Talk about sounds of fall…my two Great Horned Owls are out calling. We have two that show up around now and settle in the old growth trees in the low area. They are out hunting at night and will call to each other, progressively getting closer and closer. They’re in the taller pines now, about 200 feet south. We were lucky enough to see them once a few years back, they came into the trees just to the west and stared at us for about a half hour.
We usually have the outside cats in but if they are out they’re usually out front where they can hide on top of the truck or cars were coyotes to ncome around but when the owls are here we make double sure they are inside the garage as the owls have been known to be cativerous.

Love this style of music. It’s like IDM, only with more ethnic traces, borrowing from all over the world. (Appropriating? Who cares. It’s good, and it sounds good.)
IDM is Intelligent Dance Music, similar to EDM, Electronic Dance Music, only more complex, melodic, musical, and cerebral than that.
I play non-lyrical stuff like this when I cruise around town, or to the beach and the lighthouse, at 7 AM.

I was just playing this on my big JBL Bluetooth speaker, and my neighbor lady comes up the fire escape, just as I hit the volume-down a few notches. She tells me it sounds like porno music. I just think it’s a kickass beat.
I told her, for real, “I wouldn’t know, really. Do you watch a lot of porno? So much that you think of porno when you hear a style of music?”
SMH.
And here I thought porno music was Barry White and Al Green beats. Lots of “chicka chicka wow wow” on the funk guitar. I think I may have seen one in the 80s.

Stella, when I was a child we used to go to my grandparents’ house in Kansas every summer. Most times we went through the Ozarks. How I loved that area, the little restaurants, the mountainous scenery.
My dad bought me a copy of The Shepherd of the Hills. If you haven’t read that book, I couldn’t recommend it more. It was hard to find outside the Ozarks for many years, but is back in print now because of the popularity of the Branson area. He said my grandmother, who taught out on the plains in a little one room schoolhouse, made all her students read it. And of course all her children.
Anyhow, your picture brings back good memories for me. Thanks!

I know I’ve read that book 20 times or so. Probably 10 times as a kid and teenager. It’s about time again.
IMO the book has it all. Romance, mystery, epic right against wrong, man against nature, and a vivid portrait of a land and people long gone now. One of my top favorite books, definitely the one I reread the most.

Regarding very old books that are amazing, have you read At the Back of the North Wind, by George MacDonald? He was far ahead of his time. This predates C.S. Lewis by decades, and is a magical book. I found it in an explicitly Christian library when I was working on a farm in NH, in ’97-8.

The book was called, “Stories That Never Grow Old”, and I just found a used copy of the 1970’s reprint at Amazon! It was edited by Watty Piper, the person who wrote “The Little Engine That Could”. The book has great stories, and is beautifully illustrated. My copy (1949 edition) now lives at my daughter’s house.

I’m reading it now, and for the next few days, just in HTML.
It took me a while to understand the first page. The word ‘lowed is used many times, and that was my brick wall. Then I got to understanding that it meant “allowed” in every single case. “I allowed myself to believe that. I acknowledged that. I let that in as a truth.” In 1909, words meant a smart piece more than they do today. But it took me an hour to figure out that first page of dialogue, because I didn’t ‘low that word to permeate the linguistic-brain barrier. Now that I understand the lingo, I’m off and running.

Perhaps that’s why I keep going back to it, to measure how I’m coming along against the old shepherd, and my friends in Mutton Hollow.

I’m reading it right now. About to chapter 5. Excellent writing. When I was a kid I was reading L. Ron Hubbard’s Mission Earth pulp decalogy. And Larry Niven. And the plethora of Star Trek™ novels.
This, on the other hand, is really good writing. (No offense to Niven, Pournelle, C.S. Lewis, Tolkein, Brian Jacques, or Aazimov.)

Yesterday I commented about how sometimes my little camera makes pictures look unusual because of the lighting. This first painting was at sunset, but facing east. The clouds were such a blazing pink, I don’t think the camera could handle the brightness. The second was at dusk facing south on a gray day. It magnified the bluish tones more than they actually already looked, but it is an effect I have seen in paintings even before photography. The third is a photo of 3 or 4 trees growing closely together that all came to color at different times, giving this wide variety of color in a small area.

G&C, I love that you’re using a real film camera. I also love the subject matter.
I don’t love the watermarks. At all. There’s no need for them. Or at least, there’s no need for them to be made quite that obstructive to the image. There are better methods, if you feel the need to watermark. Copyright exists the moment you took the picture. Adding words and letters to the picture subtracts from the picture.
Are you currently framing and selling these, in a store, somewhere? If so, I can understand. Gotta make money.
I have a friend who had to kick a mom and son out of his photography studio store in town, because they were going through his matted photos — that he personally shot, and printed, and matted — and literally picking the best ones and taking carefully-framed photos of HIS photography, right in front of him. They were befuddled, because we live in a society of IP thievery. They actually didn’t understand that it was wrong, just as most people under 40 don’t understand that stealing music or movies instead of paying for them is wrong.
Your photos would look a whole lot better with much more subtle watermarks. I don’t use them at all. Because I don’t care who uses my pics, at all. I don’t even want attribution. Seriously. Anyone want to copy my pic, and then lie and say they took it? I don’t care. I know the truth, and so do they, and that shame’s on their head.
My 2 cents.

Hi Wooly. That is actually a little inexpensive digital camera I bought at the drugstore years ago.
About the “watermark” – Yesterday I commented that I do not have the ability to watermark my photos with Paint. Yes I plan on selling them. I also take many photos just for examples for future landscape paintings which I also plan on selling. I tried to make them less obvious, even making the individual letters different colors, but I am noticing they seem more obvious when posted than when I am making them. I will try to make it less obvious. I tried making them smaller, but then I tested them and managed to wipe them out in under 2 minutes.
Honestly, even if I wasn’t selling them, if I’m the one as in one of those photos going behind a dumpster and climbing on a rock wall, or in the other standing out in 10 degree weather, or hanging out of a car window to take them, and then sort and crop the pictures, I feel someone should not “steal” it. They can spend $50. on a camera, stand in the freezing cold at dawn or dusk, and go to crazy lengths to get a shot a lot easier than I can. I put them out there now for people’s enjoyment, not so they can use them without attribution as to my work in producing them. I also wonder about people who, as you said, in general steal works of art whether visual or musical etc. What talent are they NOT developing in themselves because they are busy deleting the watermark/attribution and taking another artists work. I have taken over 20,000 photos the past few years for a limited number of ones good enough to sell. Are these the Collectivist, “everyone gets a prize” generation people? Well let’s see them take the time and effort to produce these – they won’t. It’s really is great you don’t care who uses your pictures. I guess I just am bothered that I have seen quite a bit of people deleting attributions, and it really bothers me.

The guy who kicked that mom and son out of his store, for stealing his pics with their phone cameras, is the guy who got me into this apartment. 11 years ago, when I met him, he just got his first camera.
Now he has his third store. And a 6-ink super-wide Roland printer, that can print from rolls of canvas (or paper, or vellum) nearly three feet wide.
His photos are stupendous when you see them matted and framed.

I sometimes wonder how people live with themselves. I could never imagine doing something for charity and then not giving the money to the person or family.
I’ve been part of benefit auctions, dinners, etc. before and when it was money that belonged to someone else I always wanted to get the money into their hands immediately.
People who months later still haven’t given the money have cheated the person it was to benefit and cheated the people who donated for that person/family.
Every time I start having a little hope in people and society, someone comes along and reminds me why I lost hope to begin with.

michellc I don’t know who disappointed you in this manner, but there are hundreds of thousands of people who quietly, and with no real thanks, go out and volunteer time, goods, and money, but NO ONE EVER HEARS ABOUT IT. They don’t have trumpets blaring ahead of them donating. They do it quietly, sometimes because they want to do it that way, sometimes because the people who are accepting the help are truly incapable of thanking them, and sometimes because those accepting the help are thoughtless. Whether or not a person gets publicly thanked does not matter to the giver. There will always be both good and bad among us. I understand how OVERALL not hearing about the multitudes of good people could lead someone to think they do not exist, and therefore lose hope. Many, many good people exist, not just the bad ones we hear about. I think the media especially likes to point out the bad, not only for ratings, but to keep us discontented and without peace. Do not be robbed of hope. It is a precious gift from God.

NO ONE EVER HEARS ABOUT IT
That’s not true. Not as many as you’d like, maybe. But not “no one”. Certainly not your benefactors, or those close by.
A stone thrown into a pond causes a lot of ripples. Concentric circles that expand and grow in circumference, even if they lessen in amplitude over time. It’s good to keep throwing stones into the pond. One kindness. (Splash!) Outward the ripples go. Another. (Splash!) It’s the “butterfly effect” only applied to human kindness and goodness.
I know hopeless people. I try to lob stones into their pond as much as possible.

All of the people who donated to what I’m talking about did it for a person, not for those who have grandstanded about what they did to use on themselves.
It’s just frustrating because others who were going to do something similar stepped back and allowed them to do it. Now months later, they still haven’t given the money to who it was raised for.
They wanted all the glory and wanted to be acknowledged publicly numerous of times of what they were doing, never once acknowledging those who got donations to auction off who just gave it to them so there would just be one place, instead of several. Not that any of those people wanted to be known, because most wanted to stay anonymous.
I was already turned off by the tooting your own horn bs, but now finding out they still haven’t given the money is really ticking me off.
If it wasn’t for the fact that those supposed to be on the receiving end don’t want anything said, I would be broadcasting what they’ve done to all the people who donated money and items.
I just have faith that what comes around goes around and one day they’ll pay a price, it just might not be in this world.

Sadly people who are doing “good” are often not held accountable.
Personally I think people who take money meant for a specific cause or person and use it to benefit themselves are self serving, vile pigs who have no human compassion but pretend to be good people in order to keep the people that they take advantage of from speaking out against them.
Common, arrogant, self promoting, thieves.
Sorry Michelle, I hope it wasn’t the money meant for the young race car driver. Turn the people in to the IRS on April 16th if you have any way to prove anything.
Thieves steal it is what they do, guaranteed they won’t declare their windfall to the IRS.

Sure I’m not sure that my email is in there? Maybe you know otherwise? If it isn’t there Stella can send you my email if it is ok with her.

I guess it’s not. I thought I had seen it.
If Stella doesn’t care, she can send you my e-mail or send me your e-mail.

Sure I’d put it here but we seem to have a lot more readers than posters so I’m not sure I want it out there. Do you have Twitter? I can send it to you in a private message.

I don’t do twitter. I tell you what I’ll make me an e-mail account that won’t matter if someone sends things to. lol

It’s putting a line under the address, it’s wg_nanny. If I get hate mail and/or spam by posting it at least it won’t be my regular e-mail. lol

I posted late yesterday about a new fire here in socal. Its gotten much bigger but still burning in the forest. 700+ acres. Air quality is pretty bad. Very pretty area of forest burning too.

Its a big one to be sure. And then, this am, all our mailbixes were broken into. All the front doors popped open with a pry bar. Hopefully we can get the post office to replace them because they are pretty old. But a credit alert on myself and husband, holding the mail, thinking now we have people cruising the neighborhood for theft, its very aggravating.
I also did learn from the postal inspector a new service they offer called “informed delivery” where you receive scans of all your incoming mail when you sign up.

Welcome to the real America…and they wonder why people don’t evacuate. A redux of Katrina where armed neighborhood residents protected as much of their blocks as they could, “You loot, WE SHOOT!” signs painted on 4X8 sheets of plywood were everywhere but houses were looted all over the city. We even had a caravan of pickups headed west out of the city that was supposed to be full of looted items was monitored but never stopped…no definite reasons why but we had our suspicions.
Nary a vending machine of any kind that had a coin box was left unlooted, even my desk drawers in a Federally rented building were looted and a bag with about $50 in change was taken. There’s nothing like a disaster to bring out the best and the worst in folks.

There was an incident with a guy who went out onto the rocks so his girlfriend could take his picture. A big wave swept him into the water, and he was lucky to get hold of the rocks and was pulled out. I guess it was a very close thing.

I went straight out into Lake MI, about a mile out, on the ice. One ice mountain range, followed by 3/4 miles of moonscape, and another ice mountain range, which was cut off exactly in half. You get to the top, you’re looking down a giant cliff to a raging Lake Michigan, with chunks of ice bigger than factories floating up and down.
We were in our early teens, with shorts and t-shirts, it was that warm. And we were that stupid. It was late Feb or early March, and it was warm enough to wear t-shirts and shorts, and we went a mile out on the ice.
When we got back to shore, we watched, and heard the icy-cliff promontory we were standing on fall into the lake. We both realized then how stupid we were.
I wish I had the pics we took out there. It was surreal. My buddy Jason has them. I know he does. On 110 film.

These two just won Halloween. Sorry to all the runners-up.

lilbirdee12’s prayer:
Our Heavenly Father, Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.
Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.
Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump and Mike Pence and their families as they seek to lead America back to You.
Grant us patience, Lord, as the evil ones try to anger us and cause us to fall.
Spread blessings over Israel and Netanyahu.
We humbly ask that You please comfort those who are grieving and in pain.
Thank you Father, for Your Love and the gift of Life.
And, Lord, we pray for all the people who have been affected by the earthquakes and hurricanes.
In Jesus name, we pray. Amen.
