Czarina’s LEAST favorite dog. Soon as she sees these pix I’m rather sure our visit to a friend of mine many years ago who rehabed dobies who’d…..had problems….will flash thru her mind.

Poor dogs. Its always hard to get back to a healthy personality after abuse. One of my beagles was a rescue. Several homes, left at the pound 3 times, vicious. Once we got her and straightened her out, she is a very fat sweet dog. She had to have tums every night for a year due to anxiety. I think she thought we would get rid of her.

Too many people get Dobies thinking they’re naturally protective guardians who’ll do what they’re told with no oversight and that causes real problems. On the other hand you also had that innercity population that’s come close to ruining the doberman, rottweiler and pitbull breeds that indiscriminately breed and abuse them, creating a reservoir of broken dogs.

Yep. Working dogs need a job and training. In about 6 years this is the breed Im leaning toward getting. I want the kiddo to participate in training and be able to run the dog. But it will be spoiled….

If you want a working dobie vice a show one you have to go to a reputable breeder. One of the oldest I know is Kimbertal Kennels. I’m not connected to them but I know folks who’ve dealt with them since the 70s. You’re gonna pay but you’ll get a lifetime guarantee from folks who’ve been doing dobies for a lifetime.

Ty. I was just thinking about how to find a good breeder. My vet just happens to be the best ear crop doc in CA, but he will retire before I get to that point. Probably how I got so partial to a dobie.

I’m not an ear/tail crop fan, you can’t in Britain as it’s illegal, but it also can work against you in a civil trial. That ‘devil dog’ look’s intimidating but if your dobie bites someone and a tort lawyer starts showing the jury pix of your terror dog makeup…it don’t help, I’ve seen it. That said, Kimbertal does its pups’ ears and does a fantastic job, they screw one up and they blow a valuable sale, you can buy a ready-to-go
pup.

Border Collies can be ruined with the best intentions by people who don’t realize they are getting a dog born to work. They have to have a job, a purpose, or they are destructive! I think they can be smarter than most people! If bored, they will find something to do, and usually not a good thing! I wear mine out daily with Frisbee, ball, toys and word games. She is our 3rd, and we are so happy to find that BCs fit with us so well. We got Isla from “Pheonix Rising Border Collie Rescue” of North Carolina. This is a really good place to start and learn about what it takes to be a good BC parent.

same with cattle herding dogs….my Aussie cattle dog is just brilliant…but absolutely needs constant work to do…even if it is going and “finding” sticks and bringing them to me…..he is a rescue, and an indoor dog, and a cuddlebunny at night with us…but he is constantly wanting to DO SOMETHING….having two dogs helps him settle, even tho he tried to herd the female dachs and she is unherdable…..lol

Not that I needed it to be proven to me, but I have had one heck of a lesson on the importance of knowing the temperament of the breed you get, and being prepared to meet their needs. It will make dog and owner happier.
We have needed to make some major accommodations for the dog we inherited because she is what she is, not her fault that we aren’t the best people for her. It is what it is now, but she, and we, would have been better off not having to force things.

All of our dogs except for Z were and are volunteers with unknown backgrounds. Oh yeah, the cats ditto and that strange starling who lived with us. We do better with animals than people so we all just sorta fit in, luckily we’ve never had problems with all of the critters adjusting and fitting in, it’s mostly some work tempered with common sense.

I gotta tell the story before Czarina gives it her ‘Tell Tale Heart’ treatment. It had been years since I’d seen Mary and her dobies. When we worked together she had ‘Moose’, a huge perfectly proportioned dobie who was out of show standards due to his size but was as smart as a whip and totally protective of Mary and her daughter.
I had to visit her so on a trip to Florida I called, she was free so I took Czarina and went over. I’d mentioned Czarina’s trepidation regarding dobies and Mary said she had three she was rehabilitating (two had attacked either their owner or strangers) and one that was just a bit skittish but she’d put them up. Fine, we go over and we’;re sitting on the couch with Mary across from us talking about old times when three dobie heads (pointy, satanic dobie heads according to You Know Who) appear from down the hall, they’re separated from us by a baby gate. Their faces get that ‘please-please-PLEASE let us come out and lick you’ (please-please-PLEASE let us come out and tear you to shreds according to You Know Who) looks, toenails frantically tippy-tapping on Mary’s hardwood floors.
At this point Mary walks over to the gate, explaining that she didn’t realize the extent of Czarina’s state of stark terror, and lets the dobies out as she explains how well she’s rehabed these dogs, returning them to the ‘good doggie’ fold. The dobies burst out in their best frantic-terrier mode, tippy-tapping, sinuously dancing, writhing, wriggling and rubbing…straight over to the new almost catatonic Czarina on the couch. I’m sitting next to her but the dobies are ignoring me, they’re centering on her, heads flipping from side to side in excitement (the excitement of the anticipation of tearing her apart, according to You-Know-Who), one doing that excited jaw popping some dobies do – an added inducement to increased levels of terror for…you get it. Two are dancing around on either side of her, their smiling faces inches from hers, the third is trying to butt-crawl backwards up onto the couch between us and roll into her lap.
Mary’s sitting across, nonchalantly chatting along, the dobies behaviors not only part of her homes decor but a demonstration of how she’s turned the Hounds of the Baskervilles into Scooby Doos. “They’re fine, Hon, just don;’t let them smell your fear’, Mary offers in passing. Smelling Czarina’s fear isn’t the issue, the dobies have to pick their way thru piles of it condensing on the floor around her feet. She’s frozen rigid and turning transparent as her blood’s rushing to a spot behind her toenails for protection’ The dobies are nuzzling and licking me, they’re happy to have guests, Czarina refers to it as they’re ‘tasting’ us in preparation for tearing us…you get the idea.
Mary’s still chatting along, and in the course gets up and retrieves the dobies, putting them back into their room so they don’t become over stimulated. I’m on the couch wondering if I can bring Czarina back to this dimension without medical intervention…her color starts to return so it’s time for me to start planning on how I’ll survive in the car with her over the next few days.
I still hear about this visit, it’s been nearly 30 years so I hear about it less, but the issue of having a doberman is never brought up in this house. Never.

(and that was weird)…doberman from hell. As it pinned her to the ground, dripping acidic saliva on her in anticipation of tearing her slowly to pain-ridden shards of flesh, she was rescued by a platoon of passing Marines and two Jehovah’s Witnesses just in time. At least that’s the way I understand it.

ok on the semper fi rescue….not so sure about the Jehovah’s witnesses….did she have to read their literature if they rescued her?

They pestered the dog into running away. Was going to say they deployed a ‘tract’ vehicle but that was probably too obscure.

I just want to give czarina a hug. My kiddo had an evil dapple dachshund repeatedly try to rip his hand off and bark at him(not) yesterday in petsmart. She was just being an indignant wiener dog pup but he said she was evil…the ice blue eyes mustve done it.

Was your child badgering the dog?

No. He knows to approach slow and put his hand low, palm up and wait. The owner said the doxie was skittish. I think he made her nervous in a strange place already.

Always best to put palm up, fingers first as small dogs need that time to adjust their bite lunge. Always a good idea to know what’s up, dachs.

little kids do not understand dogs and young ones should never go up to a strange dog on their own without an adult right there. Dogs see much of what kids think are friendly guestures and patting as agression, and that is dog pack language. If you want to have a dog with kids…as well as yourself….read a LOT about dog behavior and how THEY think….before you go get in their face….first of all…dogs do not like you looking directly into their eyes, they do not like being patted on the head, and getting a face into their space is deemed threatening and they have to go into defense mode…..that is how they WORK….and the dog playing is myths learned by folks that don’t have training but have been around dogs as adults. Raising a puppy in your house with the kids from their youth as puppies is VASTLY different from inspecting or greeting a STRANGER dog that is past puberity or into adulthood.

I try to discourage anyone from approaching my doggie with their hand out, because she might lunge at them like she is going to rip off their arm. Of course she is missing most of her teeth, but the response from people is usually, “Aww, but she’s so cute.” 🙄

I make him ask first also. Ive explained and reminded on all points. Funny tjing I notice dogs alert at his voice or if hes excited. High pitch of a 4 yr old maybe?

Gee, that reminds me of the time my husband and I stepped inside the door of one of his friend’s house and was repeatedly told the chihuahua that was snarling and barking at my feet wouldn’t bite. I finally screamed, “She IS biting me!” The woman didn’t think it was a bite that was worthy of discussion because she didn’t draw much blood. 🙄
