The business of showing up and doing what yer told to do can be found tiresome at times perhaps – but it’s the very best care for yourself. It bothered me, both in the moment and over the long haul for the 15 months I was under treatment, that I literally could not “do for myself”.
I’m remembering the mantra we taught our boys when they were about 4 and 6 years old and we were introducing them to family backpacking in the Sierras, “Backpackers do for themselves.” Such an important personal concept.
But the fact is, there are places and times when we are not able to do for ourselves. The moments (and sometimes hours [or weeks]) of experiencing utter personal helplessness were the most sharply helpless times those months for me. When the helplessness got inside , which it did at times – – not good. Sometimes I even felt helpless to “cast my care” on my heavenly Father, and could only lie in His presence – lie there helpless. And then, of course, in some form of experience, He picked me up and whispered, “It’s ok. I’ve got you.”
So – just sift those thoughts and use whatever is useful to you.
Standlng alongside – – –

Thanksgiving will be here soon. It’s our family’s epic culinary adventure. We usually have a gathering of 40-50 people, extended family, some friends, occasionally someone brings an acquaintance who is away from home for the holiday.
We have the dinner at my brother and sister in law’s house out in the country. They have a large lot, and the past few years my SIL has had a bouncy house set up for the kids, which is great fun for them, and great for the adults too, as it really keeps them occupied while we are still in food stupor.
I can honestly say that I have never had better food anywhere than I do on Thanksgiving. I would say we go all out, and we kinda do, but the thing is, most of us just bring what we love to cook, and are good at. We never discuss the menu, we’ve got it down. Things may vary from year to year a little, but each of us knows what we are depended upon for.
We see family we might not have seen since last Thanksgiving. Lots of years we ooh over the newest baby in the clan. Two years ago it was Conner, only a few months after his heart surgery, his ribs still knitting together, and his mama on fierce alert, carefully showing those who wanted to hold him how he had to be held and protected. This year it will be my youngest grandson, who will just have turned six months old.
This has been a tough year for us. Once again we will draw together and renew our strength, coming away stronger from the sharing. No little part of that comes from the prayer we start with, and the gratitude we express. No matter how tough things are, we each realize how very many blessings we have been given.
And so, I got led down a wandering path this morning, thinking of good times to come, as leaves fall and temperatures cool. Here is a link to help us out with a few tips and maybe some new recipes.

Yesterday was a cold, wet, windy, horrid weather kind of day – and I got a hankerin’ for pumpkin pie. No pumpkin. But….aha! In the fridge were two butternut squash waiting to be cooked sitting right next to exactly one cup of heavy cream. So I made a butternut ‘pumpkin’ pie using a recipe I found a couple of years ago. SO good – creamy smooth custard, and, because I blind baked the crust, no soggy bottom!

oh hale yeah pecan….and you do not have to kill a pumpkin to make them….and today you can buy shelled pecans….not like my childhood when “picken out pecans” was a family evening passtime….not a bunch of fun for a kid….daddy cracked em, and we picked em….had a buncha little metal tools to do it….big deal was a new pecan cracker…like a vice, split the sucker instead of the snippers type that chopped off ends and sides….heck, we had 18 stewart pecan trees in the back….was once part of a pecan orchard….we all though that everyone had free pecans…..

so now jihadi chicken…..I knew the terrorists were actually chicken.

Tagines are from Morocco. I used a regular large saute pan. The flavor is spicy, but not flaming hot. Here’s the recipe. It has a lot of ingredients.
NOTE: I didn’t make the topping (pistachio, cilantro, lemon juice and zest). I added the lemon juice and lemon zest to the stew.

We all do, except the men, which really peeves me because much of the cooking, not all, is done by us women. The women do all the clean up except for putting away the folding chairs and tables. Ain’t fair!
LikeLiked by 3 people
it isn’t a man thing….it happened because of their mothers who never made them clean, sweep or do laundry and fold their own clothes…they think they are not supposed to do the “woman’s work”….and in fact, a lot of those that try, get fussed at because they do not fold or clean like the women were taught by THEIR mothers, and of course….that leads to the fact that there are 27 different ways to wash dishes anyway, and all of them will eventually get a plate and some forks clean….
the effort is in “putting away leftovers” anyway…that is logistics in a single refrigerator, not work….
actually, after I retired and my DW stayed working rather than do housestuff, I became chief cook and bottlewasher….and my secret to this day is no dirty dishes from the cooking when it is all done….I wash, dry, and return every darn thing I use during prep….makes my DW absolutely nuts to be around me in the kitchen…but that is how I roll….and in the end, the grub gets polished off all the same….
I make up for it by bringing her coffee in bed first thing in the morning……lol

Okay, no joking, I will stand with you on this. Most men are raised to be taken care of. I taught my son how to do laundry, cook, clean, etc. My goal was not only to make him a strong man, but a strong man with a happy marriage. My plan seems to have worked beyond my expectations. 🙂

Yep, we did the same. My husband walked in once to find my oldest, then about 10, telling me vacuuming was women’s work. He looked at the boy, asked him how many times he’d seen him (dad) vacuuming. When my son admitted it was a lot, my husband said “You owe your mom an apology.” It was so much more effective that the lecture came from his dad.
It wasn’t my fault I had all boys, and I wasn’t about to be their servant. Everybody had to work.

My husband was in the Navy and either was gone or working all hours. When he was around, he was not good at spending time with our son. Don’t get me wrong, our son did get a good work ethic from him, never did drugs and never dressed like he was just getting out of jail. But, my father was around in that time and taught him a lot of things. Once I went to pick him up and he was doing something to the wheel on my dad’s car. Dad said he was changing the brakes. He was three at the time. Mom videoed it, so I can prove it. And, he did actually do a lot of the work.

boys are naturally curious, and want to try to “do it all by meself..” Hard to do it, but they have to try, while a larger male stands by to keep them from getting hurt…..they have to be able to fail in order to learn how to succeed….and lots of men do not have patients with their young men in training…..some are not grown up emotionally enough to parent boys….but the boys NEED men in their lives…the alpha type, but not the bully type.

My brothers never did housework because they were out in the fields or in the barn from crack of dawn. We girls did housework because we were not out in the fields or in the barn from crack of dawn.
Our sons: they helped in all the normal ways because they not raised on the farm. There wasn’t (and isn’t) women’s work and “men’s work” in our home.
Last year I got roundly chastized by a neighbor because I was moving and stacking two cords of firewood, and then splitting it as I needed it. He said that was not “woman’s work”.
I pointed out to him that since I was doing it, it was obviously woman’s work.
We never thought categories. Just did (and do) what has to be done. Always.
Bought a tire gauge the other day. Les Schwab Tires here is absolutely the best, but I need to be able to check my tires more often. Next potential task is being confident to use the air compressor for inflating them when needed. One things at a time.

Menagarie, I have printed off the beautiful cinnamon bread star you shared the other day. They assure me in the opening lines that it’s not horrendous to do.
We’ll see. Such vague promises do not ordinarily find easy fulfillment in my domestic efforts. Which doesn’t mean the thing doesn’t get done – it’s just not as sweet as the picture that someone else painted.!!
In recent weeks I’ve been deeply appreciating again the two wonderful Home Depot huge candle sconce memorial gifts you provided me with after Grant left. They have now begun to receive their Christmas look. One of them is handling on the fire place mantel and the other in the dining room area on a large wall attachment. They are so important to me, my friend, and bless me year round with memories of how you all surrounded us during those months and Grant’s appreciation and awareness of your presence and prayers. Your presence seemed palpable to us – a very real gift of the Spirit during quiet days of walking out what remained for us. Thank you, thank you always.
I’m so glad I chose to get two of those – one each to Jon and Eric when my blessing is done. And I will include (taped to the bottom of the large square) a detailed report of their origins, who you are, and all the praying done for us deep in the woods. They knew it at the time, but my inclusion of a written report will enable them to explain it to their children.
Hint: if we don’t write down our stories and our blessings – while our children may know them, it will difficult for them to relate them to their children thirty years from now if they don’t have it written in our words……..truth.
Thank you, dear friend.

Thank you Sharon. I am so happy that the small gift gives you joy, and will be passed on. And a great reminder about the stories. I do need to start writing them down.
I used to be involved with the RCIA class at our parish, the group teaching those who seek information about the Catholic Church. One thing I always admired our director for was the reminder she always gave people when giving out bibles, catechisms, and rosaries was to pray for the people who donated them, the people who might have owned them previously to that, and the people even who made them. It was a good reminder that we should pass on prayers as well as gifts.

Hey, P.S. I plan to probably make that recipe for the star thingy this weekend. I’ll let you know how it goes. My stuff usually tastes great and looks…off.
My aunt gave me her recipe for my favorite, all time best ever ever ever EVER!!!! cookies years ago, which I only make during the holidays because I’d need to lose five times the weight I need to lose now if I ever made them more than a couple times a year. Anyhow, hers were perfect little round cookies with perfect little dollops of filling covering exactingly with hard chocolate. They looked like a perfect chocolate covered cherry with a little cookie bottom.
Let’s just say mine are asymmetrical haphazard piles of luscious.

LOL I made oatmeal cookies a while back. They looked real pretty. That is, until I put them in a plastic bag and they turned into granola. 🙄

I still don’t most of my taste function back – so I have to be very careful when doing a new recipe – since I can’t taste it. So I build it and then have to have someone taste it who I trust very much! That they won’t tell me it’s great if it’s not!!
“Asymmetrical haphazard piles of luscious” is a wonderful thing. The test is in the taste, not the appearance…..

Thank you for breakfast, Nyet ~ here’s hoping your day is as good as glazed donuts…. Good Morning everyone!
“The sergeants are shunted forward and they blink and stare up at Gonzo as he leans on the edge of his giant mixing bowl. MacArthur never addressed his troops from a mixing bowl–not even one made from a spare geodesic radio emplacement shell–and certainly de Gaulle never did. But Gonzo Lubitsch does, and he does it as if a whole long line of commanders were standing at his shoulder, urging him on.
“Gentlemen,” says Gonzo softly, “holidays are over. I need an oven, and I need one in about twenty minutes, or these fine flapjacks will go to waste, and that is not happening.”
And something about this statement and the voice in which he says it makes it clear that this is simply true. One way or another, this thing will get done. Under a layer of grime and horror, these two are soldiers, and more, they are productive, can-do sorts of people. Rustily but with a gratitude which is not so far short of worship, they say “Yes, sir” and are about their business.”

I now believe that maple syrup is its own major food group.
It is a reason to have a meal.
It can be used for things I never knew. Almost anything.
Maple syrup.
One of God’s major plant-type gifts.
Since Genesis 2 says that God had Adam name all the animals, etc. I wonder if that’s how he named sausage? Cuz when he thought about maple syrup and pancakes, he knew there would have be something perfect to go with it and it came to him, “Ah! Sausage!”

……………………then later when Eve said, “Well, what on earth is sausage?”
Adam sez, “Dead pig.”
Eve sez, “Oh. What’s a pig.”
Adam sez, “Oh, crap – – – – oh! I got it! That smelly thing right over there that comes from Iowa in big trucks.”
Eve sez, “Well, all righty then. Want I should whip some up for your breakfast?”
Adam sez, “Wouldn’t mind if ya did.”

she cooked Iowa, or a big truck?
If Adam was Jewish, he couldn’t eat pig stuff.
On the other hand, there was no one there to perform a bris on him either, unless Eve got seriously wee weed off at him and lashed out…so to speak….

I won’t be around as much today, so please forgive.

Thank you! I ordered the feta Kalamata scone and they gave me a mushroom scone by mistake 😩. I was so excited because they don’t offer the feta/Kalamata scones that often only to be told an employee misidentified it and they didn’t have any of my scones.
I had a nice time catching up with my friend and the English breakfast tea was delicious as always.
I hope your day is going wonderfully . We have sunshine!!! Woo hoo!

A caller to Rush’s program suggested that Donna is trying to clear the decks of her complicity to make her helming of Michelle O’s bid for office more palatable.
There is definitely more afoot than someone listening to her conscience. If that were the case, she would turn state’s evidence, not write a book and compromise the investigation, plus not try to make herself seem repentant. Beware of what she is selling. She was bought and paid for and had no outward problem with it until they got caught out. If Hillary had been elected she would have been happy to continue on with the deception.

I think Michelle would rather not run. It would take an awful lot to get her back in the White House she hated the office of the presidency, all she liked was the perks and the servants. Money is why Michelle was there she is happy in retirement other than the possible fear of prosecution at some point in her life.

I made a variation of the fennel and apple salad the other day. I wanted to add orange sections, but all I had were red grapefruit, so I sectioned (supremed) a grapefruit. Instead of the vinegar dressing, I made a mayo/sour cream dressing sweetened with honey (lost it’s low calorie advantage!). I like the citrus added. I kept the radishes, but didn’t put in as many.

I finally found fennel again. The stores haven’t had it for a few weeks, and I’m making that salad again. I gave in and got the walnut oil. I have to know if the original recipe is better.

Besides giving 20% of our uranium to Russia, the CFIUS also granted a 35 year lease of a U.S. port to Middle Easterners with ties to Iran and the Muslim Brotherhood.
The port is right next to one of our submarine bases, with easy access to rail to move shipping containers anywhere in CONUS. Any number of nasty surprises could be in one of those containers.

He whined all the way home in the car. He has a slight ear infection, as well as having a tooth pulled and the neutering. Drugs prescribed, but he’s leaving his stitches alone, so he doesn’t have to have a cone of shame.

Poor baby. He doesn’t understand, probably a good thing, what happened. Hope they gave him something to help the pain.
My little girl had to have the cone put back on. She almost brought me to tears when I held it in my hands and called her to me. She came right to me and put her head in the cone without me doing anything. And, she gets 5 different drops in her eyes. The right eye gets 2 different ones twice a day and the left gets 3 different ones 4 times a day. That means morning and night I am putting in 5 different drops at once. 😦

big deal on the stitches is licking on them….absolutely will get them infected…will start itching pretty quickly. I had to put Bitter Apple spray around my last little guy I took to the Birth Control Vet for consultation with a scalpel…..it is mostly alcohol, and can be wiped on instead of spraying….makes licking not tasty. The cone is a disaster….my dogs use a doggie door to the outside, and that is what they are going to try even with a cone…heck, the aussie cattledog brings in logs from the yard to chew on….and he had to learn to turn them sideways…no way he was going to get coned….

I imagine only a fool would make an enemy of Keith. He is so wonderful.
The two sources said Schiller’s comments came in the context of him adamantly disputing the allegations made in the Trump dossier, written by a former British intelligence operative, which describes Trump having an encounter with prostitutes at the hotel during the pageant. Schiller described his reaction to that story as being, “Oh my God, that’s bull—-,” two sources said.

lilbirdee12’s prayer:
Our Heavenly Father, Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.
Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.
Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump and Mike Pence and their families as they seek to lead America back to You.
Grant us patience, Lord, as the evil ones try to anger us and cause us to fall.
Spread blessings over Israel and Netanyahu.
We humbly ask that You please comfort those who are grieving and in pain.
Thank you Father, for Your Love and the gift of Life.
And, Lord, we pray for all the people who have been affected by the earthquakes and hurricanes.
In Jesus name, we pray. Amen.
