      Yeah, I recognize a lot but a lot’s gone. Politicians and developers scrambling to build tourist-related properties have bulldozed a lot of these structures and a lot have just fallen down from decay.         The humidity and heat sure doesn’t help with preservation. It’s still sad to see some of the old buildings just fall to decay.

          Neglect is more of a cause than environmental conditions. Pre-Katrina we had between 10,000 and 30,000 abandoned living spaces – no one knew exactly how many because city procedures were so sloppy they didn’t even know how many residences were not paying taxes, never mind how many houses we had. One of the SO activities was boarding up abandoned crack houses, it wasn’t even a pinprick in the problem but provided media soundbites for the pols involved and help feed the public’s denial so they’d feel ‘safer’. The targets included many older and historical buildings that could have been saved if the state’s archaic and byzantine laws didn’t prevent rational attempts at seizing and selling them to interested parties. We still have abandoned buildings let over from Katrina.

    Long ago and far away I had a friend who was the product of an alcoholic mother. She decided to address the issue and also decided that attending Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACOA) meetings would be a great idea. However, she was so afraid to go that she drafted me into going with her – to literally hold her hand. I was not the product of parental alcoholism, but certainly my family was expert at putting the FUN back into dysFUNctional, so the meetings might help me as well.

    After attending multiple meetings we decided that the participants were even worse off than we were and stopped going. However we began exploring the roots of who we were and how we’d ended up where we were and walked for many years down a path of helping each other ‘get it right’.

    One of the things we used to say to one another was, “You can’t see what you’re not looking for”.

    It occurs to me that the democrats who refused to acknowledge the President’s attempt to unify our country are stuck. They only see divisiveness – they can’t see good. They only see black and white and brown – they can’t see red, white and blue. They use fear as a cattle prod, not seeing that messages of triumph and hope are the more powerful incentives for success.

    I know that they are self serving. I know that they are power mongers. I know their hearts are black and their souls are empty and they possess not one iota of intellectual honesty. But they are also rabid – and as evidenced by Nancy Pelosi and the black caucus – filled with contempt for Patriotic sentiments.

    When President Trump first started speaking as a candidate, I told my mom that he could not fail – how could anyone be against Patriotism and God and American Exceptionalism? How could anyone argue against it? Last night was the answer and those who are against America and her deep seated values were sitting in that chamber, thumbing their noses at us.

    I wasn’t actually looking for it – I was looking to see some glimmer of understanding from them – but the depravity and ugliness of their mindset was there for all to see. So now I’ve actually seen what I wasn’t looking for and it can’t be unseen.

        I have the day off. I switched from beer to wine, and far less. Probably 1/3 what I was drinking before. And I’m learning about wine.

        As I said, this weekend is our busiest. Icebreaker Festival. Four of us will work 14 hours on Saturday alone. We got this.

          We’ll serve Competition chili to 400 or so people, who will vote on who has the best chili in town. I’ve tasted one already, with smoked brisket, from another business in town. Man, oh, man. I think ours may have venison sausage in it this year. It’s only legal because we’re not selling it.

            I love venison, probably my favorite meat, although last night I cooked two ducks, and man were they so tasty swimming in their rich and flavorful juices. I very much prefer wild game to store bought meats.

            I make chili with venison too. It is so good. My husband only likes meatloaf made with venison. Here in the South, meatloaf is a favorite food, but it is so often too greasy. Venison makes a great one with no greasy taste, just full of flavor.

            I wish we could get enough of it to keep the freezer stocked with it year round.

                Some interesting work was done some years back on diabetes in the Sioux indians living on a reservation. Seems their type 2 diabetes went pretty much away when they went back to a traditional diet, including bison, and exercised. When the test period was over many went back to their old processed/fast food diets and the type 2 came right back. Seems that one of the problems in maintaining the diet was being able to get the tribal and government officials to cough up the bison.
                Sidebar: The guy we bought our land from was famous for his love of exotics. He decided he’d like to raise bison so he spent big bucks fencing off sufficient acreage for about a dozen, putting a five foot fence in and then letting his bison herd loose. Worked great, right up until they decided the grass was greener waaaay over there – they cleared that fence like nobody’s business. About the third time he had to retrieve them, no small or easy task, he decided an exotic deer might be a better choice. That worked fine for years until, one breeding season, one of his bucks ran an antler through his midsection. Shoulda stuck to chickens.

                    No, I can usually get it at my local market, but they are out today, I just found out. There is another store that carries it, though. Trader Joe has the patties frozen, usually.

                    You can just go and get some bison? We have to order far and away just to get beefalo. Been awhile since I had a beefalo burger.

                    Used to be a truck-stop diner I frequented, for years, that had those. It died when Michigan banned smoking indoors.

                    It existed for many decades. 24 hour breakfast or lunch.

                    Now it’s an empty, derelict building with weeds around it. Ma’s Coffee Pot.

                    All because cigarettes. And nobody in there, smoking or non-, minded the smoke.

                    It’s a freakin’ truck stop. You’re getting worse when you walk out the door.

    Morning Stella, all,
    My mother did finally pass, Sad, of course. But good as well, it was time. She was a good woman who endured well through this sometimes hard and difficult life. As most all do. She had a great laugh and a beautiful smile with eyes that twinkled at the joys this world brings as well. She will be missed much, and remembered often, laughing.

    Also, what a STELLAR State of the Union speech last night. STELLAR I tell ya’!
    Love our President Trump!

      I’m sorry to hear this, derk. No matter how much you know it is time, there is sorrow and loss for the mother who was with you every day of your life, until now. I lost my mother in 1997, and I still miss her.

      Dear Derk, may you and all who love your Mom know all the peace, condolences, and love that God can give. The grief of losing a loved one is deep, but only temporary until eventually we joyfully see them again in the presence of God. A person cannot have love without eventually grieving, but I would not exchange a minute of my time with my grandmother, for not having grieved at losing her. God Bless you Derk.

      The oligarch democrats are going to lose what little they have left of their minds.

      This speech was sheer strategy, you can see when Trump finally acknowledges the seated democrats that they are responding just as he knew they would. President Trump is going to cause an insurgency in the base of the democrats. POTUS effectively pulled the mask off of the whole elitist pack last night as the democrat’s base saw the elitists sit glued to their seats when he mentioned good things happening for blacks and hispanics.

      CBS 75% approval rating. Where does that register on the richter scale?

        I’m one of those friends. Four times. Four different naturely-named institutions.

        I was usually the sanest person, albeit the most depressed, in there. And that included the staff and psychologists.

        That was a long time ago, two decades, and I’m glad I left that field of study.

        The last time I was in a psych ward was in the Summer of 2001. I remember some crazy lady making lots of money telling me that there is no such thing as evil. I got out of that Bin, and never looked back, after 9/11 happened a couple of months later.

        Lucky to be alive.

          There is a real problem with the majority of people who go into psychiatry and the mental health field in general, often they are there to figure themselves out and to feel better about their lives because they find people whose mental health issues manifest themselves in ways that are grander than the mental health expert.

          As Rush Limbaugh’s father used to say “Show me one person that they cured.”

          Study after study shows family and or friend involvement, therapy, intermittent pharmaceuticals, faith, and training the brain to respond differently to the same stimuli is the best defense against a mental breakdown.

          There are people who are not safe outside of an institution, I’ve met them and my heart breaks for them, I’m not sure what the solution is for those people other than to keep them safe and as content as possible within walls.

          (((Wooly)))) I hope and pray that your battle with the bottle is won. An alcoholic is almost always self medicating. Depression is the #one cause of alcoholism. Depression and alcoholism is a vicious cycle as the alcoholism actually compounds the depression.

          There is undoubtedly evil in the world I thankfully had a therapist who knew this, I went through about 7 before I found someone who actually helped me. We started out our first session by discussing the lyrics to Harry Chapin songs.

          This was his favorite song.

          He also knew he went into therapy to fix himself. Sweet man.

    The Guardian UK has broken the story, one echoed breathlessly by others in the major media, that the FBI is assessing still another Trump-Russia dossier, this one authored by an international man of mystery named Cody Shearer.

    “The Guardian has been told the FBI investigation is still assessing details in the ‘Shearer memo’ and is pursuing intriguing leads,” write reporters Stephanie Kirchgaessner and Nick Hopkins hopefully.

    “One source with knowledge of the inquiry said the fact the FBI was still working on it suggested investigators had taken an aspect of it seriously.”

    This new dossier has the potential, however, to be an even greater embarrassment for Democrats and the Clintons than does the Steele Dossier.

    In 2015, the National Review’s Brendan Bordelon served up a useful review of Shearer’s past shenanigans. When Bill Clinton was elected president in 1992, Shearer’s brother-in-law Strobe Talbott helped ease Shearer into the presidential orbit.

    Bordelon discussed Shearer’s sinister work with Clinton enforcer Terry Lenzner to silence the “bimbos” then erupting all over the southeast as well as his absurd “intelligence gathering” efforts, first in Bosnia and later with Sid “Vicious” Blumenthal in Libya.

    Bordelon did not, however, make a point of Talbott’s Russian background. At the time, it had no particular relevance. It obviously does today.

    Talbott met Clinton when both were Rhodes Scholars at Oxford, and the two stayed close. At Oxford, Talbott translated Nikita Khrushchev’s memoirs into English.

    Talbott’s first job in Clinton’s State Department was to help oversee the break-up of the former Soviet Union. He was later appointed deputy secretary of state.

    In his 2008 book “Comrade J,” respected journalist Pete Early made a very strong case that Talbott had been compromised by the former Russian Foreign Intelligence (SVR)…

        That story really hits you doesn’t it? Years ago I knew a man who had a daughter with Down’s Syndrome. He was not very well educated, was quite a rounder in many ways, and was a bad drunk, for lack of more truthful words. But his daughter was in her thirties, and she was very beloved by him and his wife. She died maybe ten years after I got to know him, and he and his wife were broken. Utterly broken, especially him.

        She had brought them nothing but pure love and joy, and they counted themselves blessed to have had her. I have never seen more familiar love than that family showed for each other. She made them all better, she made them all able to rise above their terrible sins.

          I have a friend who had a daughter years before I met her, the daughter was born without a certain chromosome, she lived a month, the knew while she was in uteri that she would die soon after birth, she had one beautiful month of pure love.

          I weep when I think of what happens to the most vulnerable defenseless of God’s children in what should be the safest place in the world.

          There is a story about a young woman who was pregnant and was going to have an abortion, she and her boyfriend stopped to do something and a dog charged at her, she instinctively put her arm down to protect her womb. She realized right then and there that she was protecting the baby that she was ready have an abortionist kill. She changed her mind in that instant and understood what it was to be a mother.

    I’ve been thinking about this for awhile, and never could gather enough courage to do it. I’m coming out of the closet today.

    There will be a small group of people who saw it coming. The rest may be shocked and disappointed. Please hear me out.

    I believe what we are now seeing is a counter-coup that was planned prior to Trump winning the presidency. There, I said it.

    Making America Great Again means turning the reigns back over to We The People. Go back and watch Trump’s speeches, especially his closing argument video (link in comments).

    Look at all the military men he has surrounding him. Admiral Rogers met with him a few days after the election, and he then moved his staff from Trump Tower in NY to a site in NJ. Rogers told him he was being surveilled. He told him everything.

    Can anyone explain why no one is reporting on counter investigations that have been going on while the Russia thing plays out? I mean, nothing stopped them from speculating 24/7 about Russia. The IG investigation was announced Jan 2017. No curiosity? Nobody wonders where they may be getting their evidence?

    Look at how some people are acting — those who depend on funding from things like climate change and other legislation that requires high taxation, high regulation, and schemes like Obamacare for funding. Do you truly believe multi-millionaires are afraid for the planet? Care about who has access to affordable health care?

    How about the 12/21/17 EO related to global corruption. Nobody in the media cares? And now we have the EO on GTMO.

    The FBI, DOJ, most lobbyists, US Chamber of Commerce, protectors of sanctuary cities, Hollywood, academia, the list goes on. They all need big government schemes and illegal immigrants….. to advance their careers, their bank accounts, provide votes, and cover their tracks. They couldn’t give 2 flying figs about Americans’ prosperity.

    Then there’s election fraud. The NSA is doing a recount. They’ve already found 7 million fraudulent votes. In Trump’s favor.

    The first year of the presidency was about a couple of things. One, economic growth. Two, give the perpetrators enough rope to hang themselves.

    NSA knows everything.
    Nothing can really be deleted.
    The military people involved in this have done it before. In other countries.

    I could go on, but I’ve either lost you, or you already believed it was happening.

    Too soon? Maybe I should have waited a little longer.

      As a small indication of what leftie elitists are like and who they care about, a friend told a story about visiting the home of a nouveau riche woman she’d met at a Hollywood gathering. Once arrived at the mansion, my friend was invited into the large kitchen where a maid of Latino extraction was working away preparing the luncheon.

      The woman showed my friend some new dining items she’d been given–crystal wine glasses or something of the like. The maid continued working around them and the woman appeared to not even notice her.

      Noting the woman’s lack of manners, my friend turned to the maid and said, “Hi, I’m Wendy, what’s your name.” Before the maid could even answer, the woman just said, “Oh, she’s the new hired help Maria. She’ll have lunch ready for us in a few minutes,” and started to walk toward the kitchen dining area where the table had been set. Wendy didn’t follow immediately but instead held out her hand to Maria, saying, “Nice to meet you,” and exchange a pleasantry. The hostess acted a bit annoyed and flustered and then ushered Wendy to the table where they sat until Maria served them.

      After telling me the story, Wendy shook her head and indicated how awkward she’d felt at having another human being in the room with her and her hostess and not even having the person acknowledged…as though Maria wasn’t worthy to be introduced to someone of a higher economic status standing right next to her.

      This…THIS is what many Dem elitists are like…all PC at a political gathering but in real life uncaring…the type who think $1,000 is a pittance to a working family…or who speak to large union meetings about worker rights but don’t allow their own workers to organize or ask for decent wages such as Pelosi did at the restaurants she and hubby once owned (maybe still do).

      Somewhat minor but telling items about those who wish to rule over us.

      No sweat, I do believe I called this a coup nextdoor. I do believe I also called it treasonous as we had an attempt before the election to prevent the people from having an honest and Constitutional election and, after Trump won, an attempt to manufacture false evidence to remove him from office,
      Now the purists may say that my use of ‘treason’ is not correct as the Constitution doesn’t list what’s going on as such, but I’d argue that by doing what they are doing these plotters have declared war against the US by attempting to overthrow a legally elected government.
      We don’t want to think of this as a coup or an illegal and criminal usurpation of power but it’s starting to walk, quack and smell as such. Note that some Republicans are balking a bit at releasing the memo, are seemingly not too keen about actively pushing an investigation into treasonous activities by not only the nation’s premier LEA but its intelligence agencies charged and chartered to PROTECT the same government and citizens they’re trying to subvert. This goes far and deep and has the potential to tip this country over into something really nasty.

          Constitutionally it’s one thing, I was looking at the older and more broader definition of disloyalty to the ‘crown’ including attempting to overthrow the government, which I believe is what we’re seeing.
          Unsuccessful acts of ‘treason’ used to be dealt with by a deserved gruesome punishment but the US moved attempted overthrow out of the Constitution and under a bloodless US Code statue with pissant 20 year max penalty. You can get the same PLUS a fine for robbing a Federal bank.

    Did anyone else notice President Trumps different mannerisms with Vice President Pence and Dirt Ball Paul Ryan? At the end of the speech President Trump pointed at Ryan in the universal way he does with everyone and shook his hand there was no warmth between them, then our president turned to VP Pence and they smiled warmly, proudly and each other, no finger point just a bonded handshake.

    Also Vice President Pence looked engaged and proud during the speech whereas Ryan nodded condescendingly during the speech. Ryan stared at Pence for a while but he was ignored. A very interesting dynamic.

    He then issued a scathing response to  in which he sarcastically said: ‘Whoever translated it for him from Russian did a good job.’  😂 (These folks are nuts!)

    A spokesperson for Gutierrez, 64, however, insisted that his walk out was not a political gesture, and was based more on scheduling.

    ‘He was trying to make it to Univision’, his spokesman said. ‘He watched the last 90 seconds on TV. It was not a protest or anything. He was just trying to get ahead of the crowd.’ 
    In his scathing statement, Gutierrez said he was ‘hopeful’, but admitted he doesn’t see Congress and the President coming to an agreement that prevents the deportation of dreamers.

    So Gutierrez lets the cat out of the bag, the democrats are not going to play ball, DACA is going to expire and they are going to try and blame President Trump for sending children to their deaths in Mexico.

    President Trump could not have played his hand better.

      “The Passion of the Christ” is THE definitive film on Christ’s crucifixion. It is mesmerizing, heart-rending, masterfully acted by all concerned, wondrously directed and photographed. The sound track is completely fitting. No easy platitudes and no namby-pamby Jesus, and no sparing the audience all the gruesome details.

      By the time it was finished, I was absolutely wrung out emotionally but invigorated spiritually. A wonderful experience.

      Satan was absolutely after Mel Gibson full-time during filming and subsequent film release. It was the beginning of Gibson’s slide into all his troubles–the arrests, the marriage break-up, the affairs (not that he didn’t have them before, but they were never in the daily news), the out-of-wedlock child, the crazed outbursts, the public drunkenness.

      I hope someday he knows, really knows how many prayers were said on his behalf during that time. Doubtless those pleas to God were the reason he didn’t go completely unhinged. Perhaps he feels with this sequel he will make full circle, returning to a sense that filmmaking can bring truth to the world, can create uplifting visions to assist us in our every day lives, can show that man can be redeemed through belief in our Creator God.

      May the new film be a fulfilling venture from start to finish and beyond.

        Lucille, you said everything perfectly. I saw the Passion in the theater, and I bought a copy to watch each year during Lent. I have never been able to watch the whole movie again, only parts on YouTube.

        Sometimes I will say a rosary to the accompaniment of the videos on YouTube someone has made with scenes from the movie accompanying the recited rosary.

        I will never forget how the whole theater of people just sat there in silence when the movie ended. We just sat. No one spoke, and we only got up to leave when people came in for the next show.

        I believe that Mel Gibson, in that movie, made people come as close as is possible in this world, to experience some of the shock, the emotions, the hugeness of the sacrifice Christ entered. He made us see the battle with Satan, the absolute love, all of it.

        And you are the only person who I have ever seen voice what I would not, but felt completely. That Mell Gibson was under relentless attack from Satan. The movie was made, it was seen, it was huge, it could not be stopped. I believe the only recourse left to Satan was to attack and discredit Mel Gibson.

        As I’m sure you know, and agree, I am not saying Mel had no choices and could not have won that battle, for we all can. There is no fight God asks of us that we cannot allow Him to give us the victory. I sure wouldn’t have bet on myself in such a situation.

        But I believe the battle against Mel was epic. I too pray for him, and you have reminded me, not nearly enough.

        The Kennedy boy said it was an excessive amount of lip balm rather than drool. No idea but it seems to me that no Kennedy would ever make a rookie mistake like excessive lip balm they are trained for the camera from early on in life. On a side note I can’t stomach him, some people like Barak Obama, Hilary Clinton, Louis Farrakhan and this chap just give me the willies when I see them.

    California now can’t drink coffee without it causing them cancer. I think it would just be simpler for stores to put up a big sign that says, “Everything in this store has been known to cause cancer in California!”
