Too high on the approach, landing speed too fast, and your right Czar, should have powered up and go around……….that’s almost a dead stick landing….

Talk about short landings and high-pucker take-offs, this tactical landing/take-off demonstration at a UK airshow shows how the C-7As, C-123s and C-130s got the bullets and beans into Khe Sahn. What the demo doesn’t show is that the NVA would be shooting everything from AKs to the .50 DsHKs to mortars and Katusha rockets at the plane and runway. One tactic was to fire mortars at the runway well ahead of the plane to see if shrapnel would disable it or if a wheel would hit a crater and crash the plane.
The plane lands with rear ramp open and taxis as the crew pushes the palletized cargo out, rolls it right off the fual rails. Plane doesn’t generally stop unless it has to pick up dead or wounded, it hot taxis right out and takes off at full power, almost vertical climb.

my older USAF son flew C 130s into Panama and Bosnia….said they never came to a stop in Bosnia, just dropped the back, pushed out the pallets and swung around to take off….blew all the cardboard “houses” that the natives had built around the runway for safety….no armor, no weapons…eventually got a flare system…no help during a hot landing at all…..

Didn’t work all of the time, runway at KhecSahn was populated with dead cargo planes, soon as it was safe to they were bulldozed off the flight line. There was armor, I still have my chest rig, but it weighed a ton and was next to impissible to work in…also the plane was a much bigger target and if it got hit you had a much harder time getting out of the hulk if you were wearing a vest of steel plate.
Last unit I was with in the AF was working on the newer aerial delivery systems but at Khe Sahn they’d have been about as the other systems as the mountains were a major problem, wasn’t unusual for the base to be socked in or to have the loads blown off course. In a stroke of irony I got stationed with an Army unit about 25 years later that was still trying to do the same thing. Aircraft and helicopter pilots largely still do the same thing, roll the dice and try to get the product to the end user under every possible condition.

Good thing about it is thst all you hsve to do, if you have one of the conditions, is to provide medical proof you hsve it and a 214 showing Vietnam service. No muss, no fuss, no bother, they are nound by law. It also gets you Comvst Related Specisl Comprnsation status as VN service and agent orange automatically make it combat related. Surviving spouse then gets not only any retirement pay portion you left but the DIC payment.

        • Nostalgic thread even for me. Go figure. I took an aerospace course as an elective when I moved to MA in my Sr. year in HS. I had enough credits coming from MI, that I could pick four elective courses. One was sketching. One was World History. (No, my stupid little mostly black/hillbilly school board in MI never taught us World History. Or logic. Or reason, or any foreign languages.) The other was flying planes.

Our teacher was Mr. Dodge. He was a gruff fellow, older than dirt, to us. The first three quarters of the year were bookwork, understanding aerodynamics and the history of flight, from the Wright Bros. to Sikorsky, and then understanding weather maps and all the markings on them, and then understanding the plane itself.

Then we got to actually fly, at the end of the year. We went to Plum Island, and all three of us 17-18 year-olds got to actually take off and land this little four-seater. Mr. Dodge had the rudder on landing.

A buddy at work tells me of when he was flying planes in Alaska, about an airstrip where, when you took off, you took off down the mountain. And when you fell off the edge, you FELL OFF THE EDGE, because even by the end of the airstrip, you didn’t have enough speed for lift to occur. You just fell off, and kept accelerating until you did.

This guy is around my age. Lived ten times the life I did. He’s jumped out of planes 84 times, and off buildings and bridges and cliffs (BASE jumping) 30 or so times. Fearless, right?

He’s afraid to pray to Christ. How silly is that?

    Berkeley Patriot cancels ‘Free Speech Week’;
Milo plans a march on Sproul

    By Frances Dinkelspiel,
    Sept. 23, 2017, 9:32 a.m.

The Berkeley Patriot, the conservative student political group behind “Free Speech Week,” has decided to cancel the event, mostly for safety reasons, the group’s attorney told Berkeleyside on Saturday morning.

“The university has made it impossible to hold the event,” said Marguerite Melo, a Visalia attorney with the firm Melo and Sarsfield. “A lot of these speakers have withdrawn. To have an empty gesture of ‘Free Speech Week,’ when there are no speakers is impossible. And the university couldn’t guarantee our speakers would be safe.”

“We are very disappointed,” she said. “We are going to cancel. We have made a determination, or our clients have, that it is just not safe. If we had had Zellerbach Hall, that would be a different story. But my clients didn’t want to be responsible, even morally, if something happened.”

The Berkeley Patriot notified UC Berkeley officials in a letter sent by email about 6:13 a.m.

What is describe about St. Cloud, MN in the linked article is something Grant and I saw working (“effectively”) by around 2000. The mid-section of the nation is being ground to dust under the weight of the political and economic destruction of the forced settlement of non-Americans. This could have been written many years ago.

St. Cloud is way out in central MN – not near Mpls-St. Paul.

    https://refugeeresettlementwatch.wordpress.com/2017/09/24/st-cloud-mn-a-microcosm-of-the-battle-ahead-for-cities-targeted-by-federal-refugee-program/

Please be sure your children and grandchildren know these things FOR A FACT – not just talk. Our country is being hollowed out.

I trust that Trump is just getting warmed up. We won’t have this kind of opportunity again. If the left survives his leadership the uniparty and the left will double down to be sure of that…..

What about that leaked alleged Soros program to infect the lesser populated red states with enough illegals and ‘Syrian’ refugees to turn them blue for 2018, 2020 at the latest? It was predicated on Hillary winning last year but I’m betting it continues despite.
I posted about that USDA program to use tax dollars to buy farms for the disadvantaged yearning to be farmers. It got passed as it was limited to legal residents but with a rider buried in so e huge bill it could be changed. It could also be left as is and the appropriate Rat engineers could just legalize the illegals and grant citizenship to applicants without violating the law.
My point since Novemberish of 2001 is that fundamentalist terror groups could easily buy rural properties to conduct training on…as several already have…and the Rats appear to be greasing the skids for them.

It has always interested me, and did while we were in MN, that the non-Americans had yet to figure out what a soft underbelly rural America is – with the thousands of back country roads with easy links to interstates. Sheesh, they could set off time-linked ieds in mailboxes cross country. It drovew me crazy when we lived there that the multi-generational locals were completely clueless about their vulnerability. Could never convince that it was the world, as well as New York, chicago and Seattle driving back and forth on I-94.

There were gang signs in the farm country around us and I guess they just didn’t believe what that represented.

Exception: the guy who was police chief in Fargo when we moved there in ’93: he was just in the process of taking his entire force, 10-15 at a time, to East Los Angeles for street training with regard to gang strategies. That guy got it.

        The rest,m not so much.

True very true. Except some rural areas, have banded together, as mine have. We have a 20 mile radius set up, Hotty Grams restaurant is central. A lot of information is exchanged, during a visit to the restaurant, also emails……As any soldier who has conducted a patrol debriefing has experienced. And you are so right about rural America being the soft underbelly.
You better rollerblade down too the Sheriffs Office for your CCW……. May I suggest a 9mm for carry plus 2 magazines. For your home protection, sawed off shot gun, then AR-15 with a 60 round drum. Ad Rem is very proficient with these types of weapons, also She lives closer than I do……

Two of us who were called back to work with the Feds brought this up in late 2001. We wanted to start leafing thru real estate sales to see if any obviously Mideast sounding names bought rural properties that might be used for training grounds. It was no great leap as the US designated terrorist group Jamaat-ul-Fuqra has established several Moslem-only communities across the US. We were told to lay off, this wasn’t our area.
Within a short time a guy in the Northwest was caught doing just that.

Out here we have a lotta rednecks snd even the older ones don’t take kindly to Moslem terr types, especially since so many of them spent multiple tours with the Guard ‘over there’. Not going to be a flurry of Mosque building ‘roun here any time soon.

    NASCAR owners warn teams:

Anthem protests could get you fired

Unlike their NFL and NBA executive counterparts, NASCAR Monster Energy Cup Series team owners did not support those within their organization to protest during the national anthem before Sunday’s race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

Richard Childress team owner of drivers Ryan Newman, Austin Dillon and Paul Menard and longtime car owner of Dale Earnhardt, said any protest of the anthem will “get you a ride on a Greyhound bus.”

“Anybody that works for me should respect the country we live in. So many people gave their lives for it. This is America,” Childress, a NASCAR Hall of Famer said, via the Associated Press.

President Donald Trump’s controversial remarks Friday, calling national anthem protesters in the NFL “sons of b—” and saying they should be “fired,” have sparked anger among NBA and NFL players this weekend. Trump said Sunday that standing with locked arms during the anthem is fine but kneeling is not acceptable.

Hall of Fame driver Richard Petty and current team owner of the No. 43 Cup Series team of Aric Almirola agrees with Trump.

“Anybody that don’t stand up for the anthem oughta be out of the country. Period. What got ’em where they’re at? The United States,” Petty said, adding that any protester within his organization would be fired.
