In our family it’s the best food, fun, extended family day of the year. My husband’s huge family gets together and everyone brings their special dishes. No menu planning, we’ve just been doing it for years. You get to eat the things you don’t normally cook, the best of the best. Literally a mountain of food.

My daughter called a couple of weeks ago and because of changes in her life, she told me she and the SIL and grandchildren would only be able to come for Thanksgiving OR Christmas – not both.
We both laughed because it’s really no contest – Thanksgiving! I do the cooking for the standards – and everyone else brings their best dishes – just as you described. It really is my favorite time of year.

Gettin’ to that point where we toss a coin to see if we’ll cook at home or eat out. Main benefit to doin’ our own is lotsa turkey bits left over for gumbo.

Back in the old pre-Katrina days the various restaurants and hotels in NOLA used to offer either set meals or huge buffet. Some of the places were so popular you had to have a reservation, others were so large it was like a communal dining hall.
I remember two that had buffet-style Thanksgiving dining, there were two huge table arrays, back to back, down the center of the dining room with separate stations on the sides. Appetizers, especially shrimp and oysters prepared a dozen ways, half a dozen soups/gumbos, turkey, ham, roast beef and other meats…the list goes on. You could, and we did, eat for hours. Oh yeah, the drinks too…….

Luckily DH is allergic to turkey, so of course we get take out from a wonderful home cooked family restaurant nearby. (Actually we do that every major holiday. I’m done with cooking and cleaning. That’s no “holiday” for me!)

The father of my high school boyfriend (Russ Phillips) played with Armstrong for about 1-1/2 years, after Jack Teagarden. After that he retired to a more conventional lifestyle, so that his son could attend school. Really nice people.

Armstrong was a bigger thing in NOLA some years back than he is now. Seems traditional jazz and NOLA music’s losing ground to more modern venues, used to be more jazz clubs too.

Illustrative vid with the above-view of his playing. How can anyone do this?
I can sing and play, but my right and left hands don’t play well separately, at all. Actually, my left hand just can’t do much on the keys but bassnotes and simple Majors with added fourths resolving into Majors. Minors, 7ths and 9ths and 13ths, naturally, but an intelligent, walking left-hand bassline, while the right hand still goes off solo, boggles my little mind.

OK, Nyet, I know it’s sort of against tradition, but let’s start off with a smooth Peach Schnapps in a vintage glass:
“The word ‘schnapps’ comes from the Old Norse ‘snappen’, meaning to snatch or gulp. That indicates how the drink should be taken: ice-cold in small shots as part of a meal. In Denmark it’s traditional for each person on the table to stand up in turn and shout a toast (skal) after which everyone drinks the schnapps down in one. Across Germany and Scandinavia, it’s drunk neat, quickly and generally with a salute.”
Now, the above paragraph indicates that “each person ON the table” stands–so does that mean I have to climb up ON the table and yell “SKAL” and then give a snappy salute to the rest of the gang who are already ON the table or do I stand alone up there and then each of y’all in turn climb up after I’ve been assisted back to my chair? And do we have to drink a glass with each person who yells? I mean these rituals are things we don’t want to flub.
So, after all that is done, I’ll take to the plate and scarf down those fine edibles…and maybe follow that up with another Peach Schnapps…this time sitting down and giving out with a feeble moan. Thanks!

In the early 80s there was an apple schnapps craze in our town, You’d go into the bars or restaurants and get small, heavy glasses of apfel schnapps served ice cold…schnapps shots. Tasted great and was a good accompaniment to lots of good meals but could make walking difficult.

Had to have the porch rebuilt – the roof was falling down and I chose to reuse the old boards that formed the ceiling. They all need to be sanded and repainted. So far, I have six or seven done. It’s because the media and police are all cowards. Not just in America, but throughout the West.
The plain and simple truth.
Imagine working in an occupation where you had to be fearful, all the time, of saying the truth? Especially in occupations which formerly were expected to actually be brave and tell the truth? Our news media, our law enforcement agencies, our investigative bodies — they all used to be expected to tell the truth, no matter where it led.
Now they’re all cowards. And if, perchance, a Sheriff Joe pops up, they all try and take him down, like a slave leaving the plantation.
I don’t see an earthly out, from all this. Maybe Hollywood and TV will collapse under the weight of it’s unbelievable transgressions, and that would help a bit to stem this tide. We did elect a Sheriff Joe to the office of POTUS, after all.
But they’re all cowards, afraid to tell the truth, afraid to notice.
Because noticing is racist.

Noticing is racist, now.
Riot in Chuck-E-Cheese? Yup, we were all correct in our assumptions. Funny how noticing trends works. So, don’t notice trends, or you’re racist. Flash-mob beating of a white guy? Yup, even though the articles all omitted it, turns out we were right. Because we notice trends. Even though we’re not supposed to. We can’t help it. We were born that way. You know? Intelligent.
Headline a few months ago: “Nun Raped behind Church”. I was right. I even guessed the city correctly — it was indeed Philly.
Why are we always right, when the media leave out the details?
The citizens of the USSR figured out this One Weird Trick long before the USA needed to. We know the truth by what they fearfully leave out of their reports. And because we notice, and have memory.

Daniel Greenfield has been on a rhetorical roll, lately.
He’s quite a writer, and knows how to cut to the chase. Or, to the bone.
This guy embodies the honesty the Media doesn’t have. I don’t, and never have, considered writers of Editorials or Opinion pieces, usually found at the middle of the paper, with the letters-to-the-editor, to be The Media. It was in the early 90s when I discovered the astonishing fact that the truth was found in the Editorials, and the editorializing was found in the paper’s actual Articles. I was reading five newspapers a day, every day. Boston Globe, Boston Herald, NYT, WSJ, USA Today, and sometimes even The Pheonix. The subcontractors, paid per column, were the real workers, telling the real truth. The regular employees, not at all. They were the slaves, injecting narrative into everything, because that’s what these proto-SJWs did.
The columnists were the only reason to buy the newspaper.
It’s why we got the internet, I think.

As it’s very clear the government can’t/won’t do it’s one job and that is to defend/protect our country then it’s time to stop all immigration. Nobody has a right to be allowed entrance into our country. I’m not sure if this in the President’s power to do, but if so then he needs to do so.
We have enough of our own crazies to deal with in addition all those the government has allowed here and the illegal immigrants. We need to secure our borders, deport all illegals and those who have overstayed their visas, locate all those with visas that are a threat and revoke their visas and send them back, locate all the sleeper cells and deal with them. All of this should be done before we even think about any further immigration and then we should be extremely cautious in who we allow in.
It’s so bad now it would take probably 30 years to clean it up if it isn’t already too late.

Poor Traveller, they could not leave him alone even after death, but eventually he was laid to rest. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traveller_(horse) Finally in 1971, Traveller’s remains were buried in a wooden box encased in concrete next to the Lee Chapel on the Washington & Lee campus, a few feet away from the Lee family crypt inside, where his master’s body rests.

Destroy the World Trade Center and he’s languid and laconic and blasé. Obstruct plans to convert the ravaged site into a memorial bike path and he’ll hunt you down wherever you are.
So two hours after the attack, Governor Cuomo, Mayor de Blasio and other New York bigwigs assembled for the usual press conference to give the usual passive shrug – this is the way we live now, nothing to be done about it, etc, etc. [like London’s Muslim mayor Khan]. But they are changing us. I’ve written before about what I’ve called the Bollardization of the Western World.
Why? Why does every public place have to get uglified up just because Geraldo doesn’t want to address the insanity of western immigration policies that day by day advance the interests of an ideology explicitly hostile to our civilization?
And so, on a buckled, broken bicycle on the Hudson River Greenway, the wheel comes full circle. America and every other major western nation thought the appropriate response to 9/11 was to show how nice we are by dramatically increasing the rate of mass Muslim immigration. Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov was among the many beneficiaries of the west’s suicide by virtue-signaling. “Sayfullo” is a Central Asian rendering of “Saifallah” – or “Sword of Allah”. Hmm, what a fascinating name! Do you think whichever brain-dead bureaucrat who gave Sword of Allah’s online Green Card application the once-over (assuming anyone did) so much as gave the name a second glance? And so, because we did not take an act of war seriously in 2001, we are relentlessly harassed and diminished by unending micro-jihad – in Copenhagen, in Toulouse, in San Bernadino, in Calgary, Barcelona, Parsons Green …and now on a bike path 300 feet from where we came in sixteen years ago. Three months ago, on the anniversary of 9/11, I wrote:
In any war, you have to be able to prioritize: You can’t win everything, so where would you rather win? Raqqa or Rotterdam? Kandahar or Cannes? Yet, whenever some guy goes Allahu Akbar on the streets of a western city, the telly pundits generally fall into one of two groups: The left say it’s no big deal, and the right say this is why we need more boots on the ground in Syria or Afghanistan. Yesterday President Trump said he was committed to ensuring that terrorists “never again have a safe haven to launch attacks against our country”.
By that he means “safe havens” in Afghanistan. But the reason the west’s enemies are able to pile up a continuous corpse count in Paris, Nice, Berlin, Brussels, London, Manchester, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Orlando, San Bernadino, Ottawa, Sydney, Barcelona, [Your Town Here] is because they have “safe havens” in France, Germany, Britain, Scandinavia, North America, etc. Which “safe havens” are likely to prove more consequential for the developed world in the years ahead..? In Afghanistan, we’re fighting for something not worth winning, and we’re losing. In Europe, Islam is fighting for something very much worth winning, and they’re advancing. And, according to all the official strategists in Washington and elsewhere, these two things are nothing to do with each other.
So now eight grieving families and dozens more who’ll be living with horrific injuries for the rest of their lives are told by Cuomo and De Blasio and the rest of the gutless political class behind their security details that there’s nothing to do except to get used to it.
I don’t want to get used to it – and I reiterate my minimum demand of western politicians that I last made after the London Bridge attacks: How many more corpses need to pile up on our streets before you guys decide to stop importing more of it?
If your congressman or senator says that’s not on his agenda, what he means is he’s willing to sacrifice you and your loved ones in the suicide lottery of diversity.

Excellent article.
How many more corpses? I ask this to folks. Where is your red line? I never get a concrete number. “Okay, then: how many more corpses of your actual family and friends?”
“Shut up. Walking Dead is about to start, and I have to Facebook now.”

Excellent comments at the Steyn article, too.
“NYC Strong!” Tee shirts will be sold today, probably have been already. Like Paris Strong!, London Strong!, San Bernadino Strong! and Las Vegas Strong!. It’s an admission of defeat, pretending otherwise. We can solve this with Tee shirts!
Yep, terror attacks are just a fact of life we’re all gonna have to get used to. Make more bollards, open up bollard factories — instead of stopping the people the bollards are erected to defend against in the first place. I wonder how many poor Muslim “refugees” will be employed at the newly-needed bollard factories?
Even a sponge has a maximum saturation point. I hope and pray America has reached it’s saturation point with Islam, or will soon reach that point.

Time does indeed fly.
“Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.” — Groucho Marx.
Fruit flies like empty beer cans, too. And my eyeballs, when I’m just trying to read my monitor. And my nostrils. And as soon as I notice them, they see that, and fly away. Very intelligent for insects. They learn over time. I can’t slap them between my hands any more. I had to evolve to snapping them with damp towels, and the ever-useful flyswatters. They love the bathroom mirror, for some reason. Killed more of them there than anywhere other than the kitchen cabinet faces.
I don’t have any, any more. I slaughtered 200 or more last week, over a couple of days. Now I keep my empties in the freezer.
Fruit flies are more annoying than houseflies. Houseflies just land on you and annoy you. Fruit flies want your eyes, when you just want to read. Both are of the Devil.
I have peace, now, though. I killed them all. Every single one.

There’s a message for America somewhere in that story.

One more cynical piece, from WND, about that so-called “church” in Alexandria, VA, which is about to remove references to George Washington, and about their twisted theology.

Some people wonder why I’m depressed, lately.
Ignorance is bliss. That axiom is a truism. I’d probably be a lot happier if I just watched movies and TV, listened to radio and never read any news. I see it all around me. They’re all ignorant, but they’re all happy. Except when commanded to hate Trump and any idea remotely conservative, but they’re all happy most times.
Me, I read all news, all the time, when I’m not at work. And all the comment sections, and all the arguments. I’m not “triggered”, either, when I read the crazy crap on these message boards. I just read, and absorb, and attempt to understand. I read all sides, and seldom comment. I only comment here, and occasionally at Vox Day’s site. You are my friends. At other sites I just prefer to read.
And I’m not a happy person, most times. I know too much. I’ve never even been to war and yet I’ve seen too much.
Everyone around me watches horror movies on their night off.
Reading the news, I suppose I do, too.

Wooly, it’s very difficult to filter all the disturbing news out. I get it. Sometimes it feels like there’s a very deliberate attempt to dispirit those of us who love God and our country. Don’t give in to it. You have to stay strong, even when it seems overwhelming. We will win. We are winning, but the other side is going to throw everything they have at us, as they are losing their hold on society. These verses give me peace, maybe they would comfort you: Romans 8:38 – 39 and Proverbs 3: 5 – 6.

red pill, blue pill.
I suppose the Eloi/sheep are happy for a while.
What is right is usually what is hard. The narrow gate is narrow after all.
Take a break, and limit yourself. Balance news with prayer and the music and photography that brings you joy, and remember God loves you.

lilbirdee12’s prayer:
Our Heavenly Father, Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.
Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.
Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump and Mike Pence and their families as they seek to lead America back to You.
Grant us patience, Lord, as the evil ones try to anger us and cause us to fall.
Spread blessings over Israel and Netanyahu.
We humbly ask that You please comfort those who are grieving and in pain.
Thank you Father, for Your Love and the gift of Life.
And, Lord, we pray for all the people who have been affected by the earthquakes and hurricanes.
In Jesus name, we pray. Amen.

Today was “movie day” with my friend. I almost always have trouble finding something I am willing to sit through. Not today. I remembered this true story when it happened. The name of the movie is Only the Brave. It is 2 hrs and 14 min long, but it moved so fast I didn’t notice. Well filmed, well acted, and great script in my opinion. I highly recommend it if you like well developed characters or lots of action.
This User Review by Amthermandes, Ouch My Heart, at the bottom of the page, IMDB really covers it well.
