    Stella, seeing your New Zealand photo of the Tranz Alpine Scenic Train, it reminded me of a film not thought of in probably 50 years, “Until they Sail”–a 1957 film starring Paul Newman and Jean Simmons, set during World War II and about the U. S. military “invasion” of New Zealand as part of an agreement between Churchill and Roosevelt to defend that part of the United Kingdom. It’s one of the typical melodramas (with enough tragedy and romance to go around) that Newman starred in during his early film career. But I thought it ever so wonderful when I first saw it as a teenager…uber romantic little soul that I was. LOL!

        Morning, sand! I love those old soap opera movies. Newman looks sooo young…when he still had his pouty visage. LOL!

        Shows what a good actor he was that he learned to control his look. The difference between his early years and, say, THE VERDICT, is immense…that ability to leave the “acting” behind and become a character that is completely believable…in the biz that’s called “inhabiting the role.”

          My DD and I recently watched The Shop Around The Corner. It was so good! The newer version is the Meg Ryan, You’ve Got Mail. Both are great, but I thoroughly enjoyed the original. I’m going to have to take up watching older movies. Great entertainment without the language and “other” stuff.

            If you haven’t seen the following, these are some of my favorites: “Rachel and the Stranger” starring Loretta Young/William Holden/Robert Mitchum (1948) – drama about pioneer days in Ohio where a widower (Holden) marries an indentured servant (Young) to help with rearing his son and run the farm. A non-PC film with marauding Indians.

            “The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer” starring Cary Grant/Shirley Temple/Myrna Loy (1947) – comedy rearding a teenager (Temple) with an innocent crush on an older man (Grant) and the havoc that causes. Hilarious plot which wouldn’t be PC today either.

            “Laura” starring Gene Tierney/Dana Andrews/Clifton Webb (1944) – mystery about a beautiful advertising executive’s death and the detective (Andrews) assigned to investigate it.

    Today’s painting is Saved (1856) by Sir Edwin Henry Landseer

    So popular & influential were Landseer’s paintings of dogs in the service of humanity that the name Landseer came to be the official name for the variety of Newfoundland dog that is both black & white. It was this variety Landseer popularised in his paintings celebrating Newfoundlands as water rescue dogs, including Saved (1856). The paintings combine the Victorian concept of childhood with the appealing idea of noble animals devoted to humankind, a devotion indicated in Saved, by the fact the dog has rescued the child without any apparent human involvement.

    Sir Edwin Henry Landseer (1802 – 1873) was an English painter & sculptor, well known for his paintings of animals, particularly horses, dogs & stags. However, his best known works are the lion sculptures in Trafalgar Square. Landseer was born in London, the son of the engraver John Landseer. He was something of a prodigy whose artistic talents were recognised early on. He studied under several artists, including his father. Benjamin Robert Haydon, encouraged the young Landseer to perform dissections in order to fully understand animal musculature & skeletal structure. Landseer was rumoured to be able to paint with both hands at the same time, for example, paint a horse’s head with the right & its tail with the left, simultaneously. He was also known to be able to paint extremely quickly when the mood struck him. He could also procrastinate, sometimes for years. At the age of just 13 he exhibited works at the Royal Academy. He was elected an Associate at the age of 24, & an Academician five years later in 1831. He was knighted in 1850, & although elected President in 1866 he declined the invitation. Landseer’s works can be found in Tate Britain, the Victoria & Albert Museum, Kenwood House & the Wallace Collection.
    Much of his fame & his income was generated by the publication of engravings of his work, many of them by his brother Thomas. His appeal crossed class boundaries: reproductions of his works were common in middle-class homes, while he was also popular with the aristocracy. Queen Victoria commissioned numerous pictures from the artist. In the year before her marriage, the queen commissioned a portrait of herself, as a present for Prince Albert. He taught both Victoria & Albert to etch, & made portraits of Victoria & Albert, and their children as babies usually in the company of a dog. He also made a life-size equestrian portrait of the Queen, shown at the Royal Academy in 1873. Landseer was associated with Scotland & the Highlands which provided the subjects for many of his paintings.

    In 1858 the government commissioned Landseer to make four bronze lions for the base of Nelson’s Column in Trafalgar Square. Landseer accepted on condition that he would not have to start work for another nine months, & there was a further delay when he asked to be supplied with copies of casts of a real lion he knew were in Turin. The casts did not arrive until the summer of 1860. The lions were made at the Kensington studio of Carlo Marochetti, who also cast them. Work was slowed by Landseer’s ill health, & his fractious relationship with Marochetti. The sculptures were installed in 1867.

    In his late 30s Landseer suffered what is now believed to be a substantial nervous breakdown, & for the rest of his life was troubled by recurring bouts of melancholy, hypochondria, & depression, often aggravated by alcohol & drug use. Some of Landseer’s later works are pessimistic in tone. In the last few years of his life Landseer’s mental stability was problematic, & at the request of his family he was declared insane in July 1872. Landseer’s death on 1 October 1873 was widely observed in England.

    CHAPEL HILL, NC – For the first time, scientists at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine and collaborators solved the crystal structure of the activated kappa opioid receptor bound to a morphine derivative. They then created a new drug-like compound that activates only that receptor, a key step in the development of better pain medications.

    The research, published in the journal Cell, shows a route toward creating opioids that relieve pain without causing the severe side effects at the heart of the opioid epidemic.

    Currently, most opioids bind to several opioid receptors on the surface of cells, and this is one of the main reasons why opioids relieve severe pain but also trigger a wide range of side effects from nausea, numbness, and constipation to anxiety, severe dependency, hallucinations, and even death caused by respiratory depression.

    “To create better opioids, we need to know the structure of their receptors,” said senior author Bryan Roth, MD, PhD, the Michael Hooker Distinguished Professor of Protein Therapeutics and Translational Proteomics in the Department of Pharmacology at UNC-Chapel Hill. “Until recently, this was impossible. But now we know the structure of the activated kappa opioid receptor. And we showed we can actually use the structure to make a drug-like compound with better properties than current opioids.”

        A response on Facebook: I was once on lots of pain meds to include a high dosage of Oxycontin. About 5 years ago, I felt led by God to flush them all down the toilet and start over. I DO take pain meds today but nothing like 5 years ago. My daughter said to me that she never expected to have her mother back. I would be so hopeful for a new, non-narcotic pain med. I think many older people are like I used to be, over-prescribed. Think of it like a bar and you’ve had a few too many drinks. Same thing and I think that most doctors are trying to be responsive to our needs. Oxycontin was supposed to be the best thing ever and non-addictive. OOOPS.

          Oxy’s been a drug of choice for decades. There’s a good use for it, as I’ve said before many farmers, ranchers and loggers here don’t have paid sick leave, they work for themselves and in occupations where the get hurt. Under those conditions you get hurt, don’t work, you don’t make money. More than a few of them need a strong pain killer to work.
          Pharma is responsible too, they reformulated the Oxy to make it easier to abuse and neither Congress nor the bought-and-paid-for FDA will attack pharma. Morphine was created to help reduce opium addiction, heroin was imported originally to reduce morphine addiction, methadone likewise. Let’s see what wonder drug pharma comes up with this time that lessens pain with less addictive qualities.

        Its a routinely red area. In fact, if you widen the map east and north, san diego, riverside, orange, and a lesser extent san bernardino have been red, reliably so. The fact that areas have completely flipped or are battleground areas is extremely bad news for these nicer conservative areas that have been holdouts. Illegals are rampant and the cartel activity is bad.

        I looked at past district 49 election results and it teeters back and forth between Republican and Rat. I imagine a smart Rat strategist would work on packing Rat minions into the district though CA’s fast becoming pure Rat country as it is.

          There were articles in tje paper about illegals being bussed back and forth to vote, it was celebrated as a tribute to power of the people. Only 2 companies own the majority of all the socal newspapers. Leftist or sjw with some conservative leanings for thise that atill pay for the papers. Tons of pro illegal sob stories, pro marijuana, pro union, pro politicians and educatiin admins…and the papers obviously collude to prevent info from getting out there otherwise.
          I am in an island area, like many. But the water is rising.

            Bussing illegal voters around is an old and honored Rat tactic. Bussing voters around in NOLA used to be an open practice, only things missing were floats and marching bands – yet the local news all ignored it.
            I have no idea how, once the Rat wranglers are outnumbered by their wranglerees they’ll manage to not only keep them in line but keep the flock from eating the shepherds.

    For veterans, the toughest part of a return to civilian life often comes at the very beginning. Veterans in their first year after service are particularly vulnerable to mental health risks but often do not receive adequate care:
    • Only 50 percent of returning service members who need mental health treatment seek it.
    • Veterans 3 to 12 months out of service are 3 times more likely to commit suicide than their active duty compatriots.
    • About 18.5 percent of veterans returning from Iraq or Afghanistan suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder or depression.

    What a great day…….first ..I now have two arms. Hallelujah. If I never have to paint a closet with one arm in a cast again, it will be too soon…..

    and second ….at 4:00 this afternoon, I became the new owner of a bank building that was built in 1900.

    Our Heavenly Father, Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.

    Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.

    Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump and Mike Pence and their families as they seek to lead America back to You.

    Grant us patience, Lord, as the evil ones try to anger us and cause us to fall.
    Spread blessings over Israel and Netanyahu.

    We humbly ask that You please comfort those who are grieving and in pain.
    Thank you Father, for Your Love and the gift of Life.

    In Jesus name, we pray. Amen.

    Today, we ate at a restaurant and some women, about 10 plus several children, who appeared to be muslim, wearing ME dress and many wearing hijabs came in. Some more women joined them. What seemed strange was, since we assumed they were muslim, was that many of them had hamburgers and many had what looked to be alcoholic drinks. Anybody have any thoughts? I was just curious.

      I read somewhere people in Saudi Arabia import massive amounts of hard liquor, in ways the religious enforcers cannot monitor. Many people espousing many religions do not follow all of the tenets/rules of that religion, but pick & choose when they can. Likely, being in the US where they can, they do what they please. No mullah beating women with sticks in Applebee’s.
