Y’all see the pictures of Oprah, standing in her commoner clothes (great makeup and hair though) and pointing out how her California mansion and her 55-acre compound were damaged by the mudslides just like those of the common millionaires she lives next to? And so the endless free news soundbite ‘Oprah For President’ exposure begins.

Its one of the most expensive homes there too, or used to be. My grandmother used to live just north of santa barbara. I drove past montecito for many years. As much as we did go to santa barbara, we never went to montecito. I guess locals didnt care much for the place either. Pretty but too rich and exclusive.

She should pick Bruce Springsteen as her running mate, just a mother commoner.
She won’t run, she is not going to put her life and finances on display.

She could go for the whole enchilada and pick Barry as VP. They are both Rev Wright followers, have Chicago roots, have publicly railed against Christianity and, I believe, both would secretly like to see certain people with European backgrounds publicly burned at the stake. Then there’s her Weinstein support…

I think Barry would be ineligible.
The only restrictions on who may sit as Vice-President are enumerated in the 12th Amendment, which states that “no person constitutionally ineligible to the office of President shall be eligible to that of Vice-President of the United States.”

Yup, forgot about that but both Barry and Reagan floated the idea of changing that and allowing a third term. Apparently there wasn’t enough interest to make that happen.

Would be difficult, since it is in the Constitution.

They were fishing for a change to the Amendment, seeing if public sentiment would support a change. Seems to have fallen on deaf ears in both cases.

Since I figure he was ineligible the first time around he would be doubly ineligible the second. 🙄

The area in the city is really built up and lots and lots of uncleared, dead, and old growth . Lots of eucalyptus trees, scrub, pine.
LikeLiked by 1 person
I noticed the guy on the cable weather channel hasn’t mentioned again how the state’s and Fed’s folks are heavily responsible for some of the fires as they aren’t cleaning up the flammable trash that accumulates on the ground, not having controlled burns and not planting more fire resistant native plants.
When I saw the pictures and maps of the burned areas it was obvious to me that any winter rains would cause mudslides, Czarina and I were talking about it. Guess the authorities decided that trying to mitigate the inevitable was not viable.

They wont spend the money for it. Its one of the most expensive places to live too and they dont do that. Lots of illegals taking the buses in to work, homeless beggars, UC Santa barbara students, really rich hollywood people use the area as their playground…
LikeLiked by 1 person
There was a great study done years ago on how at one time in the past Ca had so many oak trees the mast from them heavily supplemented the diets of millions of natives. So many were cut down for timber, firewood and general clearing, replaced by trash trees/brush and non-natives that the fire dangers increased.
Either way they need a few real farmers around to get the job done right. I’ll burn in late winter but will almost immediately overseed to get some growth to slow runoff. Then again the only major downslope erosion around here’s county property so maybe we ain’t all that different.
LikeLiked by 1 person
I know lots of areas that have burned will have native plants come up since they needed fire to germinate. I just drove around the Lilac fire area, in northern san diego county and it was really unbelievable. I showed my son what it looked like. Its another wildland area with severely steep land that was for avocado grives and horse ranches, now lots of homes, and lots of old growth trees and brush.
LikeLiked by 1 person
I’m on a slope and we’ve planted pensacola grass, its roots go down feet and even when I burn it off late winter there’s enough above and below ground to slow water movement. You’d think that a state that KNOWS fires lead to huge mudslides would tackle the problem. Ditto an environmentally manic state that has enough spare cash to fund some really weird stuff. Then we have the super rich whom I might suggest should have enough cash in their couch cushions to deal with these problems locally.

Good Morning Nyet. Thanks for Breakfast! Hello Fello Stellars!
“Food these days is often identified as the enemy. Butter, salt, sugar, eggs are all out to get you. And yet at our best we know better. Butter is…well, butter: it glorifies almost everything it touches. Salt is the sovereign perfecter of all flavors. Eggs are, pure and simple, one of the wonders of the world. And if you put them all together, you get not sudden death, but Hollandaise – which in its own way is not one bit less a marvel than the Gothic arch, the computer chip, or a Bach fugue.” ~Robert Farrar Capon, The Feast of the Lamb

Morning everyone! Have a Deplorable Day! While my job hunt goes on, so does my writing project! (I have a new book to read about the matter, so on goes the research!) I’m really beginning to have the sneaking suspicion that as far as some people are concerned, only three things happened in WWII: The Holocaust, Japan getting nuked, and America was mean to Japanese people who lived on US soil.

You forgot how WWII was the US’s fault in both the Pacific and European theaters. Oh yeah, and lets all just forget about the thousands upon thousands of allied POWs that Churchill and FDR gave to the Soviets.

LOL come on czar. If I wanna hear that WWII was all America’s fault, I can get those opinions elsewhere. I don’t know how someone could spin it so that the war was all America’s fault, but I’m sure some aspiring liberal star somewhere has an explanation of America’s guilt for starting WWII.
Do you think that Churchill wanted to have anything to do with letting the Soviets have prisoners or territory after the war? According to the Last Best Hope, Churchill was really suspicious of Stalin and did not like the guy at all. It was FDR who whole- heartedly embraced that “enemy of my enemy is my friend” nonsense. I am wondering how much of that stuff Churchill just had to go along with, because it really sounds like there was no changing FDR’s mind about Russia.

Easy, internationalists talk about how the US battered Japan in trans-Pacific trade and bullied it with its baval might – ergo Pearl Harbor.
In Europe there are multiple excuses from the reparations demanded of Germany in payment for WWI, the US loans that kept the German economy propped up, the ripple effect of the US Depression hitting Germany, the Smoot-Hawley tariff…and they go on and on, all depends upon which apologist is delivering the justification.
FDR loved Stalin so much he must have found a way to cook him. Churchill was most likely seeing the Allies burned out after a second major war in just over twenty years and was unable to risk a war with Russia so returning a few thousand Dawn Cossack families for execution and abandoning over 20-thousand Allied POWs to the Russians was a small price to pay. After all the Russians had faces and ablated Hitler on the Eastern Front for years while the

…Allies regrouped. The Allies also reneged on a promise to open the front in 1942, moving it to 1943 and finally 1944…Stalin was very unhappy. Stalin lost many men during those years and that limited their potential post-war recovery and I always felt Roosevelt and Churchill thought their letting Stalin keep those POWs, already considered ‘lost’, would provide Russia with some manpower to help rebuild and divert Russian expansionism from beyond the agreed upon Bloc ‘gifts’ the Allies gave Russia.
The issue of the unaccounted for Allied POWs will probably never be resolved, no one really cares now and if DoD and State hasn’t burned the relevant documents they’re buried in the National Archives right in the next row over from the Arc of the Covenant.

It disturbs me that the State Department is again involved in the inability of Americans to come home It’s nice to find, again, that in this war nothing is ever simple. I am wondering: shouldn’t the fact that Stalin was at one time Hitler’s ally have been a red flag to the rest of the Allies? (Or I am getting the two wars mixed up?)
Last Best Hope actually talks about a meeting where FDR accepted Stalin’s invitation to stay at the Russian house of lodging, whatever it was over, over Churchill’s protests. LBH helpfully points out that this meant that FDR was staying someplace the Russians had already bugged.
What does Dawn Cossack refer to? Google drew a blank on it.
LikeLike
My error, I’m typing away and didn’t notice my spellcheck changed Don to Dawn. For a short-and-sweet on the Cossack Repatriation see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Repatriation_of_Cossacks_after_World_War_II
State’s been complicit in the US’s abandonment of POWs in WW II, Korea, Vietnam and the Cold War. Once the war ends POWs cease to become members of the US military and become items of diplomacy. I didn’t realize the extent to which US POWs were abandoned after Korea and a friend who worked the issue peripherally during Vietnam clued me in on how many were abandoned as they fell into Chinese hands or were relocated to Russia…never mind the ones lost in Cambodia and Laos. Yet another reason I despise Kissinger.
Stalin was never Hitler’s ‘ally’, at best he was a co-conspirator in the Polish invasion. He was using his military engineers to pre-prepare defensive positions to delay and repel a foreseen German invasion years before he inked the Polish invasion deal with Hitler. Stalin used the threat of pending war with Germany as a major justification for the Great Purge years before the Polish invasion…nope, definitely not buds.

I was looking for something different and found this: Checkers by Vic Vicini
Vic Vicini:
I attended Wayne State University and received a BFA in printmaking and painting. I was influenced by artist such as Richard Estes and Andrew Wyeth. Early in my career I focused on etching and engravings and exhibited throughout the Midwest.
Early in the 1990’s I had the opportunity to meet the well known egg tempera painter Robert Vickrey at an opening. His detailed renderings in egg tempera played a huge influenced on me. I experimented for a number of years in egg tempera and really enjoyed the science of the art.
For the past decade or so, I rediscovered oil and have not looked backed. My subject matter focuses on objects of nostalgia. My parents both came from San Marino, Italy and you can imagine food was a big part of my upbringing. I enjoyed the culture of my heritage but my ambition as a youth was to discover America and all its charm. Memories of a typical American breakfast or dinner as a kid, going to little diners with my Dad and helping my little Italian Grandmother in the kitchen are things that are in my thoughts when I paint my still life’s. Whether its vintage cars, rusted out tools, old toasters or retro objects, diners or retro food packaging art, these are thoughts and images that play a strong influence in my art. It seems that if its old and retro and or in the kitchen or tool shed, more than likely I will put it on canvas.

Thanks G&C. How difficult it must be to paint objects ‘in reflection’ on so many different curved surfaces. Amazing.

🙂 You’re welcome! I agree curved reflection is tough! Reflection I can do, but the curved part – UGH!
I posted below about using links to artist’s bio’s. You’ll be able to read a more complete bio. 😉

Artistry & creativity of some people simply amazes me. About all I can draw is a three dimensional box.

This is amazing! I have only done sugar “branches” and flowers.
But Hey! It takes practice to draw a 3 dimensional box – not kidding! Once you have that you can add to it, and draw a lot more 🙂 Take up architectural drawing as a hobby – some of it is beautiful. Don’t sell yourself short! 🙂

Czarina, some years back, made a dragon costume complete with stuffed tail for the GGS to wear on Halloween. He outgrew it the same year but we’re gonna save it for Mac when he’s big enough for it.

Good old California has once again legislated itself into a corner. Its plan to increase the minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2022 for businesses with 26 or more employees and to $15 by 2023 for those with fewer has produced its obvious results – employees are being replaced by robots: http://www.foxnews.com/food-drink/2018/01/10/jack-in-box-ceo-swapping-cashiers-for-robots-makes-sense-due-to-minimum-wage-increase.html
They were warned, the big two burger chains both announced that were minimum wages increased they’d be forced to look at automating stores and reducing bodies. Both of them announced that they were researching and developing systems but the legislature went ahead anyway – here they come.
I doubt the companies announcing a limited automation will not continue to incrementally replace human ‘software’, the initial partial automation will just serve to get the camel’s nose into the tent. There will have to be a warm body or two around just to be there if there’s a glitch but you’re going to see increased automation.
One of the rubs will be that the companies should be able to turn the machines into tax deductions, basically having the same government that forced the foodies to automate will be partially paying for them. Machines won’t be subject to labor laws (at least not yet in Ca) and will be a help in maintaining that thinning profit margin in the fast food business. I think the ability of the larger chains to afford automated systems will help decrease the new startups who’ll have to choose the expense of increasingly bodies or automation on a limited scale. As long as it doesn’t hurt my Popeye’s I’m OK with it.

From Don Surber:
Doesn’t look like amnesty is happening
Sometimes I get ahead of readers, so I must apologize for not freaking out over President Trump’s meeting with congressional leaders over granting amnesty to 800,000 illegal aliens who claim they were abducted and brought here as children.
I went over all this on Saturday, and I thought everyone understood. But OK, let us go over this again.
President Trump has already won this battle. He won the battle in September when he said he would enforce the law, which means deporting all illegal aliens including this crew. He gave Congress six months to give this set of criminals amnesty.
In Washington-ese, they are DACA — protected by an imaginary law that Barack Obama invented. Incredibly, a federal judge in California upheld Obama’s imaginary law.
President Trump has won this battle, though. Congress has to pass a bill on amnesty and (and this is very important) get him to sign it into law,
I suppose it is possible that Congress would do that.
But the price Trump would exact is not only astronomical but astrological as well. He would get the wall, the end of chain immigration, the end of the visa lottery, reductions in refugees, reductions in legal aliens, and the reduction of green cards.
Trump holds all the trump cards in this hand. He wins before he goes into battle.
I wrote about this on Saturday, “Trump just won on DACA.”
He met with Congress and let the cameras roll as he held court for 55 minutes without giving them an inch.
The Washington Examiner reported, “Democrats ‘nervous’ after confusing White House meeting on DACA fix.”
Nervous? Try humiliated.

Well, that sounds promising, but until construction starts on the wall, I won’t believe it. Until they start deporting people en masse, I won’t believe it.
I was appalled, absolutely appalled, to learn a few years ago that this country did give law breakers amnesty and in exchange there should have been a wall at the border. But somehow the amnesty part went through and the wall never got built.

Problem I see is all of the illegals that received amnesty and citizenship to vote in prior presidential elections.

Hello fellow Stellars 🙂
I am falling way behind in work, and too much computer use is affecting my eyesight. My eyesight being affected by reading too many comments at the Treehouse is one of the two reasons I came here.
I really enjoy posting paintings and pictures, and will continue to do so, but I will be using links to artists bio’s rather than spending my limited computer time cutting down a multi-page bio to ½ a page. I would rather spend my time responding to you!
I will not be able to respond to posts as I usually do. I have 2 pairs of glasses on my irritated eyes as I write this! You are truly a wonderful, witty, and kind group of people which I enjoy tremendously. I would love to respond to you all, but my eyesight has worsened, so I’ll just do a lot of “lurking” – OH MY! that doesn’t sound nice!.
See you all tomorrow and have a great day! 🙂

Today’s daily Bible verse from biblegatewaycom is Psalm 118:5-6…
5 When trouble surrounded me, I cried out to the Eternal;
He answered me and brought me to a wide, open space.
6 The Eternal is with me,
so I will not be afraid of anything.
If God is on my side, how can anyone hurt me?

Panettone update. So I cut into one of the loaves last night – several hours earlier than recommended, and as I told S&S, it was pretty good. By this morning, however, after everything had a chance to ‘get happy’, it was outstanding. (At the beginning of this project I was planning to make a fruity panettone, but the fruit didn’t get here in time, and since I had really good chocolate here, I went with chocolate. Turns out this was the way it was supposed to happen.)
Fast forward through the day and a second batch of panettone started. Ran errands, fixed lunch for the mother unit; a ‘get shtuff done’ kind of day.
The carpenter shows up with the invoice for the porch job. He told me he’d bring the invoice before Christmas, but he also told me that the porch would be finished by Thanksgiving, so yeah, everything is on what I fondly refer to as Tommy Time.
Anyway, Tommy and I are out making a punch list on little things that will be addressed when the weather is warmer. Mom knows he’s here, so writes a check for the remainder of the job cost. The check amount also includes an extra couple of hundred dollars for all the time he didn’t estimate when we began the project….like putting together a giant jigsaw puzzle on the ceiling. Mom just pulled a number and added it in.
So we came inside and I said, Mom, you need to write a check. She said, I already have – it was within a hundred dollars of the new invoice price. I’m giving him a bit of a hard time, but also cutting a slice of panettone for him (he’s a bread freak…like me). We get to an agreement that he’s going to discount the invoice to match the check, we’re finished with business, and he takes a bite of panettone.
He gasped, his mouth fell open and his eyes filled with tears. No kidding. He said, “This is It. This is what I was looking for!”
Apparently, his mom used to order a chocolate panettone for him every Christmas. This year, he was desperate to find one – but he couldn’t remember what it was called. He asked all his relatives what it was called, where his mom used to order it from, etc. and no one knew.
I cried right along with him. It made my whole week. And illustrated to me, once again, that when things don’t happen just the way you want them to (the fruit didn’t arrive) it isn’t always a horror to change your plans (make someone’s dream come true with chocolate instead…)
That’s my amazing story for the day. I’m still smiling about the whole thing and how it unfolded. And grateful for prayers answered, blessings received.

lilbirdee12’s prayer:
Our Heavenly Father, Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.
Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.
Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump and Mike Pence and their families as they seek to lead America back to You.
Grant us patience, Lord, as the evil ones try to anger us and cause us to fall.
Spread blessings over Israel and Netanyahu.
We humbly ask that You please comfort those who are grieving and in pain.
Thank you Father, for Your Love and the gift of Life.
In Jesus name, we pray. Amen.
