Early Colonial American History of the Wild Turkey

We used to have more turkeys around here but something’s gone and made the wild turkey a rare breed (had to do it).
I’ll post it again, my fav turkey anecdote:
A few years back Czarina and I were sitting down late in the afternoon and we heard a ‘thump’ on the steel roof followed by a long skittering sound followed by another thump. This repeated five or six times so we went out front to see what it was. Turns out three wild turkey hens had decided to roost on our roof’s ridgeline. They’d fly up to the ridge one by one (first thump) but it’s too hard to get a stable perch so they’d fall off and slide down the slope, skittering as their claws couldn’t get purchase on the slickery sheet metal. As they fell off the edge they’d hit the hood of the truck (second thump) that was parked on the drive right up against the garage. They’d fly back up, one by one, and try it over again, thump/skitter/thump, one at a time until they finally gave up after about ten minutes.
We don’t see them walking around the yard eating bugs and cruciforms any more, they just ain’t around. Seems the other turkey-eating critters have taken their share. Maybe if they spent less time trying to perch on the unperchable and more time making turkeys…..

In NH, we would make all the males (maybe the females, I don’t remember) do that “BlubbalaBlubbalaBlubbala” sound just by screaming “Eh Eh Eh!!!”
It got to where they would respond when we tapped the fence nails with the fence tool.
Turkeys are fun to mess with.

Neighbor diagonally across the lake, one I mentioned over a year ago had leveled a few acres of trees, has replaced those trees with at least a hundred coops of (allegedly) fighting roosters. Now I know that no one would dare illegally fight chickens so these must be exotic birds for discerning collectors.
Though they’re about 2000 feet away when they all light up at dawn, especially with the thick and quiet morning air, you’re in for a show. Extra loud this AM, probably letting the world know how happy they are not to be turkeys.

This Day in History: John F. Kennedy’s assassination and the toll on Jackie
http://www.taraross.com/2016/11/this-day-in-history-john-f-kennedys-assassination-and-the-toll-on-jackie/
On this day in 1963, President John F. Kennedy is shot and killed in Dallas, Texas.
You’ve heard the story many times, and you know the many controversies surrounding the story of JFK’s assassination. But do you know what happened to Jackie Kennedy in the days and weeks after his death?
The First Lady was there when the President was killed, of course. She famously stood next to Lyndon B. Johnson when he took the presidential oath of office on Air Force One. She was still wearing the blood-stained pink suit that she’d been wearing all day.
“I want them to see what they have done to Jack,” she told Lady Bird Johnson.
When Jackie returned home, she was immediately confronted with many decisions, both big and small. For one thing, JFK’s funeral had to be planned. Jackie decided that he should be buried in Arlington National Cemetery, not in Massachusetts. “He belongs to the people,” she said. She arranged for an eternal flame to be lit near JFK’s grave.
Jackie was still grieving an infant son who had died that summer. She arranged for Patrick Kennedy’s body to be moved to Arlington, next to his father. She also moved their little daughter, Arabella, who had been stillborn in 1956.
How heart-wrenching to watch those two little caskets join the larger one for their father?
But her living children needed attention, too. Little John’s 3rd birthday was on the same day as his father’s funeral. Caroline’s 6th birthday occurred only two days later. They had been attending school in the White House, but now they would no longer be allowed to live there. What were they to do?
Lady Bird offered to keep the school open, at least for a little while.
Jackie also had to choose a new home, of course. She settled on a place in Georgetown, but it must have been hard to find solace there. Throngs of reporters and well-wishers were always gathering outside her front door, and the drapes had to be kept closed so no one could see the grieving family inside.
In the meantime, Jackie felt responsible for preserving JFK’s legacy and influencing what historians would say about him. One week after his death, she called a reporter from Life magazine. She wanted him to write an article. When the reporter arrived, she spoke for hours. “She wanted to make certain that Jack was not forgotten in history,” the reporter later said.
Jackie told the reporter a story of an old song that she said JFK loved. The song concluded with the line: “Don’t let it be forgot, that once there was a spot, for one brief, shining moment that was known as Camelot.”
The Life article appeared a week later. As you know, the Camelot analogy stuck.
But there was still more. Decisions kept confronting Jackie. Who should write the authoritative account of the JFK’s assassination? What should she say to the Warren Commission? Maybe worse, she had to listen to constant speculation about who had killed her husband.
“[W]hat did it matter what they found out?” she said. “They could never bring back the person who was gone.”
Throughout all this time, as one historian speculates, she may have been suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. She would stay up late, crying and drinking. She relived the critical moments over and over in her head. Could she have pushed the President out of the way? She considered suicide, but knew that her children needed her. She smoked compulsively.
For a while, the brave face that she presented to the public was exactly that—a brave face. It would be many years before she ever really set her life to rights again.
Although maybe she never really felt that she did? As she told the Life magazine reporter in 1963: “There’ll never be another Camelot.”

The image that I always see when the Kennedy assignation is spoken of is Jackie crawling out on the trunk of the car to retrieve a piece of her husband’s brain and SS Clint Hill jumping on the car to get her back inside and protect her.
Clint in an interview repeated what Jackie said while in the car. I won’t post it because it is too graphic and sad for morning but she did keep saying “Oh Jack I love you.”
Clint immediately knew Jack was dead and so did Jackie.

There’s a ‘not too bad’ movie ‘Jackie’ that covers this period: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1619029/
I’m not a Kennedy fan, had he not been a young, dashing manufactured figure his and his family’s sordid pasts would have had a Nixonesque oversight. Did visit his grave though, had one of the maintenance people tell us that the eternal flame wasn’t completely eternal, seems a troop of visiting Massachusetts Girl Scouts managed to douse it when they over-applied a jar of holy water they brought.

New poll shows Roy Moore and Doug Jones in statistical tie
http://www.wbrc.com/story/36899832/exclusive-new-poll-shows-roy-moore-and-doug-jones-in-statistical-tie
A new Raycom News Network Senate Election poll conducted by Strategy Research finds the race in a statistical tie nearly two weeks after allegations of sexual misconduct against Republican Roy Moore rocked the campaign.
The exclusive poll of 3,000 likely Alabama voters finds if the election were held today, Moore would receive 47% of the vote to Democrat Doug Jones with 45%. Five percent of the respondents remain undecided with 3% indicating plans to Write-In a candidate.
The margin of error of the survey is plus or minus two percent, meaning Moore and Jones are statistically tied three weeks before the special election.
The new poll suggests allegations against Moore have chipped away at his lead, which was 11% in a November 8th Raycom News Network poll conducted by Strategy Research.
When asked “what do you think about the allegations made against Roy Moore,” 45% believe all or some of the allegations; 34% do not believe the allegations; and 21% believe some or all of the allegations, but say it has not changed their vote.

That looks mighty tasty, Czar.
One of our go-to recipes for any kind of leftover meat:
For each person:
Cut their portion of meat into byte size pieces and put it in a soup bowl.
Put 1 1/2 cups water into a pot and bring to a boil with:
3/8 tspn salt
3/8 tspn powdered anchovy (get dried anchovies at Asian market; blenderiize them)
3/4 tspn sugar
enough Kikkoman soy sauce to give it a nice color.
1/2 Tbspn dark sesame oil
1/2 tspn lemon juice or rice vinegar or balsamic vinegar or cider vinegar
herbs and spices appropriate for the meat. Pretty much always ginger and garlic. 🙂
Crushed red pepper or cayenne or tabasco or Sriracha or fresh chiles to your tolerance.
Bite size assortment of fresh vegetables. Carrots, onions, celery are popular, but whatever.
When the veggies are done, put them in the bowl with the meat.
Add pasta (macaroni, egg noodles, spaghetti, Asian noodles, whatever) to the water and cook until done, then put the pasta and liquid on top the meat and veg.
Sprinkle the top with minced green onions if you have it.

Oh that sounds GREAT. I think I’m going to try ‘5 spice powder’ with or instead of the ginger – Czarina’s one of those with the altered ginger sense.
Definitely the rice vinegar and maybe lemon zest to top…can’t wait for Friday.

OMG I can’t believe it. I have FOX NEWS on and Sandra Smith was interviewing liberal Stephen Sigmund and Charlie Kuirk about the football players not standing for the Nat. Anthem. Stephen Sigmund started in with one of his inane harangues and when she tried to get him back on track, he said to her, “Don’t interrupt me, I let you talk.” Her eyes got really wide and she completely turned her head and looked to someone off on the side. I think we will hear more about this. LOL That guy is a real jerk. He rarely lets anyone else speak without being interrupted. SMH

I’m not a fan of Levin’s, but IMO he’s right on the money re those who belatedly tell their stories of assault.
BTW, I didn’t know until recently that the legal definition of assault can be as little as intentionally touching someone’s arm without gaining the person’s permission even if there is no sexual innuendo. I always thought assault had to include violence.

I actually listened; quite a shocker, because I’m known to switch stations when a commercial for Levin comes on the air.
I don’t care about these women who are coming out years and years after the fact to complain about these things. I genuinely don’t. Why didn’t they say anything at the time? Levin – for a change – raises a valid point. Why aren’t these women screaming bloody murder when the event happens, not years later? Even if they didn’t want to say anything at the time, let’s run with that Congresswoman: okay. You don’t want to say anything at the dinner. Fine. But you could say something that later that evening after the dinner, right? Shortly after the event? Not dozens of years later.
And what, exactly, was the position of this Congresswoman when Bill Clinton was in the office? Inquiring minds demand to know.

One Nation. Multiple Realities.
By David Prentice – November 14, 2017
“There have been tumultuous times in our country, passionate debates, and even a civil war that have all defined who we are as a nation. Yet we have survived and thrived. Now, more than ever, we need to remember this fact…”

I made a small, too small as it turns out, sweet potato casserole for us along with the monster one to take to the dinner tomorrow. Now it’s looking like there might not be any tonight for my poor husband when he gets home. 😀 How did I go 11 months without eating this deliciousness?

All over the third world, health problems come home with our military men and women. They may show up immediately or later in life.
One of my cousins who fought in WWII served in Burma. He came home with some strange ailment with his legs having to do with a fungus in the bones, they thought. After a while with experimental treatment, the ailment seemed to get better. Amazingly it didn’t go all over his body when he first contracted the disease.
Then he was in a car accident in which his legs were badly injured but not irreparably so. However, the original ailment started again and they had to amputate both legs to keep the fungus from spreading.

When I was a child the Bookmobile was the absolute best part of my week. I was so excited every week. It was almost as good as Christmas. I checked out as many books as they would let me every week. The only bad thing was that I would have them all read in a few days.

Growing up in Chicago we had a library about a mile away we went at least once every two weeks. I can still remember when I was so young I was taking out picture books and the honor of getting my own library card 🙂 .

Ours was a bunch of old books in an old house. Might have been somebody’s personal collection that other people donated to, not a real part of the county system. Rode my bike there, about a mile, 2-3 x per week, from 1959-1965, checked out Burroughs, Poe, Hugo, all the English classics, mysteries from the 20’s-50’s, humor, science fiction. Often, my mother & I would read out loud to each other. Laughed like loons over The Egg & I, The Plague & I, My Brother Was an Only Child, Archie & Mehitabel. And anything about UFOs.

I lived in a tiny town in NC I would push my youngest daughter in a stroller and my two older daughters would walk to our tiny library. We loved it. I wonder if there are any pictures online. I’m going to look 🙂 .

I dreamed of a career as a scientist. Used to check out bug and botany books. And as a pre teen I found the Penny Parish books, and another set of books about a family in New York. It was set during WWII, and the dad was somehow involved in the war effort, maybe a spy, you never knew. The mom was dead, and the kids were Mona, Rush, and a younger girl and boy I can’t remember. Later they adopted another boy.
Anyhow, they lived in a huge house and had all kinds of adventures. I sure loved those stories.
I just remembered the name of one of the books, and looked them up. They were part of a series about the Melendy quartet. I’m going to order those books and see if my grandkids like them too. Yes, they are old, but then they when I read them, and I was fascinated by their world with no television. As a teen, Mona became an actress on a radio program in New York. I loved imagining that different world.

I shall have czar order them, for me. I don’t care when a book is set, I read to go there.
I’ve been to the highlands, the desert, the sea.
I’ve learned the way of the whale & the bee.
I’ve hidden with pirates, I rode with Huck Finn,
I’ve been to the Admiral Benbow Inn.
As long as I’ve eyes & am able to look
I’ll go where I will with my mind & a book

They are all youth books. Not for very young kids, but still kids books. And they were wonderful.

My mother used to take us to the library downtown. It was in this wonderful old brick gothic style building with arch windows with leaded panes. Later the library had to be expanded they said, and built new modern concrete building that is ugly and soul less. It has more meeting rooms and open space but it doesn’t hold more books, it seems to me.
And yes, I was so very proud of that library card. I had a little wallet with nothing but my library card.
The library brought the beauty and hope of the world to an unhappy little girl who found a future to look forward to in those books and stories. Not only did it help educate and prepare me, it helped me have hopes and dreams that I could not have found otherwise.

Absolutely. Agree!! In every way, with every word. I also volunteered in libraries from 4th grade on, loved librarians, the smell of new & old books, the weight of them & the feel of the paper. For Christmas I always received books. And chocolate covered cherries!

lilbirdee12’s prayer:
Our Heavenly Father, Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.
Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.
Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump and Mike Pence and their families as they seek to lead America back to You.
Grant us patience, Lord, as the evil ones try to anger us and cause us to fall.
Spread blessings over Israel and Netanyahu.
We humbly ask that You please comfort those who are grieving and in pain.
Thank you Father, for Your Love and the gift of Life.
And, Lord, we pray for all the people who have been affected by the earthquakes and hurricanes.
In Jesus name, we pray. Amen.

Drudge just showed me my new favorite rock and roll band.
These are kids, to me. Listen to this dude’s voice. He went back in time and brought back Zeppelin, Rush, and several other bands from the early 70s.
It’s astonishing how good these guys are. When you look at them playing live, you think “These are kids!”, and then you remember that so were Zeppelin and Rush, in ’74. These guys just brought back rock and roll, bigly.
And Drudge just made them bigger.
I hope they’re alt-right, and don’t accept the inevitable offers of illicit hookers and blow. “No, we just want to make music. Go away.” The potential in this band is limitless.
Here’s their 2017 EP
