LOL While she was trying to hold onto the leash on him, I found myself tensed up like I was trying to help. He lookes like he would be a good boy to have. 🙂

In honor of upcoming Veterans Day here are 2 photos of dogs in WW1.
Sadly in Vietnam the dogs were abandoned there, & only the few smuggled back survived.
I doubt in WW1 the enemy would treat captured dogs as they are treated now by our current enemy. Even if they had to be destroyed, I’m guessing they would not torture, and find evil, painful ways of killing them as is done now by the enemy.

Oh, good grief. What’s not to love about an expressive dog friend.
One of the “requirements” we always had with our dogs was that they habitually and willingly made eye contact with us. We had friends who were amazed at that, and it has actually never occurred to us that that was a learned or trained behavior – we thought all dogs did that, I guess.
Our dogs included one amazingly wonderful street rescue named Lady Charcoal Charmagne (she need that name – after what she had been through); a German S/Pit bull named Bear; a completely useless dumpkof lab named Sarah (one we adopted because her nitwit owners [oh, never mind….] we never abandoned her or mistreated her in any way but, I’m telling you, if a person was of a mind to……………); a Dalmatian named Miss Daisy (we always understood that no matter what was going on, we were just her chauffeurs), and finally, our last, beloved Thorson (Son of Thor – we had wanted to call the dog we go at that point – THOR – but he only weighed 17 pounds – son Son of Thor it had to be. Dear Thorson. He died two years ago.
Love the doggies God gave us. And if Lady and Bear have located Sarah around the Rainbow Bridge, I assume they will have her knocked into shape before we see them all again.
Perhaps Grant has already seen them – it’s been four years almost since he left – if that’s the case, I suspect he has already ‘splained things to her.
Y’know, among the piercing acknowledgements of his absence for me is the occasionally conscious and simple thought that “He’s gone. Gone, Sharon, and he’s not coming back.”
No tears with that. Just piercing fact. Other things, too, but I’m reminded of that in view of the doggie conversation. He and Thorson were completely buddies during Grant’s last four months. That’s a whole story in itself.
Thanks for listening.

Related point – for months after Grant died, Thorson would lay on the top of my recliner in the living room, his usual place, watching out the window for Grant’s truck to appear in the driveway. That about tore my heart out. I would just pet him and leave him there.

Dog trainers say that the first thing to train a puppy is to look into your eyes when you call his name. Paying attention to you on command is the basis for all other training. I didn’t know that until a couple of years ago (and failed dog training on my part!)

Thank you for that info, stella. We did have wonderful relationships and behavior with all of our dogs and I suppose that’s part of it.
When Grant would give them (Daisy and Sierra King) their treats at night, he would also fully requiere them to lay at his feet, side by side, and hold full concentrated gaze for a minute or so – until he gave them the treats. It was quite a ceremony. No special clothing required but it lasted about 2-3 minutes. Lots of treats and lots of conversation to be taken care of at the end of the day, doncha know.

Tucker – as crazy wild as he can be – knows that he must sit and stay while I put his food in his bowl. He only eats when I give him the “okay”. He’s getting there!

I was just thinking about you and Tucker whilst I was cooking my hot cereal. It’s such a job taking on a puppy – but there is a lifelong payoff that makes it so worth it.

My Dad and my Uncle were in that war. My uncle in the trenches in France. Can’t believe my uncle’s name was Adolph. Really. It was.
My Dad set the war right, though, because his (only – no middle) name was Immanuel! Immanuel Larsen all through life – child on the playground on the prairie – Immanuel Larsen. Maybe no middle name was more common then? I really don;’t know. He was born in 1898. Just always thought it was interesting that he had no middle name and that his given was just sort of giant in my perception as a child. Still is.

One of my uncles – my mother’s brother, Allen – was in that war. He was gassed October 7th, 1918 at Argonne Meusc. He was sent home the following February.

Uncle Adolph was gassed, too. He never recovered in terms of normal life.

my dogs have dominate my happiness my entire life….I adore my children..all of them now way grown adults….but my dogs gave my life excitement and fun….and holding them to say last goodbyes was the toughest job I ever faced….I know in my heart that dogs have souls, and will be with us in the final resting place in eternal love and peace. my two today guys, little girl dachs and medium boy aussie cattledog….all rescues…make me laugh everyday, and greet each morning first thing of the household rising…and we talk and eat together then…..just fixing fresh water every morning is a special ritual for me, as is washing and cleaning food bowls….these doggies give back triple fold all the love they get….
