This man was, and remains, phenomenal.
11 people on stage, with James Brown as the fire in their midst.
MJ always said he was his greatest hero.
From the Infogalactic page on James Brown:
The pattern of attack-points is the emphasis, not the pattern of pitches. It’s as if the guitar is an African drum, or idiophone. Alexander Stewart states that this popular feel was passed along from “New Orleans—through James Brown’s music, to the popular music of the 1970s.”[47] Those same tracks were later resurrected by countless hip-hop musicians from the 1970s onward. As a result, James Brown remains to this day the world’s most sampled recording artist.
He turned the voice into a powerful percussion instrument, coupled with tonality and pitch.
I hope Bobby McFerrin’s next endeavor goes this way, but with my luck it will be Gergorian chants. Here’s the best James Brown performance ever:
We listen to a lot of this guy at work.

Thanks so much, Lburg! I was reading the daily Bible reading just now and came across this in the NIV version…Galatians 5:6b: The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.
That’s one of those little “Wow!” verses that tells it all.

Just did the math. I was reading Howie Carr every other day in the Herald, first thing, every other day, almost thirty years ago. He’s a gem, and old-school, and fearless.
Excellent essay. I wonder what “The Swimmer” thinks, when he’s looking up at us.
Probably, “Dang, these flames hurt. I’m sure I’ll be outa here in a couple days.”

“She dipped a clean pinkie into the hollandaise in the bowl. It coated her finger like a sheath of yellow velvet. Despite her nerves, she plated swiftly and surely. She lifted the poached eggs clear from the shimmering, hot water with a safecracker’s touch, laying each one with infinite care in place on top of its foundation of English muffin and Canadian bacon. Silky drizzle of hollandaise, sprinkle of fresh parsley, grind of black pepper, framed with creamed spinach, dusted with paprika. Done.” ~ Brian O’Reilly, Angelina’s Bachelors: A Novel with Food

No. No Bearnaise either. Who puts that on a nice filet mignon? Why?
Some people just want to destroy every thing that is good.
😉
Just kidding. We go through a lot of that stuff, and Chef knows his sauces. Apparently that’s a thing on steak? And on crab-stuffed deviled eggs. People even order it as a side for their potato wedge steak fries.
I wish I had the statistics. God Mode. How many thousands of potatoes did I cut into 8 steak fries each last year? Best to not ask. I told that to Chef when he wondered how many tons of Cow he’s turned into beautiful steaks in the last three years. How many COWS, for that matter? Best not to ask. It would depress you.
Personally, I think the stuff drowns out the flavor of the thing you’re eating.
Ranch, bleu cheese, au pavre. A-1. Those are good. Hollandaise and Bearnaise make me wonder if my taste buds are malformed or something.

OMG The Darkest Hour was so good I couldn’t believe it was over when it ended. I think everybody involved in the making of the movie did a fantastic job. Gary Oldman was so amazing and believable. There were times when Churchill was suffering over his decisions and I felt almost like I couldn’t breathe. And, I am a great critic of the way many movies are shot, either too close, or too far, or the camera moving around too much. But, in this case, they did whatever needed doing, many close shots for the emotions and many long shots to get a feeling of what was going on overall. Just an amazing movie in every way as far as I am concerned.
However, I would recommend before you go see this, if you don’t know your history, read up a little on Dunkirk and that time. They did a pretty good job of explaining it, but my friend was confused because she didn’t know anything about it. It would help you understand the real dilemma Churchill had at the time.

Have to confess: my morning beverage, after water, is a glass of dry or semi-sweet white wine, nowadays. Brings me up to zero on the inebriation line, from about -3.
I see inebriation as a line from -10 (Quick, gimme a g**damn drink) to Zero (Completely level), to 10 (Got a good, fun, happy buzz) to 20, the max, (Puking and fighting the cops at the same time, or falling into your windowsill with your head.) I stay at about 2 most times.
Only been to 20 perhaps twice in my life. Not going to relay those two stories.

Just stopped in to grab some bacon, thanks Nyet….:0)
The week before last, I took stock of my situation and realized that in the last two months I’ve put on 15 gallons of paint, I’ve rebuilt two walls, tiled my kitchen backsplash & packed up part of my furniture and I realized, I’m only about half-way done with the work I need to do. Totally deflated my sense of achievement, so in defiance, I took last week off….(definition of self-defeating?), to recharge the batteries.
In the meantime, ‘the bank’ closing is set for next Tuesday and I have a meeting with the architect set up for the following week after.
Have a beautiful day all.

Not my grandkiddos, they love their toys. I hate to see ToysRUs go under, there really isn’t any toy stores anymore. When my kids were young we loved KBtoys, I didn’t even realize they no longer existed until I started looking for them last year.
Something that baffles me about toy makers is why they put button cell batteries in toys. A young toddler in our area died not long ago due to a button cell battery. So now, I read the box and am shocked how many toys contain them. Now finding toys that don’t do something or make sounds is getting harder to find. Outside of building blocks, some dolls, some stuffed animals and hot wheel cars, most do something. However, they have so many more educational toys today than they had when my kids were little that it’s kind of a trade off I guess.
My grandson spends hours playing with his hot wheel race cars and everything becomes a race track. I can sit and watch and listen to him play for hours as well.

More than a paper diploma
“There are a great many reasons to support education choice,” then-Cato analyst Jason Bedrick wrote in 2016. “One reason is simply this: it works.”
This week is National School Choice Week, made official by President Donald J. Trump in a proclamation issued Monday. Just three decades ago, charter schools didn’t exist. Today, more than 3 million students are enrolled in such programs.
Two principles guide the Administration’s vision for school choice: opportunity and results. “Communities that provide academic options — traditional public, public charter, private, magnet, parochial, virtual, and homeschooling — empower parents and guardians to select the best educational fit for their children,” the President wrote.
In aggregate, those opportunities turn into a global competitive edge for America.

Vice President Pence returns to Washington
Vice President Mike Pence returned from a four-day trip to the Middle East last night, during which he met with President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi of Egypt, His Majesty King Abdullah II of Jordan, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Reuven Rivlin of Israel.
Here are a few highlights of the Vice President’s trip, in his own words:
• “I can’t help but marvel at the strength of the relationship that President Trump and [Egyptian] President Al Sisi have forged, after years where our two countries were drifting apart.”
• To U.S. troops of the 332nd Air Expeditionary Wing: “You’ve answered the call to confront, and defeat, the embodiment of evil in our time — the barbarians known as ISIS.”
• To the Knesset in Israel: “In the weeks ahead, our administration will advance its plan to open the United States Embassy in Jerusalem, and that United States Embassy will open before the end of next year.”

President Trump’s op-ed: ‘A year of real change’
Congressional Democrats greeted President Trump’s first-year anniversary in office with a shutdown of the federal government. Despite their attempt to grab headlines, President Trump is confident his Administration’s record to date speaks for itself.
One excerpt from the piece: “Estimates predict the U.S. economy grew at an annualized rate of more than 3 percent in the fourth quarter of last year – just like it did in the two quarters before that. The economy has created more than two million new jobs, and the unemployment rate has fallen to its lowest rate in 17 years: 4.1 percent.”
The President closes with a nod to the “forgotten man” theme of his campaign: “After one year, I am proud to report to the American people that we truly are making America great again – for all Americans!”

Didn’t tell you, Lucille, was working, but your photo on Monday’s open thread looks like a hand, reaching out and touching the sun. Gorgeous photo.
This one. Whoever took that needs a prize.

Someone today quotes the reported remark of a congressional aide to a Russian official, and I don’t know if it’s been confirmed. “In America we have two parties, the stupid party and the evil party. I’m proud to be a member of the stupid party. Sometimes the two parties get together and do something both stupid and evil. This is called bipartisanship.”

Yep. I don’t think Trump is G.O.P., honestly.
Only in name. They all hate him. He doesn’t need them, though.
And he’s far more intelligent than all of them.
I’m never going to stop savoring that fact. He is well surnamed.
He has an (R) after his name, but he is not part of the Uniparty. That was just a formality.

He is far, far more intelligent than all of them. And a leader.
We haven’t seen those qualities in a POTUS for a long time.
We are 4 days into year #2 of his 8 year presidency. Praise God.

Operation Rescue’s Statement on the Departure of Cecile Richards from Planned Parenthood
Washington, DC – According to news reports, Cecile Richards will be stepping down from her role as Chief Executive Officer of Planned Parenthood.
The following statement is a response from Troy Newman, President, Operation Rescue:
Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion business, is under investigation by the Department of Justice for illegally trafficking in aborted baby remains and other crimes. Could it be that Richards is getting out while she can, before indictments are handed down? Orange may be her new favorite color!
Or could it be that Planned Parenthood now sees her as a liability with all her connections to others under criminal investigation such as Hillary Clinton, the beleaguered Clinton Foundation, and Fusion GPS? Whether she is abandoning a sinking ship or being kicked to the curb by Planned Parenthood, this reveals a destabilized abortion organization, and as long as they are disorganized, it means they won’t be expanding their abortion empire. That is great news.

I hope all that is true, but some of the last paragraph might be counting eggs before they are hatched. Planned Parenthood’s evil goes deep, deep. It will be like cutting out a malignancy with many tentacles bound deep around vital organs.

She would never willingly give up that humongous salary and benefit package. Likely she has something else in mind, maybe running for governor like her mother or some other impossible dream like Senator, replacing Ted Cruz.
Perhaps it’s power she’s after now, and with power of the type she craves she’ll make up that million dollar take from killing babies in no time and surpass it.

“My name is John Anglin. I escape from Alcatraz in June 1962 with my brother Clarence and Frank Morris. I’m 83 years old and in bad shape. I have cancer. Yes we all made it that night but barely!” said the letter, obtained by local CBS affiliate KPIX.
He then tries to strike an astonishing deal with the FBI — offering to be locked up again for a year in exchange for medical care.
The feds have reopened the ancient cold case as a result of the shocking piece of evidence, which was sent to San Francisco police.

OK….this one is for Menagerie and anyone else looking for Spring – this afternoon’s emerging Daffodils!
And this one is for SandandSea – panettone hanging upside down while it cools and then sitting on the counter once it has. I finished the 4th batch today. I have a tendency with tricky recipes to keep making them so I make all the mistakes at one time instead of dribbling them out for years. At last – a panettone I can call my own.

Why is it upside down?

Well, Gill, according to the recipe (and now, personal >ahem< experience) the dough is so light that it needs to cool upside down. Otherwise it acts like a souffle and deflates.

lilbirdee12’s prayer:
Our Heavenly Father, Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.
Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.
Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump and Mike Pence and their families as they seek to lead America back to You.
Grant us patience, Lord, as the evil ones try to anger us and cause us to fall.
Spread blessings over Israel and Netanyahu.
We humbly ask that You please comfort those who are grieving and in pain.
Thank you Father, for Your Love and the gift of Life.
In Jesus name, we pray. Amen.

WOW! LIVE: Michigan State President Resigns over Nassar Scandal – LIVE BREAKING NEWS COVERAGE
Michigan State University President Lou Anna Simon resigned tonight over the scandal involving Larry Nassar, the doctor who was sentenced today to 40 to 175 years in prison for molesting young girls and women, including Olympic gymnasts, under the guise of medical treatment. Nassar had worked at Michigan State during the time he abused his patients, and many of the victims accused the university of mishandling complaints about Nassar.
