Great day at the VA…surprise! Of course the sign in procedures at the reception site were a sheer disaster and thru Czarina-based intervention I managed to finally get into my appointment without ever signing in. Once in though a most competent and engaging audiologist (according to many one of the few VA bright spots) thoroughly tested me and fitted me with custom earmolds for a top line hearing aid. I’ll get a neat bluetooth device that will allow me to connect my TV to the aids so I can adjust the volume to my needs without Czarina getting mad and throwing domestic cheeses at me. Aids also bluetooth to my phone.
I’m truly surprised, I was expecting to get something from the 60s that bolted to my head and was powered by a 12-volt motorcycle battery attached to a harness…nope, got stuff you’d find in a commercial store that one’s insurance most likely wouldn’t pay for. Not too long ago the VA was telling military with service-connected hearing loss: “TS, dude, it’s part of the business, suck it up and go sit on someone else’s doorstep. To this day getting a disability rating for hearing loss is a fight and ratings are loooooow.
I’m more than happy with this, I even get free maintenance and replacement for life. I’m gonna take advantage of this quickly lest the VA recover its alter ego.

I have noticed in my city and at the stores a sugnificant decrease in Halloween decorating and merchandise. Very little variety of items compared to previous years and smaller quantities, except basic candy, of what is on the shelves. Lots of candy from china and mexico, yuck. Very few homes decorated. Ours is the only one on our street. I noticed Christmas being pushed earlier than normal.
    How about you all?
Lack of interest in Halloween or perhaps a desperation for significant income for businesses via Christmas shopping?

It seems about like other years here. Our stores (the few I go into) seem to have the same amount of stuff, but I don’t pay a lot of attention to it so I could be wrong.

I don’t give out treats as my dogs would likely have nervous breakdowns.

I stopped giving out candy a couple of years ago. I had between 100 and 200 kids every year. Got quite expensive; Stella didn’t mind it in later years, but I’m sure Tucker would go nuts. What I used to do was to remove the screen/glass in the upper part of my storm door, and pass candy out through the top. That way the dog couldn’t get out.

I used to have a window corner opposite and take the screen out so the beagles didnt go psycho trying to get out to see the kids. My son wants to walk the neighborhood but no decorations, probably nobody passing treats either. We got very few kids last year, but 3 streets over was crowded. Lots of porch lights without candy(they obviously dont know the rules).
Not sure if he will be as excited this year but I have to try, for him. He has a dress up in preschool and I think a city has a daytime party nearby. I always saw it as a good way to meet the neighbors. I guess I just am out of the loop. 😯

            Same here, too.

            The tree huggers hate street lights;
so, very dark at night here. Have light
            on 365 at night between garage doors;
but for Halloween, the three spotlights
above shine brightly. Hey, the kids need
some light in their life! It’s only one time
a year for 2 hours. It’s not going to kill
the neighbors to wear their sunglasses
for two hours at night (6pm to 8pm). 😉

Made yellow pea soup with ham today. Used leeks and some onion, fennel instead of celery, and carrots. Really good – had a ham bone and cubed ham; bought a 10# ham on sale last May and froze it. Glad I did, because it’s good for cool weather cooking.

Did you get a big fresh fennel or dried? Some things are so pricey i either cant find them or am afraid to use it and not like it. My mothers answer is to freeze everything, but she does it indefinitely and 😝.

Fresh fennel. I got it to make Menagerie’s fennel, apple and radish salad. I used the oldish leftovers (the stems) instead of celery.

Fresh fennel is new to me too, but it is wonderful in the salad.

This salad with pineapple tidbits added:

              Serves 4-6

              4 cups shredded green cabbage
              1 cup heavy whipping cream
              4 tablespoons sugar
              4 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
              1/2 teaspoon caraway seeds
              1/2 teaspoon celery seed
              salt & pepper, to taste.

In large bowl, whip cream until stiff peaks form.
Add sugar, vinegar, caraway seeds, and celery seeds. Mix with whipped cream.
Add shredded cabbage and toss in creamy mixture.
Taste, then add salt and pepper to your taste. I usually like just a little pepper, but others in my family like a little salt added. Taste and make your own decision.

I might add a bit of mayo to the mix.

Spent the weekend at a friend’s ranch, and his wife made these awesome biscuits. She thought freezing the butter and grating it was too much work, so she just tosses it and the mixed dry ingredients into her food processor and gives it a few quick pulses, then pinches any remaining big butter chunks between her fingers to make flakes. Other than that, she stuck to the recipe.

I can hardly wait to try this myself, after we finish consuming the biscuits and scones she sent us home with.

Our Heavenly Father, Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.

Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.

Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump and Mike Pence and their families as they seek to lead America back to You.

Grant us patience, Lord, as the evil ones try to anger us and cause us to fall.

We humbly ask that You please comfort those who are grieving and in pain.

My guess is President Trump would have just said no it isn’t going to happen that way. The other reason dangled was that Schiller took about a 33% cut in pay.

So IOW when POTUS and Schiller leave office buy Schiller’s book 😉.

She did have it catered, though she made 15 pounds of potato salad by herself, she ended up with about 90 people floating through. How wonderful it was to celebrate life ! And the food was great 🙂 .
