Commentary from Bishop Barron on today’s gospel reading, the Annunciation. I loved the last sentence especially. Merry Christmas to all of you, wherever your home or travels have taken you.

    4TH SUNDAY OF ADVENT

    LUKE 1:26-38

Friends, our Gospel today introduces the most elevated creature: Mary, the Mother of God. The Church Fathers often made a connection between Eve, the mother of all the living, and Mary, the Mother of God and Mother of the Church. In fact, they saw her as “the new Eve,” the one who undid the damage done by Eve.

The angel’s greeting to Mary is important here: “Hail Mary, full of grace.” Mary is greeted as someone who is able to accept gifts. Eve and Adam grasped; Mary is ready to receive. And Mary’s reply is also significant: “How is this possible, for I do not know man?” There is nothing cowed about Mary.

The angel explains to Mary: “The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will overshadow you…” At the heart of the spiritual life is the conviction that your life is not about you. The real spiritual life is about allowing oneself to be overwhelmed by the one who loves us. Mary is someone who is ready for the impossible, and this makes her the paradigm of discipleship. “Let it be done to me according to thy word.” That’s an acquiescence to adventure.

Had never thought of “grace” as one who is able to receive gifts, but now see how it applies.
And “acquiesce”. Had to look up since only reference was in Pirates of the Caribbean movie. Interesting choice of wording, but again, fitting.
      Have a great day Menagiere!

Stella – Great minds think alike! That was one one of the pics I had for tomorrow! It looks much better up there than the smaller version would have down here 😉 I have the smaller, earlier close up of just Joseph, Mary and baby Jesus for today, but 1st is “No Room at the Inn” by Margaret Tarrant. I chose this because of how tired Mary looked after such a difficult journey the days before giving birth. Even the little donkey looks tired, although Mary must have been light to carry.
The second is the still image from the Nativity Story movie of just Mary, Joseph, and the baby Jesus. The third is “A Son is Given” by Howard Lyon.

I have Christmas cards that say: “God’s Gift is still the greatest ever given, and the greatest our hearts will receive.” It is one of my favorites. Thank You God for sending Your Son. Thank You Jesus for being God, but allowing yourself to be born into this world for love of us. Thank You Holy Spirit for descending and guiding us. Have a wondrous, joyful, and safe Christmas eve and holiday for everyone here at this happy place Stella has created for us. May God Bless you and keep you in His care, this season and all year. May God bless you Stella for this creation of your website where we can praise and express our love of God to the world.

Merry Christmas Eve to all – I just spent a few minutes talking to my heavenly Father about the wonders of the details and the purpose of the Incarnation.

I doubt very much that I added anything new to the subject. At all.

He fully understood, since He does indeed “remember that we are dust.”

I love Him. He loves me. And became flesh for me so that I could be made new in Him.

    What’s not to love?

That’s light-hearted and certainly not Christmas genre, but expresses my heart.

All Christmas music in the air at my house, but just wanted to share that here.

    Love you all –

    Morning Stella, and all,
Beautiful pictures on this beautiful day, love both the Advent and choir. And the song of the day, love it as well.
Christmas Eve is my day with my children, so is very dear to me for more reasons than the obvious. Tonight we will gather and have our special feast, as requested by them: Breakfast for Dinner! A newer tradition but one I “acquiesced” to, rather easily I might add.
Do love me some breakfast, and I’m fairly good at it.

Was thinking of changing since same as Stella’s. But as with breakfast, one cannot get to much
    “O Holy Night”.
Have a wonder filled day out here. May grace, and peace be with you.

For many, many years our main Christmas tradition was going to Midnight Mass, coming home to open presents, and then a huge breakfast of biscuits and gravy, ham and eggs. Even after my boys left home, we first continued that tradition, up through the first year my first year my first grandchild was born.

The second year after her birth we women of the family rebelled. The guys are still mad about it, but I tried to explain to them that they need to do that tradition at home, with their own family, if that’s what they want to do. Truth is, the kids are too little right now to stay out half the night and be able to have a fun Christmas.

Anyhow, derk, lots of good memories associated with a Christmas breakfast for us too.

My family has had to cancel tonight’s plans to be here – – sleeting in many areas of Portland with temps in the hills (where they live) in the low 30s, icy streets and probably getting more so through the afternoon. That’s what fall was also like in Minnesota: two months of freezing or warm, or ice or mud – – irritating, at the least. Anyway, driving is really slippery and no telling what it will be like tonight. I’m good with them postponing. No need to have a baby out in that. Even if “you” do ok, no telling what the driver two lanes over is doing, especially if he’s from Washington State and late getting to Sacramental. Just not worth it.

I did contact Grandson/new Daddy and assure him that this was the right decision. Don’t need a three month old first baby on the freeway with nervous parents driving on ice and then maybe getting a fender bender.

So Tuesday it is. I told them I would sustain the continued supervision of their gifts…….for now……..

So I will have a quiet day and there is benefit for that in me. Oh, I did warn them that I was VERY likely to slice into the amazing smoked turkey that dear friends sent to me from some amazing smoked turkey place in Texas. I see a beautiful Christmas sandwich there (which I had bought beautiful breads for) – with a side of cranberry sauce. And I will set off the big fire in the fire place – I’m not holding that them! It’s all mine now.

Growing up years (and in MN for 18 years) we lived these kinds of weather-driven changes in the winter – do what you need to do and be ok with it. A little letdown – but I always feel that way with sudden changes in plans no matter what the reason.

Love the Santa Claus boot camp above – already sent it to my Marine son.

It was SO good, Lburg. I will have to limit myself tomorrow (there is potential for quite a few smoked turkey sandwiches between now and Tuesday evening, y’know)……in the Christmas spirit, I will limit myself. I actually put the whole bird back in the freezer until tomorrow, for its benefit as well as a bit of self-control for myself!!!! Must have adequate smoked turkey for family on Tuesday…..must have adequate smoked turkey for family on Tuesday…..must have adequate sm………………………………………………………….everything’s getting fuzzzy…………………..z.zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Just checking in. Luckily my family came last night instead of today, so they missed the bad weather. Sorry that your Christmas is delayed, but I know it will be wonderful when the get together actually occurs! We are about to sit down to dinner here. Everybody contributed to the cooking, including the boys, so we are all ready. The boys made the trifle this year under my direction and had a great time making, eating, and getting sticky along the way. The animals are creating a bit of mayhem, but Tucker is sleeping now after his supper and a walk with the boys in the snow.

Merry Christmas Sharon, with big hugs to you.

And big hugs right back! I’m relieved they did not come – as the afternoon unfolded, it’s obvious the roads are truly a mess. Those inbetween temps (that occur in the fall in cold cloimes) where the ice and rain and snow and sleet and ice just made things treacherous.

Merry Christmas, Stella —–ooooh, and the inaugural sandwich was SCRUMPTIOUS – my mouth was most pleased and now anticipating………the next.

Stella, have you seen what the temps in the “upper midwest” (think MN/ND/WI) are going to be this week? Highs of 7 above, and stuff like that – and 25 below at night – air temp, not “air chill”…..yikes. Oh, goodness, I remember such weeks, especially in 1996…..I am grateful to not be there. So grateful.

Our Heavenly Father, Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.

Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.

Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump and Mike Pence and their families as they seek to lead America back to You.

Grant us patience, Lord, as the evil ones try to anger us and cause us to fall.
Spread blessings over Israel and Netanyahu.

We humbly ask that You please comfort those who are grieving and in pain.
Thank you Father, for Your Love and the gift of Life.

In Jesus name, we pray. Amen.
