clinton and The Beast, they scoured Arkansas, they won against Clinton hired guns. They were shadow attorneys unnamed in the case. Conway was part of the team that won a unanimous decision against President Clinton before the Supreme Court.

Hi, Stellars.
Crazy weekend. Saturday was 14 hours on the clock. Sides were cramping toward the end of the day. We served our chili to almost 1,000 people. We didn’t win, but our sister store won 2nd place. Good on Chef Tom. I thought we were gonna win. Our chili was the bomb. No-frills, generic chili, and it is incredible on tortilla chips, 3rd day.
I peeled at least 48 eggs, for our spicy crab-stuffed deviled egg app, in 15 minutes. We got that process down pat. Bring them to a full boil. Turn the flame off. Cover the pan with a plate or a bigger pan, and set a timer for ten minutes. Timer goes off, take the pan to the sink, pour off most of the water and shock them with cold water, for about two minutes, BUT NO MORE. When you peel them, the egg itself should still be, at most, lukewarm. If you do it right, don’t boil ’em too long, don’t shock ’em too long, the shell comes off in like two pieces, and you say to yourself, “Wow.”
Chef learned that technique from Julia Child on TV, long ago.
Today I had off, and slept for much of it. I’m drinking a Malbec Rose, and one Natty Ice.
I’ve cut my alcohol consumption in half. And increased the quality of it at least double.
The Malbec is a good grape.

lilbirdee12’s prayer:
Our Heavenly Father, Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.
Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.
Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump and Mike Pence and their families as they seek to lead America back to You.
Grant us patience, Lord, as the evil ones try to anger us and cause us to fall.
Spread blessings over Israel and Netanyahu.
We humbly ask that You please comfort those who are grieving and in pain.
Thank you Father, for Your Love and the gift of Life.
In Jesus name, we pray. Amen.

My oldest, 2 1/2, granddaughter looks like a clone of her mother. She has since the day she was born. In fact, her mother sent my DIL a picture of her right after her birth and when she showed it to my son, he said he didn’t remember taking that picture. LOL Her hair is exactly the same color as her mother’s, a light brown with gold highlights. She also has her mother’s calm demeanor.

I kept telling my daughter how much she looked like her and she didn’t see it until she started going through my pictures.
Gracie is a shade lighter in color, although this past summer she was really dark.

My second granddaughter is about 7 mo. now and she looks more like her father. But, I still see the looks of her mother in her. I think I stepped on it when I commented that she is going to be jealous of her big sister’s eyelashes. I was told, “No she won’t, because she will have her own eyelashes.” Her big sis’s are very long and feathery and thick. She almost looks like she has false eyelashes.
