Mornin All 🙂 Stella’s Thanksgiving photo inspired me to post this amazing painting:
Still Life, 1638 by Willem Claeszoon Heda (1593/1594 – 1680/1682)

Heda was a Dutch Golden Age artist from the city of Haarlem devoted exclusively to the painting of still lifes. Heda’s skill was recognized early on in his career. Heda won local fame in his own day. Following his formative pieces of the 1620s, Heda reached his artistic maturity in the 1630s. These pieces contain perfectly draped fabric and assortments of fine glass and metal wares in addition to orderly-presented foodstuffs. His coloration and illustration of light in the pieces, combined with fine additive brush strokes, results in an almost unbelievable level of realism. Heda’s style continued to progress with his pieces of the 1640s developing a great simplicity founded upon a “firm construction built up on broad lines.” In this time, he also began to incorporate the crinkled napkin and knocked-over vases to his set of objects. Heda began to add more objects to his works, experimenting with modified compositional styles. The 1650s saw the introduction of a wider color-scheme. This change brought more fruit and curled leaves to his works, which combined with the crinkled napkins of the previous decade, resulted in a less firm character (in contrast to the glass and metal textures that he was previously known for). Heda’s final years saw the artist begin the transition from the late breakfast still-life paintings he helped create, to display still-life pieces. His last known works were painted in 1664 (Private collection, The Hague) and 1665 (Museum del Monte, Brussels), and contained the warmer pallette of browns. Though he lived until the 1680s, Heda’s last known paintings were created in the 1660s. Heda died in Haarlem in 1680 or 1682.
Heda was rediscovered by the French art critic Théophile Thoré in the 1860s. After seeing an example of his work at the Boijmans Museum in Rotterdam, Thoré praised Heda’s ability to make ‘pétite nature into a splendid celebration of life. Heda’s renewed popularity in the latter half of the 19th century resulted in the dissemination of his pieces throughout the world. His works can now be found on display in some of the world’s most famous museums. As one of the most recognized Dutch masters and one of the signature artists of the still life genre, his paintings feature in general surveys of art history as some of the highlights of Dutch seventeenth-century painting.

Any highly trained and very expensive pilot with a very expensive plane who would that is just childish.

Did he/she/it really think it wouldn’t be noticed? And that it would be ok?

      Your tax dollars at work.

I’m all about the military, including the Navy, but not so much about this kind of stupid.
I will tell you the personal experience of a fighter jet flying out of Edwards AFB in CA, the pilot of which chose to buzz the 2 lane highway on which we were driving, on our way back from a backpacking expedition in the Sierras.

We were on Highway 395 southbound from Lone Pine, headed for the Antelope Valley. At one point there was some divided highway that dropped down a bit, with high bluffs on either side of the roadway – the gap between the bluffs on both sides was probably about 200 yards. I was driving my nifty little Datsun B210. Sons were about 12 and 14 at the time and were my scouts. We were quite alone on the highway.

We are southbound, the northbound lane(s) to our left. A fighter jet moving 2-300 MPH (obviously with no advance warning) flew past us, southbound over the northbound lanes, about 25 feet or less off the pavement. We could see most of the bluffs ‘over there’ OVER THE TOP OF THE PLANE, which was, laterally, about 60 feet east of us.

      Unbelievable.

I stopped at the next pay phone and called Edwards AFB and reported the guy.

I will stand in the middle of the desert and bawl my eyes out as I watch the shuttlecraft descending at the steep angle “right over us”. I will sit and wait in my car, for a long time, to experience the SR-71 lifting off the runway and passing directly overhead, as I sit on a local road off the end of the runway. I will put on layers (now) and stand out in my increasingly chilled back yard to watch the SST pass overhead after sunset.

I love all these things but I’m just not big on really stupid.

That was a stupid stunt on the part of that pilot, risking his equipment, his plane, and anybody on the ground that, for some reason, just wasn’t able to get out of the way.

Assuming it was a man – they need to get over themselves. I’ve seen male genitalia. I have never understood exactly how any man arrives at the purposeful conclusion that there is a willing, random audience for that display. My message to any of those is the same as what I verbally provided to the department managers at Lockheed (early 80s) who were hitting on me – “Grow up. You don’t have any idea how silly you look acting that way.”

Got an email from my organic grocery delivery service this morning, saying that they are out of business effective immediately! Means that my order for next week isn’t valid (including my organic turkey).

I quickly reserved an Amish turkey from my local grocer/meat market, and I’m trying to remember exactly what was in the order for next Monday so that I can obtain everything elsewhere. I think it’s under control, but I wonder what happened that made them shut down so abruptly.

Last evening I watched an episode of the British “Antiques Roadshow” which featured Lowther Castle, a property first acquired in the Middle Ages. At one time the estate was 100,000 acres and was considered one of the finest properties in the world, let alone Britain, containing magnificent gardens, statuary, buildings and furnishings. The castle is a roofless ruin now but was rendered that way by the previous owner–the 6th or 7th ? Earl of Lonsdale–because he could not afford the taxes for the estate. Apparently if you render an ancient dwelling uninhabitable, such as removing the entire roof, taxes aren’t due.

As you likely know, huge estates like Lowther Castle own everything for miles around including the towns, the buildings, the mines, the minerals, the animals. Everything is beholden to the estate. If you are a responsible land owner, of course, you do all you are capable of to run it like a profitable business. The 5th Earl of Lonsdale, however, cared nothing for his family and astonishingly spent every penny frivolously plus went into heavy debt, departing the property in 1935. In 1939-40 the British Army took the property for war use. When they returned it to the family in 1954, it was in tremendous disrepair.

#5 had no children to inherit the holdings and so when he died the property went to his brother. I think the towns, buildings, etc. must have already been sold, but there simply was no money to keep up the main house. The family tried giving the property to the National Trust but that entity didn’t want it. Thus the roof removal and abandonment after the entire contents were sold to pay debts and to provide some income for the family to survive. See https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/ for articles on all their properties.

Several years back, the National Trust had a change of heart and decided to administer the property and do repairs to the walls of the great house, but not to replace the roof except in a small area to use as a visitors’ center. They rent the property out to help with expenses. The “Antiques Roadshow” chose the property for a couple of episodes.

A few items brought to AR for evaluation were purchased from the estate sale. Presenter (or as we used to say before PC took over–the hostess) Fiona Bruce began interviewing a rather nondescript man who turned out to be the 8th Earl of Lonsdale. She asked how it made him feel to return to a vast property that his family once owned. He basically said that though it’s a tragedy, it is what it is. She also told him that she’d read an interview wherein he’d revealed he was now a long-distance lorry driver (a trucker) and asked him why he chose that profession. He simply said, “One has to get by.” As usual in such stories, there are a hundred lessons to be learned from the fate of this family.

This is a short non-narrated vid of Lowther Castle, County of Cumbria, England . It “…features views of the main ruined building from a number of angles, including within the stabilised section of the ruins, and the room with completed roof. It also features extensive views of the surrounding countryside and gardens including the wildflower beds.”

There is a whole series on British castles available on YouTube. Very interesting. This is the first one. There are 14 in all.

One of the castles (Warwick, I think) is so large and expensive to maintain that it has the habit (the presenter said) of bringing its owners to their knees. The last to live there was also a Hollywood actor, stage name Michael Brook. He remarked that it was worth millions of dollars but took every cent he could earn to maintain it.
