    How many of you have experience with the cub scouts? When the kiddo turns 5 it will be an option. What kind of temperament and maturity level is needed? What do they do as a cub? Negatives/positives? Im scared to death of the what ifs. Anything you know will be saved for later.

      My NOLA weekender who has the property diagonally across from me has Scouts up camping quite a bit, up here last weekend as a matter of fact. All the Scouts are mannered and polite. My old Army CO is a longtime Scoutmaster.
      Very few 5 year old’s set in his ways yet, Cub Scouts will socialize them…or not…going in and trying it’s how you find out if it’s for them. I had one who lasted a few years in Cubs then stopped, others showed zero interests.
      Scouting teaches them a number of things, most importantly to me (I’m prejudiced) is how to work in and as a group. There are rolls for parents/grandparents too, it ain’t just a kid thing, you get to participate and work with them as they learn and grow. Another big plus for me is that Leftists and Progs hate Scouting, it builds citizens.

      My son was in the Cub Scouts and he loved it. It became especially important because we started homeschooling at that time, too. The mothers were very involved and the activities were fun and had meaning. Back then, there were no girls and when they went camping, my husband went with him. He was six when he started and was pretty mature for his age.

      cub scouts today, like the boy scout organization…is vastly different from how it was in the 1950s and 1960s when they were peak training for young American boys using mature adults to lead and teach values and behaviors and spiritual honesty and a belief in God.

      boy scouts was about physical, moral, and skill teaching and mastery with older male leaders.

      cub scouts were created as a precursor, but as a different venue for very young boys…but still relied on uniforms and pride and behavioral memes.

      cub scouts was run by a den mother and maybe an assistant….a mother….and they used crafts and games to burn off energy and direct group behavior norms in prep for the boy scout world run my grown males. The den had a boy scout that came to meetings and provided a role model and discipline operation so that the den mother was not merely a substitute for the cub’s own parent…but showed how an older boy with principles and leadership skills could provide a goal and attainable future for the boys….and he took the boys outside for more physical games while the den mother got stuff ready for crafts or snacks. parents were very aware of the events, but did not attend meetings and hover over their kids, but the den mother might give the parents a heads up if a kid was having socialization issues….scouting provided rewards to achievements in the form of badges and patches to be worn on the uniform and to demonstrate personal achievement rather than team or group successes like the little soccer trophy deal today.

      scouts have been taken over by liberalism and sadly much destroyed from the valuable mission they provided….it started mostly with the anti war late 60s and 70s and anyone in a uniform that marched and saluted a flag or took orders were held in contempt, so those hippy dippies turned into progressive “parents” and the civil rights courts stole the ability of adults to teach and train young people to grow up responsibly and to be of service to others and to respect God and Government.

      I suggest the key is the den itself, the ideology and methods of the den mother, and whether or not a boy scout troop has any participation in the den .

      I do not have a lot of confidence that today’s scouting will generate the value for which the program was so famous when brought to the USA from England.

      I have done all aspects of scouting from being a cub, a boy scout, an explorer scout, taken jamboree trips and outdoor extended trecks…and been an adult leader as well, as was my own father.

        I can guarantee you that the enforced top-end-loaded ‘correct and forward thinking’ is dependent upon the den’s location and guidance. The Scout group my weekender neighbor has and the LDS Church sponsored one my old Army Colonel’s involved with aren’t doing May Pole dances to honor Gaia and where they have a need to respect corporate dogma they all know which bathroom to use…OK, the ones across the street use a tree on the farm BUT…
        Morals should be taught at home and church, the Scouts supplemented that at one time more than they do now but that’s such a small part of their entire package it’s easily dealt with. Overall it’s a good program.

          I am not thoroughly familiar with the Boy Scouts today, and what is going on, but from what I actually know is going on with Girl Scouts, I intend to throw the mother of all bitch fits if my kids try to sign up the granddaughters. Probably won’t change their mind, but our parish is starting up a troop that is a member of one of the alternative groups that have popped up since the GS started to support abortiona and the trans agenda.

          I do not want them exposed to the adults who support such ideas, either through passivity, or actual teachings. It is insidious.

    Stella, your photo for today is lovely. Found out some things not known before when I googled it…in Czech, the city is called Praha, not Prague as we know it. And it’s not the Czech Republic anymore, but Czechia.

      Prague is a beautiful city, you can still see its grandeur when you visit, we used to drive in from Nuremberg. Of course then the entire city was a Communist heap and soot and neglect were everywhere. Now the city’s being restored and returned to its former elegance.

      I found out that some period movies are made there because the old city is so unspoiled. Outlander Season 2 filmed there to represent Paris in the 18th century.

      I was in Western Europe during that summer, traveling by Europass with my brother. I’m sure my parents were concerned about their two teenagers in what appeared to be an unstable place, since they had lived through WWII. Their only contact with us was postcards we sent. Fortunately they had instilled a huge fear of getting into trouble into me during my early years, & it never occurred to me to go anywhere near that. I recall a young woman we met who was from there, talking about going back to help; seemed like she was recruiting other teenagers.

        ‘Willing suspension of disbelief’…they film where they get the best deal. New Orleans/Louisiana gives the industry mucho tax breaks it isn’t unusual for us to see places we recognize in NOLA portrayed as someplace else. Ditto when it’s easier to film someplace else in the state and say it’s NOLA. We had a theater just outside of NOLA in a bedroom community that served mixed drinks – made the willing suspension a lot easier.

      I read a book not long ago set in Prague. Parts of it played out in Josefov, the old Jewish Quarter and mentioned the Old New Synagogue, and the legend of the Golem of Prague.

      It was so intriguing that I read up a little on Prague, and Josefov, and even the rabbi who allegedly created the Golem. Fun and interesting reading.

    I just “found” this news aggregating site, thanks to a commenter at PJMedia. It has a wide variety of info & is presented in such a way that you know what you’re in for (video, news/source/, tweet, etc).     Well, it looks like it’s, yet again, time to find another browser. It looks like Brave is broken.

    I cannot go full-screen on YouTube videos AT YouTube, but I can on embedded videos at sites like this. The full-screen button at the bottom-right does absolutely nothing when I click it. I discovered this the other day.

    This morning, right here, I discovered that right-clicking a link and selecting “Open link in new tab” does absolutely nothing now, too. This is a brand new development. Nope, no new tab for you. I can click the link, and it will take me there (and away from here), but not a new tab.

    Why can’t we have things that work?

    This browser was perfect for the last year or so — why did they have to send it to the Suck Department and have them make it suck?

    Oh, because that’s the new paradigm in all companies, now. Even Brave. Sad!

    “We have a perfect product! Hmm…, that’s bad. How can we make it suck somehow? Send it to the Suck Department and have them disable something, so we can keep people employed making the new version with those things fixed, and other Suck added in their place.”

      Take Mr. Coffee. The only container in the last 6,000 years that dribbles down the side of the pot when you pour it, every single time. Best pour your cup over the sink. How and why is this possible? Are Mr. Coffee in cahoots with the paper towel industry? Who designed their coffee pot with that little lip that looks to any normal person like it’s designed for pouring? Why do they still have a job? Was that little lip designed by the Suck Department at Mr. Coffee so that they could then up-sell their more expensive version?

      I don’t know. But, line up 25 random containers of coffee on a long table with a white linen tablecloth, and the biggest, and probably ONLY stain, will be under the Mr. Coffee pot. Not the milk jug, not the coffee can, not the glass or the beer bottle or the milk carton.

      I don’t honestly know what I would do if I found the person who designed the Mr. Coffee pot, but I would probably end up in court.

        my Lord Wooly but that is exactly my own feeling…..I put a tray with a high lip UNDER the Mr. Coffee in case the pot got set in wrong, or the darn thing decided to burp…but filling the water always spills from the carafe as well as pouring coffee from the carafe always spills.

        Chinese torture of the US adult population comes to mind.

          The pot was probably made in China with the approval of the communist government. Plan A…drive American coffee drinkers nuts making for an easier take-over! LOL!

          I’m searching for the perfect large ceramic tea pot that DOESN’T dribble. I’ve found plenty two cuppers, but no five or six cups. Aarrgghhhh!

            I have an antique chocolate pot and I would absolutely bet it is about that size. Just a different shape than a tea pot. Could you use one of those? The sets are beautiful, and some have tiny chocolate cups, but mine has large cups.

              I’ll check those out. I’m always on the lookout in antique stores. My L.A. gal friends and I would go all over southern CA antiquing and then stop for tea somewhere. Great times!

                Most of them are very beautiful. I love mine, but I’m about to box it up for one of the granddaughters. Another gets the antique tea set, and I have already put away my very lovely crystal champagne and wine glasses that belonged to my great grandmother for Sadie.

                I’m giving all the old glassware to my granddaughters before we move. I also have a small collection of hat pins, and tiny perfume bottles, most from the Victorian era. I loved some of the collectibles from that time, and they looked nice in the home we had before the cabin. I have lost the desire to keep them, but I want to keep the glassware I inherited in our family, and hope my granddaughters will care for it.

        ROFL…. Mr. Coffee is also the only brand of coffee pot that I have ever owned that started itself on fire. I used to set the timer on my coffee pots so there was a delightfully hot, dribbling pot of coffee waiting for me at the end of my work day.

        After the fact knowledge, one evening the timer malfunctioned. I came home to a whole lot of smoke, a coffee machine that had been “flash” melted and the paper towel that had been sitting next to Mr. Coffee, in anticipation of that night’s dribble, had gone up in flames.

        I’m not a big fan of the brand myself. :0)

        Yeah, I haven’t found one cheap dribbler pot that doesn’t pour poor. Then again there’s out Keurig that eats up more counter space than the microwave and doesn’t do any better coffee than the $19 Walmart dribbler.

      Brave has been slower than molasses on my Netbook, and it’s been that way since I installed it. I haven’t changed or uninstalled it because I don’t use the netbook all the time.

      Sometimes it’s two steps forward, one step backwards.

      I’ll put in a new feature or fix one bug only to find that I’ve broken another feature, caused a new bug, or paved the way to encountering a bug that’s been there forever.

      A pioneer in the industry, Dykstra maybe, said that a test programs and procedures are adequate to demonstrate the presence of bugs, but woefully inadequate to demonstrate their absence.

      I use Brave a lot, and sometimes it’s funky, but there are updates that fix the funkies, though sometimes creating new funkies.

        Sometimes it isn’t the browser, but changes in the software on the sites you use most often. I have had periodic problems with WordPress and compatibility with various browsers, including Internet Explorer and Firefox. Just change to another browser to see if it helps, and it usually does.

    Just finished reading the cover article for Time magazine dated Jan. 29th, “The Avengers”. It is solely about women running for office (from small, local offices & up to Congress) supported by Democrtic/liberal focused groups. I certainly hope there are some groups supporting conservative women who would also vie for those elected positions, as well as the appointed ones.

    Mornin’ all! Pretty big earthquake here last night, 7.9. Happened about 12:30 am, centered in the Gulf of Alaska, 181 miles southeast of Kodiak, and 6 miles deep. I’m guessing that’s about 300 miles from me. I was sound asleep and it woke me up but didn’t seem particularly fearsome. Tsunami warning sirens went off in Homer and Seward, and people evacuated to higher ground. That’s not an issue so much for us on the west side of the Kenai Peninsula, as we’re on a 100-foot bluff above Cook Inlet. Tsunami warning was cancelled about 4 am. Have not heard yet of any damages.

      I’m glad there were no damages. We had an earthquake near where I live in Indiana years ago now. Very interesting experience. :/ No one was hurt that I heard of, and I actually didn’t even feel the aftershock.

        We’ve had 17 aftershocks so far that were greater then 5. Those didn’t wake me up. Earthquakes are an interesting experience of helplessness. Nothing reminds you more quickly that it’s all up to God.

        Yeah, it’s driving me crazy. Old Dog rarely sleeps past 5 am and once he’s up he’s gotta go RIGHT NOW. DH and I take turns getting up with him; there’s no going back to bed, sleep is done. Between this and the constantly dripping urine, I’m at my wit’s end with Old Dog. But otherwise he is vigorous and active. You’d never know he is 16 to look at him. Don’t know how much longer I can put up with it.

            Thanks czar. The vet checked him out a couple of years ago when the problem started. Said it’s just because he’s old, there’s no treatment, it’ll probably get worse with time. Which it has. Used to be just when he was excited about getting fed; now it’s pretty much all the time. Drip, drip, drip everywhere he goes. Then there’s the turds which fall out of his butt when he walks without his even noticing. He doesn’t see them (nearly blind and half deaf), then steps in them and tracks all over. I’ve had him since the day he was born, and I love him. But. He’s wearin’ me out.

          we have masses of Natures Miracle spray to kill dog odor where there are “accidents” and lots of paper towels. Just me, and not preachy at all…but my fellows and girls have given my whole family so much love, companionship, and entertainment for their entire life, that when they get 14 or so….which is about 98 human years…I have to pretend they are my grandparent and just wipe up and hug them anyway….the rainbow bridge always comes way too soon for me.

            So far that’s been our M.O. as well. But his vigor suggests he could live another year or two. That’s more than I can contemplate living with this. And yet I can’t execute him for being inconvenient. So here we are.

              My neighbor’s old dachshund has just started this behavior. The dog was also diagnosed with congestive heart failure – so on top of the incontinence issue, she has to give her pooch lasix which is making the problem worse. She’s using doggy diapers and it is making things a little more tolerable for both her and the dog. She is using disposable, but apparently there are also washable versions available.

                dachs are such sweeties….love them, have a female rescue one right now…mostly they get back trouble that is serious, and easily overweight.

                My plan is to have her create a Russian Dossier by peeing on the Australian Cattledog’s bed mattress and sick the FBI on her when she starts the leaking act….

      Saw that…wondering if you’d had any major shocks at your shop. I was in Moscow for the ’64 quake, remember sitting in the embassy looking at the damages and still have those images and sweat each time I hear of a quake up there.

        In 1964 most all of Moscow looked like it was earthquake damaged anyway…..what a dreary place….

        Now I toured East Berlin in 1962, and everything still looked like it was bombed the day before….

        We are not used to really old cities in the USA like Europe has held onto…..

          Our house is 40 years old and my wife complains about its age. People complain about aging, dilapidated schools that aren’t that old, yet I graduated from the same Iowa High School where my Mom graduated in the 1940s. I visited it in 2008 and it’s still the same, except it now has a computer lab. Solid two story concrete block and brick building, same waxed and buffed tile floors, same steel lockers lining the hallways, same water fountains. Well maintained; no graffiti.

          I went to Meiningen, in the old East Germany in 1999 with my MIL & her sister. It was 10 years post the end of the communist rule, & reunification of Germany, but when we went off the Main Street in town, everything looked like it had at the end of WWII. Bombing & earthquake aftermath are a lot alike.

          The Russian purposely keft much of the DDR and East Berlin in a crappy state, they hated Germany for the damages it had imposed on Russia in WWII and wanted it punished. The DDR could have been primed and allowed to reconstitute much as the West did but the Russians didn’t need or want that, primary function of the Bloc was to wear down the West in a war of attrition and provide a place to fight NATO off of Russian soil to prevent a WWI and WWII redux of the damages done to Russia. Look how fast the East reunited and blossomed after it rejoined the West.

      I wonder if it was felt in the west Idaho panhandle because it seemed to me there was an earthquake around that time last night. I’m convinced that bodies of humans who have lived in Los Angeles are especially attuned to earthquakes. Having been through both the 1971 and 1994 L.A. quakes, it makes me shiver just thinking of them, especially the 1994…I’ll never forget that one. My big old brass bed was bouncing around like it was a cot.

        It was felt as far away as Fairbanks, about a thousand miles; Coer d’Alene is about 1400 miles, so seems possible. I was in LA from ’74 to ’80, but only remember one and it was less than 5.0.

    I’ve kind of been out of the loop, but just heard about a real estate broker out of Wisconsin that put himself in some hot water. Right after a oil well explosion in Oklahoma and 5 were missing, presumed dead he commented he hoped they were Republicans.

    I just checked out his FB page and he’s learning not all people are heartless liberals who find such comments funny. He’s an older man by looking at his picture, you’d think he’d be old enough to know better.
    I guess though at his age there is no hope for his liberal disease.

        He deleted his FB, shut down all of his phones and now they’ve locked up his e-mail.

        Before he removed his FB I went back on some old posts and they were about transgenders, racists, evil Republicans, his friends mainly were more liberals with upside down flags for their profile picture.

      I was brought up to be considerate to the elderly. (Loved my grandma more than anyone!) What I’m finding is that a lot of the hippies from the 60’s are now old, really nasty, evil, bitter, and want to spread that negativity around.

        When my oldest son worked in fast food restaurants in the eighties he and I used to get into some arguments over his attitude about old people. He said they were liars, cheats, and griped about everything to get free food, and almost always got a meal they had already eaten for free. I felt he was an intolerant teenager.

        Fast forward to my retail management career. I found out he was right, and I stand by my attitude. A huge percentage of elderly customers do lie, cheat, and manipulate things to get free stuff and discounts. Many of them are exceedingly dishonest, rude, and I wish we could have thrown them out and banned them.

          Interesting that even back then oldsters were like that. In 1985 if they were 65 or 75, they would have been born in 1910 or 1920 and age 25 around 1940. My grandparents were older – born before and after turn of last century, and would never even consider acting like that – neither would my parents for that matter. There are liars and cheats in every decade and century, though the past 50-60 year moral decline has worn the veneer of civilization thinner going backwards to a less desirable time.

          This is also true of certain immigrant ethnic groups as well…..nothing is ever good enough, cheap enough, the right color or size, or available for delivery yesterday and installed for free up four flights of stairs and into a 24 inch doorway.

          Retail today sucks with the rude and impatient public and the shoddy merchandise we sell from China.

          The young kids working there do not help it much either.

    Just watching a piece on the noon news about the Oscars…no, I was eating Spanish rice and couldn’t reach thec remote.
    The black talking head was going on about how after last year’s revolt by forward thinking celebs regarding how the awards were ‘too white’ the industry has embraced diversity and inclusiveness by opening up a wider variety of roles to formerly overlooked actors. Awards this year will finally be more representative of the historically overlooked members of the arts.
    Nothing in the entire spiel about the quality of everyones’ works being measured on an objective scale, just that certain folks not having been awarded honors at what others take as a subjective quantity has to be redressed. No winners, no losers, just awardees.
