    Today is the feast day of Santa Lucia (St. Lucy) of Syracuse (Sicily), of vast importance to the Nordic (especially Swedish) Christian community:

    The traditional song sung on St. Lucy’s Day is set to a folk tune from Naples. So there you have it: A Sicilian saint celebrate in Sweden and honored in a song set to Neapolitan music. A classic rendition of this song is:

    I have attended a Santa Lucia service. The church is darkened and then the procession of Lucia and her attendants begins. The church gradually fills with light and music. So sweet and other worldly.

    St. Lucy is patron saint of those with eye problems. It takes on more importance for me on this celebration of her feast day because since late last evening (right after midnight and into December 13th) I noticed a shadow in m right eye; I believe I have a cataract and am very anxious about it; calling an ophthalmologist immediately. Please say a prayer to St. Lucy for me. Thank you.

      You’ve got it, Mike. Prayers to all the saints and angels for you.

      I had cataracts growing in both eyes and was blessed to be able to get lens implants. If you opthamologist suggests it, go for it with no hesitation! Outpatient surgery and I could see fine right after the lenses settled in place, about 24 hours. They did each eye on a separate day. No glasses anymore and I have 20/20 vision. Hopefully you are cataract-free, but if it turns out you do have them and surgery is an option, no worries needed.

      My friend had the same experience as Patternpuzzler. She is thrilled to be without glasses and sees very well.

      Are you also having flashers? There is another condition related to age called posterior vitreous detachment. I had it in both eyes, and it can be very alarming. Fortunately, 90% of the time it is nothing to worry about, although you should see your doctor immediately to be sure. I also have cataracts developing, but haven’t had surgery yet.

        No flashes, thankfully. My older brother had a freak detached retina and he is so very lucky that he lives near an excellent eye center — he lost no vision and the retina healed perfectly.

        I just have a light grey oval that I can see when I cover my left eye, and I have noticed that if I look at a white object like a wall or ceiling with my left eye, it’s very white, and if I look with just my right eye, it’s beige/yellowish — a definite clouding the lens.

        I had lasik surgery 14 years ago and understood the technology, etc., but when you get down to having someone with sharp objects actually touching and cutting your eye, it’s a bit a freak-out!

        I called today and have an appointment Monday morning with an eye surgeon / eye specialist.

      I’m praying for you, Mike. I had cataract surgery earlier this year, and it was like a miracle! I can see without glasses or contacts for the first time in my life! Better than 20/20 in one eye, and almost 20/20/ in the other! I was wearing a glasses prescription of -10.75! And I see colours better as well! I certainly pray that you have the same results as me, and though the surgery was scary, it was a “Nada-burger”, lol! Just a lot of fiddly eye drops and itchy, but no pain at all. You will do great!

      Prayers for you Mike, I know minor surgery never seems minor when it is happening to you. God’s angels guide the hands of all involved 🙏🏼. My dad has had both eyes done and it was a breeze for him and he is a guy if worry and angst can be found he will find it.

    I’m reading this right now. Very important book.

    The Last Closet by Moira Grayland.

    Published by Vox Day’s Castalia House, a very new publishing company.

    I’ve known about her story for quite a while, but only from her web essay, “The Story of Moira Grayland”, published a few years ago online. I’m glad she wrote this book.

    Vox himself writes the forward to the book. He understands the sickness and the source of the sickness that every institution which SJWs take suffers. SF/F is just as converged as Hollywood, TV, Academia, YMCA, Boy Scouts, Most Churches, and Most Government Halls.

    Castalia House is not converged, and won’t be. That’s what you have to decide, when you create an institution or a company or a collective: Will we allow our organization to be taken over by SJWs? If you say Yes, or even Possibly, it will be, inevitably. They will gut your institution, and then wear it as a skin-suit and demand respect. If you say No, and mean it, it will never be taken.

              My point is that I dislike (even hate) acronyms that aren’t immediately identifiable. How would any of us know immediately that MZB means “Marion Zimmer Bradley” – and I know who she is.

                Conversation killers, as far as I’m concerned.

                There’s a church on one of the main drives in my town that uses twitter abbreviations in their big sign out front – such as “ur” for your . I’m this close to contacting but would probably be talking to a 40 year old Valley Girl trying to be contemporary. I’m up to here with churches that live to attract the younger generation. But that’s a whole other thing.

                You will notice I even typed out “as far as I’m concerned”. I see no reason to assume that every literate reader should know what afaic means.

                You were good to press for clarification. I normally wouldn’t bother. I just figure the person did not intend to communicate with all readers.

                    I’ve been trying for about a month to recall (without a search) what the letters CNN actually stand for. All I can come up with is Clinton News Network, and I know that’s not it. Of course, there are days where I can’t remember what my apple corer looks like and just hunt in the drawer, hoping it will raise its hand.

                    Which raises the question: does an apple corer have hands? I’ll check next time I use it.

                    Just finished doing a julienne cut on a few apples, filled my dehydrator and will have jars of tiny dried apple pieces, all ready to be added to oatmeal and chicken salad and such. I’m really enjoying my dehydrator but am a little slow on the creative side – thinking of the varieties of applications that would fit my cooking. I am glad I got it – sure makes me look forward to next year’s garden.

    Okay, I just NEED to vent . We are angry! We have had ENOUGH! We will never help anyone again. EVER!! Either we’re too kindhearted, too stupid, or too gullible!! Out of the kindness of our hearts and because it was so cold out yesterday, we took a man into our home. Felt so sorry for him. Poor thing was frozen stiff, we had to carry him out of the cold. This morning he just vanished. Not a word, not even “goodbye” or “thank you” for sheltering him!! The last straw? I realized he had peed all over the living room floor!
    Like SERIOUSLY 😡😡😡 That’s the “thank you” we get for being good to people?
    Now we’re going to warn our lovely friends/family to watch out for this man! He is heavy set, and he’s wearing nothing but a scarf. He has a nose that looks like a carrot, 2 black eyes and his arms are so skinny they look like sticks!! Don’t bring him into your house! What a huge mess he made on our floor but he did leave me his scarf! He goes by the name of Frosty. (had to share).

    OMG….the pic of Santa….my first “college car” was the same 1953 MGTD convertible….white not red, but was the pride of my youth….but….I graduated on June 1, got married June 2, and that Monday went to bank to borrow money for a new VW Beattle for a “family car” and had to sell my precious MG…..(my father had aways called it a “roller Skate” and said I needed two of them).

      My best friend’s husband had one in college in the 60’s, gave it up for a family car. Another friend had a MGTF1600, never sold it. Great to ride in, expensive for upkeep unless you have a live-in mechanic. Something always going wrong with British cars.
