    Today’s commentary from Bishop Barron

THE NATIVITY OF THE LORD (CHRISTMAS)

    JOHN 1:1-18

Friends, our Christmas day Gospel focuses on the Word made flesh. Ancient Jewish thought found all sorts of sophisticated ways to say that God was active in the world without ceasing to be transcendent over it. Above all, they spoke of God’s holy Word, a Word by which all things were made.

Now listen to the Prologue to John’s Gospel: “In the beginning was the Word…” He’s writing a new Genesis—and he is drawing our attention to this word of God, this powerful, musical breath of God that makes and governs the universe and speaks through the prophets, this Word that is the same as God.

And this Word became flesh. The Greek term means “pitched his tent among us,” the very phrase used of God’s Wisdom inhabiting the Temple in Jerusalem. “And we saw his glory…and he was full of grace and truth.” Glory, for he is beautiful to look on; truth, for he is the new Law. All the ways that the Old Testament spoke of God’s involvement with the world come together in this description of Jesus Christ. He is the powerful Word that will not return without accomplishing his purpose.

You are all in my prayers, today and every day. Don’t eat too…never mind, no need to be hypocritical.

Glory to God in the highest; and on earth peace to men of good will. Douay-Rheims, Luke 2:14

Most other translations get it exactly wrong. “peace on earth, and good will toward men” — nope. Wrong. Translate, much? Etymology much?

Peace to men of good will.

    • John Denney says:

The tabernacle described in Exodus is a foreshadowing of Christ.

There was one gate, one door. Jesus said, “I am the Door” – John 10:7 & 9
It contained the 7 branched candlestick. Jesus said, “I am the Light”
It contained the table of showbread. Jesus said, “I am the bread of LIfe”
It was gold plated inside, but covered in rams skins. “He had no form or comeliness that we should desire Him” – Isaiah 53
God dwelt in the tabernacle, covered in skin, just as Jesus was God in the flesh, covered in skin.

    One Solitary Life
He was born in an obscure village
The child of a peasant woman
He grew up in another obscure village
Where he worked in a carpenter shop
Until he was thirty when public opinion turned against him
    He never wrote a book
    He never held an office
    He never went to college
He never visited a big city
He never traveled more than two hundred miles
From the place where he was born
He did none of the things
    Usually associated with greatness
He had no credentials but himself
    He was only thirty three
    His friends ran away
    One of them denied him
He was turned over to his enemies
And went through the mockery of a trial
He was nailed to a cross between two thieves
While dying, his executioners gambled for his clothing
The only property he had on earth
    When he was dead
He was laid in a borrowed grave
Through the pity of a friend
Nineteen centuries have come and gone
And today Jesus is the central figure of the human race
And the leader of mankind’s progress
All the armies that have ever marched
All the navies that have ever sailed
All the parliaments that have ever sat
All the kings that ever reigned put together
Have not affected the life of mankind on earth
As powerfully as that one solitary life

Air temp (not windchill) in my former MN home town will be -7 Fahrenheit today. It is trying to get above freezing here in the Willamette Valley in OR this morning. They are saying it should make it there by afternoon. Nasty driving conditions. Worse in eastern OR.

All of you people in genuinely cold country – stay home and stay warm – both if possible.

Merry Christmas indeed! God “did Christmas” for sure and for always. It is He who made Christmas and we attend the celebration.

Back to bed now – I’m cold. Woke up at 5 which is too early!

    • Yesterday, I bought a box of cat litter, and let Tripod in for the next week or so. It’s about to get that cold here. And he’s 14. We just got six inches of snow last night. Yesterday morning the city was bare concrete, now everything is perfectly Christmaslike, and it doesn’t look like it’s about to stop. Tripod is a really happy cat right now.

Last night was gorgeous, outside. It was a midnight snow-globe, with the big flakes falling straight down, in large number, no wind at all. Silence. Like Narnia winter.

This morning, when Tripod woke me up, thinking he wanted to go outside (he changed his mind real quick), it was snowing and blowing and drifting so hard, coming down in great sheets, you could barely see the streetlights 100 yards away.

I don’t know whether to break out the Toro today or wait until tomorrow morning. I do love me some snowblowing, but not when it’s still coming down, and windy.

I guess we have gotten close enough to 32 degrees – I see that the car is dripping. Trash cans are ready to be set out for tomorrow’s pickup – one day later – and they are covered with icicles all around. All of the roads north of here and into the Columbia Gorge (I-84) are really treacherous.

Even thought that biting arctic cold can actually kill you dead, I really observed when our years in Minnesota ended and we removed to OR that there is this advantage in the serious cold: When Fall is over and it drops down to dead-cold, then the horrible roads, ice, and frozen mud is GONE. The humidity was always very low in MN during the winter so – yes – there was plowing of roads to be done when they were drifted shut with 2-3 feet (or more) but there was not the endless thawing and re-freezing with horrible road surfaces.

The fact is that in the really cold country (including further east than MN) people do go ahead and live out in it – – having acquired the clothing and equipment to do so safely. Even though 25-30 below isn’t happy this week in ND/MN, it’s happy next week for the ice fishermen! Those who hadn’t taken their fish houses out on the ice yet are now free to do so, since 25-30″ of ice will indeed support their 4-WD pickups, and they can set up housekeeping on the ice for the next two months, with couches and wood stoves – all snug and good.

When Donald and Hillary were running for president in Wisconsin, they had an ice fishing contest, three rounds, different lakes. After the first, Trump got 20 fish, and Clinton got none. After the second, Trump got 40 fish, and Clinton got none.

          She sent out a spy.

When Trump came back with 50 fish, Hillary Clinton exclaimed, “I have video evidence that he cheated! He CUT A HOLE IN THE ICE!!!”

      • SMOD! It’s an ironic, sardonic, sarcastic rendition of the old “stop the ride, I wanna get off” meme. Sort of a riff on every person’s innate sense that we don’t deserve, as a planet, to survive.

The video starts with the author’s reason (and we all have one, at least): the industrialization and commercialization of Christmas. “Brang that meteor of death!!” is his response.

        I wish I had a SMOD tee-shirt, sometimes. That and a MPAI* tee-shirt.

        (* Most People are Idiots.)

Yet we love them all. We don’t bring the sweet meteor of death. We just love them actively, and “bless their hearts”. But everyone has that moment, every now and then, when dealing with most people, where we say, “Come on, sweet meteor. We’re RIGHT HERE.”

    Merry Christmas Stella, Stellars!
Wonderful night of celebration last night. This creature did not stir till 9 this morning! Breakfast was great, practically perfect poached eggs, bacon that just melted in your mouth (what’s new), and a tasty batch of fried potatoes.
Cried twice during the giving of gifts. First was a calendar made by my daughters with pictures of the past year, mainly of the wedding. Brought on an overwhelming sense of joy, and what a truly amazing year it has been. Love my girls!
Second, gift from SIL, a round of golf at Pebble Beach! January 22nd at 11 am. Oh my. A bucket list item of mine for a long time now. Still stunned. He beat me by a stroke the other day, but thinking I’ll bring him down, heck, maybe even Pebble itself next time! 😀

Not the word I’d use to describe you all, but hey, I back my President 110%!
Here’s wishing you all joy and peace on this glorious day, here in this glorious country that is once again returning to the One who is responsible for it all.

  21. I can understand that since Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer was written by Jews, they didn’t understand the actual story of Christ. It needs to be re-written.

    Hear me out. 😀

It’s foggy and cold. Santa and his 12 reindeer are starving, and they can’t see. Rudolph and Santa agree to cut his shiny nose off, and attach it to the sleigh. And they all ate venison that night. “This is my body…”, right? Poor Rudolph. Three days later he reappears, nose and all, and everybody celebrates.

it was written by Robert Lewis May, who happened to be Jewish….May graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Dartmouth College in 1926 as well though. I suspect he understood a great deal about the deal….he wrote pseudo ad copy for Montgomery Ward as some stories about a reindeer….

    • Heck, you could make a Foxe’s Book of Martyrs/Acts of the Apostles sequel, where all the other 12 reindeer get killed, too. If a trilogy, Santa gets revenge in the last movie.

Parent prompting (or nagging) is how they learn. My daughter asked yesterday how long she will have to remind her son he needs to change into clean underwear. One thing I noticed – my older grandson (17) has become much more helpful and offers. He did part of the dinner, and his brother helped with shoveling, walking dogs etc. They both helped with dishes.
