Good Morning Nyet and Stellars! And thanks for breakfast, Nyet. Think maybe a just a little citrus this morning, before I begin the day.
“Did you ever sleep in a field of orange-trees in bloom? The air which one inhales deliciously is a quintessence of perfumes. This powerful and sweet smell, as savoury as a sweetmeat, seems to penetrate one, to impregnate, to intoxicate, to induce languor, to bring about a dreamy and somnolent torpor. It is like opium prepared by fairy hands and not by chemists.” ~ Guy de Maupassant, 88 Short Stories

No. But I have been asleep, only to be woken by someone who announces loudly that ‘it’s too hot and stuffy in here!’, opens all the windows, and then steals all the blankets.

Where my mom lived in Florida, they had large grapefruit (pink) and orange trees, and a small lemon tree with HUGE lemons! I loved picking the grapefruit, and sent a large box of them home to myself. I’ve never been around when the trees were flowering, though. I’ll bet they smell wonderful!

I think I need to go down south one of these days! You are all making me want to see the citrus trees. It sounds just wonderful!

They had so many grapefruit (huge, juicy and sweet) that they would load them up in the basket of their adult trike, and park it at the street with a “Free” sign on it. One year, the day before they were leaving for Michigan, I happened to be there and picked 12 dozen ripe grapefruit. They had a picker that looks like one of those long-handled tools to replace light bulbs. It had a basket on the end that would hold the grapefruit once it was picked, so that you could lower it to the ground. The tree was huge, and I couldn’t reach all the way to the top.

I had grapefruit for breakfast. The ones you order from Florida are better, especially later in the season (December/January). The minneolas are wonderful too. The Florida citrus isn’t as pretty as the stuff that comes from California, but I think it tastes better.

We have something here called “ugly oranges” they are only available during a certain time of the year but they are delicious, super sweet 🙂 .

I wonder if they are from Florida. Honestly, their navel oranges don’t have the pretty skin like the Cali oranges do, but they are super juicy and sweet, and the skins are thinner.
LikeLiked by 1 person
Could be, they have a thinner skin, lots of grooves in the skin and are relatively easy to peel.

I had a Boss-man once who grew an orange tree from a seed. He kept that thing in our lab for years! It never got bigger than 2 1/2 feet tall, but when it bloomed, the smell was intoxicating! It even had a few small fruit now and then, but they were too sour to eat. Small and perfect looking little oranges. I can imagine how sweet a full grove must be.

Very neat. Now that you mention that my mom had a small Lemon tree that was her dads, it probably got to be 5 feet tall, she kept it indoors during the winter and outdoors in the summer. The tree never grew fruit but if you rubbed the leaves with your fingers it smelled like lemon and the leaves were oily.
Sadly it finally died a few years back 😦 .

I grew a grapefruit tree from a seed. It was always scrawny (not enough light, I’m sure) and didn’t bloom. It did have spines. I was surprised to see the Florida grapefruit and orange trees with spines (they do).

Neat. I am learning I know nothing about citrus trees other than they give us delicious fruit that I buy at the store. There were some oranges in my strawberry salad today. Delicious.
Something about summer fruit in the dreary autumn days is so refreshing.

Our house was between grapefruit groves. And, there were orange trees in our yard. Funny that I can’t remember the smell of the flowers. I guess we were just so used to them.

When I was in college in Tampa, friends moved into a mobile home in an orange grove. Just stepped out the front door for fruit anytime. The reason good citrus trees cannot be grown from seeds is that the root stock is a hardy type tree which produces poor fruit, and a good flavored type is grafted onto the root stock so the tree will be hardy & produce good fruit. If the base (below the graft) sprouts, you just cut the limb off, because it will use up nutrients & not make fruit worth eating. Florida fruit in people’s yards is often not pretty/perfect but “dooryard” fruit & veggies are always tastier than commercial grown. Remember, growers discard imperfect food, even if it is perfectly tasty & nutritious. This is where “gleaners” & “second harvesters” often get their produce.

How to Marry a Millionaire made fun of never finding a democrat in Maine. White Christmas made fun of never finding a democrat in Vermont. Why aren’t conservatives, and Constitutionalists smart about taking over states the way the progs do?

I’d guess ‘do to a suicidal sense of complacency. Democrats and progs are like roaches, once they’re in your pantry you can’t kill ’em fast enough or in numbers sufficient enough to control ’em.

Mornin Czar – Yes. One friend of mine says it’s because we are all busy WORKING, while the progs have figured how to scam colleges, government and non-profits for no/low show, high paid jobs (paid for through our tax dollars). Also they are noisier, louder, but if ALL, or even MOST of us, spoke up, we would take control of the narrative, thereby decreasing the fear of those on our side too afraid to speak up. It may also be that we are inherently more independent, and getting us organized is like herding cats, but we should have enough sense to figure out how important organizing is!
This is from granitegrok website. I added Bible reading below:
http://granitegrok.com/

Notable Quote – Mark Steyn
“Americans and other Westerners who want their families to enjoy the blessings of life in a free society should understand that the life we’ve led since 1945 in the Western world is very rare in human history.
Our children are unlikely to enjoy anything so placid, and may well spend their adult years in an ugly and savage world unless we decide that who and what we are is worth defending.”
– Mark Steyn (author, speaker, columnist, and a NH treasure.)
my addition to this is:
As Jesus is carrying His cross… the Gospel according to Luke. 23:28-31
Jesus turning to them said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. For behold, the days are coming when they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never nursed!’ Then they will begin to say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us’; and to the hills, ‘Cover us’. For if they do this when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?”

Republicans at the top got fat and complacent gorging at the trough and let the wounded Democrats slink off into the underbrush to lick their wounds and recover.
The Rats spent decades sweeping the young, immigrants, drug dealers and amoral detritus of Hollyork into their ranks. They stroked and compromised them as the RINOs fed and fed and fed while ignoring replenishing their fading base.
I see the Republicans/Conservatives as an evaporating brand, the Rats have the upper hand and the swampy high ground. They’ve taken the competition out of life and promised the massses a lesser but guaranteed free lunch for a life, from each according to how much we can steal to each according to the price for his soul.
LikeLiked by 2 people
I agree with your comment. I would add that the republicans WANT to be the MINORITY party in Congress. That way they can take the bribes from lobbyists to pass pork, and blame everything on the majority party (reference the last how many years?) They don’t know how to do nothing and get the bribes with no flak from their base if they are in the MAJORITY, so they actually will sacrifice some seats (congresscritters who will not run for re-election) so that they can go back to being the minority in congress.
LikeLiked by 3 people
They’re hoping they can retain their seats and the Rats haven’t learned their lesson this time and won’t just destroy the party.
LikeLiked by 1 person
Do the rats NEED a (fake) “opposition” party – somewhere to direct anger of their base when the base’s lifestyle goes down the toilet. Rep rino’s point to dems, dems point to rinos. Have to keep up the illusion of 2 opposing parties to occupy the sheeples/useful idiots discontent.

Believe it or not, I had a drone flashing a light in my window one night (hopefully not a camera flash). It woke me up. As far as I’m concerned, you should be able to down any drone over your property that you did not invite onto your property (insurance co or roofer for examples). There used to be things called PRIVATE property and peeping Tom laws!

For The First Time In A Very Long Time, An American President Stared Down China & China Blinked
Donald Trump arrived at the APEC summit with a bit of swagger. Though already a naturally tall and broad-shouldered man, he stood bigger than life among his world leader contemporaries as a petulant Establishment Media did all it could to downplay the aura of strength that followed Mr. Trump everywhere he went. Gone was the rapid gun-chewing insecurity that marked Barack Obama’s participation in such gatherings. There was no apologizing for America’s past. No remarking how the United States owed others. No hiding from the fact that in an increasingly volatile and complicated world, America remains the one true superpower.
And despite the media’s fake obsession with Russia these days, it is China that poses the single greatest challenge to U.S. superiority throughout the world. It has been China that has expanded the scope of its economy and influence by leaps and bounds nearly unchecked by any rival, America or other, for some fifty years. Then came Donald Trump, a political outsider but a worldly man familiar with the workings of Chinese government and business. Mr. Trump strode up to China’s President Xi, firmly grasped his hand, looked him in the eyes, and delivered an unapologetic “America First” message that sent ripples of stunned admiration through the entire delegation.
It was glorious. The Establishment Media will never report that fact. It will never participate in the truth of how strong and proud is Mr. Trump’s representation of this nation as he stands literally and figuratively towering over other world leaders.
Many thought Xi would get the better of Trump at the APEC summit. That didn’t happen as reported here by the Washington Examiner: …

“And despite the media’s fake obsession with Russia these days, it is China that poses the single greatest challenge to U.S. superiority throughout the world. ” – Agreed. All nations and peoples have some similarities, but the Chinese vs. Russian individual and government (inward) mentality, and (outward) view toward other countries of the world is different.

Not been feeling well lately, so I’m sitting here like vegetable thinking of all the work I have to do, watching an episode of Gunsmoke, and noticing how even the older actors had beautiful blue eyes. I am a sucker for blue eyes. My Irish grandmother had true violet eyes that as she aged and developed cataracts turned blue. Yes – violet eyes exist. Two separate groups of geneticists have found out that you need to have an albino in your dna past, which is not surprising considering her translucent strawberry milk skin. Just random thoughts.

Big fan of Mark Steyn here. On that page is also a story about
“An End to Isms: Adam J MacLeod teaches law at Faulkner University in Alabama and he has noticed that his students know very little, are incapable of critical thinking, appear to think their “feelings” are of interest to others, and regard labels such as “racist” and “classist” as dispositive. So he put them on notice that he would be undoing their dis-education:…”

Not being sure why the White House posted a photo from November 10th as their “Photo of the Day” I’m thinking it’s perhaps in support of our First Lady after all the H8R attacks during the recent Presidential trip….

Oh my gosh! The kiddies all have toy American Eagles! Ha – that’s so cute. I bet they’re made in China though.

http://canadafreepress.com has some interesting posts about internet freedom today. They also have one on google/youtube supposedly safe videos for little kiddies that are actually violent and awful. One terrible fact reported is “87 percent of children, 12 years of age and younger are tuned in to Google’s ‘Child-Friendly YouTube Kids App.” That fact itself is downright scary!!!!! I don’t understand having a child, and giving them an internet connection at such a young age – why not just hand them the keys to the car at 3 years old – seriously!

OK, so here is a question for everybody:
Is there something like a leaf vacuum for your lawn that anyone knows actually works? I’ve seen one that attaches to a riding lawn mower, but we don’t have one. (Would love to convince DH to spend the money on a riding mower 🙂 hehehe – I’d be dangerous on one!) Something either hand held or easily pushed that does not cost a lot? 90% of the oak leaves are gone now that we’ve cut down the trees, but there are still enough from the neighbor’s trees to ruin the lawn if we leave them there. Leaf blowing is not an option due to allergies, and those kids that rake your lawn are as mythical as unicorns around here.
Thanks 🙂

I think many hand-held leaf blowers can also suck up leaves into a bag.

Oh wow! That’s great Stella. Thanks! I did not know these existed, and it mulches too! It would not have worked with the huge amount of leaves we had before (about 90 large paper recycle bags that took 3 full days to rake), but should work now with fewer leaves 🙂

As an asthmatic and allergic to everything in nature person, a portable handheld leaf blower that mulches is going to create a huge amount of leaf pollen and dust that will get all over you….the bags fill up too quick, and when you dump them, the “mulch is a mess” and I never found one that had enough power to make it through a serious season….if you have pine needles, forget about it….and wet leaves as well.
Sears used to make a big portable wheel carried gasoline powered power vacuum that I owned in the 1970 and used in on a heavily wooded estate area…it was terrific…but no longer made I guess because I tried to find one….it was not cheap, and today would be a lot more….but it was really effective.
just my old guy opinion and personal experience.

We bought a pull-behind sweeper that goes on the riding mower or ATV. works like a charm, makes no noise and doesn’t get gummed-up on the ethanol gas. Does an acre in no time.

Of course they stopped making the Sears product – it worked!
I was thinking there would be less mold spores floating around with a hand held vac than a lawn blower cause you have to fluff the leaves up into the air with a blower thus spreading the mold spores around. I had hoped the spores would be caught in the vac bag. (DH would be doing this not me. I could not use the hand held vac)
Thank you for your advice 🙂

Don’t fight it, get a ride-on lawn mower/tractor. You can get an inexpensive 42-inch on sale and it makes yard work so much easier. It’s as reliable as a push mower and a lot easier on the feet. You can get a 42-inch Agri-Fab pull-behind sweeper that picks up grass clippings to pine cones and pine needles too.

Is there a particular brand you like, and conversely a brand to stay away from?
We have had other costs to deal with this year. I really am hoping to convince DH to get a riding mower next year. We have to pay someone to mow the lawn, and I’m guessing the cost will double next year as we hopefully, eventually, get more area cleared.Thank you for your advice 🙂

I would avoid any of the ‘bargain store’ brands that are made in China. I bought a US made one from a big box Home store and another with the same name brand as my expensive chainsaw only to discover they were made by the same company here, just different paint and name decal.
One main consideration is the ease of getting parts. The American one has ready availability as it does repair shops. Thing is if you keep the oil changed (use brand name oil) and try to use non-ethanol gas or DO NOT LEAVE ETHANOL GAS IN FOR OVER ONE WEEK, except for a blade change (they sharpen nicely and last a long time) you should be good for a long time. The carbs now mostly have plastic parts and the mess that ethanol causes when it sits clogs them up badly.
One of the main problems is tires, they are tubeless and tend to lose their bead seal and deflate. If you have an power air pump you can easily reseat the bead and reinflate…small price to pay for mowing while sitting. Lasts even longer if you keep it under a roof or outside waterproof cover.
You can look for a used one but research the prices and do not pay more than 60% (my personal limit) for a good looking one as you can’t tell how it is on the inside…never trust the seller.

I have a pot of boneless beef short ribs in a dutch oven. It smells so delicious that my stomach is rumbling! I prepared it the way I usually do – seasoned and browned, covered with horseradish and cooked in wine with thyme, bay leaves and small halved onions – but I’d like to try a Korean barbecue variety one of these days. Czar? Any suggestions?

lilbirdee12’s prayer:
Our Heavenly Father, Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.
Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.
Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump and Mike Pence and their families as they seek to lead America back to You.
Grant us patience, Lord, as the evil ones try to anger us and cause us to fall.
Spread blessings over Israel and Netanyahu.
We humbly ask that You please comfort those who are grieving and in pain.
Thank you Father, for Your Love and the gift of Life.
And, Lord, we pray for all the people who have been affected by the earthquakes and hurricanes.
In Jesus name, we pray. Amen.
